A thread for all things running in 2018.

This is the 11th thread since it started with a few of us who wanted to chat about our running, running clothes, support each other and get some training tips.

We talk about our runs and support and encourage where needed.

Please feel free to come and join us and add your miles to our running total for the month for the whole thread in bold at the bottom of each post.
Currently on 29.2 for January.

Ah thanks, emummy! Smile

emummy · 10/02/2018 09:42

First hill rep session for a while, went ok, managed 5 so that's a start. And last night we booked the accommodation for Orkney so very excited!

familygermsareok · 10/02/2018 22:57

Good luck buster and to anyone else racing this weekend.
Are you doing an event in Orkney emummy ?

I have 12.6 to add from a run Thurs am, pyramid training with club Thurs pm and parkrun today.
Bit of a shock going for the run , there is a tall new fence blocking off one of my main access routes which must have been put up on Tue or Wed. I have been going this way for years! As do many walkers, runners and cyclists.
Am pretty sure it is a right of way as it fulfills all criteria so I have contacted our council. Hmm

I’m on wk 3 of c25k, it’s going ok, but my legs are always freezing. I’m wearing the usual Lycra type leggings, tshirt, running jacket and gloves and the gloves and jacket are off after a mile when I’m warm.

Any recommendations for warmer legs?

emummy · 11/02/2018 10:45

Confidence-boosting run this morning! Wanted 10 miles but the route was very hilly and I have been feeling a bit tired. But me & dog gave it a go and did it! Was a beautiful sunny morning, some icy patches and it was actually ok. 10 miles, 1400 ft and no falling!
Pixie you could wear shorts over your tights or get a pair of winter tights. Mine are from Ronhill and they really make a difference. Think decathlon do some too.
family I have signed up for the St Magnus marathon in Orkney. It's not till July but accommodation was getting rarer! Glad to be all booked up, better make sure I do the training! Starting at the end of this month.

I’ve been to Decathalon and picked up “run warm” leggings. Prob not out again till Tue, hopefully they will be better. They do seem thicker :)

BusterTheBulldog · 11/02/2018 15:49

30k done. It was bloody brutal. Headwind, hail and hills! Considering I’d done 15.5miles of the route 2 weeks ago with ease, I really struggled today. Think I might be coming down with something as thought was going to vom at 7miles in, genuinely thought was gonna have to bail out. Then pulled my calf a mile later, and my thighs were aching throughout. It’s done now though!!!

pixie I have some thermal 2xu compression tights which are good, can be pricey though. Have you tried doubling up? Hopefully we’ll be on the way out of cold weather soon Smile

Glad your 10 went well emummy!

Well done Buster! Sounds like a tough one. Cake time?!

BusterTheBulldog · 11/02/2018 16:12

Dominos time!!!

mayathebee · 11/02/2018 22:40

Hi all. I haven't been around for a while - work has been crazy and I have managed to fall off the running wagon again. I'm determined to do better next term (although we have a mock ofsted review so we'll see how it goes). I managed to get out for a local 5k event today and I feel so much better for it so I'm hoping I can stick with it. I got a GNR ballot place which is exciting but I'd like to be fitter and lighter by then so I'm going to have to try my best to keep it up!

emummy · 13/02/2018 07:46

Welcome back maya! Congrats on the GNR place.
Up early to run before sh went to work. Windy, heavy wet snow, got as soaked as it is possible to get! Must remember I have waterproof socks! And got hit in the face by a tree, so will have lovely scratched chin for taking kids to cinema later. Sigh.

familygermsareok · 13/02/2018 20:21

St Magnus sounds fantastic, emummy, and it must be safer than some of your usual runs with the weather, ice and tree hazards!! Grin
Good luck with your training.

Well done buster, hope you enjoyed a well-deserved pizza!

Welcome back maya, once it gets a regular habit it's much easier to get out, but it's hard when work keeps getting in the way.

5 miles from trail run with club last night. Bit of ice skating involved in places which was interesting! The usual route takes us along a path beside a rather steep cliff, but in the interests of health and safety we missed that bit out with the dark and ice, phew.

Out last night with the jogging club, suppost to be c25k wk5 but seems to have escalated quickly, last week was 5k this week 6.9k! Still on a walk/run but splits are faster so must be walking less/running more. Some hill work last night for the first time, sore legs today.

It was 1'C, dry, no wind to speak of, and the warmer leggings worked, legs were warm on the move :)

emummy · 15/02/2018 15:56

Great work Skippii, glad your legs were warm!
Afternoon run today, took dog to forest and found that the snow there hadn't been washed away yet! So fun snowy run and just made it back in time to collect ds from school.

247.45 including Skippii's.

emummy · 16/02/2018 11:02

Short recovery run after school running club this morning. Beautiful sunny day.

Skippii · 16/02/2018 13:04

How do race t-shirt size? I'm looking at some 5-10k events which promise a "technical t-shirt" but I'm not sure on the sizing. Currently running in my Sainsbury's gym t-shirt :)

Managed 4.3k yesterday, but my right calf is very unhappy after Tuesdays increase in distance + hillwork

BusterTheBulldog · 16/02/2018 14:34

I have some how injured my ankle / knee / bum. I think it’s all probably linked to one thing, need to get to physio sharpish.

Pain goes when run, but it’s pretty bad after and also when lay down.

I’ve managed 13 very slow miles so far this week.

I always find it’s a bit of a lottery skippi you can generally swap on the day though. I’m 5’7 and size 10 and generally go for a medium as I’d rather have a bit too big than too small.

262.7

emummy · 16/02/2018 17:23

Unless they specify men's and women's t shirts, then race t shirts tend to be more geared to men. My medium from the Inverness half last year fits me with plenty to spare and I'm 6ft1 and size 12-14! But too big is definitely better than too small, many of my race t shirts do sterling service as summer pyjama tops!

familygermsareok · 16/02/2018 21:00

Hope your injury settles soon Buster

skippi I agree race shirts are usually generously sized. I like them quite close fitting, I don't like flappy tops, so I always go for small or XS if available. I am 5'2 and size 8 with no bust to speak of, and S are usually still flappy and shapeless on me so I rarely use them afterwards which is a real shame.

I've got 12.5 to add from yesterday, 9 from a morning run and 3.5 from short reps with club in evening.

Agoddessonamountaintop · 17/02/2018 09:27

Hi all - mind if I join in? Been running since last Sept, with a beginners’ group which was challenging but got me to 5k. Since Jan I’ve been with the intermediates who are a whole different kettle of fish - load of gazelles, and the training’s really ramped up.
Since last week’s session (which nearly killed me) I’ve been out twice but not even managed 1k before giving up and going home feeling rubbish. I deliberately took a few days off after the hard session but I feel like I’m back to beginner level again! Very disheartening.
I know the answer is to just go out and do what I can but nice to ba able to vent - thanks!

emummy · 17/02/2018 17:03

Vent away Agoddess! Sounds like the next group is quite a change from the first one. Are you the only new person? Can you chat to the group leader? I don't know a lot about groups but I would have thought they should be trying to cater for all their members. Your training should be a gradual progression, sudden increases are not good! I hope you get something sorted, and welcome to the thread!

Agoddessonamountaintop · 18/02/2018 00:11

Thanks emummy! There is one other member who’s moved ‘up’ with me and she’s lovely but younger and fitter than me so we have quick chats at the warm up and cool down! The leader is lovely also and she stresses the group stay pretty much together (she shouts’loop back!’ a lot), but if you’re always the one everyone’s looping back for you start to feel a bit of a tit, no natter how lovely and encouraging the coaches are. There’s only two sessions left so I might give them a miss and just plod on by myself.
On that note: I’ve remembered that I gave blood the morning of my last big run, which theoretically shouldn’t make a big difference but it does seem a likely explanation for me going back several months progress-wise. Duh!

emummy · 18/02/2018 09:26

Yes I think blood donation would have an effect! Maybe some runs on your own would be a good idea.
Lovely early run today, saw the sunrise, a heron, geese, a woodpecker, just lovely.

286.2

Agoddessonamountaintop · 18/02/2018 10:25

Yes it did seem obvious once the penny dropped! Waht’s the numbers in the posts? Is it everyone’s individual totals?

emummy · 18/02/2018 11:03

The numbers are the group total for the month. So if you go out for a run you add your miles on.
