Hi

Has anyone recently started or just about to start? Would be great to have somewhere to check in and cheer each other on.

I've started very slowly and am about to embark on week 3. I'm spending 2 weeks on each week if that makes sense!

Look forward to anyone else joining in.

I started about 4 wks ago but went a holiday for a week which didn't help. Wk3 R3 just finished tonight. Breathing is improving as my asthma had been playing up with it but my knees and calves still aching.

cathyandclare · 25/08/2016 22:17

28 mins for 5k Miranda Shock

Mirandawest · 25/08/2016 22:40

That was a while ago when my legs went faster. Now they seem to have mostly given up.

NeedACostaDetox · 26/08/2016 06:14

Hi all

OP with a shiny new name.

I've had a very long and tiring week so haven't made it out. Today is my day 'off' yet I'm up at 6am roasting a chicken so we'll have something for tea! Will get out tomorrow morning when DH is around. Not been out since Sunday so will be doing my 2nd run of week 3.

Have a good day all.

EmpressKnowsWhereHerTowelIs · 26/08/2016 07:50

Great name, Miranda.

I have a 1.5 mile stretch on the way to work that will hopefully end up as my daily run.

Mirandawest · 26/08/2016 14:46

Did run 2 of week 4 this morning which was OK. Not exactly enjoying it but am plodding along

CrotchetQuaverMinim · 26/08/2016 15:52

I'm trying it yet again (millionth time, because of all the injury). I'm still getting shin problems and really tight/cramp calves, but I'm taking it much more slowly than you're supposed to, just increasing it really gradually, so I have actually made it to week 4, without unbearable pain at least.

I started using a couch25k app, but it moved too fast after week 2, so I've now downloaded an interval trainer, and have used the weeks from couch to 5k as a guide, and made about 10 steps in between each week, to get me from one to the next. It took 12 steps to get from week 3 to 4, and I'm just starting on the ones I've done for week 4. I made 10 steps but I am sure I will have to repeat some of them, as I just can't seem to build up the stamina. Each time increases one of the runs by 15-30 sec, or reduces one of the walks. Even after about 4 months of this, I still find 3 or 4 minutes a real struggle when it gets to the second or third time. I know I'm unfit, but I really thought I'd be improving a little faster!

I also downloaded map my run, and found that my 30 min walk/jog is only about 3km, so I'm going to have to increase that quite a bit as the jog part increases if it's going to get to 5k in the end. At the moment the thought of increasing it to 6 or 7 minutes, which is what I have to do as part of this lot of workouts, is daunting.

I like having all the apps, though, telling me where I am every 30 sec or whatever, seems to make the time go faster, and I can push on for that extra bit. The first app would only tell me every minute, and that wasn't enough, but I think I've set Map my Run to tell me every 30 seconds, which might help. It's towards the end of each minute that I start to lose motivation.

EmpressKnowsWhereHerTowelIs · 28/08/2016 10:07

Just done run 1 of week 2. It was tough, but no tougher than run 1 of week 1 was so that feels hopeful. Good luck, Crotchet.

NeedACostaDetox · 28/08/2016 15:26

Hi all, I made it out yesterday and hoping to go tomorrow afternoon.

Try not to get disheartened Crochet - I can't imagine running for 6 minutes either but I'm not dying doing 3 minutes so I'm taking that as a win and see how I get on.

IamnotaStepfordHousewife · 28/08/2016 21:34

Run 1 of wk4 - 3 min run 2 min walk, the 2 x 4 min run 3 min walk and then 3 min run again. I'm knackered but managed to do it. Seems to be speeding up quickly over the next lot of runs so not sure how that will go!

CrotchetQuaverMinim · 28/08/2016 21:48

that's harder than my week 4! In my app, the first day is running intervals of 3, 4, and 5 min, can't remember how long the walks are in between. I'm doing it reversed, as I find it easier to start with the longer run.

It will take me at least a month or more to get to week 5 with my more gradual program, and I expect I'll have to repeat days in there, too. Both for stamina, as I still find it is really hard by the third run interval, and also because the shin pain is coming back again, even though I thought I was going so slowly this time!

And my attempts to get MapMyRun to tell me every 30sec didn't work, but maybe because I forgot to put the volume back on (I normally have it mute). It did tell me to 'start workout', though, so that shouldn't have been the problem. Could be that it just doesn't like my phone, as it says it has a lot of issues with older iPhones. So I'm back to the app that just tells me every minute. I could really use that 30sec countdown sometimes though!

NeedACostaDetox · 29/08/2016 16:24

Well done everyone. I'm following the NHS one loosely. Going out for a week 3 run and will see if I can do a week 4 over the next weekend when there's a bit more time and hopefully energy.

Mirandawest · 31/08/2016 10:57

Did week 5 run 2 today which means the next one is the 20 minute run. May put it off a little bit (DH and I went out at the same time today but he did 5k)

NeedACostaDetox · 31/08/2016 12:43

That does sound scary Miranda!

BasinHaircut · 31/08/2016 16:42

Doing week 2 run 3 tonight! Can't imagine a 20 min run just yet!

I'm just well impressed with myself that I've kept it up for 2 weeks.

Anasnake · 31/08/2016 17:18

Done run 1 of week 2 but don't like the app - what does everyone use ? This is the one I've got but it's American and I'm not keen .

I use a really old podcast on my iPod nano - been using the same one for the 8 or so years I've been coming back to couch to 5k. Not sure whether it exists any more

EmpressKnowsWhereHerTowelIs · 31/08/2016 17:49

I have the app on silent, phone in hand & just keep an eye on it. Probably not ideal but it works ok.

Anasnake · 31/08/2016 21:49

App randomly tells me I'm 'awesome' and 'way to go' and it's getting on my tits !!

ScarlettDarling · 31/08/2016 22:22

Hi, I'm new to this thread. I started on Tues and did week 1 run 2 today. I found it hard but managed! Grin I've never done any proper exercise before do am quite proud of myself for having a go!

I'm usin the Nhs podcasts...a bit boring but ok. Where does everyone keep their phone when they're running?! It's too hot to wear a jacket so I've just had leggings and t shirt on and have carried my phone in my hand, but it's a bit of a pain. Any suggestions?

BasinHaircut · 31/08/2016 23:44

ana I think mine is a BBC one. You get a choice of voices, mine is Sarah Millican.

scarlett I've got a thingy that straps phone to my upper arm. Think DH just bought it off amazon.

Mirandawest · 01/09/2016 16:24

I ran for 20 minutes and I didn't collapse in a heap on the floor 😄 And day 1 of week 6 has some walking in it, so should be able to manage that.

BasinHaircut · 01/09/2016 16:32

Well done!

CrotchetQuaverMinim · 01/09/2016 17:27

wow!!

20 min sounds amazing to me. It's going to take me another year or so to get there I expect....

I've now done a day that had two 5 min intervals in it, but lots of walking as well. I think that seems to be what I need, lots of little breaks. I don't have the stamina to do longer intervals. The pain is also coming back a lot in my shins.

I use a mix of apps; 5K is the one I got the basic program from, and then an interval trainer to make all my workouts that take me from one week to the next, via about a dozen gradually increasing workouts. I also use the map my run app, to see where I have been and how far.

I am wearing a jacket, even though it is SO hot, so that I can put my phone in the pocket, and also so that it covers up my middle a bit more; the t-shirt shows rolls of fat all too obviously.

Mirandawest · 01/09/2016 18:12

I should get an armband for my nano - held off until I knew I was likely to stick at this for a while.
