10.7 miles from me this morning, two laps again so big dog could do some and he's not limping after being let off today, hurray!!! Beautiful sunny crisp morning, how wonderful Smile 198.9

suzannecaravaggio · 07/02/2016 12:45

Heads up runners!
Today's food program, radio four
Eating to run

Anglaise1 · 07/02/2016 13:10

Thanks Suzanne just caught it, very interesting again on the subject of what to eat.
Last Queen It was nice to be with someone who understood the pleasure of running, but you are right, sometimes it felt like an intrusion. Maybe if he'd run a lot better than me if would've been different.
Anyway a nice slow 10 mile run this morning, in the sunshine, with 2 girlfriends. That makes 116kms for the week which is too much

I just think it's MY thing, we have a lot of common interests but both have one activity the other detests (distance running for me cricket for him) and it's nice to have my own space. I love my training buddies and time with them.

First ever, and definitely last foray into xc running today... Thought I'd get away with normal shoes and was like bambi on ice. Finished but felt like a waste of a run with a half marathon in two weeks

215.1

karatekimmi · 07/02/2016 16:44

It might have felt like a waste but it might have strengthened muscle and your core . Plus it was a run (I love cross country, even they really muddy wet ones!!)

Was it keysersophie asking about why someone would do 3 5k loops a day, spaced apart??could they be training for a team 12/24 hour challange? We are looking into the conti series.

MyBlackCat · 07/02/2016 17:05

I couldn't face the mud of a xc run so did 12 miles the road. I was able to maintain a consistent pace even though it had a massive hill and I'd done body pump this morning. If I'd kept going to Hal marathon distance it wouldn't have been much outside of 2 hrs so I'm feeling smug Grin

lastqueenofscotland · 07/02/2016 17:21

karate i hope you're right, I'm more tired and sore after that than i was after my 18 mile training run. it started muddy then started to dry and just got glue-y. yuerk.

Anglaise1 · 07/02/2016 18:22

Cross country is something else. It is super training for all types of races but I guess you only enjoy it if like being knee deep in mud at times. But you need to run in spikes, its impossible in normal shoes!

lastqueenofscotland · 07/02/2016 20:06

Anglaise I think I'm just a proper road runner. The marshals were lovely and I enjoyed if because of them but I wouldn't do it again. Great work out and nothing else. Feel I've earnt the glass of naice wine I'm sipping nowb

FiftyNineOhEight · 07/02/2016 20:57

8.5 miles from me this weekend from parkrun tourism and a quick spin when we got back from a weekend away - DH decided he'd like to be home in time to watch the rugby which suited me as I got to ruin daylight Smile

5.34 from me. I think I've got a post tib tendon flare up, two months before my bloody marathon, 13 days before my first of three halfs. Squeaky bum time.

emummy · 09/02/2016 11:15

First interval session for a while, ran out of flat ground and had to do some uphill, not a pretty sight! Beautiful day.

karatekimmi · 09/02/2016 13:06

I've just done Some Yasso intervals for marathon training. Anyone done them? I'm a bit confused as to how hard they should feel. I am aiming for a 5 hour marathon so I should run 800m in 5 mins, but it is a really easy pace (relatively speaking - I can "comfortably" do a 5k at that pace not a marathon)

Loueytb3 · 09/02/2016 13:38

stilllearnin welcome back, hope the running is helping.

anglaise if something is missing, there is not a lot you can do about it, you did the right thing by breaking up with him. Hope you are ok!

kimmi considering you have a 6 month old, that is very impressive running! I can imagine how hectic it must be if both you and DH are marathon training.

cinnamon hope you are ok? I didn't get a ballot place in the Royal Parks so the high cost was in the end irrelevant. Waiting for a no from GNR as well this week.

emummy well done on the hill repeats! Always nice to run with a smile on your face Smile

myblackcat I would probably try and do one OF run at 15 miles or possibly 16 if you can manage it, but then slightly shorter runs until race day.

Suzanne will download that one, thank you. I did in the end listen to the first programme on running and food and it was v interesting, particularly the interviews with Brendan Foster and what he ate before a race!

lastqueen off road races are always much harder and especially if you are slipping around. Even with trail shoes I am steering clear of the really muddy tracks. Can't really justify spikes! Hope your injury clears up.

Great weekend from me, did a race on Saturday (half) which was extremely windy. It was 4 and a bit laps around Eton Dorney lake (where they held the Olympic rowing). Very flat course but very exposed. First mile of each lap was like running into a brick wall. Third mile you were being blown sideways and it felt a little dicey at times. Was aiming for a PB, but also to see what pacing I should do for the next marathon. I wasn't expecting much as I had been feeling rubbish all week with a cold. But unbelievably given that and the windy conditions I got a PB of nearly 7 minutes, just over 1:53. Some of the members of my running club were there and one cheered me around every lap which was fantastic. So I am now aiming for a sub 4hr marathon in April. I do love racing, especially when you PB. There was also a big sense of satisfaction at picking off some of the men in front of me Grin

Adding in 32.1 miles for the past few days to make 267.44

raspberrytart · 09/02/2016 14:01

Hi, can I join? Ive been running about 3 years and done a few halfs and 10k road races and have decided I love the fells and trail runs so have signed up for some of those in the spring. I was a bit demotivated in December as I didnt get out as much as Id liked with the crap weather up here in the north, but I set myself a challenge of 5k everyday for January. I managed, just! The hardest bit was finding the time but glad I did it and it gave me my motivation back. Thanks for reading!! What are the numbers in bold at the bottom of posts?

Anglaise1 · 09/02/2016 19:07

raspberry welcome to the thread, and congratulations for your 5k a day in January! The numbers in bold are the cumulative total of our mileage.
Louey fantastic time for your HM and a whopping 7 minutes off your previous PB in pretty awful conditions is fantastic. You'll do a sub 4 hour marathon I'm sure.
18.7 to add from yesterday and tonight's club session. 16 x 200m intervals in the wind and rain, not pleasant, but we did it. The rest of the club wimped out and just went for a run instead. But then they don't have a marathon in 5 weeks Shock so motivation is probably less.

MyBlackCat · 09/02/2016 20:03

Some treadmill intervals which got faster the longer they went on, hamstrings were screaming at the end Shock

cinnamongreyhound · 09/02/2016 21:05

Hope it feels better soon lastqueenofscotland!

Well done on your pb Loueytb3!

Well done on your session Anglaise1, I hate running in the rain Blush

Lovely run with my friend and the dogs in the forest in the dark tonight 294.5

Loueytb3 · 10/02/2016 14:35

10.44 from me this morning. Legs are still feeling tired after the race and the hills didn't help.

Just had another ballot rejection from GNR. Boo

raspberry welcome!!!

fiftynine damn tourists! It's actually much easier to run in Central London when its raining and they've all gone inside.

suzanne will have a listen, thank you.

22 from me over the last couple of runs
3330.78

suzannecaravaggio · 10/02/2016 16:10

from the transcript:

'Researchers sampled the blood of 17 runners before and after a 24-hour ultramarathon—where runners covered anywhere from 75 to 130 miles on foot. During the race, their guts got leaky—due to a lack of blood flow to the intestines, and the physical trauma from so many jarring miles. Gut bacteria escaped into the blood, where some released toxins. The runners' bodies then responded by launching an immune response, and inflammation set in.

Some runners actually had blood profiles identical to those of patients admitted to the hospital with blood poisoning, or sepsis.

But the most well-trained competitors avoided the problem. Their bodies launched a counterattack, unleashing anti-inflammatory compounds to tamp down their bodies' immune overreaction.

The authors say just four hours of activity is extreme enough to kick off this chain of inflammation. Suggesting it's key to gradually build up to new personal bests, even if they're not ultraworthy'

My ballot luck is insane... Great north run here we come... The day after my friends wedding and a week before a marathon...

4 from yesterday to add

Anglaise1 · 10/02/2016 18:22

Sorry about your ballot rejection from the GNR Louey and congratulations LastQueen on getting it, I don't know how you do a HM a week before a marathon I'm not sure I could!
Suzanne thanks for the link, I wonder if that is my problem, but it kicks in after an hour and a half rather than 4 hours so maybe not. I have a couple of friends (both men) who always set off too fast on their ultras and suffer with those symptoms too. I wonder if some people are just more susceptible than others to the jarring. The podcast didn't say if diet helped!
11.5 from today, a dog run and another longer interval session, 4 x 400m @1m42s, 4 x 600m @ 2m37s and 2 x 200m @ 45s
Only 2 weeks of serious training left.
