fifty emummy studying and work is hard, but I found I could fit far more into a short space of time doing my part-time MSc than I ever could when I was a full-time student doing my BSc. I think juggling work, children and other running commitments make you much better at time management.

Managed a 6 miler today, no running over the weekend as I was on a Pilates Instructor refresher course, which my body can certainly feel now!! On that note suzanne anglaise I would argue stretching alone is not sufficient to prevent injuries. You also need to train to run, PITAs often are the result of hip and pelvic instability which need focused exercise as well as post running stretching.

Fab times lastqueen hopefully a good omen for your race this weekend. Track session sounds gruelling Keyser, I'm like anglaise I'm not sure of my 5 or 10k pace. I find I can only produce my fast paces when in a race or especially when chasing and/or being chased in a handicap.

Suzanne I don't stretch... I found i get less sore if I have a 5/10 min walk at the end rather than stretch.

5.5 from me today. Wasn't feeling it and became far more about the self discipline of actually finishing the run than time. 3 months ago id have given up.

Rubbish myblackcat!

Mine isn't great, there are calculators online KeyserSophie and my 5k is slower than it should be for my 10k pace. 5k pb 25:54, 10k pb 54:56.

MyBlackCat · 11/01/2016 20:08

I think my miles got lost in some x posts so adding them again

Did anyone get a place in the first round of the gnr ballot? I didn't but thinking it's probably not the end of the world!

emummy · 12/01/2016 10:47

Interesting run this morning; Storm Frank may have gone but the debris remains! Got very wet feet and had to cross one deep puddle by balancing on the planks of wood floating in it! Needless to say, the dog had a great time!

Nosing on Garmin connect there's 0.36, one's 8min/mile and the other's 8.36, between my 5k and 10k. I haven't a clue about pacing though :)

Well done for finishing lastqueen, I'm sure you have an accomplished feeling now.

Interesting about stretching. I don't usually stretch before and do a bit of a walk before instead but have tried to get into the habit after. I went to a yoga class a few weeks ago and my IT band was really sore for days after, haven't been back.

Also impressed with those of you studying. I was until I got pregnant with my youngest and would love to get back to it but honestly can't see where on earth I would find the time now.

Your dog must have been filthy by the end of that emummy.

8 to add today and 2.4 short run from the weekend.

Thanks guys. I needn't have worried because there were groups based on HM PB, which was great because it would have been a bit crap just running round the track alone, trying to remember where the 500m started and stopped, with racing snakes whizzing past me. My group was pacing 3:50-4:10 which was less of a struggle than I thought (although i imagine is considerably faster than my 5k pace), probably as I only had to run for 2 mins at a time and then got a minute off. Wouldn't say I enjoyed it, but it was nice to be able to just run without worrying about tripping over stuff for once, and everyone was friendly. It was also super efficient, which is a major plus in my book. Adding that and my gym commute this morning to make 516.23

Anglaise1 · 12/01/2016 19:20

Keyser So pleased you enjoyed your track interval session. I'm convinced that speedwork is essential to increase aerobic capacity. Even if you run mostly trails it can help.
emummy is your dog as fed up as mine of being hosed off after each outing?
11.5 from today, little dog run, then club session including 12 x 200m intervals. In a hailstorm. Debating whether or not to do a 7k women's race or a 10k mostly mens race Sunday or both.

Sirzy · 12/01/2016 20:19

I have just done a 5k treadmill run in 37 mins, slow compared to most of you but my fastest!

cinnamongreyhound · 12/01/2016 21:01

Glad to see you posting again Sirzy

Mine just get a quick towel down Anglaise1, the joys of short haired dogs!! They were very confused by our interval session tonight though! Big dog went in the pond with every lap we did and sprinted off as we did our quick bit (7 something min miles). Little dog was unimpressed due to the rain!

3.8 with warm up and warm down and 2x 3 lots of efforts with rest between 534.63

lastqueenofscotland · 12/01/2016 21:54

4.1 from me. 7 runs in 6 days. Loads of New Years resolution-ers at clubs who don't get the etiquette and get in faster runners way. Actually looking forward to my rest day which never happens 538.73

emummy · 13/01/2016 11:05

No running today, boot camp instead. Beautiful sunny morning, -1 so plenty of layers. Feel good now though.
Dog is a Labrador, so gets towel dried but I think she's heading for a bath this weekend!

FiftyNineOhEight · 13/01/2016 11:54

2.4 miles home from dropping the car at the garage for a service - I will need to run or cycle back for it this afternoon. It would have been longer but DH had helpfully booked the plumber for 30 minutes after the car needed to be dropped.

Cinners emummya short haired dog is certainly less maintenance when it is wet and muddy! My border collie has a medium coat and flicks his feet up so gets filthy even on walks let alone runs.
It's definitely colder here now - I ran in long tights and gloves for the first time this winter last night.
Fifty good for you running or cycling to the garage. I do that too rather than take the courtesy car offered.
Does anyone else do pylometric training alongside running? I've been reading how good it is and how much it helped Paula Radcliffe (along with the core strength training).
5.7 easy miles from me and the dog this morning.

Logging in 37.02 miles since last Friday. Damn blisters are still giving me problems. I should probably stop running for a few days to let them properly heal, but that would be sensible and I'm stubborn. I hate missing runs when I'm not ill. The people who make Compeed are getting a lot of money out of me at the moment.

Lastqueen – I also did not get a place in first round of the GNR ballot. I wait with baited breath for the results rejection email from the full ballot next month

Well done Sirzy - you will keep on getting quicker.

Keyser – glad you went in the end - I think track sessions probably seem more scary then they actually are in reality. I do a similar drill to that – 400m at approx. 1.55 min and then 200m gentle jog. Not as many reps as you but still feel a bit sick by the last one though.

Anglaise no I haven't done Brighton before, I will pop over to the marathon thread when I get a chance. You should come over and do a half here. I still haven't decided which one I'm doing in Feb – the weekend I wanted to do one (20/21) we are likely to be going to the ILs in Cornwall. There aren't many the weekend before and the weekend after is too late. There is a really dull one the first weekend of Feb so I may end up doing that, or driving a long way to one the following weekend. I need to book it soon though. My problem is that I need a flat one because I'm using it as a pacing run for the marathon and a hilly one will not be a good test of my best half pace. Plus I'm not keen on hills Grin

Can someone explain to me how Strava works? Who sets up the segments? Also, is it worth going premium or not. I have to confess I am getting slightly addicted to it, although I still don't really know what I'm doing. It doesn't help that a lady I know from a Runnersworld thread is the leader on every segment I'm in! I've got no chance of beating her, she is a sub 3hr15 marathon runner…

Sirzy · 13/01/2016 16:02

I don't think I will ever get quicker than that it has took me forever to get to that point! Still it all counts!

I have no idea about pylometric training Anglaise or strava Louey but I did have a successful blister management system back in the summer though consisting mainly of taping with kt tape.

I cant say how that compares to compeed though because I've not tried them

cinnamongreyhound · 13/01/2016 16:43

My whippet x has no hair on her underneath at all! Greyhound has a bit more fur. Pic of them on my mums sofa on Monday night Smile

No idea on strava, but interested to know especially related to parkrun.

Didnt get above 1C here today Anglaise1! It rained on us last night but felt cold too.

Running thread part 8
MyBlackCat · 13/01/2016 17:09

I'll try to answer the strava questions... Anyone can set segments so if you wanted to set a certain run or loop as a segment you could. Don't think they allow steep downhill segments for cycling as that may be dangerous. I only have the free app, I think premium allows you to upload hr data and analyse your runs in more detail.

My parkrun is a two lap course and there are segments on particular stretches of it as well as each loop so it gives me a good idea of where I have lost/gained time. It recognises runs do do regularly and tells you the quickest time you've done that run in which helps motivate me.

3.5 miles from me tonight

599.35

KeyserSophie · 14/01/2016 05:42

I have premium and you get more granularity on the leaderboards, the opportunity to set targets and better race and interval analysis, plus you can see who you know who's also out in the vicinity (slightly stalkerish and only works if you use the app to record your runs rather than syncing with your watch later). However, the main "add" is the HR data/analysis via the "suffer score" chart mechanism so if you're not racing a lot and not using a HR monitor for training it's not worth paying for premium (you also need to know your max HR for this to be actually useful- it defaults to 220-age but mine is higher than that). I pay because I have a Suunto watch and the associated app/back end- Movescount- is really crap, which is a shame because the Suunto technology is better than Garmin. Don't know what the Garmin app is like for HR analysis/target setting but if it does what you need it to do, dont bother also paying for Strava, unless you want to stalk hot men around your neighbourhood Grin. The leaderboards are a bit misleading in that there are clearly people who just max out that segment to get the CR rather than incorporating it into a longer run like most people do. I find them mainly useful for comparing my own time over those segments- can make a boring run a bit more interesting if you target pace on a couple of segments.

Adding 6.2 from gym commute to make 605.55

cinnamongreyhound · 14/01/2016 08:24

Thanks KeyserSophie!

4 miles in the dark frost this morning before the snow started, my garden is getting white already! 609.55

cinnamongreyhound · 14/01/2016 08:24

Sorry and MyBlackCat!

emummy · 14/01/2016 11:22

Hope you get the right amount of snow cinnamon, where it looks pretty but doesn't cause problems!
Am absolutely frozen! Ran up local hill in the woods, -1 at the bottom, God knows what at the top where there was a nasty icy wind. Had to wrap my buff round my head to defrost my ears, not a good look on me, especially done without a mirror! The way down was a challenge, streams across the path now turned to ice, and the wind in my face making my eyes water. Best bit was when dog though she was running along a stream - it was solid ice and she went about 20feet on her bottom, looking confused! Am now nursing coffee after very hot shower and still feel cold.
