The newsest thread for all runners to chat and keep track of their miles. Everyone welcome for support, guidance and general running talk including very important kit choices Wink

Welcome 36plus! 10 sets of hills, I'm impressed!
The numbers in bold on the posts are our cumulative total for the month, so if you like you can add the miles you run.

Raining and muggy here. Did some interval training this morning. I am so slow! Cut compeed plasters to size they seem to be helping.

Looking forward to cooler weather in the autumn. 9c sounds lovely cinnemon

36 plus welcome. Very impressed with your hills.

Wanted to ask, what's the best way to tackle hill training. I need to do more and if I'm honest have been avoiding it a bit!

I've been walk running up a massive hill near me.
do you run up then down a small hill or just find a big hill? What's the best way to hill train?

MyBlackCat · 17/08/2017 18:16

Welcome 36plus

I didn't get out today - spent last night with my head down the toilet Sad not sure if I'll manage tomorrow or not.

36plusandtrying · 17/08/2017 22:27

Marvell there is a hill in my city that is used often by trainers to beast people up and down. I spotted my boot camp trainer at the bottom of it one day and asked him what he was doing and that's what I tried.
30 min session, 3 min a hill (up and down) and however you do that is up to you and your fitness. So I went as hard as I could to get up the bloody thing ! Then slow jog down to get a rest between sets. Running rest day today ... legs and feet are buggered.

emummy · 18/08/2017 07:46

Sorry you're ill MyBlackCat, hope you are better soon.
There are different types of hill sessions you can do Marvellous; you can find a shortish steep hill and run hard up for 60 -90 seconds, then jog down as recovery, start off at about 4 or 5 and gradually increase the reps. Or you can do continuous hills, where the hill is a bit less steep and you run up and down it at the same steady pace. Or just include hills in your normal run route. Hills are always helpful although they may not feel it at the time!

cinnamongreyhound · 18/08/2017 16:00

Get well soon MyBlackCat!

We used to do hill training with lamp posts when I went to club training. Run hard to first lamp post and recover down, then hard to second and recover down. I believe there were 5, so it was like a pyramid, 1,2,3,4,5,4,3,2,1 efforts with recovery down between each.

Usual Thursday run with a bit more added on 233.3. Supposed to be running today as part of the challenge I'm doing with my friend but I have 50misn before ds1's swimming lesson and won't be back until 6.30 so will need some serious discipline to go then alone!

I made it out, I shouldn't have but DS woke early from his nap and wasn't happy about it so took him out in the Buggy - got soaked too Sad

Back in the old home town for last weekend of the school holidays. Abandoned parkrun plans after a terrible sleep so did a steady run instead. Legs tired after bad sleep & 200 mile drive yesterday - it's hard not to feel down when your legs are tired and heavy a week before a race! Hopefully I will sleep better tonight and get a good week in.

Sorry I fell off.

Post injury I'm able to do long slow runs again, but avoid speed work (where I'm in danger of losing form). Have 20 mins physio exercises to do everyday but am back up to 14 miles. Will add up my monthly mileage in a mo (but had a two week holiday 😊)

ClimbingPenguin · 19/08/2017 17:04

So I've done 48.2 miles

MyBlackCat · 19/08/2017 19:23

Welcome back climbing it has been quiet around here

I really struggled around parkrun today still suffering the after effects of noro virus Sad

Due to long run tomorrow - wanted to run 2 hours, not sure if I'll manage that.

293.2

emummy · 20/08/2017 10:03

Welcome back climbing, great that you are back running again.
Take it easy MyBlackCat, norovirus is nasty!
Last long run before the hm; I'm missing my country lanes, running along beside busy roads! Felt ok though so fingers crossed.

cinnamongreyhound · 20/08/2017 10:54

Welcome back ClimbingPenguin!

You're so consistent with your running emummy, I'm sure you'll be fine!

Good luck with your long run MyBlackCat! Hope you are feeling back to your old self soon but be careful!

I felt awful by 6.30 Friday and was too ill to run yesterday so I went for a slow one today. Means I'll finish my 30 day challenge a day late but at least I will finish it! 307.3

Not you too cinnamon! It's nothing that spreads by internet contact I hope! Hope you are better soon

ClimbingPenguin · 20/08/2017 13:28

Sorry to hear about all the poorly people. Can't believe you're both getting out regardless.

Thanks for the welcome backs 🙂

Did a slow 5 mile recovery today and brunch with great running club. I followed my sensible head and did one lap while others did two.

Marvellousmarg · 20/08/2017 15:44

Thanks for the hill training advice. Like the lamppost one. I'm going to try that on the big long hill near my home.

18 miles to add from me. On holiday just now so 9 miles was along a beach. Very heavy going on the legs!

I had to take walk break because of the heat.

Happy it's done, now to relax for a couple of days 😀

Blister is now a monster, still not popped it, my toe will not win a modelling contract!

Marvellousmarg · 20/08/2017 15:45

oops. Too tired for sums.

330.3

MyBlackCat · 20/08/2017 19:36

I made it out for 10.3 big ones - longest run post baby, doing a couple of half's in the next 7 weeks, one as a training run and the second where I plan to smash my PB Grin

Still not 100% but as I'm HR training it's not quick so felt ok 👌

Sheusedtobesomeonelse · 21/08/2017 14:01

I was on holiday last week, at home - managed to run every morning : did 30 km in all so not bad considering i'm pre-pre preparing my preparation Grin

That hill looks impressive - after the stairs suggestion on here when I come in after my run i force myself to run up the stairs to my flat - 4th floor, no lift!! so might jsut as well run up!

Have also been doing Laird Hamiltons ultimate abs for a 3-4 weeks now, really effective but very painful!

I have bad toothache that i really need to sort out too before too long, hope everyone is feeling better soon Flowers

Sheusedtobesomeonelse · 21/08/2017 14:07

Oh, reading about the slow training here reminded me of an article i read in a magazine last month (runners world? can't remember which one) about how slow training is a great way to a PB / easier race, was really interesting !
I def. agree about the going slower, takes it out less on the legs so it's easier to get the kms in on the training, which, to me, is as important.
