OK so this month I've got 34mi under my belt (ran my first HM distance last Sunday), this year (since I started keeping track on Strava) 100mi :)

emummy · 09/05/2017 10:55

Lovely run in the sunshine on a hilly forest trail I haven't done for a while. Felt great! Dog had a lovely time too!
My miles plus charimito's make
143.5 I think

emummy · 09/05/2017 10:55

Oh and well done MyBlackcat, sounds like it was a tough race!

MyBlackCat · 09/05/2017 17:05

still I've just bought a tom tom spark 3 so am using the heart rate monitor, it's quite shocking how much slower I have to run to keep my heart rate down, I would usually run around 9mm pace on a steady run, I'm having to slow down to around 10:45mm (with buggy) to keep my heart rate below 150.

During my 10k at the weekend I hit 191bpm Shock

cinnamongreyhound · 11/05/2017 09:51

Good news on getting back to normal emummy!

Sounds like a lovely idea cantseethewoods, andnof coursenonce you've got up and done 5k why not do another 16k 🙈

Just over an hour is great for a tough course MyBlackCat!

Welcome charimito!

Sorry things have been tough Stilllearnin.

Been a bit absent this week! Struggling with ds3's sleeping and I'm knackered! New dog is still proving to be troublesome at times too Sad
Ran Friday and yesterday evening with my neighbour as she could make any other day.
Ran for myself Tuesday and had a great 5 mile run with dogs behaving. Ran with my friend who had a hysterectomy in march weds am as she's just starting back, ran more than I expected. Usual Thursday morning run today and it was glorious!!!!

Steady run, pace slow but managed an average HR of 140bpm Smile

stilllearnin · 12/05/2017 06:38

That's great blackcat I think I am beginning to get it. I only have 3.5 to add. My usual route while ds is in his tutor group. Seemed very hot to me.
Also thanks cinnamon I hope you're doing ok?

Cantseethewoods · 12/05/2017 06:44

Adding 8.5 from the last couple of days- playing catch up over the weekend as I was away with work MTW this week.

Nice steady run up & down 2 big hills in town this morning - not mountain big, just steep! Nice cool damp misty morning, really enjoyed it. Think the marathon training has actually made me stronger, hurray!

stilllearnin · 13/05/2017 10:06

Morning. 7.5 miles this morning. Not the easiest but getting there!

190.5

cinnamongreyhound · 13/05/2017 20:16

Not bad stilllearnin thanks, dh has been very detatched this week which I find makes me feel more stressed and quite lonely but otherwise all is good.

parkrun and run home 194

Well done everyone- we're ticking up the miles.

I did a gym commute yesterday of 7.5k (total). Then we were due to go to a bbq on the other side of the island at 4pm and I found myself asking DH if he minded driving over with the kids while I ran it, so got another 20k of mixed terrain in. Definitely deserved my bbq beer!!

First run after two weeks of illness and it was the town and gown 10km

Struggled the last few km and still struggling with needing the toilet mid run😳

Hi I've been having a read through this thread and wondered if you'd mind me tagging along??

I ran London three weeks ago (hi emummy!) after unexpectedly getting in on my first ballot. Before that I had done very little- a couple of slow 10ks two years ago which were very much endurance events rather than races, then a bit of a break from running, then got back into parkruns last summer. So I essentially went from 5k to 26.2 miles in 6 months with very little foundation, and my body is now not thanking me at all!

After a disaterous attempt at a short run two weeks ago, followed by a chest infection, I finally decided to get back out today thinking (unrealistically) that if I ran 26 miles three weeks ago then 10 should be easy. I managed 3 Blush. My joints complained at every step pretty much, and my feet now feel almost as sore as they did post marathon.

So I guess I maybe need to go back to basics a bit but not entirely sure how. I don't want to lose the ability to get the long runs in, but in hindsight I was very lucky not to get injured doing VLM.

Any advice would be welcome! I need to keep running for lots of reasons, and need a bit of accountability hence posting here, but not sure where I should be aiming now in terms of distance etc to improve my running without actually causing injury!

AuntieStella · 14/05/2017 20:04

I've run quite well (for me) this week, and am now optimistic that I'll get round my first 10k without disgracing myself. It included a new Parkrun PB!

I'm aiming to do two 8-10k runs a week, one faster 2 miler (is that what the jargon would call a tempo run?) and Parkrun. Does that sound Ok for the last couple of weeks to a 10k race?

Elba: I'm probably not the person who knows best about your predicament. But in your trainers shoes, I'd take it right back to 5k , walking and running as takes your fancy. And when secure running 5k, start a 5-10k programme. Build it right up from scratch again. You've done an amazing thing in completing a marathon, and so you know you can do it!

AuntieStella · 14/05/2017 20:05

Damned, forgot the arithmetic

cinnamongreyhound · 14/05/2017 22:03

Welcome Elba84! I have no idea never been stupid brace enough to attempt a marathon. If 3 was manageable today then I'd start there and work up.

Well done ClimbingPenguin! I've been close to entering the Cambridge one but the price stops me!

Planned 6 today but all our longer local routes are buggered but by the forestry commission and got fed up trying to piece bits on so did 5. Very muggy here this morning. 238.4

Elba Maybe do the 5-10k bridge plan to get your mojo back, and remember, "bad runs happen to good people".

Just a two-way gym commute today. It poured with rain. I arrived very soggy.

emummy · 15/05/2017 13:38

Hi Elba! I agree with the others, take the distance down and don't bother about pace. Just ate it easy for a bit. I am going to start training for a half at the end of May, till then 'me going for easy paced runs in the woods with the dog and just doing what I feel like. Give yourself time to recover from London, it was a lot of work!

ClimbingPenguin · 15/05/2017 14:04

I read somewhere yesterday take 26 days to recover from a marathon (then add in the illness). I often find I run out far too fast after a rest or event.

I ran my first half marathon when ill, then was destroyed for the next few weeks. First time I ran, my legs ran at their previous pace. I made it 0.5mile before going home and then arranged to run with someone I know is slow. Still do this now for when I've got a distance wall.

Elba84 · 15/05/2017 14:34

Thanks all- think I maybe just overestimated how quickly I would recover, especially as I feel fine day to day now. Had optimistically thought I would be at peak fitness after a marathon but feel the opposite is true! I think I've kind of blanked out how much work it actually was emummy!

5-10k sounds like a good plan for now. I go on holiday in three weeks, and it's an activity sort of thing (I sail/windsurf) so the last thing I want is sore toes! So I guess new plan is short easy runs as body allows then maybe HM training from mid June.

MyBlackCat · 15/05/2017 17:15

Saturdays parkrun and a buggy run this afternoon - very breezy out!

moutonfou · 16/05/2017 08:18

I'm doing my first 10k in three weeks on a Sunday.

I usually run three times a week, on Wed, Sat and Sun.

I will be skipping the Saturday run on race weekend to rest up before the Sunday, but should I skip the Wednesday run too? I'm trying to judge when to quit training and just rest and wait.

Know 10k isn't a big deal for some but I have only run 5k so far and want to give it a good (slow) shot and most importantly not get an injury.

moutonfou · 16/05/2017 08:47

P.s. to give an idea of my miles - 64.2 Smile

emummy · 16/05/2017 10:47

HI moutonfou. I would do the Wednesday run but keep it short, maybe about 3 miles or do it by time and just do 30 minutes. Good luck at the race!
Nice muddy forest run with dog this morning, not fast because we were right in among the trees, jumping over roots & rocks. Much fun!
