New year C25K. Anyone care to join me?

So, new year, new me, etc, etc.
I've done C25K before, then a program up to 10k.
Although I found lots of it hard, it did wonders for my health and fitness and also for my mental health.
But, then I stopped. I can't even remember why now.
So, I'm back at the beginning. The advantage I have this time is that I know I can do it as I've done it before.
It's pissing it down here, but I'm going to go and do it anyway. Grin
Anyone else?

Well done Tsoto, Waiting & Zippy. It's hard to get motivated with bad weather outside Lego, don't beat yourself up about it - at least you're doing some exercise at home. Got be better than nothing.

Completed W8 this morning, still finding it tough but I think it's a mental barrier.

I'm not too fussed about speed, and I think 5k will be my happy limit/30 minutes. More than I've ever done before, just hope I continue with a regular rhythm once the podcasts are done.

RubyGoat · 02/03/2017 12:22

W1R1 done, despite drizzle & hail! It actually wasn't as hard as I'd feared & now I feel fab, yay Grin. And, I'm very happy as I'd been worried I'd develop a migraine (I suffer from chronic hemiplegic migraines & am medicated for them) but nope, nothing!

Tsotofamily · 02/03/2017 21:54

Well done lego, it'seems such a good feeling once you've completed a run.

I done w4r2 this afternoon such an amazing feeling once it was done

Tsotofamily · 04/03/2017 12:51

Going out for w4r3 shortly

waiting4inspiration · 04/03/2017 16:37

Well done everyone on getting out in awful weather. Jesstar how's W9 looking?

Hope you had a good run Tsoto.

Happy to report I successfully completed W9R3 yesterday evening. So now I need a proper plan to keep on increasing the distance sensibly!

Zippyzulu · 04/03/2017 17:44

Well done waiting4inspiration. I'm sticking to doing 5k a few times a week and adding in one interval session for a few weeks before building up to 10k. I'm not following a plan at the moment other than charting my times... completed 5k in 30.45 minutes today so I'm happy with that!

BWatchWatcher · 05/03/2017 08:00

Hi!
I'm on w4 d3.
I was close to completing last year but the weather in October put me off. Nice day today though.

jesstar · 05/03/2017 08:10

Congrats on completing waiting!

W9R1 done this morning, 2 more runs to go! I don't think I'll go on to a 10k podcast, but hopefully can stick to at least 2 runs a week going forwards.

RubyGoat · 05/03/2017 13:48

W1R2 completed today. At the gym this time, as I didn't fancy another soggy run. I wanted to do it yesterday but had a migraine the last 2 days, gah. I suspect I might struggle getting 3 runs in every week at this rate, at least at the beginning. I'm going to give it a damned good go though.

RubyGoat · 05/03/2017 13:50

Oh and congratulations on finishing waiting. Do you have a local running shop or group that you could ask at? Or a facebook group?

Evilstepmum01 · 05/03/2017 22:16

Congratulations waiting! and well done everyone else! Lego, great to see you started!
After being ill week before last, I ended up not exercising at all for two weeks! hangs head in shame
Back on it tonight with a W4 run. Surprisingly easy to run tonight, didnt follow a podcast, just ran between the bits I usually stop and start!
Re-starting W4 Tues and back to the gym also!

happy running!!

BazingaBaby · 05/03/2017 22:20

Can I please join you all?? I started a few weeks ago now. Doing the NHS C25K podcasts as truth be told I'm pretty overweight and as unfit as ever Blush Did W1 twice as I wanted to feel like I was 'ok' if that makes sense before moving up. Did week two on Monday, Thursday and Saturday this week and it's been oddly mixed, R1 I found ok, R2 I enjoyed but R3 I struggled so bad! Now don't know wether to move up to W3 tomorrow or redo W2?

Evilstepmum01 · 05/03/2017 22:33

Welcome Bazing! I did W1 twice too! Just do what you feel comfortable with, if that means redoing W2 til you feel happy, then do it! Grin

BazingaBaby · 06/03/2017 12:12

Thanks Evil. I decided to Girl Up and do W3 Shock I managed the first 90secs but died after 2mins of the first 3min run. Stopped for a 30sec breather then carried on but have to admit to having a sit down break halfway through the podcast Blush I did manage the whole of the last 3min run without stopping though but feel like I failed on the whole 😭 Anyone else feel like they're just not made for running?? Am having a bad day and trying to keep up some enthusiasm, you all sound so capable! Xx

GottaGetThisDone · 06/03/2017 20:57

Hello......hope nobody minds if i join this thread.
I am on W3 and did R1 today, so pleased with myself as seriously overweight (also doing Slimming world so totally on board with improving health and weight) but I have managed to do each round ok so far.
I am using the One You couch to 5K app, but cannot get it to work with music on my iPhone - are there any other apps that lets you put your own music to it?

sycamore54321 · 06/03/2017 23:19

Bazinga - it sounds to me like you are running too fast. Even if you feel you are slow, I'd suggest you go determinedly slower the next time. That may in fact be barely above walking pace, depending on your fitness level, but even at a reduced pace, the very act of running, lifting both feet off the ground at once, challenges your fitness and raises heart rate. The goal of C25K is endurance, not speed, so choose a pace that means you can finish each run.

No embarrassment that yiu might not be as fast as you would like to think, or that others are quicker than you, or that you aren't a "real" runner. You are and by getting out there, you're doing great.

A good breathing technique for endurance pace is inhale through the nostrils, exhale through the mouth. This forces you to keep your speed manageable

If really struggling, revert to the final run of the previous week. But either way, stick with it!

sycamore54321 · 06/03/2017 23:21

I haven't used it myself but the 5k101.com app says you can use your own music with its iPhone app. It is a slightly more challenging programme than some as it does 8 weeks rather than 9, so the earlier weeks may be a little steeper.

123fushia · 06/03/2017 23:24

I did the couch 2 5k in November. I have a poster at home that says
"Slow Runners Make Fast Runners Look Good.....You're Welcome!"

jesstar · 07/03/2017 09:11

W9R2 done! One more to go ...

I'm also really slow, embarrassingly so ... but I don't mind, I'm not trying to win any races, just trying to get a bit healthier! Good luck all, something is better than nothing :)

Evilstepmum01 · 07/03/2017 10:58

Hey sycamore hows your foot doing? Hope you're managing to stay active?
Totally agree, pace yourself bazinga. I am a total plodder. Jo Whiley who is my podcast coach advises that if someone could see your head over a high fence, they shouldnt be able to tell if you're running or walking! Not a bobbity head challenge! I plod. I set a slow pace, manage my breathing (this is key) and plod on! Its still running (technically!)
GottaGet As for music and the app-I've given in! Am on android and tried music and app but the music just plays over the app so I cant hear it. So i run in silence and try not to jump in fright when Jo speaks

WhatIsWrongWithMePlease · 07/03/2017 11:31

Can I join please? I've just done week 5 run 1.

Looking through week 5 and on the 3rd run, it's 20 Min run with no walking?! Shock why such a big jump? Week 6 goes back to walk breaks again.

I find I don't get out of breath but one of my legs keeps going a bit numb and the arch of that foot hurts. So frustrating as I'm doing so well otherwise.

I only run on Mondays and Fridays as I do a HIIT class on Wednesdays.

RubyGoat · 07/03/2017 19:28

Just finished W1R3. In the gym again as I went straight after work & it was already starting to get dark. Still no migraines... woop woop! Well done to everyone making really great progress.

What I'm struggling with most, TBH, is actually finding time to fit runs in. I work f/t & DD is in reception year. DH has mobility issues. I think when it gets a bit lighter in the mornings I'll get up early to run, hopefully I'll be sleeping better by then too.

Zippyzulu · 08/03/2017 16:22

Well done everyone, so much progress on here! I do think the title couch to 5k was a little misleading as mine only built me up to running constantly for 30 minutes, which for several weeks was much less than 5k... I genuinely didn't think I would ever manage to complete 5k but I got there in the end with only a few tears and trauma! I've even been doing weekly parkruns and managed to complete in 30.45 last week so I am going to bow out now and start my 10K training- eek!
Good luck everyone- for those looking for an app you can play music through I can recommend zen labs. I prefer audio books on audible as they distract me more than music Smile

BazingaBaby · 08/03/2017 18:31

Popping back to say thank you so much all! Did W3 R2 today and slowed myself and managed it! Think I just needed permission to run slow if that makes sense. Am concentrating on my breathing and footfalls so I don't end up with shin splints again Wink

Well done all you keeping it up and thanks for being my inspiration to keep this up!

lolalament · 09/03/2017 00:12

I did week 2 run 1 today! It was hard; I have no idea how I managed to get through it.

I'm using the RunDouble app which you can use your own music with as well. I've somehow managed to set my phone up so that when I plug in my running headphones it starts automatically.
