Happy 2016 everyone!

If your new year's resolutions include more exercise, come and join our little band of (almost) daily exercisers. The idea is loosely based on Juneathon, and you do some form of exercise most days each week (we take rest days too). The exercise can be whatever you like, swimming, running, DVD/ gym classes, yoga, stretching, etc, but we post here to keep motivated and encourage each other.

Our previous threads are Octoberathon and Juneathon

I'm planning to get out for a short run later today, fingers crossed it stops raining at some point!

Right, comeagain, I've registered for one on 28th may, so you have to do yours or I won't do mine . There's a pop up race in March that looks like it might be doable too... I'll see how far I get at the weekend to see if it's anyway reasonable.

Awwwwwww man! Grin

SerendipityDooDah · 07/01/2016 08:34

Morning, all! Thanks to kanye's rivalry friendly encouragement I did indeed do a HIIT workout last night Grin. Today will likely be a rest day as I have a lunch meeting and then am traveling this evening.

Love all the 5k plans! Does anyone do parkrun? I'd love to give that a try. My tentative plan is to give myself this month to get back into running and then do parkrun in Feb. I had built up to 5k last fall but then stopped altogether and started eating for England Blush so feel a bit wobbly at the thought of trying parkrun just yet ...

velmadinkly · 07/01/2016 11:10

I don't think I'll be exercising today. I was going to walk, but it is still absolutely slinging it down here. I'll see later on tonight after I finish work. I will have done my cycling to and from work though.

KanyesVest · 07/01/2016 17:26

Cycling to and from work counts in my book, Velma! I decided today was going to be a rest day, but as it is finally not raining, I walked everywhere I could so have managed 6km, which I'm going to count! My brother is calling for dinner so I'm not sure I'll get to do my stretching video tonight.

Serendipity I've done a few park runs but I'm embarrassingly slow...I was last at the last one I did! Blush I just can't seem to get faster, and I don't like running enough to push myself through. As my dad always said, I'm built for comfort, not for speed. Hmm

Will try and catch up over the weekend .....

OublietteBravo · 07/01/2016 19:37

Evening everyone. I did NMTZ just now. I'm very much looking forward to a rest day on Saturday Grin

chutneypig · 07/01/2016 20:57

I go to parkrun a lot. I'm not fast but it's great fun. I'd definitely recommend it Serendipity.

I did some speed intervals on the treadmill yesterday and yoga tonight. I say speed, it might breech trade descriptions. More slow and some slower bits Grin

I'm off to discover what a 'bodybalance' class is today. I'm hoping its a yoga/Pilates inspired class and not a frantic cardio session as my legs have only just started working without protest after Tuesday/weds sessions. Thursdays I see my dmother who is disabled and take her out for the day so they're written off exercise wise.

Is the actual gym a very scary place?
I'm hyper aware of people and need to be focused/alone to concentrate. The classes I choose are in the small studio rather than the popular, larger studios which makes it easier. My gym has tv's attached to some machines with iPod docking stations (I don't own an iPod though), I have actually never been in a gym or used one, I've only ever done classes. I'm wondering if I can use the PT's to design a core/cardio plan for me and be brave enough to go in on days where I can't make classes.

SerendipityDooDah · 08/01/2016 11:20

Hello to all and congrats on more good days for everybody! Weekend catch-ups are fine, blody -- sometimes life gets in the way during the week, I find.

Glad to hear the parkrun reports. I feel pretty certain I'd be at the back of the pack just now, which doesn't worry me as much as not being able to finish at all! Will give it another couple of weeks.

Purple, I find the scariness of a gym really depends on how it is set up and the main clientele. I went to a swanky one in the city that was always crowded with very fit, very well-clad super achievers, and I was sometimes uncomfortable there. My favourite gyms have been smaller neighbourhood places with a range of ages/fitness levels. They seemed to encourage camaraderie and/or commiseration, and I found as I got to know people I felt more comfortable and looked forward to going. However, if people are a distraction or source of anxiety, you might actually prefer the anonymity of a larger place where people tend to plug in their headphones and tune out everyone else. No matter what, I find all gyms a little bit intimidating the first few times until you figure out what's where, but every place I've ever gone has had PTs who were delighted to help you make up a plan. There are also lots of online resources with explanations for how to set up a good routine using cardio machines (exercise.about.com is one of my favourites).

SerendipityDooDah · 08/01/2016 15:48

PS did a HIIT workout at lunch. Due for a run tomorrow, but we are supposed to have heavy rain all day ...

PurpleThermalsNowItsWinter · 08/01/2016 17:01

Thank you Serendipity. It is one of those 'super up their own bums' I'm afraid but there must be nice people hidden in there.

Body balance was a mixture of tai chi and yoga with some Pilates. I've signed up for another class on Monday after Zumba. It was the perfect Friday chill out that I needed.

ProjectPerfect · 08/01/2016 17:09

I'm still looking as I have for the past 20 years to find something I enjoy doing but in the meantime I'm running.

Not far and not fast but I only started in NY so at least I'm getting out. 3.5k done today.

snowfallisbeautiful · 08/01/2016 17:24

Hello please may I join you wonderful exercisers?

I've been running for a couple of years and am a member of a running club, go 3 times a week but I'm still pretty slow. I've done a few 10k's and managed my first half marathon last year which was really hard as I hadn't trained enough at that level of mileage. Desperately want to do some more hm's but finding it hard to put in the training at anything over about 5 miles which is useless obviously.

I do yoga and walk the dog everyday. Also member of a gym and I'm the opposite of Purple whilst I'm quite happy to go and do stuff in the actual gym I've never been brave enough to join a class which is completely ridiculous I know!

KanyesVest · 08/01/2016 18:24

Purple, that class sounds great. I must see if there's anything round here like that. My limited experience of gyms is that the over confident people seem to take up the most space and there are plenty of regular people just doing their own thing. The gym I go to now is a back street boxing gym so no high tech equipment; we use mainly tractor tyres, sledge hammers, kettle bells and free weights. Cardio today was running away from the hell beast spider that crawled out of the tyre we were dragging .

Welcome to our merry band, Snow. I was half thinking of aiming for a half marathon for the end of the year, but I just find running a bit too boring (and I'm too bloody slow), I fear. Guess I'll get back to 10k and see what happens.

Circuits again this morning at boot camp, although less heinous than earlier in the week, so I should be fine for Wine lifting tonight!

I'm beginning to wonder if I should give running another go. There is a running event organised by my son's school towards the end of May which would fit with comeagain and Kanyes races (I need to check the distance before committing though). Alternatively there is a 5 mile race organised by the running club at work in mid-June. Hmmmm.

In the meantime I did 30DS L1D6 & 6W6P L2D3 this evening, and I'm really looking forward to my rest day tomorrow Grin

comeagainforbigfudge · 08/01/2016 20:19

Ive done nothing but stretches today. Although i did spend a lot of the day squatting to pick up/rescue DD, does that count?Grin

SerendipityDooDah · 09/01/2016 09:44

Stretches are good, comeagain, and squatting is great running prep. Lunges too -- your baby might quite enjoy it if you help her while doing walking lunges around the house! Or sitting on your lap while you do bridges (lie down, feet on floor, knees up, and raise your bum) to strengthen your glutes.

I SO don't feel like going for a run but know I need to, so out I go. Will report back later.

Welcome to project and snow! And we'll done to kanye and oubliette for another good exercise day yesterday!

SerendipityDooDah · 09/01/2016 11:09

(Well, not we'll, obviously. God bless autocorrect.)

Run done. Got soaked! Trying hard to focus on the positive, i.e. that I went at all, rather than bemoaning how hard it is to run for 5 minutes now when I used to run so much further ...

snowfallisbeautiful · 09/01/2016 12:01

Thank you for the welcome Smile.

I walked the dog yesterday and that was it, had run 5 miles with the club the night before though.

Going to the gym this afternoon, really need to tone up and get strong! They are my resolutions for this year.

The weather is dreadful so hats off to all those brave enough to go out in it today.

velmadinkly · 09/01/2016 12:30

I ended up walking around my bedroom, 4 steps this way, 4 steps back to achieve my step goal on Thursday. I did Davina 5 week fit dvd yesterday and I've not decided for today. It will probably be a walk.

ProjectPerfect · 09/01/2016 19:22

I did a yoga session (strength and flex combo) at home today. I use an app and went up a level so got a bit of a sweat on.

Also made sure I did my 10k steps which I've done every day this week. Thanks to a sedentary job and a commute by car an average working day is usually less than 2000 steps do feeling pretty happy about this.

ProjectPerfect · 09/01/2016 19:23

velmadinkly I've been know to march/jog on spot to reach step target Grin

snowfallisbeautiful · 09/01/2016 20:48

I've run around the sofa at 11.58 to make sure I reach 10,000 steps Blush.

Went to the gym this afternoon and did 15 mins on the cross trainer, 5 mins rowing, 20 mins weights and 15 mins of yoga.

Does anyone else feel a bit hyper after they've exercised? I quite often feel like this and it's not very nice, get a headache too.
