New year C25K. Anyone care to join me?

So, new year, new me, etc, etc.
I've done C25K before, then a program up to 10k.
Although I found lots of it hard, it did wonders for my health and fitness and also for my mental health.
But, then I stopped. I can't even remember why now.
So, I'm back at the beginning. The advantage I have this time is that I know I can do it as I've done it before.
It's pissing it down here, but I'm going to go and do it anyway. Grin
Anyone else?

I got my arse up and went out, but I did some warm-ups first and stretches after. shins dont feel as bad!
If you look on page 5 of this thread, the OP answered me with a link to a running website that gives you hints and tips on how to avoid them.
Handy!! :)

W3D2 done. I found it really boring today Confused. I think the 90 seconds are too short, yet I feel like week 4's 5 minutes will be too long...

I think I need to do a bit of fitness blending to add some variety. Also thinking of going back to some yoga but I'm not very good at doing too many things at once - it usually leads to me doing nothing.

CaptainBraandPants · 19/01/2017 19:38

Evening. Glad to see everyone is getting up and about. I've had a hectic week and not managed to run since Sunday. I was getting really twitchy this afternoon thinking "I've got to run today".
So, home, dinner prepped and then as soon as DH walked through the door, I walked out Grin W3R3 done. It went better than I expected, but I'm another one who is worried about w4. I figure I'll repeat it as many times as I need to, until I can run three times in a row.
Kick proper rest and not doing too much too soon is really important to avoid shin splints and other injuries.

W3 complete! Did R3 this morning, it wasn't too bad. I'm really dreading W5 when it seems to jump up from 8 mins running to 20 min! I have usually struggled to run >10 mins in the past without stopping, so not sure I'll manage that one.

But W4 to get through first, starting on Mon. I'm hoping this regime is building stamina for the later weeks, but we shall see. I also need to plan better to avoid running uphill ... I say hill, it's just a gentle slope really Grin

bijouxxx · 20/01/2017 09:26

I've not commented in a while but I see some of you are worried about the sharp rate that the runs increase in the next couple of weeks. If you struggle at all I use the Zenlabs app which is slightly more staggered than the official nhs podcast Smile

1000hobnobs · 20/01/2017 09:54

Jess done worry too much about week 5. Previously I've always found the 20 min run surprisingly manageable. However, in week 6 you go back to walking breaks and I found that harder Confused.

I'm definitely finding 90 seconds too short now so hopefully when I start week 4, 3 minutes will be manageable and 5 minutes difficult...

CaptainBraandPants · 20/01/2017 14:04

I'm not too worried about running for 5 minutes in week 4, I'm more concerned about the shorter recovery times.
But I know we can do it.
Btw, when I did this before, I then went on and did bridge to 10k, so I did used to be able to run 10k without a break. Shock Did it once, can do it again. I hope

I did kickboxing last night and today I am just soooo tired. It just seems like too much hard work to even walk across the room. I'm def. having a rest day today & tomorrow and then hope to do a run on Sun.

halfgirlhalfturnip · 20/01/2017 15:32

I'm attempting first run of week 4 so shall report back shortly. Well after I watch a quick modern family 😊

bijouxxx · 20/01/2017 15:41

I was really ahead of everyone at the start of this thread but after even more faffing about on my part I think I'm at a similar stage to most as I'm doing W4R1 tonight (again! For about the fifth time) hopefully you can all help keep me motivated to continue past W4D2 this time!

halfgirlhalfturnip · 20/01/2017 20:34

It was actually okay - is it normal to walk quicker than you run Grin?

waiting4inspiration · 21/01/2017 00:23

W3R3 done today. Went out just after mid-day - pavements were still quite frosty in places and I'm a bit of a wimp when it comes to anything remotely icy. The second 3 min run was still quite tiring, but I'm either walking faster or jogging faster because I went slightly further than last time.

Halfgirl - very pleased to hear that your W4R1 went okay. Bijouxxx how was your run?

bijouxxx · 21/01/2017 09:34

waiting I didn't find it great but I was feeling really nauseous before I went out so maybe wasn't the best idea. I'm ok doing the 3 minute runs but did actually find that when I was about 2 minutes into the 4 minute run my body seemed to regulate itself a little bit and it became slightly more comfortable, I'm hoping this is proof that when it suddenly jumps to 20 minutes we will all manage ok as it's the starting off that's the hard bit? That's what I hope anyway

CaptainBraandPants · 21/01/2017 13:46

Well done everyone.
I'm off to do my w4r1 later, pleased that it seems doable.

ChickenPoop · 21/01/2017 18:10

W3D3 done. On to week 4... Confused

I did my short route today which unfortunately means the second two runs were uphill. It was tough. Still not convinced I will manage 5 minutes, especially with the short recovery times, but we shall see on Monday.

Well done Chicken and Scarf
I managed w4r1 and it was doable, definitely had to slow down, but I managed the 5 minute runs. In fact, the second 3 minute run felt really short in comparison!
I have pulled my left calf a bit, didn't stop me but was sore at the end, so I hope it recovers quickly. Was hoping to run again tomorrow, but I my have to wait until Monday.
Music on week 4 wasn't great. Might ditch Laura when I get to week 7 as there aren't any intervals from then on and I can just time that on my watch.
KOKO everyone Flowers

CaptainBraandPants · 22/01/2017 06:39

Sore calf this morning. I'm hobbling around, so no run today for me Sad.
I hope it's better by tomorrow so I can run then.

Well done everyone! Sorry to hear Captain about your injury, hopefully it will get better quickly so as to not interfere with the program too much. I'll be starting W4 tomorrow, and it definitely helps that others have found it doable.

CactusFred · 22/01/2017 13:53

Hi everyone. I was going to start a 9 week thing at the local rugby club to do c25k but I can't get childcare for the time it's on so have decided just to do it on my own at the gym.

Which is the best app for this? If I'm gonna do it I need all the help I can get!

bijouxxx · 22/01/2017 15:06

Cactus I use the fitness 22 '5k runner' app (yellow logo) and really like it, it is slightly more staggered than the official nhs one but I think you complete it in the same time, there's just 3 different length runs in some weeks rather than the same run 3 times, if that makes any sense!

ChickenPoop · 22/01/2017 15:58

I use the Active C25K app. I think the runs are the same length as the NHS one.

Captain hope you're pain free soon. It's so frustrating when you want to exercise but can't.

Jess looks like we're on the same page. I'm also starting week 4 tomorrow, so good luck!

bijouxxx · 22/01/2017 16:59

Well I have just tried and failed W4R2 miserably. As I started to walk after the first 5 minute run I got a shooting pain up my right leg and within seconds was in agony, by the time it came to running again it had eased up a lot so I started running but only lasted 2 minutes (wasn't even slightly out of breath though which was a positive!) I stopped and hobbled home and now the pain is getting worse and worse Sad. Hopefully will be back to normal quickly!!

waiting4inspiration · 22/01/2017 17:45

Ouch Captain and bijouxxx. Hope you both recover soon. Bijouxxx I wouldn't say you failed miserably - sounds like you did more than half the running and none of us could even run for five minutes a few weeks ago! That's not a miserable failure. That's real progress.

Chicken and Jess - Monday is start of W4 for me too but I can't go until the evening so hope it's not icy outside.

halfgirlhalfturnip · 22/01/2017 18:33

Everyone is doing great - doesn't it help all being around the same stage?! Hope your injuries abate overnight bijouxx and captain. That's me finished W 4 R 2 tonight and it was okay but I think I am going reallllly slow - I suppose I can work on that along the way.. As usual I couldn't be bothered but so glad I made myself do it.
