Anglaise thank you - I am really feeling it now in my left leg. I wasn't quite calf deep, but there were a few puddles that I ended up going through (no way round!) so I was splashed up to my knees!

I just don't know what to do about trail shoes - the country park is a mile from my house, so I run there on the road, then run off road for 4 or 5 miles (with the odd short bit of path) and run the mile (or longer - I can add loops like I did today) home on the road. I don't want to have to drive to the park and put trail shoes on when I get there, but from what I've read they aren't good for roads Confused

What sort of trail shoes do you have fifty? Are they very heavy? I have a pair of Salomon Speedcross that I only use for real trails (no road) otherwise I run in road shoes or hybrids. Would a hybrid shoe be an option for you?
For cross country competitions spikes are essential in the mud, but not for normal runs, ever.

FiftyNineOhEight · 17/01/2016 18:43

I don't have trail shoes Anglaise. I will look into hybrids, as I run on a mixture of surfaces. I really enjoy the off-road running, and although it is challenging, I think it is slightly better on the joints (having lived though DH and DM's injuries from over-use, I am keen not to end up in the same boat!)

I took my new trail shoes out for a run this morning. Probably not a good idea to then do 13 miles as I now have a couple of blisters from them rubbing Shock I had a couple of bits on road and wouldn't want to run too far in them on the road as they don't feel like they offer the same support. Fine on the trail though. In all honesty they are probably half a size too big but I couldn't be bothered to send them back to change. They are in no fit state to be returned now as I have most of Leicestershire stuck to them Grin.

5.5 from me much better after this weekends disasters rather enjoyed that

cinnamongreyhound · 18/01/2016 20:39

That's not bad though MyBlackCat! I'm impressed with a couple of blisters from 13 miles in brand new shoes.

Glad you've had a good run lastqueenofscotland!

4 miles with the canicross club, another sub zero run but good fun. 797.3

KeyserSophie · 19/01/2016 06:28

Adding total of 11 from running last night and then each way gym commute today. Also, I'm announcing that I'm going to track tonight- just to make sure I go Grin

Tried a new route through the woods today, got a bit mixed up so did 2 miles extra! Never mind, it was lovely through a little snow, up about 800 feet, with the extra challenge that the car park was solid ice!
814.55

KeyserSophie · 19/01/2016 13:55

I went! Adding 5 miles of intervals (800/600/400/200 x 4) to make 819.55

Very impressed with those of you running in ice and snow. Last time I did that I fell flat on my back on some ice and got an egg on my head.

The temps here are due to fall to 9 degrees this weekend, and it's the HK100k trail race. Cue lots of articles on how to survive extreme cold Grin. We get the government "beware of hypothermia" posters when it falls below 10 degrees.

emummy · 19/01/2016 14:44

Ooh, 9 degrees, tropical! Was -4 for my run today at 10am! I'm more impressed with your intervals keyser! Am due to start my training plan on Feb 1st, intervals & hill reps here we come!

runtothehills · 19/01/2016 14:44

4 fab days with a mixture of running and skiing. 8 miles up local hills in the snow and ice on Saturday (fell 3 times on the descent Keyser, lucky landing each time!). Sunday skiing all day with DD2 in the cold crisp sunshine, had to drag her and DD1 (who was in ski club) away at the end of the day, they didn't want to stop. Yesterday did 5 miles in local forest, similar to emummy lots of ice. Today escaped for a ski tour up near Braemar, 10 miles, 1200m ascent and some fresh powder. It was about -8 up there, not sure what HK wold make of those temps Keyser Grin

lastqueen I know you didn't get a PB but was it a complete disaster?? laps would drive me mad, at least it gives you a time to beat for the next race!

myblack fifty I only run in trail shoes, the 10k I did on the 2nd was 4/5ths road and I used my Speedcrosses then, certainly gave me an advantage on the 2k mud section Grin

13 running miles = 832.55

suzannecaravaggio · 19/01/2016 16:46

36 from me (over the last 3 runs)
868.55

suzannecaravaggio · 19/01/2016 16:48

it's around 2/3 degree's in my neck of the woods, long tights weather but no ice (not by the time I'm up and about anyway Blush)

cinnamongreyhound · 19/01/2016 20:05

4 miles of hill sessions tonight, bleurgh! 872.55

Anglaise1 · 19/01/2016 20:56

Runforthehills your weekend sounds fab.

Cold but no ice or snow, best of all no rain. Didn't run yesterday for the first time in a month. Ran over 110km last week which is too much so dog is getting used to walks instead of runs, although his pace is pretty much the same regardless.
10 miles dog run plus club session today

FiftyNineOhEight · 19/01/2016 21:09

Thank you RTTH for the trail shoe advice.

110km Anglaise Shock

lastqueenofscotland · 19/01/2016 21:36

110km I a week?! That's amazing!

4.2 of intervals

886.75

Anglaise1 · 20/01/2016 07:05

Actually it was 116km, 12 hours of running. The long run for marathon training has bumped my mileage up. I don't have much teaching work so have the time to run unlike most of you with full time jobs (I'm in awe of how much running you all do with the time constraints!). I have an interview today with another language school so fingers crossed I'll have some more work soon which will mean less running time. Not sure my 50 year old body will cope otherwise!

MyBlackCat · 20/01/2016 20:17

3.5 recovery miles from me - blisters problematic although legs didn't feel too bad Smile

890.25

KeyserSophie · 21/01/2016 05:58

Adding 6.2 from my gym commute today to make 896.45

Anglaise, I am in awe of your mileage. I am trying to average 60km a week and struggling with that. On that note though, help me figure this running mystery -

There's someone I follow on Strava (dont know her in RL) who runs about 115k a week, but, here's the weird thing, she does it in multiple 5k runs (i.e. 3/4 5k runs a day, sometimes with only a few hrs in between). All on the same route. Why would you do that? Is it a training strategy I havent heard of? The only other reason I can think of is she's living on Bounts points and trying to get as many 20 min runs in as she can.

In other news, I've hurt my back trying to get 55kg above head (basically failed to commit to the lift- had that split second "shit I cant do this" moment, which is always fatal). Feels muscular so hopefully not major. I also realised I have to run a trail marathon next weekend and I am not marathon fit. Crap.

emummy · 21/01/2016 10:58

Hope your back is not too bad keyser.
Easy recovery run in the woods today after a tough boot camp yesterday where I pulled an abdominal muscle, ouch!
900.3

Anglaise1 · 21/01/2016 11:12

Keyser sorry to hear about your back injury, 55kgs is massive you must have excellent upper body strength to even consider it! Take it easy.
No idea why anyone would want to run 5k several times a day, unless they don't have the confidence to go any further - I didn't for the first year I ran, but then I only ran 5km once a day. Running more than once in a day is good for your endurance but a PITA due to the extra time needed to change clothes, take showers etc. (especially in the HK climate). What sort of time is she doing the 5k in?
emummy I hope your pulled ab muscle gets better soon. Sounds painful.
20 miles to add from the last 2 days, 0°c and freezing wind today, but no rain.

Loueytb3 · 21/01/2016 15:08

Anglaise – I'm in awe of your 116km. That’s a serious amount of running! I actually converted it to miles to see how many it was (72). Even on my high mileage weeks I am nowhere near that.

Keyser – hope your back recovers soon!!! If its muscular I'm sure it will but I know how painful back injuries can be. I have no idea why someone would want to run 5km repeats, especially on the same route. Sounds really boring! Hope it's not too cold there, I know we used to laugh about the cold weather warnings in HK but without heating, it does get very cold inside.

Fiftynine – I have just bought some trail shoes. I went to my local running shop and had a long chat about what exactly I needed them for. I also have trails with some paved sections and some of it is on the road so I didn't want shoes that I would really feel the soles through on harder ground. I tried on Adidas Kanadias (too hard/not enough cushioning), some Saucony ones (which I liked but slipped off my heels) and Adidas Response Trail Boost which is the one I bought. I have only used them once but they coped very well on different terrain. There was easily a mile of paved path during my route.

Runtothehills – very jealous of the skiing! I bet it was fantastic

MyBlack – hope the blisters are improving.

Struggling with cold hands on my runs, even with gloves on it takes 3 miles or so for them to feel like they are part of me. I think I need to get some thermal running gloves, if such a thing exists….

Adding in 23.69 from the last few days to make 943.99

suzannecaravaggio · 21/01/2016 15:42

Thats a good weight for a clean and press/clean and jerk Keyser (assuming thats what you were doing?)
I'm super careful in the gym these and don't do anything that my lower back doesn't like, so that means cables or dumbells for most pressing
But then I'm knocking on a bit:o

12 miles from me
955.99

familygermsareok · 21/01/2016 15:44

9.5 miles to add from 3 runs over the last week. Did 4 miles today, furthest I've run for a good while, really enjoying being out running again but fitness is rubbish and the hills are hard! Sad

Hope injuries get better soon keyser and emummy

FiftyNine I have used both Adidas kanadia and saucony peregrines for mixed terrain running. I think they are hybrids rather than pure trail shoes but they are brilliant for muddy trails and non technical off road stuff (through fields, etc) and are fine on a bit of Tarmac too. I often run about 3-4 miles of Tarmac on a mixed run.

Impressive mileage Anglaise, good your new DP likes running too Smile
