New year C25K. Anyone care to join me?

CaptainBraandPants · 01/01/2017 08:44

So, new year, new me, etc, etc.
I've done C25K before, then a program up to 10k.
Although I found lots of it hard, it did wonders for my health and fitness and also for my mental health.
But, then I stopped. I can't even remember why now.
So, I'm back at the beginning. The advantage I have this time is that I know I can do it as I've done it before.
It's pissing it down here, but I'm going to go and do it anyway. Grin
Anyone else?

Great news, and welcome Tsoto!

Glad your injury has healed bijou ... I thought about taking my running stuff with me but I'll mostly be jetlagged and working so won't get time to run (also I don't like running in places that I don't know very well, I'm a wimp).

waiting4inspiration · 30/01/2017 20:28

W5R1 done here too. Ended out going at short notice just after mid-day as family emergency meant I otherwise wouldn't have got out at all. Managed it, but it was tougher than I thought it should be. Next run Wednesday.

anonymousbird · 31/01/2017 16:59

Well done waiting.

W5R1 done here today too!

I am on a bit of a roll, may see if legs can move along to the next one tomorrow...

ChickenPoop · 31/01/2017 17:48

W5R3 done. I actually did 22 minutes Blush

It was alright. I had a slump at 7 minutes and a slump at 17ish minutes but ended up running extra. On to week 6.

I had a look at the zenlabs couch to 10k app earlier, as you can jump in at week 10. It looks terrifying! 1 minute recovery walks between loooong runs.

bijouxxx · 31/01/2017 18:51

Well done Chicken! I didn't get the chance to run today but will definitely start again on Thursday.

Evilstepmum01 · 31/01/2017 23:35

everyone seems to be doing well, thats great! well done Tsoto, the first run is the hardest! And those on week 5-yikes! how long are the runs you're doing?
W2R1 completed tonight, slightly longer runs but all good, managed and did a cheeky wee extra at the end! Did boxercise & metafit last night, run tonight, then tomorrow off, insanity thurs, run friday, sat off and 3rd run sunday.
Fair to say my legs are tired!
I'm using the BBC app and have Jo Whiley as my trainer. I really liked what she said on this run...she said instead of thinking 'oh no i hate running, turn it around, change your mindset, think 'I love running' and repeat it in your head as you go.
So I did and it works! Except I was running past the swimming pool at the time and of course am now singing 'I love running' to the tune of Dory's 'just keep swimming'! Oh dear! Grin

waiting4inspiration · 01/02/2017 00:57

Oh Chicken - well done you!!! So reassuring to know it can be done - although seriously doubting whether I can .... . It will be W5R2 for me tomorrow and I have absolutely no enthusiasm for it; feeling slightly off colour today - can't put my finger on it but the rest of the family have been lurgified for weeks and I've been doing more than my fair share of wiping the snotty noses of my dgcs and sneezed on (bless their little cotton socks).

Evilstepmum - I feel tired just reading about all the exercise you do.

KickAssAngel · 01/02/2017 02:34

I'm still on Week 3.

I just get so tired from work that I have no energy to run in the eve. I managed one run at the weekend, and just did kickboxing this eve.

I'm finding that I have more breath for the kickboxing, but still find running makes my legs ache. I have osteo arthritis in my hips & knees, and I just get sore and achy. BUT I have mid-winter break soon, and no kickboxing for a week, so I'll focus on getting some running done.

I remember last time I did c25k that around week 5 I struggled, and then it got quite easy, so I'm hoping to push on through to that stage when I have a week off work.

jesstar · 01/02/2017 08:36

Chicken look at you go! Well impressed!

I managed to drag myself out of bed this morning for W5R2, although I have a bit of a cold and had a bad night (feeling sorry for myself), but thought I really should try anyway given that next week will be broken up a bit.

The first 8 minute run was ok, but I struggled with the second towards the end. Don't know how I will manage 20 mins for R3, but will give it a go may be on Friday or Saturday.

Great to hear all of your progress, I'm impressed with the other exercise you're getting in, I'm not doing anything apart from C25K so am feeling a bit lazy compared to the rest of you!

I wonder what Captain's been up to?

ChickenPoop · 01/02/2017 10:09

Jess you'll be grand. I recommend slowing down and a having good playlist. I get really angry if a terrible or slow song comes on mid run. I need to invest in some headphones with a skip button...

I'm not doing any other exercise either.

I'm toying with the idea of running later but the air is looking dusty outside and I don't want black lung... we shall see.

anonymousbird · 01/02/2017 12:10

It's POURING here, I can't quite bring myself! Willing the rain to stop.

W5D2 beckons.....

waiting4inspiration · 01/02/2017 16:25

W5R2 done here. The second 8 minutes were not easy - the learner drivers were out in force on the housing estate today and every time I needed to cross a road there they were; hesitating, stalling, backing up the other learner drivers, and the delivery drivers. Am ridiculously anxious about the next run.

Anonymousbird I feel your pain about the weather. I don't mind so much if it starts to rain whilst I'm mid-run, but it's horrible starting out in it.

ChickenPoop · 01/02/2017 18:37

waiting well done.

I went out for W6R1 as I won't be able to run tomorrow. I was too fast - was hanging by thread and about 2 seconds from surrender when she said cool down! There was less running than yesterday but it felt harder. I've said it before that week 6 is a bastard and I'll say it again "week 6 is a bastard". Buoyed by the fact that you can run 20 minutes week 6 comes to taunt you with it's shorter durations and walking breaks. It's bizarre.

Those dreading and fearing the 20 minute beast - don't. Just slow down. It's really important for your self esteem that you finish that run if you can. You will probably have a moment around 7 or 8 minutes in where you'll feel like stopping. Push past that 30 seconds of doubt and you should find that you can continue.

Good luck!

jesstar · 02/02/2017 07:42

Thanks Chicken, am inspired by your running! Well done to everyone, I'm at the same stage as you waiting and not looking forward to tomorrow - but we if do it, it will feel great.

halfgirlhalfturnip · 02/02/2017 09:11

Good advice chicken
I'm in the Middle East this week but have brought my stuff and did W5R1 today - was actually okay despite having a really sore mouth following root canal on Monday.

ChickenPoop · 02/02/2017 10:33

Oooh turnip snap, I am also in the Middle East. We are having some rare grim weather in my neck of the woods. Last night the ChickenCats got rained on and were most unimpressed.

I think I have about a month before I'll be boiling. I run outside year round and June to September is diabolical. I always manage to get lazy and unmotivated during the cool months and regret it come the summer, which is why I am where I am now. In September/October I was running 30 mins plus...

Hope your mouth feels better soon!

anonymousbird · 02/02/2017 11:11

W5D2 done, but I ran more than the minutes in the app as I know I will have at least a two day break now, so decided to just ramp it up a bit.

Ran 25 minutes in total Shock out of 36 minutes. Am so inspired by everyone on this thread and my two friends (one of whom is over 50) running a 10k this Sunday.

So muddy though, dog needed a full on shower (not amused) in the garden when we got back... Grin.

I can't imagine running in that kind of heat. When i started this last summer (before the six month break.....!) I was running in around 80 degrees a few times and god I found that hard, can't imagine Middle East full on heat blast.

Tsotofamily · 02/02/2017 12:00

W1R2 done and it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be.
Well done for everyone so far specially those in the heat x

ChickenPoop · 02/02/2017 12:40

It's not hot yet. In fact it's positively cold! Tomorrow we have a high of 14c low of 5c Shock

The heat isn't actually a problem as long as you're hydrated but there are about six weeks of humidity where the air is so thick and wet it's hard to breathe properly. I always run at night but come summer it's still 30 degrees at 9pm so you just have give in and go Angry. I don't have the patience to queue for a treadmill at the gym (and I lack the required coordination).

I'd rather be hot than cold though. I despise the cold.

isambardo · 02/02/2017 16:38

Hello all, so glad to find this thread! I've just done W2r2 this morning (in a gale!) and I'm surprised how much I'm enjoying it.

I used to exercise quite a lot but since having children have done sod all.

jesstar · 03/02/2017 08:17

Hi isambardo, nice to have more company here.

Am disappointed that my cold got a lot worse and felt too rubbish to go out for a run this morning. Think I'll have a few days off and pick it up again when better. Hope the rest of you are doing better than I am!

Evilstepmum01 · 03/02/2017 23:40

W2R2 done! Blowing a hoolie out there but managed really well!
Hi isambardo, I'm enjoying the challenge too!

Hope your cold gets better jessstar, theres a bad bug going round just now.

waiting4inspiration · 04/02/2017 00:35

W5R3 done. Phew. And it was actually okay, although I ran (I use the term loosely) with my DD and we kept up a 20 minute whinge about our other halves so the time went quickly!! The rain never let up but we managed to avoid the worst of the wind by running between apartment blocks.

Well done Evilstepmum and Isambardo. It's really encouraging to have running friends.

Jesstar - I hope you're soon feeling better.

Am taking a couple of days running rest, so W6 will start Monday for me.

ChickenPoop · 04/02/2017 17:26

Well done waiting & to the newcomers.

Just back from W6R2 and it was horrendous. Two 10 min runs with a three minute walk between. I made it but I literally just scraped over the finish line, huffing like a beast and with a giant stitch. I hate week 6, it makes me doubt myself. I'll do run 3 tomorrow to get it out of the way.

Good luck to everyone else (don't be put off by my grinching).

waiting4inspiration · 04/02/2017 18:59

You're doing great Chicken. I'm having two days break from running so won't tackle W6 until Monday. I do wonder if, when the run is going well, the walking breaks sabotage the next run by allowing the leg muscles to cool down just a little bit too much - the breath may recover, but the legs suffer for it and the rhythm is lost. Hope you have a better run tomorrow.
