Gather here parkrunners old and new. Tell us all about your running, volunteering, juniors, tourism, Cake and cows.

Old thread here for anyone interested.

We are probably the best thread on MN. All are welcome here whether you are brand new to parkrun or sporting your 500 shirt.

Hi everyone, did my first ever parkrun today- coming in nearly last at 45 minutes but hopefully I can only improve and get better! I'm fairly new to running- have been running twice a week for the last few weeks- is there anything you would all suggest to improve my time? Although I felt a bit rubbish being so slow it was a great experience and a really supportive atmosphere so hopefully I'll be back next week!

sailinggirl1780 · 07/01/2017 13:23

Pinkheels well done on your first park run Smile when I started running I found that using an app like strava or Fitbit helps me look at my slower bits and I picked one aim to work on each time I went. Strava breaks down the parkruns into segments so you can pick a segment and try to achieve a pb on just that bit. Only a few weeks in and already doing a 5k is fantastic! Well done and keep going.
Sorry if what I've said is old news to you!! I had never heard of any apps until someone suggested it to me! Smile

sailinggirl1780 · 07/01/2017 13:24

Posttruthera I meant to say, well done, hope you enjoyed it this morning.

PostTruthEra · 07/01/2017 15:24

I did my run this morning and loved it! My age grading was 25% lower than before baby and I came last in my age group, but I had such a good time. I quite like drizzle for running in! A new park run near me opened up last year, but I was too unwell in pregnancy to do anything, so it was my first time on this course (and god the Lancaster park run is hilly!). The volunteers were all amazing and enthusiastic! Thanks, anyone who volunteers at these events!

I wish I could start running more often, but it's so dark out before and after DH goes to work.

Pink heels well done on your first run!

Thanks for the well wishes. I hope everyone else had a nice run!

jobsfcuked · 07/01/2017 15:42

757 running our park run today. What a fantastic thing park run is 😊

randomsabreuse · 07/01/2017 17:23

Well done pinkheels and posttruth!

2nd park run for me today. Narrow muddy trail course (buggies banned and I could see why!) Pleasantly surprised by my time as I walked up a few of the hills so only 4 minutes slower than my flat course time! Had enough left for a sprint finish at the end (downhill). Must add hills to regular runs!

randomsabreuse · 07/01/2017 17:32

Posted too soon - about 8th from last in just over 34 minutes - damp muddy hilly trails probably doesn't appeal to sensible people. Think there were about 60 there!

feetheart · 07/01/2017 17:39

Well done everyone - parkrun is an amazing thing indeed :-)

Not a record attendance for us today but the third biggest turnout (263) with over 30 first timers. I got to run again but picked up a struggling under-11 runner who had been abandoned by his dad so was slower than I had hoped. Had words with dad at the end as it isn't the first time it's happened (or the first time I have spoken to him about it) and said that if it happened again all 3 results would be removed. Found out later that he had abandoned both his under-11s and run his own PB so will definitely remove results next time Angry

Pinkheels · 07/01/2017 18:44

Thanks all- have downloaded strava and look forward to using it the next time I attempt a run, hopefully Monday, is it sad that I'm already looking forward to it?! Feet that's so cheeky of the Dad!

MyBlackCat · 07/01/2017 18:49

Made it to parkrun despite a rough night with LO and was rewarded with another pbpb - 45s quicker than last week Grin sub 29 is the next goal!

Well done to all runners especially the first timers today.

SocksRock · 07/01/2017 18:58

I did my first parkrun today. I haven't run 5km since 2011. Since then I've had a baby, eaten the contents of the house (twice) and feel like crap about myself. I managed the Oxford parkrun in 40min40, which I was really proud of. My 9yo ran with her aunt, she managed 33:36 for her first 5km, which is awesome, I'm so proud of her!

cinnamongreyhound · 08/01/2017 21:41

Well done pinkheels, get out more often if you can and either some interval training or doing a longer run at another time during the week should improve your time.

Well done socksrock! The first is the hardest!

Sooooo frustrating feetheart!

Well done PostTruthEra! I run in the dark all winter it sucks but it keeps me running! As for volunteers anyone can volunteer, some rotate running and volunteering or volunteer when they have another event on the Sunday etc. If you opt in to the volunteer email you should hear when your event needs help and can get involved in that way too.

We were the same miked99 but why not? If that's what gets people bitten by the parkrun bug! And we have no talk like that on this thread we're all or there doing what we can and we're all doing better than sitting at home, no one is hopeless!

chutneypig · 09/01/2017 01:34

Great to see so many people out for their first parkrun, welcome to you all!

No run for me this weekend or next as I'm travelling - sigh. My wretched family only went off and tried a new course without me at the weekend, most uncalled for. But my volunteer top arrived before I left Smile

That's very annoying feet. I've seen a few people picked up on similar recently, why they think the rules don't apply to them I don't know. I'm not saying we're not all counting the days till the twins are 11 but the rules are there and they know they need to abide by them. If they can grasp it at their age why the adults can't is beyond me. So rude to the RD and volunteers.

PurplePidjin · 09/01/2017 15:32

Hello all, I fell off for a bit. Started c25k 5 weeks ago, ds1 insisted on being my running buddy and we did a steady 45:44 on Saturday. He loves having his own barcode and is looking forward to getting his 10 tee shirt. He also thinks Poppy Troll lives under the bridge en route so I'm wondering about asking a Marshall to plant a toy there for him to find one day 😂

cinnamongreyhound · 09/01/2017 20:40

Sounds like a family divorce is on the cards Chutneypig, how could they!!!!!!!

needyounow · 10/01/2017 21:20

Hey all, have caught up on the thread, things been pretty hectic so hadn't been on for weeks.
Hi to all the first timers.
Well done to everyone for all your double runs over a Christmas.
We had a new record for amount of people running on Sat, it was crazy seeing so many people. Nearly double of what we had o the NYD run.
I finally managed to persuade my best friend to join me at parkrun and she enjoyed it too. She was dreading it as hadn't ran properly for months but she made it all way round without stoping. Think I was more excited than her that she done it!

MelanieCheeks · 12/01/2017 07:31

Just ordered my aubergine volunteer shirt!

feetheart · 12/01/2017 17:07

Nice one Melanie :)

Trying to plan visits to the parents over the next 6-9 months and seeing how many Norn Irn parkruns I/we can get in. Their closest ones are Comber and Bangor but I want to do Stormont first.
DH recently realised that I may be able to get to 50 by my birthday, which is a Saturday. 50 at 55 has a nice ring to it. Local people please pencil in 19th August for a little tourism :D

needyounow - our numbers have been bonkers over the last few weeks - a record high of 275 on Christmas Eve, a record low of 97 at 9am on NYD and our third highest at 263 on Saturday with 31 newcomers. Let's see what the next few weeks bring.

Lifeisabeach · 12/01/2017 18:34

Well done Melanie!

I forgot to update after last Saturday. DD didn't fancy it so I had to run on my own, which meant trying for a PB. I failed by about 20 seconds but it was very muddy so not too bad I suppose.

I'm hoping she'll run with me this week as she's done 46 parkruns and it would be nice to her to get to 50 like her brother, but the forecast looks freezing and she isn't too keen on the cold!

MyBlackCat · 12/01/2017 20:40

Well done Melanie Smile

It's my parkruns 2nd birthday this Saturday, we are having a pyjama party, think it will need to be cosy pj's with this weather Shock

cinnamongreyhound · 13/01/2017 14:52

Looks like a chilly one here tomorrow, wish I could make it Sad

chutneypig · 13/01/2017 17:32

Missing it too, cinnamon, I'll be in the air. Hope you manage to get some time to run this weekend.

Thermals I think MyBlackCat!

Hope you can get DD out life

FiftyNineOhEight · 13/01/2017 18:31

I am running tomorrow and looking forward to a birthday celebration (not mine!) and visitors SmileCakeBrew

Hot and humid in Sydney this morning which made for an uncomfortable run (but I wouldn't want to swap with those of you in Britain right now) and I think we had another record turn out.
It was great to see so many children taking part too, I think we get over 20 under 11s each week and I think I was only beaten by about half of them !

Hope everyone has a good run this weekend

Honeyandfizz · 14/01/2017 07:11

Miked99 I am just checking my local run to see if it is still on as we have had more snow over night. Its blooming freezing over here, yet my theory is if I didnt run in the dark or the rain I wouldnt run for the whole of winter in the UK!
