I have made similar errors with clothing at the gym!

Anglaise1 · 05/01/2016 06:39

Thanks for the heads up about the Food Programme, Suzanne. I listened to it last night and it was really interesting, there are more follow up programmes to follow on the subject of sports nutrition and to see how if Nicole runs faster with her Scott Jurek vegan diet 9 x per day.
Things I remember

  1. Brendan Foster fuelled the morning of a race with tea, lots of toast (with honey if it was a big race). After club sessions they recuperated with a shandy. Sports nutrition was unheard of too, but a lot of Foster's times have still to be beaten by modern day athletes.
  2. Carbs are needed if you want to have fuel to increase your pace at the end of a race. High fat low carb diets may help with long endurance runs. 3)Following a tough run work out, it is important to refuel your muscles with something within an hour of finishing, high protein/high carb. Milk or yogurt are ideal.
  3. the Kenyans in their training camp go out and do their first run of the day on no food. 40kms in around 2h15m Shock Really interesting, am looking forward to the next programme. 7.5 easy dog running miles from me yesterday, sunny and dry Smile 143.3

I read Natural Born Heroes. It's a most peculiar read, one where you're not really sure what his point is and it ends up being a badly written history book with a bit of stuff about how nettles are a perfectly adequate marathon fuel.

suzannecaravaggio · 05/01/2016 09:52

Kenyans run on fresh air according to that program!

suzannecaravaggio · 05/01/2016 10:02

9 meals a day!
That's a lot of food prep!

emummy · 05/01/2016 11:33

Another very wet run, am thoroughly sick of the rain! Get soaked through every time, dog is soaked and filthy, hall full of mud, aargh! And it's to be like this all week. And it's 3 degrees so not even mild. Sorry, feeling rather grumpy! While also grateful to not be one of those poor people affected by the floods upriver from us.

4.5 miles today so 151.8a

custardcreamdreams · 05/01/2016 16:32

I think if I was eating a vegan diet, I'd need 9 meals a day. I feel constantly hungry on the few days I go vegetarian never mind vegan.

4.4 today. Also very wet, cold and windy. Also very sick of the rain, went to step on what I thought was grass with a bit of mud on it, ended up ankle deep Grin

Got new trainers today so that has cheered me up as my Sauconys were on their last legs and they've never felt as stable for me as the Brooks. Giving Asics a whirl this time. Sadly they are pink, no other options, which is a colour I normally hate but I'm going to try and embrace it as they feel really comfortable and people keep buying me pink gym gear for presents anyway

suzannecaravaggio · 05/01/2016 16:38

I've been thinking about shifting from veggie to vegan, I would miss cheese a bit but I'm sure I'd soon forget about it...I still might

8.5 from me, a bit shorter than usual as I feel a bit under the weather, perhaps I got a bit too cold and wet on the last run

Adding in 24.59 for this month so far.

Suzanne – your post has reminded me that I wanted to download some podcasts for longer runs – do you know if the Food Programme is available as a podcast?

In fact, has anyone got good recommendations for podcasts in general? Funny or otherwise.

I can thoroughly recommend Running with the Kenyans by Adharanand Finn. I got his new book (which is about Japanese running) for Christmas. The reviews for that are equally good so I'm looking forward to reading it.

Fifty and lastqueen– that is so very annoying. I've done it before and it's so deflating when you realise you can't run cos you've forgotten a piece of kit

boobz welcome! Rome marathon sounds amazing.

runtothehills I feel for you all suffering with flooding. I've got a few Scottish friends on FB and they are posting pics of all the flooded roads/countryside. It doesn't look like it's going to let up anytime soon either.

cinnamon sorry you are feeling rough with AF but at least you can console yourself that you made it out there

emummy I just want it to get cold and crisp now. I've got lots of shiny new winter running gear that I bought after it went cold for one day and it hasn't been used.

Been on a race booking frenzy, fuelled by race discounts and also my sister who is coming over from the US at Easter. For some reason I thought it was a good idea to join her for a half marathon on Easter Monday, just a few days after my planned 22 mile run idiot Have not yet confessed this to DH Blush

I think it is Louey
Podcasts, what would I do without them, I subscribe to loads, off the top of my head
Richard Herring
Geeks guide to the universe
Thinking allowed
Frank Skinner
Dr Karl

Adharanand Finn I read the sample (for his new book) today, the book is on about £2.50 on kindle, still not sure if I want to buy it, I've been a bit non plussed by most running books I've read, there doesnt seem to be any information in them that I'm not already aware of.

All that stuff about what the elites do, I'm not sure it's all that useful to bog standard joggers like me, I think it's their genes that make them elite and extrapolating their regimes probably has very limited use for me.
Plus they are aiming at winning races, I just want to stay lean and keep running without getting injured

cinnamongreyhound · 05/01/2016 20:13

I haven't got too wet emummy but our very sandy forest is horribly muddy and slidey.

I loved Brendan foster's toast with extra honey as it was a big race comment!

Had a fast run tonight and my legs hurt after yesterday too! 193.29

Anglaise1 · 05/01/2016 21:08

Food Programme definitely available as a podcast, that is how I listen to most BBC radio programmes. I used to buy audio books but podcasts are free. My list includes The Archers Omnibus, Desert Island discs (the back catalogue), Thinking Aloud, Last Word, Women's hour omnibus or late night, Mayo and Kermode film review (2 hours, good for a long run) Friday night comedy on Radio 4, Analysis, the Moral Maze.
13 miles today, dog running and club runs with intervals, was really pleased to to 200m in 45s as I haven't done intervals for ages.
Cinners my pre race breakfast is always toast and honey, a real treat! One reason to look forward to a race.

lastqueenofscotland · 05/01/2016 21:41

Interesting about all the food, I'm vegetarian and trying to eat better for the sake of running.

8.1 today to make up for not going yesterday!
218.39

lastqueenofscotland · 05/01/2016 21:41

Oops should be in bold! And not wrong 214.39

KeyserSophie · 06/01/2016 05:54

Adding 11 from last 2 days to make 215.39. Still really jet lagged and have longhaul bloat but feel better for getting back on it. Remembered I have a little race on Saturday- a 15k trail on a fairly benign course- will therefore be full of road runners and far too fast for me, but will be nice to get back on it.

KeyserSophie · 06/01/2016 05:55

oh crap- what happened there?

Anglaise1 · 06/01/2016 18:11

5 easy miles with the dog. In the rain.

Hello, can I join? 3 miles to start training for a half marathon!

233.39

thedevilinmyshoes · 06/01/2016 19:12

hi dodo I have a half coming up in March I think, when is yours? It's such a nice distance

6.2 Cani x miles from me, I love that I can train both as a mode of transport and as part of my actual work

233.39 + 6.2 = 239.59 (I think 😳)

FiftyNineOhEight · 06/01/2016 19:27

Welcome Dodo - there's a HM thread kicking around somewhere Smile

3 early morning miles from me today - dark and misty. Glad I got out then, as my day fell to pieces mid morning and I couldn't have managed a lunch time run today.

I set off across fields in the semi dark of 7am and densely thick fog, a route that relies on heading roughly towards some pylons but they were of course utterly invisible (am not usually a morning person so this hadn't even occurred to me!)

cinnamongreyhound · 06/01/2016 21:10

Welcome OneFlewOverTheDodosNest! I'm also running a hm at the end of Feb, don't know why really!
