New year C25K. Anyone care to join me?

CaptainBraandPants · 01/01/2017 08:44

So, new year, new me, etc, etc.
I've done C25K before, then a program up to 10k.
Although I found lots of it hard, it did wonders for my health and fitness and also for my mental health.
But, then I stopped. I can't even remember why now.
So, I'm back at the beginning. The advantage I have this time is that I know I can do it as I've done it before.
It's pissing it down here, but I'm going to go and do it anyway. Grin
Anyone else?

Can i join? Am currently waiting for the baby to shush and go to sleep so I can go out!

About to finish week 3 here - only started back this week but found I didn't need to go right back to the start, yay!

jesstar · 22/01/2017 19:32

Sorry Chicken, I went ahead and did W4R1 this afternoon! I didn't fancy another early morning, dark, freezing cold run, and this afternoon was nice out, chilly but sunny so thought I would give it a go. It wasn't easy, but I managed to finish it albeit slowly. I think I'm definitely better going first thing in the morning though, as I ended up with a stitch which didn't help, and I don't usually have that issue in the morning.

It was strange though, I got the stitch and then Laura on the app started talking about more people getting stitches at week 4! But I think mine was because I didn't have an empty enough stomach. I hope it's not a recurring problem when I return to my morning runs.

Well done to everyone getting to this stage ... after we complete week 4, we're almost half-way through! Although this is probably the easier half Wink

Hope injuries subside, Bijou that sounds pretty nasty, I wouldn't go again until it's fully better?

Chicken and waiting, I probably won't run again til Weds morning, so we'll be roughly at the same stage - good luck all!

jesstar · 22/01/2017 19:48

And welcome Roll :)

bijouxxx · 22/01/2017 20:16

The more the merrier roll. I iced my leg for 45 minutes when I got in and it's feeling much better now, if it's still ok on Tuesday I think I will do W4R1 as it's only 4 minutes on my app, then try 5 again on Thursday.

Rollonbedtime7pm · 22/01/2017 20:57

Baby finally went to sleep so managed to do the last run of week 3 - was bloody freezing but glad I forced myself to go out!

KickAssAngel · 23/01/2017 00:06

I went back to W3 r2 today. I went on a womens march yesterday and although the march itself was short there was lots if standing around and i parked about a mile away, so this mornibf i felt quite achey and tired. I decided to take it a bit easy and found i could do it but a bit of a challenge.

ChickenPoop · 23/01/2017 17:34

W4R1 complete. It was surprisingly ok, but I was a little slower than I would've liked.

The usual well done to everyone else and hope the injuries heal.

waiting4inspiration · 23/01/2017 21:49

W4R1 completed here too. I also found it surprisingly ok Chicken and found I preferred the slightly shorter walks between the running - although it could just be that as the weather was slightly warmer I wasn't getting as cold on the walking sections. And it's been two days since I did the last run.

Well done on completing W3 Roll.

Hope all the injuries are healing nicely. My left ankle is slightly cranky still - strangely I have no pain at all when I run on it, but a few hours later and the first few steps have me hobbling a bit until it calms down.

runningfox · 24/01/2017 08:39

Hi, can I join?
I've never run before, although I play tennis and badminton (but am not at all fit). I have just downloaded the NHS C25K app and the podcasts and am hoping to start on Sunday or Monday. I'm slim so not aiming to lose weight, just massively improve my fitness which is pretty poor at the moment!

Evilstepmum01 · 24/01/2017 12:41

Great to hear how you;re finding w4, from wk1 it looks scarily hard! Am managing to get into the running now, even EvilDog has it figured! Walk/drag then run/bounce like a fanny!
Done W1R1 3 times now due to illness and not understanding how to use the app, but thats ok as I wanted to ease my way in and not get sore shins. Extra warmups/cool down stretches are fab!
runningfox I've just started too, let me know how you get on! I;m also slim (or I was!) but have put on a little weight round the middle and want to be a bit fitter!

anonymousbird · 24/01/2017 12:49

Hello everyone, you are all doing a great job. I'd like to join the group, though have already started the programme.

After a bit of a blip, I am back on track with week 4 (though accidentally hit week 5 day 1 this morning in my muddle with the dog and my music and thought the first run was rather long!)

Will continue with Wk4D2 either tomorrow or the next day.

I am aiming to get fitter and lose some weight (around one stone) and give the family the shock of their bloody lives when I can, hopefully, do the 5k. They don't even know I am doing this!

CaptainBraandPants · 24/01/2017 13:39

Welcome running and anonymous
Thank you everyone for your well wishes about my injury. i haven't ran since Saturday and my leg feels mainly better, although it pulls a bit walking downstairs. I think I'll have a go at w4r2 tonight, although won't get chance to run until 9pm or thereabouts.
Good luck everyone else and bijou, I hope your leg is better.

bijouxxx · 24/01/2017 14:06

Leg was feeling much better yesterday and this morning (the ice worked wonders) so I decided to try to go out today. Just this minute got back and the 5 min warm up was fine (no pain at all) but within 2 seconds of running was in a lot of pain again! So I've hobbled back home again and am going to make myself rest until at least Saturday!

SorrelSoup · 24/01/2017 14:51

Hello everyone! I've just completed W1 R1. This was actually last year's resolution so I'm a bit behind. I've never ever run in my life. I'm 2 stone overweight and 40 this year. I want to achieve! Anyway, it nearly killed me; I really struggled like I knew I would. The only trouble is that there's nowhere to run round here. I went running around a field by some dodgy flats but had dh with me. I'm going to have to come up with a route. This is what has always stopped me before.

jesstar · 25/01/2017 08:48

W4R2 done this morning, pleased that I haven't given up yet!

bijou that sounds really painful, may be you will need longer to rest up?

Sorrel well done on your first run, it will get easier. Yes, try and plan a route before you go out, or are there any nice parks near you to run in? I think it helps to have a route that you're comfortable running around, otherwise it'll put you off going out, especially in the cold and dark!

Have to say I was hoping to lose a few pounds, but nothing so far ... at least I'm not still gaining weight, I probably need to run a bit faster and for longer before I notice real changes (if at all), but at least I'll be a little fitter by the end of it - I hope :)

ChickenPoop · 25/01/2017 11:52

Well done Jess and welcome Sorrel

I'm running in a few hours. It will be a banana run as I want to go early, so there's a high chance of failure. My self survey suggests that I really do run better within 90 minutes of a big meal. Maybe I was built wrong as everybody else seems to run better on empty!

Jess you will DEFINITELY be fitter by the end of it. Definitely. As for weight loss are you monitoring your calorie intake? If not then unfortunately it really is all about the food. 5k generally doesn't burn off much more than about a bar of chocolate Sad. I calorie count and don't log my exercise burns which allows me to go over my allowance on the weekend without worrying too much (all sounds much more complicated than it is). If I can get up to 10k and do that regularly then I'm hoping I'll be able to eat like a king Grin

anonymousbird · 25/01/2017 13:12

After accidentally venturing to week 5 rather than week 4 yesterday, most definitely recovery day today. Back to it tomorrow.

I promise to those just starting, it does get easier even if it feels like it never will. I hadn't run for 20+ years and am 47 so if I can get half way through the programme anyone can.

1000hobnobs · 25/01/2017 15:23

anonymous enjoy your well deserved rest! Fancy jumping ahead! Shock

W4R2 complete - just. I was over enthusiastic in the first 3 minutes and nearly stuffed up the whole thing. I've had to slow down this week. I was hoping to stay at 6mins p/km but clearly that is an over enthusiastic target. Today I was 6mins 9 secs.

ChickenPoop · 25/01/2017 15:30

Also just back from my W4D2. Felt tougher than day one (I blame the banana) but glad it's done. Getting a bit twitchy about week 5. I think day 2 will be a stinker...

halfgirlhalfturnip · 25/01/2017 15:56

Doing W4 R3 tonight . poop I am saddened to learn that all my sweating and stumbling will not have an impact on my flabby body. I may have to pretend to myself that I haven't read that to keep up the enthusiasm.

ChickenPoop · 25/01/2017 16:29

turnip I'm not saying it won't have any impact at all, but that it's very, very easy to eat your earnings so don't assume you can run, eat more and expect to get smaller (nice as that would be).

If you want to firm up and change the shape of your body then ideally you want to be doing weight work (body weight, free weights or barbells). Squats, lunges and all that jazzle. Cardio is good for burning calories (and your lungs) but not building muscle - this is why I'm "skinny fat" Sad too much cardio during weight loss and not enough weight work just resulted in a shrunken version of my larger self.

I really need to do some strength training so will find a way to incorporate it when I'm feeling less lazy... If you want to try something at home then have a look at Fitness Blender they have hundreds of videos on their own website and also videos on YouTube.

If you want to lose weight then I'm a strong advocate of My Fitness Pal for calorie counting. It works but you have to accept that the road is long and you are permanently changing the way you eat/prepare food. I've lost 50lbs since 2014 and I'm still not done.

End of preach Blush

Evilstepmum01 · 25/01/2017 17:19

Thanks poop I was going to ask you about watching what I eat too, is my fitness pal an app? I do metafit insanity and boxercise to try and tone up and strengthen my core. It's working, my muffin top and saddle bags are better but I need to lose about half a stone. Hence running regularly will help I hope! But I need to change my diet and that's where I'm struggling! Dh helping with portion control and we're eating less crap but need to make more effort! W1R2 tonight, feeling ready for it and chuffed cos I found the music button on the app! Good running everyone!

Also it's haggis for tea tonight! With mashed neeps and tatties! Probably loads of calories but has to be done! Grin

waiting4inspiration · 25/01/2017 17:40

W2R2 just done here too. I was not looking forward to it and nearly didn't go I so many excuses. But go I did. Took it easy, and it was actually okay - even the uphill jogging parts. The hardest bit was the warm-up walk as it was quite chilly in the fog and despite walking briskly I could't get warm.

My left foot is still a bit sore - but in different places at different times. And sometimes not at all. Very odd.

Well done to everyone on W4 - seems like only a few weeks ago we thought we'd never be able to run for five minutes and here we are! To all those a few weeks behind, if we can do it, you can do it!
