I'm going to do my first Parkrun tomorrow. I must admit, I'm nervous. Any tips?

MelanieCheeks · 03/06/2016 21:11

You'll be fine-you're joining a club of over a million people!

You will be made to feel welcome-go and say hi to any of the volunteers or the run director, part of their role is to look after first timers.

Don't worry about your speed or pace or technique-take it easy and enjoy it.

megletthesecond · 03/06/2016 23:28

0ellen don't forget your bar code. Although you don't need it until you finish.

Just go round at your pace and get the feel for it.

FuzzyWhiteLegs · 03/06/2016 23:36

0ellenbrody0 I've decided tomorrow is to be my first time too. Am scared & excited!

feetheart · 03/06/2016 23:41

Lovely to see lots of new people :)

Paul S-H ran at our parkrun last week . . . I ran at Fritton Lake Sad

I'm RD tomorrow and will be trying not to burst with pride as DS (10), his mate (9) and his mate's mum do their 50th. I've bought them matching t-shirts to run in :o
Halle are you coming over with the other posse who are running their 50ths?
At the moment we have 6 people, that I know of, running their 50th with us tomorrow, and a Junior running their 10th. There will be LOTS of cake, some of which I need to finish making! CakeCakeCakeCake

feetheart · 03/06/2016 23:43

Scared & excited is good as long as the latter outweighs the former!
Enjoy your first runs FuzzyWhiteLegs and 0ellenbrody0 and come back and tell us all about it :)

standingonlego · 03/06/2016 23:47

Sorry to be missing park run tomorrow but have race for life pretty muddy starting at 10am abd it is all a bit too tight time wise!!!

standingonlego · 03/06/2016 23:48

Welcome to the parkrun family fuzzy and oellen!Grin

chutneypig · 04/06/2016 06:17

Hope you both have a great time today Oellen and Fuzzy I felt a bit nervous first time but everyone's so welcoming and that's true of every parkrun I've been too.

Exciting day feet, no wonder you're proud of DS.

Hope the pretty muddy goes well standing. I've signed up for one next month but went for a later slot in case I felt like parkrun first. I'm sure I won't after, rubbish with obstacles! Race for Life 10k for us tomorrow.

GeoffreysGoat · 04/06/2016 11:28

How'd everyone do?

lastqueenofscotland · 04/06/2016 11:32

How did the first timers go?

Braved a hilly one today and just took it at hm pace as I've got a hill half in 3 weeks and it went well

MelanieCheeks · 04/06/2016 11:45

Fabulous cake at Ecos today for their 200th. It was a bit too warm for Minnie, so I dialled back our pace a bit. But glorious weather, and a huge turnout - waiting for the final stats but I wouldnt be surprised if it was a record turnout for them.

feetheart · 04/06/2016 13:15

245 for us, our second highest turnout and, for once everything ran smoothly and the results processed like a dream (famous last words :))
DS and his mate had a great time and even DH and DD came to sample the atmosphere. There was a LOT of cake too Cake

HalleLouja · 04/06/2016 13:29

The cake was lovely feet thanks for the welcome. Sorry if I looked dazed and confused when I got there. All ok by the end. Grin

GeoffreysGoat · 04/06/2016 13:41

I don't think ours does cake. I need to work out when ds hits a milestone (dh is in the 30s so a way off) and maybe start. I also really really want to set up a junior, lots of kids doing a lap with parents etc. So I'll do some more, learn the ropes, and see what I can do. It's at least a 45 minute drive to the nearest at the moment!

37:11 for ds1 today, new pb by 3 minutes😃

0ellenbrody0 · 04/06/2016 15:37

I did it!!!!
10 weeks ago I could not run for 30 seconds and today I did my first ever Parkrun in 35.48!
DD(12) did it in 32.08 which she was very chuffed with.

My aim is to decrease my time and increase my %. Can't go next week but am already looking forward to the week after.

standingonlego · 04/06/2016 15:57

Well done oellen that is a great time and what an achievement in 10 weeks. Fast for your DD too!

Pretty muddy was fun...but was not too muddy and obstacles were fine so I think your will enjoy it chutney. However our course was quite "undulating" 😃 We are doing the triple this year so have the 10k and 5k to do tomorrow....seemed like a good idea at the time HmmGrin

Congratulations and a big wave to all you other park running lovelies, jealous of anyone that got Cake

Blatherskite · 04/06/2016 16:01

I just couldn't get out of the door early enough to make it to you this morning feet, sorry Sad

Took DS to Buckingham instead and spent the entire run begging him to come back as I couldn't keep up! New PB for him at 30:09 and he'd have been well under 30 minutes if I hadn't been slowing him down. Massively frustrating for me as my PB is at that course as stands at 25:18. That seems near impossible right now Sad

He did say he had a lovely morning with it just being me and him though and we had waffles as a celebratory breakfast at the cafe at the finish.

ThursdayLastWeek · 04/06/2016 16:16

Hello all and welcome newbies!
Prepare to get addicted!

I took a minute off my time of the last two weeks and didn't feel totally like death at the end, so that's an improvement right?!

Mmmmmmm waffles

chutneypig · 04/06/2016 17:30

Very well done to you both 0ellen that's fantastic. That's pretty much where I started last year but it took me a lot longer than 10 weeks to get to that point.

Your DS is going great guns Geoffrey, fabulous stuff. It'd be great to see another juniors round your way, we'd definitely come when on holiday. I was amazed it took so long for Poole to start one up.

I know the feeling Blathers, DS sprinted off in a totally lowering way when we were in sight of the funnel and DH. It'll come in time Flowers

Definite improvement Thursday!

Ah the dreaded term undulating standing! Sounds good. Which is up first for you tomorrow? Luckily they've put 10k first as it's going to be hot here. It was early afternoon last year, going to cover the DC in sunscreen as it is.

Hilly one for us too lastqueen, took it easy because of the run tomorrow but we said we'd slow down and try and not stop - not managed it on the course yet. DD and I just about survived. DS did have to keep stopping for us to catch up, tomorrow's going to be a treat.

Jealous of all the cake! Glad DS had a good time feet. We had a course record - one of the other local runs wasn't on today and we even had a tourist from Brazil.

Glad Minnie didn't turn into a hot dog Melanie!

Blatherskite · 04/06/2016 17:45

Sorry, forgot to add "Welcome to the new runners". You're always welcome here and at parkrun.

Cutney he did exactly that! Sprinted off at the finish and left me for dead! He's NINE! Going to get DH to take him next weekend I think as it'll be his 10th and he should have a PB if he can do one. He should have done a lot more than 10 by now but I've been wary of letting him run so far so often at such a young age. He very much enjoys it though and I am slowing him down rather than pushing him so it's been weekly recently. He's been asked to be on the school's athletics team (surprise surprise) so he's wanted the training.

The waffles were amazing Thursday. We had them with bacon and maple syrup. I have a great photo of him grinning like a loon tucking into them :)

MyBlackCat · 04/06/2016 18:45

Well done everyone on your parkruns Smile I took 21 seconds off last weeks time however I did feel like death at the end. Went straight to do the food shop and it took all my concentration to stay upright and not throw up everywhere Shock

At least I ran - 3 more until the big 5-0 Grin

MelanieCheeks · 04/06/2016 19:00

Fabulous cake!

We still managed a PB. Last time I'd been at Ecos I was recovering from a broken ankle, and I didn't have Min with me. So even though I had the 25 minute pacer in my sights for the first half, we eased off a bit and left some gas in teh tank, and a bit of room for a better time next time we visit.

Great work all newcomers!

GeoffreysGoat · 04/06/2016 19:26

Good stuff 0ellen!

Blathers from the little bits I've seen you post, you did bloody well to get out there. Be kind to yourself x

FuzzyWhiteLegs · 04/06/2016 20:11

Thanks for all the good wishes folks, and well done 0ellen!

I had a great time! Was lucky to bump into someone I vaguely knew in the car park who saw me right before the start, then had a good run round for a finishing time of 34:48. Pretty near the back of the field, but I am well chuffed at averaging sub-7min/km over the distance, as I've never managed that before. Then I had a lovely coffee with a couple of other runners I met on the way round, so all in all a marvellous experience.

Then did a 5 mile walk in the afternoon so I'm knackered and starving! Off to find some [more] food...Grin
