New year C25K. Anyone care to join me?

CaptainBraandPants · 01/01/2017 08:44

So, new year, new me, etc, etc.
I've done C25K before, then a program up to 10k.
Although I found lots of it hard, it did wonders for my health and fitness and also for my mental health.
But, then I stopped. I can't even remember why now.
So, I'm back at the beginning. The advantage I have this time is that I know I can do it as I've done it before.
It's pissing it down here, but I'm going to go and do it anyway. Grin
Anyone else?

Well done on completing week 5 maggot

I'm off out shortly to do w6r2 can't believe how far into the programme I've got, I thought I was going to last 3 weeks tops

Esssa · 17/03/2017 16:59

Just done w2r2. I'm surprised at how well I'm coping considering the pain meds I have to take to keep going on a day to day basis. I'm hoping as I get fitter I can reduce those though.

Used the fitbit app to track my shuffle for the first time today. Blush can't believe how long it would take me to get round 5k at the moment!

CaptainBraandPants · 17/03/2017 19:33

Maggot That is a brilliant achievement, well done.
Tsoto Great running, you're almost there.
Esssa Well done, I'm really pleased for you. It's hard enough when not on pain killers, so I am very impressed. Don't worry about speed, it doesn't matter - you're going a heck of a lot faster than all those sitting on the couch.

My mega is week is over. Tonight is takeaway and wine. Grin I will be running tomorrow and I will hopefully mange at least three runs next week, when life gets a bit more back to normal.

Thanks captain I'm not sure it's as impressive as you think but I'm happy with it so far. Also down a stone from the beginning of the year. Taken longer than it should but hopefully it'll stay off this way

Tsotofamily · 19/03/2017 15:34

Well done Esssa sounds like your doing great.

Completed w6 today Smile 22 mins no walking and I managed to do it without stopping, I'm so pleased with myself

Esssa · 19/03/2017 15:51

It definitely sounds like you are doing great Tsoto! Don't think I'd be able to breathe if I attempted that at the moment. Still dreading the 5 and 8 minute runs that I know are looming on the horizon. Last run of week 2 today. Looks like being another after dark one. Means I have to run in circles to stay in lit areas.

JenniferYellowHat1980 · 19/03/2017 19:39

Hi all. I've just completed week one and will be starting week two tomorrow. Inspired by walking challenges with friends using my Fitbit, I'm also spinning twice a week.

So far I'm using my home treadmill to do C25k as I'm overweight and feel daft Blush

Tsotofamily · 19/03/2017 21:03

Esssa - I was dreading the 5 and 8 minute runs too but somehow I managed to do it. Im still amazed at how far I've come, as before the only fitness I would do is walking the dogs, doing the school run and the odd walk to park/shops with kids. Oh and maybe the odd workout video

Jennifer - well done on completing week 1

BazingaBaby · 20/03/2017 10:45

Hi all!! Never thought I'd say this but I've just done w4r1! Paced myself and bloody loved it! Thanks for all your tips and encouragement all of you, love this thread.

Keep going all of you, you're doing so so well just pressing play and giving it a go. I always put it off before thinking I'd never get far anyway but I am shocked I've managed to get so far. This will be my 6th week running the programme and I can only second the advice to repeat weeks if you feel you need to, it helped so much to feel a bit more 'even' before stepping it up.

Off now for a cuppa and banana! Brew

Esssa · 20/03/2017 11:18

I agree, just by giving it a go we are all doing better than the ones not trying. Spent all day yesterday aching like crazy after doing some digging the other day. Didn't think I'd manage to do my run but once I got going the aches eased and I did it all and a few extra steps besides. My knees aren't so happy about it today though so I may leave two days before I go again.

Has anyone got a tracker for their runs and recommended it? My fitbit doesn't seem very accurate. W2 r2+3 have tracked completely differently with 0.79k for one and 2.2k for the other. Apparently I was out longer and burnt more calories on the shorter run??? Something is off and would like something a bit better. At least my 5k time wouldn't be as bad as that first run suggested!

Madcats · 20/03/2017 12:57

Well done everybody. I've ducked out of running for the past few days and overdid the wine yesterday so and I think I'll repeat wk5r2 tomorrow (pouring with rain here).

Regarding Apps, I have been attempting to use the free version of runtastic. It doesn't seem very happy working alongside Laura (NHS app). Either it crashes or the NHS App does at least once on my runs, but it does seem to pick up quite a lot of detail (speed/how long it takes to run a km/altitude) so I might try using it without Laura after week 9 before writing it off completely.

I was thinking about starting a whole new thread about Apps (because I have a hunch that it is the geeky maps, stats and graphs I can look at online that keep me motivated to carry on (and the small matter of a 5k charity run in June).

amazonianwoman · 20/03/2017 13:45

Can I join? Grin

Just completed W3R1. I'm 4 stone overweight Blush and haven't done any running for 2 years due to plantar fasciitis in right foot. That's pretty much gone now, to be replaced by burning pain in ball of left foot and in toes - anyone any ideas? Wondering whether I should invest in new trainers...

halfgirlhalfturnip · 20/03/2017 14:02

I'm back - no more excuses. I'm going out tonight and will start again at week 3
So annoyed at myself - I remember someone asking why so many people give up around week 4 and thinking that wouldn't be me!!!!

JenniferYellowHat1980 · 20/03/2017 18:01

God but Laura and the C25K soundtrack are annoying.

BazingaBaby · 20/03/2017 21:58

Esssa, I track my runs on my Apple Watch and it's pretty accurate I think. The only thing I'm not keen on is it will only show me pace and not speed but I'm learning how to use the pace to keep myself steady (still think I must be the slowest ever!)

Amazonian, I bought some fairly cheap running trainers as my usual trainers were giving me sore patches and I've had no problems since I switched. What trainers have you got?

Halfgirl, you can do it! I'm determined not to give up now I've got to wk4! This is the longest I've ever stuck with anything so using you all as my inspiration.

Evilstepmum01 · 20/03/2017 23:23

halfgirlhalfturnip-oh dear! I did the same after being ill, lost my motivation at week 4! been doing wee runs and just completed week 4 for the second time! Keep going!

Amazonian-I had plantar fascitis after having my baby, so I made sure I bought high-arched running trainers to support my arches. Karrimors are good for this! sports direct sell them.

Beginning week 5 tomorrow. determined to do it!! Grin

thats after the frickin hail, thundersnow and gale force winds have buggered off!

amazonianwoman · 21/03/2017 07:07

Thanks evil and bazing I have some Asics, had a gait analysis around 3 years ago. This new problem definitely doesn't feel like plantar fasciitis - perhaps it's just my foot rebelling to the excess weight it's having to carry! They don't feel particularly cushioned or supportive though, so might look into getting some new ones.
Also did strenuous half an hour on static bike last night, so think today will be a rest day apart from fast dog walk Smile

Chattermummy · 21/03/2017 10:15

Can I join you all? Last night I went out for a run for first time in 6 years and through the hail stones I did week 1 run 1. A bit achy today but I will live (I hope)

Madcats · 21/03/2017 16:32

Oh my giddy aunt, I did wk5r3 today! Having made the effort to get outside I was all set to repeat wk5r2 but I thought I'd give it a go. I definitely slowed down but felt REALLY chuffed. Then I bumped into a neighbour who was super encouraging (she did it a few years ago and is about a decade younger) so that was nice.

Amazonian I was going to suggest "gait analysis" (it might have changed, I suppose). Could you try thicker socks/memory foam insoles/running on grass or dirt tracks? I don't think it is a disaster to miss a couple of days. I am simply astonished how my "fitness" has built up even though I hadn't run for 4 or 5 days.

My 5 weeks have taken me 7 but one of the things I have found is that my feet started aching after switching back to hard boots/plimsoles and walking a lot that day. I am a bit of a stamper, it would seem. Insoles certainly helped my aches.

I'll be routing for you Evil; maybe promise yourself a treat after each run.

amazonianwoman · 21/03/2017 19:49

Thanks madcats I definitely agree I need more cushioning. I got some birthday money today so I'm off to a running shop tomorrow Grin
I just walked for an hour today in very sturdy wellies and left foot was playing up a bit - wondering if all the walking I've been doing in wellies might actually be the problem??
Legs really aching today!!

Evilstepmum01 · 21/03/2017 22:11

Thanks Madcats I ran sunday, gym last night, so tonight some Ben & Jerrys! Now thats motivation!! Well done for completing week 5, I start it tomorrow! Yikes!

Welcome Chatter, any run is a good run!

I was going to suggest a running shop amazonian-happy shopping! Grin

to motivate myself, I have signed up to do the 5k Race for Life in May! None of my friends wanted to do it, so its just me!

Bollocks!!! Shock

seemed a good idea at the time.........

RubyGoat · 21/03/2017 22:18

Did W3R1 today. Felt a lot harder than week 2... I've also started doing a few Burpees in the morning. Not many, just about a dozen. And they are a bit slow, I can't jump up, more like stepping up from the plank position, but they are quite hard so I'm happy with that for now.

Personally I wouldn't compromise on running shoes. Not that cheap necessarily = bad, but you definitely need to make sure you've got something that fits properly & gives correct support.

Esssa · 22/03/2017 14:10

I'm an android gal bazinga so not likely to go apple! My fitbit does track but only seems to do road side runs. It wouldn't track round the country park today.
I'm still trying to understand pace. My w2r3 average was 10'56" can anyone decode it for me? I'm measuring my distance in km on the fitbit if that makes any difference.
Just done w3r1 and thankfully found it easier than I expected. Prefered having 4 runs instead of 6 and luckily my first 3 minute run was on a slight down hill so may have cheated a bit. Completed it to the letter though so I'm quite pleased.

Tsotofamily · 22/03/2017 20:52

Hi all

Welcome newcomers and well done for getting out there. In fact well done to everyonefor getting out specially in this rubbish weather.

W7r1 done today - whoop whoop Smile 25 mins no walking

Madcats · 22/03/2017 21:50

I have a hazy recollection of what a burpee might be (best for me to blank it for the moment). Looking back, wk3 was a bit of a "let's not run today" week too....It is still quite a step up from sitting around drinking tea or wine each night! Week 4 seemed okay once I'd sorted out an app to show me how far I had run (ish).

@Esssa I think that that means you took 10 minutes to run a km (so about 6kn/hour) but I might be wrong.

I hope to hang on Tsoto's coat tails tomorrow (wk6r1)
