Hi,

As the ballot results come out, thought I'd start a thread to discuss training plans and share the pain of getting up at stupid o'clock on a winter morning to get long runs done.

I was supposed to run in 2017 but my knee went kaput. Physio reckons it was just runners knee and said I needed to strengthen quads, glutes and core muscles (that are shot to pieces following two large babies) So I deferred my place until 2018.

I'm doing 30 Day Ab Challenge each night (made more challenging by husband "hilariously" making childish trump noises every time I sit up Hmm ) and mixing running up with Spinning and strength training at the gym .

Put loads of weight on while knee was knackered. Which is going to be the opposite of helpful for it so am on a diet to try and lose at least 2 stones (almost half way there now though)

Anyone found a decent 6 month training plan?

Xx

I've not used a camel back. DH came with me on my first 10k, and he carried it for me. I'm due to do a 6.5 miles on sunday (furthest run!) and will take it with me for a solo outing.
4.5 done today, and a on of 59.15!

LoudestRoar · 19/11/2017 14:15

Just done 7 miles, for the first time ever. Feel good, although afterwards I was walking, and felt something pop in my foot. Was painful at the time, but seems ok now, just a bit swollen

PickleSarnie · 19/11/2017 16:26

Bloody well done Loudest How's your foot now? Have you put some ice on it? I'm loving my ice packs. 7 quid from Amazon. Comes with a sleeve and a stretchy Velcro strap to tie on.

Just been for 45 minute run at the gym. Was lovely afternoon so should have gone out but wanted to watch Crazy Ex Girlfriend so stuck to the treadmill.

How's everyone else's weekends been?

Thanks pickle It's fine now, no swelling, and no twinges. It is in a place I've had pain before, so hopefully it will be ok.
Can I ask advice about pace? I'm currently completing runs faster than the app is suggesting. Should I slow down?

ThursdayLastWeek · 23/11/2017 09:34

I hope your foot is feeling better now Loudest. I think it’s important to mix up your pace during different runs.

If The pace you’re running at now feels compfortabke then that’s good, but I would add some fartlek or sprints to your plan to mix it up.
I do try to run a slow pace on my long runs, as they’re about getting your body used to running for a long time and I don’t want to put any extra strain on it!

Hill sprints. I love/hate them. Painful, but quick and so effective. Can squeeze them into an otherwise exercise free day.

Today is my LSR day, after postponing it from yesterday after the high winds. Looks lovely out there now hurrah. Aiming for 12 miles.

LoudestRoar · 23/11/2017 11:51

Good luck for 12 miles thursday

Foot seems fine. Didn't stop me having an awful run with the buggy on Tuesday, and I ended up walking the 4.5 miles. At least I got the miles in though.
Due 4.5 tomorrow, but I'm doing it on the treadmill instead of taking my little one in the buggy again. I think I was still tired from my longest run on Sunday.
How are you doing pickle?

ThursdayLastWeek · 23/11/2017 15:24

11 in the end, windy, forgot my water. Not the funnest of times.

Big blisters forming between my big & second toe on one foot - any tips on how to prevent that?

LoudestRoar · 23/11/2017 21:17

One of my friends completed a 72 mile race last weekend (crazy man!) and he wore injitsu socks. Apparently they amazing at stopping blisters.
11 miles is amazing! I'm not due that till Dec/Jan time, so still slowly building up.
After my horrific walk run on Tuesday, I'm not going to take ds out in the buggy tomorrow. I normally like to get it out the way with first thing, but I think psychologically I need a good run tomorrow, so I'll wait for dh to get home. Rest up Thursday you must be knackered!

PickleSarnie · 24/11/2017 17:22

72 miles?!? Ouch. I feel exhausted just thinking about that.

Did you have a better run yesterday loudest? Well done on 11 miles Thursday

I wasn't feeling too great this morning so went to the gym instead of outside so could finish sooner if I needed to. Did an hour on the treadmill then some leg and core exercises. Going to aim for a longish run on Sunday. Went spinning on Wednesday. Was v tough. There's a leader board behind the instructor and I've discovered a competitive streak I never knew I had! Went flat out just to try and get as far up the leader board as possible without being overtaken or throwing up!

Im due my next run tonight, so I'll let you know in the next couple of gours!

LoudestRoar · 24/11/2017 19:49

4.5 miles in 58.20 on the treadmill, a new PB!

farine · 26/11/2017 13:58

Is Sunday everyone's long run day? I did 7.5 miles today. Took me 1.5Hours so really slow. But I guess it's meant to be a long slow run!

First two miles hurt a lot and I got terrible calf pain (again) which made me stop and stretch but after that I kind of found my groove. Was pacing using heart rate and stuck mainly around 140.

Still not stretching enough but think I might have a little siesta to help aid recovery Wink

LoudestRoar · 26/11/2017 14:28

farine long run here too, 6.5 miles. I'm buzzing as I got a 5 and 10k PB. I'd love a siesta, but 16 month old ds will have other ideas. DH is cooking roast lamb, so that will make up for everything...

farine · 26/11/2017 19:52

Mmmm roast lamb, hope it was tasty. I popped the chicken in the over before I went out, perfect timing for this length of run but as I get into longer run I'll need to rethink plans! Get out earlier and get DH to do lunch.

He was very good and took little one out so I could have a siesta. Defo feeling it this evening though. Legs are tired.

Kiwikiss1 · 26/11/2017 20:40

Sunday is my long run day. 8 miles tonight. Signed up for my first half on 23rd December. I have chickened out of two previously but feel ready now. Not sure if I will make the 3 hour cut off TBH but really want to conquer a half before the end of the year x.

LoudestRoar · 26/11/2017 21:23

Roast lamb was delicious. I have my furthest run so far next weekend. It should be 8.5 miles, but my running loop is 4.5, so it will be 9 miles. I'm having to do it a day early as well, as dh is working Sunday. I'm already nervous....

LoudestRoar · 28/11/2017 07:44

I'm on the sicky sofa today. 4.5 miles on the plan, but very disappointed to be logging a rest day instead, even if it is the sensible thing to do. Hopefully I'll shake this virus, and can go out tomorrow ....

PickleSarnie · 28/11/2017 10:15

Get well soon Loudest - don't try to get back in it before your all better. They say if it's above the neck e.g. headache, congestion etc then it's fine to keep exercising but if it's below the neck e.g. wheeziness, tight chest, dodgy stomach then rest up. Obvs am not medically qualified (unless that first aid badge at guides 25 years ago counts! Grin )

Can I join please?
Not got as far as you lot with training ( not actually started yet 😳) but I do run 3-4 miles couple times a week just need to start upping th miles

LoudestRoar · 28/11/2017 13:25

Of course hatty welcome ! What marathon are you doing?

LoudestRoar · 29/11/2017 18:21

I'm having to completely re jig my planned runs this week. Skipped my 4.5 miles yesterday. I'm going to do a shorter run tomorrow, instead of friday, and doing my 9 miles in Saturday instead on Sunday. I'll get back to normal the week after..

hatty44 · 29/11/2017 22:38

I'm doing London too but planning to do a 12-14 week training programme as I get so bored if I start long runs too early.
I think this thread may help me get myself into a routine finally and get properly into training

MrsStrauli · 01/12/2017 11:38

Hi ladies,

Another friendly mumsnetter sent me in this direction because yesterday I got a place (highly unexpectedly!!) in the Berlin Marathon 2018.

I entered on a whim and, though I am fairly fit, have very little distance running experience (a few years ago I got up to 12 miles before getting injured training for same race).

Anyhow! Happy there are some other people training/putting yourselves through utter hell and hope you won't mind a Berlin Marathon interloper!

MrsStrauli · 01/12/2017 11:41

P.s. Do you use a garmin or similar...I'm just wondering if they're worth the £££!

LoudestRoar · 01/12/2017 13:11

Congratulations MrsStrauli When is Berlin? I use a Tom Tom, which I love. They are worth the money, help so much with my pacing.
