8.7 from me makes 59.9. Got a 10k PB - nice to get but only possible as I never race 10k so don't actually have any "all out" efforts on Strava.

Anglaise1 · 02/01/2016 10:58

Congrats on your PB 10k Keyser
16 miles this morning in the wind and gusts of 40mph wind. Failed completely to do the last half an hour at 12.5kph as my marathon plan instructed, more like 11.5 against the wind. Sad
Was very glad to get home.

3 from yesterday. I've had a few weeks off due to a painful calf.

cinnamongreyhound · 02/01/2016 13:19

Well done KeyserSophie!

I think any run let alone that distance is impressive in those winds Anglaise1, speed is bound to be affected.

parkrun and there and back this morning. Dh has asked me not to run tomorrow so will probably canicross run Monday night as my next run now 83

runtothehills · 02/01/2016 22:57

Hello and happy New Year to all. That's me 1 year on this thread and you've all been fab support Star Flowers.

Keyser well done on your 10k PB. I set one today as well, though I was pretty sure I would as it's the first 10k I've done in nearly 2 years so I hoped I had improved. Driving wind and rain, a pretty big hill for a road race, and a 1.5k section through a muddy quagmire which was my fav bit where I managed to pull up some places (can't take the trail runner from me Grin). 89

Also have 10 to add from Hogmanay to the Dec total,1200.13. Lovely run up in the Caringorms near Aviemore with a friend. Returned home after to find our area devastated by flooding which was really sad to see, and many of our lovely local running routes are now restricted by landslides and washed away bridges Sad.

FiftyNineOhEight · 02/01/2016 23:15

3.1 parkrun miles from me today - I really struggled this morning.

Sorry to hear about your flooding RTTH, well done on you PB - and to you too Keyser

Welcome back Sorelip

Runto congrats on your PB 10k, that's brilliant!
Cinners sorry your dh didn't want you to run today, but as the weather's so crap maybe its just as well.
10 miles this morning in driving wind and rain again. Managed to keep the speed up better but then the distance was shorter.
Didn't really enjoy it.

emummy · 03/01/2016 12:02

Well done runtothehills on your pb.
Horrible weather again today, just did short run as didn't want to get chilled and get sick again as my cold is still not quite gone.

Hello - can I join?

I normally reside on the Beachbody thread (Insanity/P90X etc.,) but this year want to run a marathon so have signed myself up to the Rome mara on April 10th. I have only ever run 30km (trail run) in one go, so will defo be a challenge as I nearly died at the end of that 30!

I am starting from a low base as I had surgery in November so was off exercise for 7 weeks, but am now following the Hal Higdon mara Novice programme (but am having to start on week 5 as it's an 18 week programme but Rome marathon is in 14 weeks!). As a result, I have done 4 runs this week as per his programme: 3m, 5m, 3m and 10m yesterday. I am supposed to cross train today, but am pretty stiff!

Is everyone logging miles in these bolded numbers? Presumably cumulative for the month?

Anglaise1 · 03/01/2016 14:58

Welcome to the running thread Boobz and good luck with your marathon training. If you did a 30km trail race you'll do a marathon. I did the Rome marathon last year (in the rain), going for Barcelona mid March this year.
Yes, the numbers in bold are the cumulative mileage for the month, yours would be welcomed!

Boobz · 03/01/2016 15:24

Thanks Anglaise! Well I suppose mine is only 10 for Jan as the 3 other runs were all done in Dec!

emummy you have done 105.2m in 3 days?! That's amazing!

Boobz · 03/01/2016 15:26

I saw some of the runners in the rain last year Anglaise - looked a bit miserable but then I think Rome in the rain is a lot easier than Rome in the sun which would be baking. What time did you get? What are you aiming for in Barcelona?

Anglaise1 · 03/01/2016 15:41

The rain was quite light and the temperature was around 16°C so perfect although cold and wet waiting for the start (bin bags were very useful!). The only problem was slippery cobblestones - the first and last 5km are run in ancient Rome. The course is quite flat, I remember only one hill.
I did 3h40m, but everyone measured an extra 600m on the marathon and I had 2 pitstops due to tummy problems. I'd love to do 3h30m next time but not sure I'm capable of it.

Anglaise1 · 03/01/2016 15:41

The figures are cumulative for us all, not just individually!

emummy · 03/01/2016 16:32

Gosh Boobz I think 100 miles in 3 days would kill me! That is for us all thankfully. Good luck with your marathon training, Rome sounds amazing.

suzannecaravaggio · 03/01/2016 17:09

10 miles from me, weather was brutal!

I caught a bit of the food program on R4 just before I went out:

'How important is diet to running performance? It's a question Food Programme listener and runner Nicole Marais wanted answers to and so she emailed the programme's production team. This programme explains what happened next....

When Dan Saladino went to meet (and run with) Nicole she explained she had tried lots of different diets, from one based on meat, to a vegetarian diet and onto veganism. She was keen to hear the experience of other runners and athletes and how they eat to run.

Dan hears from Kevin Currell, Head of Performance Nutrition at the English Institute of Sport, to find out about the dietary advice given to Britain's elite athletes. Adharanand Finn, author of "Running With the Kenyans", shares his insights into running, racing and eating in Iten, the town where many the world's most successful distance runners live and train. Kenyan runners eat a lot of ugali, a carbohydrate rich porridge made of maize flour and water.

Elsewhere however, others are arguing that a low-carb, high-fat diet will help runners reach peak performance. Author of Born to Run and Natural Born Heroes, Christopher McDougall, profiles diets based on this principle, that fuelled long runs by resistance fighters during the Second World War and early Iron Man events in the 1980's. It's a controversial approach and many believe it's just the latest food fad to be picked up people by people in the running world.

The programme also features Scott Jurek who eats a carbohydrate rich, vegan diet. It's enabled him to dominate runs like Badwater, a 135 mile race through America's Death Valley.

Will these athletes and running writers give listener Nicole Marais the information she needs to break her own record in this year's London Marathon. Listen, find out and perhaps go on a run afterwards.

Ah! In that case, 125.2

3hr 40 is amazing - I just want to get under 4 hours for my first one tbh. Yes the cobblestones are a bit of a pain - I ran around the Colosseum yesterday and it was very wet and slippy.

lastqueenofscotland · 03/01/2016 17:43

Finally getting my bum back in gear after lots of shitty food and not running enough!! I also took longer to recover from my Xmas eve 16 miler than I thought I would and kept getting very sore

3.1 from me today.

128.3

thedevilinmyshoes · 03/01/2016 21:36

thanks for link to running/food programme suzanne

suzannecaravaggio · 03/01/2016 23:24

I thought it was a pretty good well balanced sort of discussion

thedevilinmyshoes · 04/01/2016 11:17

I'd like a whole channel devoted to it! Brought back happy memories of reading those books and also reassured/reminded me we can run on pretty much any fuel that suits!

3 Cani miles from me to add to 128.3 =

131.3

lastqueenofscotland · 04/01/2016 18:24
