Hello. Can I join too please? Started in January, with 500m in about half an hour and felt knackered. Now up to 2km in an hour on my best days, and try to go at last twice a week, ideally three times. My breast stroke is wrong and rubbish and slows me down, but I can't front crawl every length and pool is usually too crowded for back stroke. Would really welcome advice on whether adult swimming lessons would be worthwhile - I have tried to self-correct my stroke but it's so ingrained now... Also, any tips on how not to eat everything in sight after a swim would be great because I have toned up quite a bit but put on 4lb since starting Angry

Whattodowithaminute · 01/10/2017 08:16

Well that felt good! Really pleased to have made it out and will work towards this being a regular event. 950m (I think-so rubbish at counting lanes...) this morning in half an hour

TheMShip · 02/10/2017 09:52

Good stuff everyone, you're all getting me psyched up for my next swimtag challenge. Statue of liberty swim, 4084m = 164 lengths. There are prizes for doing it in a single day, so I'm going to attempt it Saturday.

TriGirl007 · 02/10/2017 09:58

Welcome party are there swimfit sessions at your pool? They have an instructor on pool side who gives instruction if you want it at our pool. They stand at the end of the lane and give advice, drills to try. It's good if you can swim basics but need technique working on. Alt there's lots of vids on you-tube if you look at the part2 thread I picked up few tips from those. Then it's just lots of pratice, I think as adults we forget how long it takes to "learn" swimming. My kids both spent a good 2-3yrs on the basics Smile I've spent good year+ just trying to crack frontcrawl breathing and I'm still working on it but can now do 20-30L with out a break of FC and then swap to breaststroke. Gd luck.

Been out of the pool the last 2wks due to bugs so hoping I can get back in tonight if this flipping hormonal headache eventually lifts!

CMOTDibbler · 02/10/2017 10:12

I fell off the other thread! Just back from a trip to California for work where colleague and I snuck off to swim in the ocean. It was amazing! I loved diving through the breaking waves to get out, and then seeing manta rays beneath me.
I have to crack on for my last swimming challenge of the year - 5k in the lido Smile

TriGirl007 · 02/10/2017 21:00

Waves at CMOT not jealous at all on the California swimming oh no Grin hope the lido swim goes well.

I made it back into the pool tonight after 2wk break, only did 25mins but kept going & was tired after a long run (for me) earlier. Trying out the nasal spray after the swim to see if it reduces that "I've got a cold" feeling the next day.

partystress · 02/10/2017 21:07

Thanks Trigirl. I'll have a look and see about swimfit. Meanwhile what are these tags people are talking about? Is it like a swimming Fitbit?

fairyofallthings · 02/10/2017 21:12

I started swimming today, I did 10 lengths then a short (

rightsofwomen · 03/10/2017 09:27

Well done fairy.

It's very quick to see small improvements in swimming.

fairyofallthings · 03/10/2017 13:58

Thanks. I went earlier and managed 12 lengths before a break and then did 13, I'm aiming to do six more each time.

SingingAvocado · 03/10/2017 14:26

Welome minute, party and fairy.

Great progress Fairy – and you might be meaning Swimtag. Yes, it is a bit like a fitbit for the pool. At my pool you get it free with swim membership or can hire one for £1 a session. Not sure whether your pool does it. It is clever in that it works out your strokes, stroke rates, speeds etc. It doesn't keep a count of your lengths that you can see though, so I still need to count (it uploads all the info only once it is docked back in after your swim)! There are others out there (Garmin perhaps) that you can look at see how many lengths you are doing. Or you can be like a man I swim with who has one of those little knitting counters on his arm and moves it on for each length!

allegretto · 03/10/2017 14:32

Party - I had lessons last year and it was so worth it! I was in the beginner's course, despite knowing how to swim and lots of excellent swimmers were also having lessons. My pool only does lane swimming and is quite serious so I felt I had to up my game!

rightsofwomen · 07/10/2017 18:00

Where is everyone??!

I have only managed one swim this week.
I’m drowning in all other aspects of life.
It sucks when life gets in the way of precious exercise/me time, but I have been able to run which takes less time.

10k (running) race tomorrow.

bruffin · 07/10/2017 18:09

I have not been good lately, only going to my lessons and an aqua class after which i do 500m.
My first lesson back, due to an mistake i was the only one there, so my teacher got in the pool with me and looked under the water and gave me some more tips on what i was doing wrong.

lyjkk
Have you sorted your finis duo yet?
You need to convert the music to MP3, then its just a paste and copy job. I had to return my first one because it stopped working, but touch wood the replacement seems ok.

TheMShip · 07/10/2017 18:51

I'm here, just busy this week and only managed two swims: 1km yesterday and 4.2 km today. Today's was the swimtag Statue of Liberty challenge that my pool is doing for October. I decided to do it in one go, gets me bonus loyalty points I can use at the creche. Hard work but super satisfying! I completed it in 1h 21m, currently fastest time on the leader board so I'm well chuffed!

rights good luck in your 10k tomorrow!

fairyofallthings · 08/10/2017 06:09

Good luck rights
I was planning to go to lane swimming at eight but....I will go twice this week.

Whattodowithaminute · 08/10/2017 14:01

Managed a swim this morning, later, busier, 1km, so hungry now...!

bruffin · 08/10/2017 14:43

Dh had to go to work so i got up and went for a swim. I did breaststroke up and crawl back. I then did an egym session so pleased with myself

fairyofallthings · 08/10/2017 15:09

Well done bruffin and what

I went for a swim after all, I was reluctant as I had leg cramp but managed 16 lengths then a short break for a drink and another 16.

The pool was busier than I expected it would be and I struggled to find the right lane - I was first in and so bagged the lane next to the wall. A bit later two men turned up and one was faster than me but the other was slower but they wanted to swim next to each other so took lane 2 and 3 but one kept coming into 'my' lane; I couldn't go in lane 4 because I'm too slow for lanes 3 and 4. It's a minefield isn't it?!

bruffin · 08/10/2017 16:31

I actual like the way our pool does it. Sunday morning only one lane which is about 5 wide, so plenty of room for overtaking and fast ones go up and down the middle.

fairyofallthings · 08/10/2017 16:48

My pool has two lanes with ropes where Michael Phelps wannabees swim and the rest of the pool doesn't have lane ropes but does have the lane system. What do you do when you are considerably faster than one lane but considerably slower than the other?

The other day I was twice as fast as the lane to my right but twice as slow as the one to my left and faster than the person I was sharing the lane with. They thought I should move (and told me so) to the faster lane, I thought they should move to the slower lane but didn't tell them that.

TheMShip · 08/10/2017 16:56

Usually fast/middle/slow at my pool, with generally decent lane etiquette, though the fast/middle distinction is not much and it's considered ok to go in whichever has the fewest people if you belong in either of those two.

SingingAvocado · 09/10/2017 09:45

Lane etiquette is tricky Fairy. Today I ended up in the fast lane because there was someone in the medium lane going slowly. The pool was very quiet so the lanes worked out neatly for everyone. Swimtag didn't work at all today – nothing recorded at all, not even saying the wristband hasn't been docked. Frustrating as I do like seeing what Swimtag says!

rightsofwomen · 09/10/2017 14:24

1K done....actually I don't think it was, but hey ho, who's counting.

Needed that.

fairyofallthings · 09/10/2017 14:28

Our pool is always busy, usually there are about 30 people at the session I go to. The other day one person was walking down the first half of the length and then swimming which was really annoying a lot of people. I do wish that the life guards would say something at times.
