A thread for all things running in 2018.

This is the 11th thread since it started with a few of us who wanted to chat about our running, running clothes, support each other and get some training tips.

We talk about our runs and support and encourage where needed.

Please feel free to come and join us and add your miles to our running total for the month for the whole thread in bold at the bottom of each post.
Currently on 29.2 for January.

PinkPonies the poor leg 2- ers had to run up and into the strong tailwind we had, I didn't envy them at all! Definitely your turn next year!

lamblossom its a lovely feeling when a run goes like that Smile

Whyare I much prefer morning runs too. Have much more energy and no problem with motivation. I'm rubbish at getting myself out the door in evening, I just can't be bothered if I'm running myself, but since I joined a running club I've found it easier because I have to get there for a set time. I never feel as energetic but once I get going there's no real difference.

emummy how does the metronome work? Do you carry it with you as you run outside? And how do you adjust for hills, or is that the idea, are you supposed to keep same cadence regardless?

6m trail run with club last night along a path beside the beach. Beautiful and very peaceful.

emummy · 30/01/2018 16:14

family the physio said to have it on for 10 sec at the start of each mile, which is a bit awkward! And most of my runs are very hilly so it's going to be interesting. I found a phone app, so will just have to hold it and switch it on & off. We'll see...

ClimbingPenguin · 30/01/2018 21:00

We did some metronome exercises at club tonight funnily enough.

sayhellotothelittlefella · 30/01/2018 21:56

So I’ve bought some orthotics and ordered a new pair of trainers ( I have big feet so there weren’t any in stock) to try and help sort out my knee pain which is almost certainly ITB issues because of my totally flat feet. I’ve used them in my old trainers a couple of times on shorter runs. I did a really really slow 4 mile recovery run on Sunday a rest day Monday ( not including boot campGrin) and then a 3 mile hill climb on the treadmill today.
I’m another one that prefers to run in the morning tricky and climbingpenguin even getting out of the house in the evening is harder.

10.5 to add from me.

I dont think I have a preference on morning or evening, I’ve always done things after work so used to working out then. I do like all the lights / flashy stuff I get to wear in winter too Grin.

1169.1

BusterTheBulldog · 31/01/2018 09:02

Oops

1164.1 Blush

Pinkponiesrock · 31/01/2018 13:50

Club last night, lots and lots of reps of sprints up and over a hill, focusing on different strides patterns, driving arms etc. I was shattered by the end Blush

Had planned to run today but ended up in a trial exercise class at our trampoline park, it was exhausting, feel like I’ve done a marathon!

However just 5 miles to add from yesterday, so 1169.1

bibblebobblebubble · 31/01/2018 14:05

Just did my longest run in ages, made it over 10k which was the aim as I've signed up to a local 10k in May. And just entered the ballot for the Royal Parks Half later in the year - anyone else?

emummy I think food might be part of it. I just had eggs, avocado and a slice of toast, plus a banana when I got home, hoping that ought to be enough fuel to keep me going.

sayhello knees are a bugger aren't they? Mine track crookedly and I'm trying to run straighter but not easy. Thinking of trying a knee support of some kind. I am seeing a physio so at least I know there's nothing too seriously wrong.

First run of the week today, 2.5 miles on the treadmill. I've got a busy week so fitting in the running is going to be a struggle. Hoping to manage another one tomorrow morning- going to aim for 3 miles tomorrow.

Well done to everyone!

Lifeisabeach · 31/01/2018 21:49

I did 5k of interval sprints yesterday. Just checked on strava and I’ve done 101km in January Smile

familygermsareok · 01/02/2018 14:44

Great January running everyone Smile
I have 8.2 for our first February miles. Very windy, I was flying round in one direction and almost at a standstill in the other!
Have hill reps with the club later on this evening too. Had a rather large curry with friends last night so hoping today's double run will balance that out!! Grin
8.2

emummy · 02/02/2018 13:24

February miles a big fat zero so far as I have caught the sickness bug - thanks Dh! Slightly better today, fingers crossed for a sow trot on Sunday. Keep up the good work all! Extra kudos to the treadmill runners, really don't like treadmills!

emummy · 02/02/2018 13:25

Oops, a slow trot that should say! Not planning to involve pigs in any way.

familygermsareok · 02/02/2018 13:42

Hope you're feeling better soon emummy
I wondered what a sow trot involved Grin. Am already very familiar with slow trots though.
4.7 from club hill reps last night. Hard work, but felt very good after.
12.9

bibblebobblebubble · 02/02/2018 14:14

Didn't go far today - was doing interval training using the Nike+ Run Club guided runs, anyone else tried those?

Feel like I really ought to do hill reps sometime like you familygerms - I am rubbish at hills!

14.9

Pinkponiesrock · 02/02/2018 23:29

I did mile reps with my running gals last night then short tempo with club this morning then took the kids from school XC club out, so 12 miles from all of those.

At Parkrun tomorrow morning, although my legs are feeling pretty dead at the moment.

Ended up in a trial exercise class at our trampoline park on Wednesday and that has a lot to answer for, every muscle in my body has hurt since Confused
You know when you think you’re quite fit then you try something different and it’s like, erm not feeling so fit now!!

26.9

LadyLance · 03/02/2018 09:15

Had limited time for a gym session this morning but ran 1.2 miles at a faster than usual pace, and managed a swim last night. The proper training starts on Monday (in theory!)

emummy I think I must be a freak because I find treadmill running much easier. Tbf I live in a very hilly town, I don't have any runs that don't involve a steep incline! Also I find it much easier to run in the dry and the warm. It is partly psychological though- I like watching the numbers tick up on the treadmill!

Shadow01 · 03/02/2018 09:15

Afteramy months of not running I restarted C25K yesterday on week 2.
Got to stick with it this time.

LadyLance · 03/02/2018 09:16

Forgot to add to the thread total-

28.1

emummy · 03/02/2018 09:35

Good luck shadow! You can do it

lasttimeround · 03/02/2018 10:25

ladylance I also find treadmill running easier. Just smoother which makes it easier. But I do find running outdoors is better for my mental health. Fresh air, getting out of my head.

Still plugging away with 3 runs a week. Knees still hurts a bit but aren't getting worse.

34.1

Lifeisabeach · 03/02/2018 14:21

Parkrun this morning in the rain and mud!

37.2

RunningAddict · 03/02/2018 17:12

Carrying on with the training, signed up for a half marathon in March which I’m really looking forward to Smile

lasttime hope your knees hold up

shadow good luck! I started with C25K, best thing I ever stuck with

52.2

Popcorninapot · 03/02/2018 21:51

Hi hoping I can join in? I started running again in jan after a 2 year break. Well really a 5 year (and 3 kids) break. Have done a couple of 10ks pre kids but have really got the bug since january since I stopped breastfeeding my youngest. Trying to get out at least 3 times a week. Have joined a challenge to run 1000k this year so really need to clock some miles! Did a 3.5 mile run on Thursday and 3 miles tonight so can add 6.5m to the total.

So 58.7

familygermsareok · 03/02/2018 21:53

bibblebobblebubble I am pretty rubbish at hills too. I don't actually mind them, a lot of my routes are quite hilly, but by myself I just slow right down and do them at a comfortable snails pace. I'm hoping pushing myself with the clubs reps will get me faster.

Good luck shadow and good luck with your hm training RunningAddict

7.3 from parkrun plus there and back.
