A thread for all things running in 2018.

This is the 11th thread since it started with a few of us who wanted to chat about our running, running clothes, support each other and get some training tips.

We talk about our runs and support and encourage where needed.

Please feel free to come and join us and add your miles to our running total for the month for the whole thread in bold at the bottom of each post.
Currently on 29.2 for January.

2 weeks to go until Bath Half and just done a good 15k without any waking so feeling pretty good. How's your training going SayHi?
Well done everybody with all of these miles!!!

familygermsareok · 18/02/2018 16:11

Well done Whyare, sounds like training is going well.

goddess I'm sure your blood donation will have made a difference! Our club has a transition group which runs for 8 weeks at a time then members usually move up to the normal club runs but some have carried on with the transition group for another set if they felt that was better for them.

9.4 from me from a trail race this morning. Managed to cope with all the seriously muddy bits fine ( one poor soul lost their shoe in the mud) and then did a ridiculous face plant for no obvious reason on an nice flat smooth bit Blush
Mostly hurt pride at time but now I'm home my knee is quite bruised so I'm hoping I'll be ok for club trail run tomorrow night, I love those.

If I add on 9.3 for your 15k would that be about right Whyare ?

Hi all, can I join you?
I've got a half in 4 weeks and my training is not going well! I just don't seem to have any motivation to get the long runs in. Got some lovely new Brooks this week so hopefully that will help! 4.5 miles done today to break them in.

BusterTheBulldog · 18/02/2018 19:34

I always find new gear motivates me pyxie! Can you do any sessions with a run club? once I’ve said yes to a long run with them I then feel I HAVE to go, I also enjoy it more.

No running from me this weekend in an effort to rest and recover, I actually got to sleep last night without as much pain so fingers crossed-physio this week too.

emummy · 20/02/2018 11:20

Hope the new trainers are helping Pyxie.
Hope the recovery is going well Buster.
Beautiful sunny run in the forest today and finally remembered to put on the metronome! Stuck to it quite well, except for crossing the big icy patches - can't believe it's not all gone yet. Good run, until the dog rolled in poo. Joy!

BusterTheBulldog · 21/02/2018 09:29

Thanks emummy, club run last night, a steady 6.5 for knee hurt at first but seemed ok when warmed up, pain last night but no worse today. Crossing fingers and keeping it steady until get in for physio.

I would love a dog to go running with! Though poo rolling is less than ideal Wink

Beautiful sunny & frosty morning, lovely forest run

I've missed a bit of running due to having a horrid cold and lots of commitments involving travel :( Yesterday I went back to the gym for the first time in about a week and did some lower intensity cardio to ease myself back in, and got back to running today!

Unfortunately, I caught the emergency stop part way through, so not sure exactly how far I ran! I did manage to run for 45 minutes, with just a short break to let the treadmill reset itself.

And I've signed up for my half, so tomorrow's aim is to run 4 miles on roads/trails- I've been spoiling myself with the nice smooth treadmill!

Well done to everyone with their running!

MyBlackCat · 23/02/2018 20:14

I had hoped to make a return to the thread this month however my knee is no better, after six weeks of rehab work I’m still experiencing immediate pain when I run so getting referred to a specialist and potentially a mri scan 🙁 hope to be back with you all soon x

emummy · 24/02/2018 08:40

Hope you enjoy your run today LadyLance.
Oh MyBlackCat what a nightmare! I hope the specialist can sort it out soon, it must be very frustrating. Fingers crossed for you.
Good run this morning without dog for achange. And last night I signed up to help start a new parkrun in our area so scouting for routes now. Very excited!

LadyLance · 25/02/2018 11:25

MyBlackCat Oh no, I hope someone is able to help with your knee.

Did my 4 miles, first mile on the roads was fine although there was a strong headwind. Then I went on some woody trails and really struggled with the tree roots etc, ran through some fields which was ok except everything here is either up hill, down hill or across a hill (so your feet are on a slant) but I coped and only walked a few sections where I was worried about tripping and about 50m of a very steep hill on the way back so I'm calling it a win!

emummy · 25/02/2018 13:22

Sounds good LadyLance, well done!
10 miles in the forest, later start as it's dd1's birthday. Dog was super annoying today so kept having to stop for her. Decided next week I'm going on my own!

familygermsareok · 25/02/2018 20:25

Well done LadyLance, that sounds like a good run.
Sorry to hear about your knee MyBlackCat. Hope you find out what the problem is soon.
New parkrun sounds very exciting emummy. It is such a brilliant concept and amazing to see how much it's grown from the start.

I've got 28.2 miles to add since Thurs from 2 runs, club long reps and parkrun. Have finally joined Strava and spent most of the afternoon engrossed in segments, leaderboards and statistics. Aargh, I can see why DH spends half an hour staring at his phone every time he comes back from a cycle now!

ClimbingPenguin · 26/02/2018 06:32

50 miles to add this month. Might have hit too hard initially after the pneumonia and my body kicked back.

Did a 12 miler today and 10 last week. Thinking I’m finding the balance between commute running and training (ie accepting I lost too much fitness when I ill to do fast runs for a while).

425.8

Hope all are well

LadyLance · 26/02/2018 15:06

Well done everyone on their runs!

Back in the gym today and did 2.9 miles interval training. I definitely use different muscles running on trails compared to running on a treadmill, so I'm hoping to build up more outdoor runs as the weather gets nicer (I'm in the south-west, so no snow here, but lots of rain recently!)

familygermsareok I got Strava at the start of the year, and it's great to be able to scroll back and see how I'm progressing! I love that it gives me little medals every time I run a PB!

BusterTheBulldog · 27/02/2018 09:34

18.5 from me since last check in. Had some physio on fri, diagnosed with strained patella and quadrecep ligament. Basically me knee has been weak for ages, twisting my ankle recently has caused everything to have to work harder and eventually it’s given up!

Physio thinks should recover though and can still run as long as it doesn’t hurt when running which bizarrely it doesn’t. No jumpy gym classes for a bit though.

Snow here, so may be inside tonight 😒

emummy · 27/02/2018 11:38

Beautiful snowy run this morning, checking out possible parkrun routes. Week 1 of marathon training begins!
Hope you get everything sorted out Buster, nice that you don't need to stop running!

452.2

LadyLance · 27/02/2018 15:54

Hope nobody is getting too cold, I think you're very brave running in the snow emummy

No snow here and 3.2 miles on the treadmill today.

455.5

emummy · 01/03/2018 20:08

Wonderful snowy run tonight, really enjoyed it! Some on paths, some through woods with head torch on. Felt great!

Whyareusernamessotricky · 02/03/2018 08:22

I am really in awe of your snow running too emummy! Also copying your idea of yax trax to help. We are being alerted today at 3pm if Bath Half will go ahead as there is a strong chance of cancelling. I feel happy either way but seems a shame as trained pretty well for this and will be a shame to defer! Don't want to run on ice though and have that to contend with. Exciting times! No Miles to add as have not been able to face the cold for past week!

LadyLance · 02/03/2018 14:15

3.2 miles on the treadmill today, definitely getting faster at running this sort of distance.

Good luck if your half marathon goes ahead Why.

That sounds really cool emummy. I'm a very soft southerner, so not sure I can face running in snow.

466.0

Whyareusernamessotricky · 02/03/2018 15:27

Thank you:) race cancelled which is for the best. Emergency services needed elsewhere and seems to be an unnecessary risk. They are also refunding, which is very good of them! I'm relieved about not having to run on ice and cold conditions.

LadyLance · 02/03/2018 18:14

That sounds like the safest outcome Why. Are you going to find another half to do elsewhere instead?

emummy · 03/03/2018 11:13

Sorry the half is cancelled Why. I'm sure it is the best decision but a bit frustrating after all the training!
Another inch of snow here overnight. It is very pretty but running in it is such hard work! Wonder if this means I'll be super fast when it thaws? Probably not!
