Hi

Has anyone recently started or just about to start? Would be great to have somewhere to check in and cheer each other on.

I've started very slowly and am about to embark on week 3. I'm spending 2 weeks on each week if that makes sense!

Look forward to anyone else joining in.

Your doing really well shortaris.

I tried a 5-10k app but to be honest Ive found it easier to add 0.5k a week to my run and listen to my body. I do use Strava free app though and that tracks my runs gives me stats on my performance and cuts in every 0.5k to tell me pace & time. I play my own music as well, with strava in the background. It works for me. I managed 8.5k on Monday despite setting out to do 7.5k but I felt in the "zone" I started C25k in sept Smile and I've had at least a month off due to bugs in that time. My goal is 10k by mid March and I know now I can do that but I'm just being cautious as I don't want an injury like my DH who ran too far tooo fast and can't run now Smile

shortaris1 · 10/02/2017 21:12

Thanks so much for your tips and encouragement! It really helps. I'll try Zenlabs and see how I go.
I play my own music too. Running Trax and Pump it Up are faves for me!
Another 25 mins on Wednesday. Knee is highly but not sore. Lots of stretches and foam rollering going on.

Really looking forward to my run tomorrow. What's happened to me?

shortaris1 · 10/02/2017 21:13

Niggly even!

Biking007 · 10/02/2017 21:24

You have got the bug! Grin I smiled as I thought oh I'll just squeeze in a 5k early this morning, it was great and only after the run did I reflect that a couple of months ago I couldn't even have contemplated that!
Ooh I was told to foam roller but I'm not sure what to do on it? I tried the slow hip /side leg one but it flipping hurt!

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 10/02/2017 21:59
Grin I use MapMyRun which sounds as if it's similar to Strava, it tells me how I'm doing every k, analyses my runs and keeps a record of them, all of which is really helpful.

It is addictive! It's also something I never imagined I could do so I'm bloody proud of my body for doing it.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 12/02/2017 11:41

Shortaris, can you tell me more about foam rollers?

shortaris1 · 12/02/2017 16:25

I got mine in sports direct Empress its got bits sticking out and I looked up what to do on You Tube. Joe Wickes, The Body Coach has a video on it and there are a few others.

Had a rotten run yesterday. I was sore from leg day the day before and frozen. My phone battery died 2 minutes in so I couldn't see how long I'd been going and I hated running without music. Few lessons learned there!

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 12/02/2017 17:17

Thanks, I'll have a look.

I hate running without my phone too! I did just over 3k today but kept getting distracted by primroses & snowdrops & so on Grin. Then it started raining so I decided that for today, enough was enough.

ScarlettDarling · 12/02/2017 17:55

First run today in two and a half weeks, since I fell over and broke myself! Was soooo bad, managed 3.3 km with a couple of short walks interspersed, then couldn't bear any more. It was sleety, windy and freezing. My ears were frozen and I couldn't stand anymore! Probably won't get out again until wed now as I've got two long days at work coming up. Hope I do better then. Bit gutted as I'd been managing just over 5km until I fell over Sad

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 12/02/2017 18:21

It took me a couple of weeks to get back into it after my knee problems, Scarlett. You did it though, so you know you can do it again!

ScarlettDarling · 12/02/2017 19:03

Thanks empress I'm going to try for at least 4km on wed and hopefully build it back up to 5k after a couple of weeks. The freezing sleety stuff really didn't help spur me on today either!

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 12/02/2017 19:30

I know what you mean, it put me right off too!

Sounds like a plan.

elsie07 · 12/02/2017 19:44

Hello thread. I've about 6 weeks in and really enjoying it. Wondered if anyone else had experienced 'hot knees'. They're not painful but I've been reading it might be a sign of inflammation. I've been looking at strengthening exercises and I already do pilates so I'm hoping I can combat it. Knee injury is what has always put me off running before and I'll be sad if I have to give it up because of that. Any tips anyone has?

Biking007 · 12/02/2017 21:36

Well done scarlett I had 3-4wks out sick when I'd just hit the 5k mark, take it easy and after couple weeks you'd be back there again. You know you can do it.

elsie welcome, I've not had hot knees so no real advice except listen to your body, maybe slow down? my DH used to Ice his knees with frozen peas after his runs, he kept pushing on and then injured himself and can't run for months. Gd luck.

shortaris1 · 12/02/2017 21:51

Hi Elsie I start week 8 tomorrow so nearly at the same stage. One of my knees can be a bit annoying but I'm working on strengthening it and rest it when I need to. I've also done a bit of yoga to seesee if that helps.

roughtobuff · 12/02/2017 23:29

How do you all measure your time and distances? I have a phone but no idea how to transport it, it would annoy me bouncing around in my pocket!

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 13/02/2017 05:41

Hi Elsie. I don't know about hot knees specifically, but what fixed knee pain for me was a combination of strengthening exercises and going to a specialist running shop for advice on the best trainers to get.

Rough, I have a bumbag for my phone, or you can also get pouches that strap round your arm. I use an app called MapMyRun that gives me my time & distance after each km.

Biking007 · 13/02/2017 15:35

Like empress I bought a cheap running bum bag in sports direct to carry my phone but whilst it's been cold I got myself a £18 running jacket in SD a couple of weeks ago and it's been brill very comfy and my phone fits snugly in the pocket with no bouncing. I actually prefer it to the bum bag.
rough I use free Strava app it's same type of app as map my run gives me updates every 0.5k, shows me graphs afterwards and average speed and lets me play my own music/podcast at the same time just cuts in when giving an update.

shortaris1 · 13/02/2017 22:17

Elsie I've just been using the couch to 5k app but am going to try Strava as I can't get my speed on there. Probably just as well!

I have a flat belt type thing for your phone but like biking bought a cheap jacket for the cold and the phone goes in the pocket.

Got two smiles from boy runners tonight, wooly hat and Primark shiny jacket must have something going for them Grin

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 14/02/2017 09:02

Grin I've got a light running hoodie with convenient pockets. It just always ends up round my waist.

Shortaris, I've just been trying out a foam roller in my gym. I can see why you like them, I need to do that more often!

Biking007 · 14/02/2017 14:01

I tried the foam roller after my run but it really hurt! Painful but actually whilst I think about it those muscles aren't too sore today so maybe it did help Hmm hoping I can run tonight whilst waiting for DD to finish her dance rehearsal but weather been awful today so it's not very appealing a dark wet run but I will do a 5k just to loosen the legs. Had an email saying my new trainers are due to be delivered today so fingers crossed Smile I can try them out.

Biking007 · 14/02/2017 14:02

I mainly rolled my hip and side thigh but I need to find out how I can use it to loosen my calves.

elsie07 · 14/02/2017 21:57

Thanks for all your advice. I've been trying strengthening exercises. My aches seem to have been worse after the last run where I wore a new springy pair of trainers and I'm wondering whether that's my problem. There's too much cushioning for me to feel the impact. It's what all those bare-foot running types say.

I bought a cheap version of the Flipbelt on Amazon and it's been brilliant for putting my phone in. I bought it so that it fits my hips and it doesn't move. I tried one around my waist but it was so annoying.

Biking007 · 14/02/2017 22:13

Dragged my weary self out for 5k tonight but just wasn't in the zone pretty much walked after 4K still it was better than nothing. Arrh half term with the kids is really tiring!

SkiBike007 · 15/02/2017 10:56

New trainers have arrivedGrin bit bright! But can't run till Friday now I think (changed my user name)
