New year C25K. Anyone care to join me?

CaptainBraandPants · 01/01/2017 08:44

So, new year, new me, etc, etc.
I've done C25K before, then a program up to 10k.
Although I found lots of it hard, it did wonders for my health and fitness and also for my mental health.
But, then I stopped. I can't even remember why now.
So, I'm back at the beginning. The advantage I have this time is that I know I can do it as I've done it before.
It's pissing it down here, but I'm going to go and do it anyway. Grin
Anyone else?

W9R3 done! Can't quite believe it, it was tough but I did it. I don't worry so much about distance or speed, as long as I get the 30 mins of exercise done! I probably should push myself harder but I don't want to risk being put off altogether.

Well done bazing, lego & lola, it is great that you're getting out there. I struggled with motivation but took it slowly.

Not sure what is next, probably will try to stick to at least two runs a week, may be just 25 mins to be honest, if I'm going to stick at it for the long-term. Good luck all ...

WhatIsWrongWithMePlease · 09/03/2017 21:16

I'm on w5r2 tomorrow. Two 8 Mon runs with a 5 mins walking break I think. I'm looking forward to it! I think the reason the arch of my foot was hurting was because I was running in really thick mud and was bending my foot to grip my shoe if that makes sense? It's been sunny the last few days so hopefully the ground is less muddy tomorrow morning!

GottaGetThisDone · 10/03/2017 14:39

Downloaded the RunDouble app - its perfect Smile have fast forwarded the runs I have already done so i m now at 9/27.
Due to a sudden desperate need for the toilet I had to cut short the session from the 2nd 3minute run to get home PDQ Blush - jogging made the issue much worse so needed to walk the rest, so may do another session tomorrow instead of a rest day.

lolalament · 10/03/2017 15:12

W2R2 done! Mostly uneventful, except the Sainsburys delivery van that tried to run me over - this is the first run I've done during the day so it was daylight, I was on the path, and my running outfit is a ridiculously bright colour!

Tsotofamily · 10/03/2017 22:09

Hi all and welcome to the new runners. Great to see everyone doing so well.

Done w5r2 today

BWatchWatcher · 11/03/2017 07:34

I have w4r3 today, couldn't get out during the week.
Will have coffee and go I think.

BWatchWatcher · 11/03/2017 07:45

Eugh rain Confused

WhatIsWrongWithMePlease · 11/03/2017 07:54

My w5r2 didn't go to plan yesterday as we ended up rescuing a lamb that had got stuck in a fence!

BWatchWatcher · 11/03/2017 09:07

Brilliant! Poor lamb :(

CaptainBraandPants · 11/03/2017 09:11

Hello Blush
I got injured and had to avoid this thread as I got too upset.
I'm going to try again as I really miss running. Realistically, I probably should restart at w1r1, but psychologically, I don't want to do that. So, I am going to do w2r1 later today.
I haven't fully caught up on the thread, but I'm so impressed with everyone. Well done Flowers

And welcome to all the new runners, I better get cracking before you all leave me behind. Grin

WhatIsWrongWithMePlease · 11/03/2017 09:26

Oh no captain. How did you injure yourself? Hope you are better now.

CaptainBraandPants · 11/03/2017 09:47

Thanks What. I was running, doing the second 5 minute run in the program, when suddenly I heard a pop and literally jumped in the air in pain. Sod's law meant I was about as far from home as I could get, so I hobbled home. Sad I'd basically torn my calf muscle on that side, so not serious but it has taken weeks for it to stop hurting completely. I'd been having niggles on that side before this happened -which I sensibly ignored so I didn't want to restart until I was completely pain free, which I am now. I am very nervous about it happening again, though, so I shall have to see how it goes.

OP posts:
WhatIsWrongWithMePlease · 11/03/2017 09:56

Oh no! I'm pleased you are pain free now but it's so frustrating when you're injured and you have to be patient but you just want to get out there! I'm always having trouble with my calves. I stretch them about 5/6 times a day which seems to help a bit. I took a two week break from running when I was on week 3 (I was ill, then was on holiday) and managed to go straight back to where I left off. So you might not need to go right back to the beginning. Let us know how your run today goes.

BWatchWatcher · 11/03/2017 11:37

Noooo poor you @Captain! That's dreadful.
Flowers

I've started doing a 10 minute yoga video after a run. I get it off the fitbit yoga app.

CaptainBraandPants · 11/03/2017 17:45

Well I did it. Grin
I decided to try week 3 and although I stupidly managed to sync the second 3 minute run with going up hill, I still managed it. Leg felt absolutely fine, it was the rest of me that struggled. But I completed it without walking when I should have ran, so very pleased.
BWatch Thanks for he flowers and yes, I always do at least 5 minutes and usually 10 or more minutes of yoga afterwards. I have an app (Yoga Studio, it's very good) that has specific post running workouts. I did the 10 min one today.
The positives of running today versus when I last ran at the end of January is that the weather was significantly better and I weigh 8.2lbs less. Both very good things Smile

BWatchWatcher · 11/03/2017 22:47

Ooo great! I've downloaded YogaStudio. I've been using the fitbit app.

CaptainBraandPants · 12/03/2017 06:48

I hope you like it BWatch. I think she has quite a soothing voice. The only problem I have is that I look nothing like her as I'm trying to contort my body into all those strange shapes. Grin

RubyGoat · 12/03/2017 20:25

Captain - glad your leg is better now. I know exactly what you mean about being nervous of doing it again. I sprained my ankle several years ago, it turned out I'd torn all my ligaments on the outer side of my ankle / foot. Dreadfully painful & I needed physio for ages after, sadly didn't get it straightaway though, I have a permanently thicker ankle due to the scar tissue. Have you had / booked physio?

Did W2R1 today. Really hard, not sure if it's because it's a step up from last week, that I've had a few days break, or that I've only just recovered from a migraine (hence the break). I get partial paralysis & pretty shocking nerve pain from them (besides the headache) so it would be pointless trying until it's over (plus exercise can bring them on or make them worse). Legs not too bad this evening, so probably I was just a bit too eager to get back out there. I did enjoy it though.

I think I'm going to try doing some core exercises on my non run days - plank etc. Flabby middle section is pretty depressing.

Madcats · 13/03/2017 13:57

Hi everybody. Can I jump onto this thread too?

I started C25k in February having never run before and have just done week 5 run 1 (I've been warned about W5R3) being coached by the lovely Laura on the NHS app. I was sceptical at first, but I am dead chuffed I have got this far (even if I did postpone a few runs over the past 6 weeks).

For those of you at the start with some aches and pains I found a hot bath really helpful (I still had some Epsom salts left over from my January detox so popped some of those in). No good for Captain's injury - ouch.

Spring has really kicked off here; March seems a lovely time of year to start running (or at least it is here, down in south-west England).

Tsotofamily · 13/03/2017 21:38

Went out and done w5r3 today nearly killed me. Was meant to do 20 mins no walking managed 16-17 then had 1 min or so walk before finishing slightly annoyed with myself x

Madcats · 13/03/2017 23:00

Tsoto....that still sounds pretty amazing to me. I'm not sure I've met anybody that did W5R3 first time around.

Tsotofamily · 15/03/2017 19:44

thanks Madcats -i think it helps im doing it with a friend

Done w6r1 tonight, i can feel that my pace has picked up slightly

CaptainBraandPants · 15/03/2017 20:45

Well done Lego and welcome Madcats. I've never tried epsom salts, I think I should give them a go. I do like a good, long soak in a hot bath.
I agree with Madcats, Tsoto that sounds great. Bet you would have been thrilled with running 16-17 minutes on w1r1.

After my run on Saturday, I haven't ran since Blush. Did a brutal circuits class on Sunday and pretty much couldn't walk Monday! Since then, I've been mega busy at work. Realistically, unless I manage to go tomorrow, which is unlikely, I don't think I will run again until Saturday. But, no excuses Saturday, I will definitely run.

MaggotStew · 16/03/2017 22:20

I completed Wk 5 today. I remember lurking on this thread when I was starting out and being equally impressed by those who were weeks ahead of me and horrified by the thought of getting there. But I did it.

I'm 40, hadn't run at all since I was at school, but am now much fitter, healthier, my Fitbit tells me my resting heart rate is so much lower. I can't believe how my BMI has dropped from overweight to almost at that magic 'healthy'.

I tried C2K twice before but always blamed a crunchy knee for never getting beyond week 2 - I am amazed how much stronger my knee(s) are and as long as I am gentle then it's fine. I've had to repeat weeks when they haven't gone well, but have learnt not to see that as failure (or cope with the failure - I'm not sure which, but the end point is the same!).

I'm converted. :)
