A thread for all things running in 2018.

This is the 11th thread since it started with a few of us who wanted to chat about our running, running clothes, support each other and get some training tips.

We talk about our runs and support and encourage where needed.

Please feel free to come and join us and add your miles to our running total for the month for the whole thread in bold at the bottom of each post.
Currently on 29.2 for January.

Just 6 miles to add

Tweaked my calf so not sure about Reading in two weeks

familygermsareok · 05/03/2018 16:16

Sorry to hear your hm cancelled whyare. All the local races round here have been cancelled too, including a 10 mile one I was signed up for yesterday. Frustrating when you've done the training, but it's definitely better to be safe.

Hope your calf better in time for Reading Penguin

On the plus point I did my longest run for ages, in the snow as well so a brilliant workout, but I was very tired by the end and really glad to get home. Snow is very pretty but hard work to run in! Fantastic at cleaning shoes though Grin
15.2 miles on Sat

Fingers crossed your calf settles Climbing.
I ran on paths! Not on snow! So happy. There is still a ton of snow about but the main paths in town are now clear so I got a good steady run in, although it was a very wet one!

Hope your calf gets better soon ClimbingPenguin

And, wow, 15 miles in the snow is very impressive familygerms

Glad you got a break from snow emummy hopefully it starts to brighten up for you soon!

3.1 miles from me today, and feel like I'm making progress in terms of being able to run a bit faster now. Came away feeling like I could run further, but my training plan has me in the gym every day this week, so I didn't want to push it!

What does everyone think a respectable time for a first half marathon is?

emummy · 07/03/2018 07:44

I think your time for a race depends on so many things, so I don't know if I could answer that question LadyLance! My first hm at Edinburgh - chosen for its flatness!- I did in 2:19 and was really pleased. My best was last year and is 2:10. There's a trail one which took 2:38, but only the first 17 finishers made in it under 2hrs, so it was an ok time for that race. Do you know what you're aiming for?

LadyLance · 07/03/2018 10:16

I've got no idea what sort of time to aim for emummy . Even if I'm last, I'll be proud to have finished it. It's not a completely flat course, and there is a section that goes through parkland. I think anything less than 2.30 would be good!

Hoping to fit in a run later today, will probably be on the roads as I won't have time to get to the gym!

emummy · 07/03/2018 10:51

When it's your first race at any distance finishing it is definitely the main goal! Sub 2:30 would be excellent too

familygermsareok · 07/03/2018 18:49

LadyLance I think respect is due for finishing a race regardless of time. There will be such a huge spread of abilities among all the runners so the main thing is to enjoy it and not worry about your time. And you will have that time to aim at on the next one as well, so you don't want to be too fast!! Grin
If I can give any advice it would be not to start too fast. Everyone always seems to dash off furiously but one thing I have learned is that 13.1 miles is a looong way and it really does help to start off slow, don't worry about keeping up with anyone else just do your thing and you will have the energy reserves you need at the end. You will probably pass a lot of the sprinters later on when they have emptied their tanks and are struggling.
I'm still not great at pacing myself even after about 18 hm's but it really does make a difference.
Enjoy it and good luck! Smile

Aargh! Rubbish run! Town completely clear of snow so ventured to the forest for an 8 mile run. To find 5in deep soft snow. Cut the run short, took me over an hour to do 5 miles. Very cross. Dog had a lovely time!

Hi All. Not been on here for ages so missed nearly all my February mileage. I was having terrible ITB issues and running had become a real chore and something I was getting very stressed about as I was meant to be running a HM last weekend. I got orthotics, two different types of physio had my knees and itb taped ( ie spent a fortune) and then ... race cancelled due to weather ( same race as whyare) I was gutted as I’d put so much physical and mental effort into preparing for it but also ever so slightly relieved. Not sure I’ll continue with long runs or just do 10k’s now. Anyway mostly treadmill so far this month ( except a lovely snowy run last week )

Sorry

LadyLance · 08/03/2018 13:22

Well done to all coping with snow- it's definitely long gone here.

Thanks emummy and familygerms for your encouragement. Definitely getting round is the first goal!

Just did sprints today plus some weight training so just 1.5 miles to add.

BusterTheBulldog · 08/03/2018 14:39

Had pretty much all of last week off due to snow! Feel for you emummy had a similar situation like you one of the days-so annoying!

17 miles done this week. I think the enforced rest may have done my kneee good anyway Wink

sayhellotothelittlefella · 08/03/2018 18:08

Hang on a second. We didn’t re-start mileage on 1st March. I make it
90.5 as a monthly total. Is that ok?

sayhellotothelittlefella · 08/03/2018 18:09

Don’t know why it posted twice

BusterTheBulldog · 09/03/2018 00:33

Good shout sayhello it seemed like a loooong feb in all ways!

LadyLance · 09/03/2018 12:14

3.4 miles today, the distance is slowly creeping up :)

I'm supposed to fit in a 50 minute run at the weekend, but with mother's day and a few other things, I'm not sure when it will happen- perhaps if I get up early on Sunday!

Thread total is 93.9

emummy · 09/03/2018 21:43

Well spotted sayhello! Glad to see the back of February!
Evening run today, couldn't manage this morning. Phone ran out of charge halfway, oops!

emummy · 11/03/2018 10:04

Lovely sunny morning for a run through country lanes. Got the fuelling a bit better, felt good.

117.9

LadyLance · 12/03/2018 14:12

On Saturday morning, I cleverly fell off a horse and so felt too stiff to run until today. However, two days off must have been good for me because I ran 4 miles today!

I hope everyone is enjoying their running- glad you have some sun emummy.

121.9

BusterTheBulldog · 12/03/2018 14:26

A good 4 from me also today, faster than recent times on that route, which is always nice Smile.

Sorry to hear about your horse fall Ladylance, I have horses too and I swear the older I get the longer the drop seems to be!

geekone · 12/03/2018 17:03

Hi can I join? I didn't know this existed. For background I have been running for a year and a half I will be 42 this year. Have a half kilomathon in April. I ran 25 miles in Jan and due to injury, holidays, work and snow only 11.8 in Feb.

Prefer running in woods etc.

Currently 11.2 in March but over only 2 runs.

geekone · 12/03/2018 17:06

Sorry now I get it

133.1

LadyLance · 12/03/2018 17:45

Buster I'm only in my late 20s, but I've recently noticed that I just don't bounce the way I used to even five years ago. Not seriously hurt, fortunately, but I just felt sooo stiff yesterday!

Welcome geekone Is a half kilomathon 13.1K?

emummy · 12/03/2018 19:34

Oh dear LadyLance, glad no serious injury was done! Late 20s eh, just a child really..!
Welcome geekone. Good luck with the training.
