Oh’S Man In HK goes to an amazing club in HK, I can try and find out where that is to see if you can get there etc

rightsofwomen · 11/10/2017 21:49

Club as in night club or sports club?!

OP posts:
Hissy · 11/10/2017 21:50

Sports club of course!! Apparently it has an amazing pool...

rightsofwomen · 11/10/2017 22:02

Oh good. I don't see me out clubbing ever while I'm over there.

Could I quietly sneak in? Just started swimming again after years of just splashing about with the kids and am loving it. Only managing 1-2 times a week for less than an hour so only managed 1.25km max so far but am loving it so much. Looking for advice though, already my ears are complaining. Any earplug suggestions, not sure whether to try putty ones or are the plug types better? Wish our local centre did improvement lessons, am v envious of those of you learning to improve!

rightsofwomen · 12/10/2017 06:55

Welcome Justa.

I can't help with your ears I'm afraid.

Without wishing to sound like a patronising arse, it struck me how you said "only" to refer to both the number of times and the distance you swim.

Turn it around and say "I'm able to go once or twice a week and swim just over 1K, and I feel brilliant". Then come and tell us all about it here.

Welome too, Justa and so pleased you are loving your swimming! There is someone who swims with me who puts in very flexible looking earplugs, maybe the putty ones you mention. She tucks her ears + earplugs under her swimming cap too. I've heard of sprays you can get from Boots – and I've also seen one on the ProSwimwear website:

SwimmingInTheBlueLagoon · 12/10/2017 14:27

Can I jump in since I could never master diving dive in too

rights I love the positive attitude

justa I'm just starting back to actual swimming too (DD now in nursery 3 part days per week).

I decided to get my dad to teach me proper technique before I aim to get distance or speed up. (Dad was a champ back in the day but worked long hours when I was younger, so he's never taught me before but now he's retired). It turns out I have always done my arms wrong in breaststroke - it seems most people make the same mistake too. I can't believe the speed difference if makes. Ive also never been able to coordinate my breathing in front crawl, turns out my issue there was just me trying to take the breath slightly later than I should, so I can now stay straight and breath! Grin Luckily the pool I'm signed up to is really quiet in the daytime, so I dont need to worry about looking a fool or getting in people's way.

SingingAvocado · 12/10/2017 14:47

Welcome BlueLagoon. Do pass on your breaststroke tips! I'm very slow at breaststroke (and have a wonky kick) so just don't swim it –
which probably exacerbates the problem!

TheMShip · 12/10/2017 16:00

I managed a rather painful 800m today, but pleased I did it as it does cheer me up. Heartburn, of all things, is brutal when you do flip turns!

Welcome Justa and Bluelagoon!

TriGirl007 · 12/10/2017 20:18

justasec I’ve recently started using the putty type wax ear plugs. They mould into the outter part of the war they don’t feel like they will stay put but with a bit of moisture they do. I do try pull my hat over to help as well. Work well for me now I’ve got used to them. I’ve also tried the swim ear drops they were basically olive oil & tea tree mix as drops were ok but didn’t stop the water just reduces any infection risk. Well done on your swimming.

TriGirl007 · 12/10/2017 20:19

Ear not war?!

Justasec · 12/10/2017 21:12

Thank you for the welcome everyone and inspiring words. I shall try the putty ear plugs for my next swim, hopefully at the weekend. Will report back!

bruffin · 12/10/2017 23:05

I dont normally wear ear plugs, but need them for my finis duo mp3. First tried ones that look like screws, which i found painful, but have now bought the putty ones , and as Trigirl says, feel like they shouldnt stay in, but seem to.

Whattodowithaminute · 13/10/2017 06:07

bruffin how do you find the finis duo? Have a birthday coming up soon and it is on the possible present list!

bruffin · 13/10/2017 13:24

I really like it.
I had cheap ebay ones before, which actually were okay, but lasted about 6 months. Sometimes the water got under the earpiece which was irritating, which doesnt happen with the finis duo.
You still need something in your ear for the finis duo for the sound to travel proberly but this can be normal swimming earplugs. I did have to return the first one as it wasnt charging properly, but (touch wood) the new one seems ok. I bought it from Ocean Leisure near Embankment station, so i could try it first.

rightsofwomen · 16/10/2017 14:03

1K done at lunch time. New jobber started today, but line manager happy for me to manage my own time. Yay. It's hard to get out in the evening when DS2 is with me so I do my sport in the day and work after he's in bed.

Still no visa.....

Well done Rights. I've had a cold since Thurs/Fri so gave it a miss today. I think I'll make tomorrow morning though. Hope you enjoy your new job, and get that visa soon … In the light of Brexit (yes, shallow of me, I know!) I'm going down the route of reviving my dormant Portuguese citizenship and their consulate is pretty grim, with one abortive journey already.

TheMShip · 16/10/2017 15:20

Congrats on the job, rights!

No swim for me today, was up half the night with DC2 who is a grumpy sick toddler. DC1 is also off for half term, so I couldn't justify leaving early to myself. DH says they're doing pretty well. Hopefully a better night tonight and I can squeeze in a swim tomorrow.

SandLand · 16/10/2017 15:46

Congrats on the job.
Fingers crossed for the visa.

I'm planning to swim tomorrow morning. 1km, or 1.3 if i can get done gefore school starts reaching in there. Only slight hitch in that plan is the British Embassy are having a do tonight, and they have means to bring in certain bottle of stuff that no-one else can get, so I'm on the booze tonight. Which might make swimming at 7am unappealing!

I ran today. It's too hot to run. My face was like Angry

TriGirl007 · 16/10/2017 17:59

Swam 1k this morning but didn’t enjoy it as I was too fast for the medium lane and the slowest in the fast lane - I swam in fast lane but kept feeling panicky I wasn’t fast enough which then messed up my breathing. I normally go in evening as quieter but I’m helping out at a swim gala tonight instead. But I’m really worried my back has flared up and very painful Sad I’ve intermittent “periods” of bulging disc pains so really hoping as this is the fittest I’ve ever been I can manage it again & it will ease off last flare up took a year to get back to “normal” again.

Hope everyone is ok in the storm winds it’s been pretty gusty in the West with eiree red sun.

Hissy · 16/10/2017 18:05

AbacateCantador boa sorte with the consulate... I’ve heard it’s a nightmare for red tape, but if there’s an avenue it has to be worth looking at.

lljkk · 16/10/2017 19:35

Hi lassies.
I picked up a foot injury so can't run much, glad I have swimming to fall back on.
At my pool, I spoke to one of the super fast swimmers the other day... turns out she & the others in her gang of 5 buddies were training to swim the Channel... which they duly did in the summer. OMFG. I feel humbled to have shared a pool lane with them. So THAT'S why they were so much faster than me.

We also talked about how neither of us can keep count above 5 so thank goodness for Swimtag. I have a small thing in common with the Channel swimmer, ha!

I am having a big fat Fail with the Finis Duo, so far. The sound quality is terrible although I haven't invested in expensive ear plugs (would need ear plugs that make me deaf to everything else, to be sure). I can't get the speakers to sit well on my face bones. I can only hear the higher notes (I think it's higher, am tone deaf, so could be some other musical quality). sometimes only one speaker seems to work but I think that's a stereo-note-difference problem. Anyway, it sounds awful. Not sure whether to waste money on expensive ear plugs or just sell it on. 9yo DS loves the FinisDuo, though, seems to work perfect for him without any ear plugs.

lljkk · 16/10/2017 19:39

just thinking about it... I struggle to get the finis to sit anywhere on my face except over my ears. They never sit snugly on my face bones, they hang loose there. So if I got earplugs, that would destroy would little sound I can hear from the FinisDuo.

SingingAvocado · 16/10/2017 20:06

Muito obrigada Hissy!
I love that you socialise at the British Embassy Sandland … and that you swim with Channel swimmers lljkk!
