Cinamonyou must have other dogs looking longingly and wishing their humans would run instead of boring old walking :o

runtothehills · 17/09/2015 09:01

My dog is the only one I know who gets excited when they see me in Lycra Grin Grin Grin

familygermsareok · 17/09/2015 09:21

cinnamon I'm well impressed with all the running in the dark. I love the idea of your dogs having lights too! Is that on their harnesses so that you can see where they are or do they actually need lights to see? I just assumed that dogs had good nocturnal vision but I don't know much about it < loving the picture of dogs with their own mini head torches Grin >

There is a straight, flat section of lit road by my house and I just used to run up and down that when it was dark. Boring, but I usually used it for interval training. Beyond that I am into a mile of unlit trails, partially through trees, then unlit rural roads. I got a head torch towards the end of last winter and found it quite exciting running in the dark, although I imagine that might wear off after a while!
First outing for the head torch again this morning. Dark when I left and light when I got back.
have added vampires to the potential hazards to watch out for

801.2 + 5.1 = 806.3

Purpletoes · 17/09/2015 09:45

Thanks everyone I am deleting better about the time now. Although haven't been out running since as DD caught her brother's preschool cold and is all snotty and whining not eating just bf. Looks better today though so hoping to do an interval session with the club this evening.

I run with a hrm mainly cause I like gadgets really need to look at the stats more often.

Happy running everyone.

cinnamongreyhound · 17/09/2015 10:00

Sorry to ruin the image familygermsareok but it's just on their harnesses so I can see them! You can get lights to go on the collar to light the path in front of them but I think that's more for owners than dogs as mine can see fine without.

Was just light enough at 6 this morning Sad (need my phone emoticon here who is crying not just sad!) usual 4 miles with dogs and ladies, 4 of us today! 810.3

FlukeSkyeRunner · 17/09/2015 10:04

3.3 miles from me last night - DH was late home from work, so I had my first run in the dark since the spring. I like running in the dark - but I do run mainly on illuminated roads and cycle paths. I definitely agree with those who commented on the mental health benefits of running. I started running in an attempt to lose a bit of weight - which didn't happen - but it makes me feel so good. I run now for fitness and mental health benefits.

A couple of miles from me this morning, last before hm on Saturday. Felt fine but when walking dog this afternoon got a sudden bout of nausea, which still hasn't completely settled. Am lying in bed now hoping it goes away!

Anglaise1 · 17/09/2015 15:00

I hope you feel better soon emummy. Are you eating enough? Will you be eating mainly pasta tomorrow? Good luch for Saturday Flowers
I had to use my head lamp for the first time this morning (it gets light around 7.30am now). I live in the depth of the countryside and there are no lights at all - on the rare occasions if there is no moon or stars it is pitch black.
A few dog running miles and sociable 6 miles with a friend making 10 miles in total. Doing a little very hilly 5k race Saturday evening for fun, lol. I've never actually done a 5k race before Blush and this certainly won't be one to do a good time on!

8.8 from me today. Tired. Tired tired. Having a few days off. Not feeling all that good at the moment.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 17/09/2015 22:16

3 Central London lunchtime miles from me - tourist season is easing off and there were not quite as many crowds as usual.

Last time I got tangled up with a little dog on one of those stupidly long invisible leads the owner told me to to be silly, it wouldn't hurt me. I told her that I was more worried about hurting it if it got under my feet and I kicked it by mistake. She seemed a bit surprised that this could happen Smile

Re heart rates and first miles, here is one of my favourite links. In simple terms your muscles are screaming out for oxygen during the first mile to covert glucose to energy, which sends up your heart rate sky-high as it pumps oxygenated blood around your body, but once you are in some kind of equilibrium between oxygen intake and transportation your heart rate can drop (I think).

Purpletoes · 17/09/2015 22:59

5 miles from me tonight. Warm up and down plus intervals 4 x800m

Was hard but feels good. Off to read the article on hrm.

emummy hope you feel better soon.

KeyserSophie · 18/09/2015 04:46

6.8 of climbing practice from me (+1,100m) to make 845.5. Haven't done much actual running this week as have been focusing on climbs, but heading out tomorrow with the aim of doing the first 25k of a race that I'm targeting a big time improvement in. Am going to take my HR monitor.

We're quite lucky with light here in that we dont get a big seasonal change-gets light between 5.30-6.30am and properly dark between 6-7.30pm.

Got new shoes- Hoka Challenger- which are the trail equivalent of the Clifton. Dont think they'll be robust enough for everyday training but look lovely and comfy for long races and are definitely wider than the mafate's.

Feel better soon emummy and lastqueen, hope you benefit from a few rest days. Good luck in your race Anglaise.

MyBlackCat · 18/09/2015 08:07

4.6 miles yesterday - an easy run with hill sprints in the middle, legs ache this morning.

850.1

suzannecaravan · 18/09/2015 15:05

2.2 miles intervals yesterday
10.5 miles today
=862.8

thanks for the link Ohoneoh interesting read:)

I also wonder if after 10 mins or so we start to release the various feelgood chemicals which make us less aware of how hard running feels, I often find that there is another burst of some kind of feelgood thing after about 70-80 minutes

Anglaise1 · 18/09/2015 15:39

2.2 miles intervals yesterday
picking myself up off the floor Suzanne intervals, really?? How did you find them, useful/hard/horrible/endorphin inducing?
Yes, thanks for the article Ohone - it's so true, I checked my cardio today and it took at least 2kms for it to settle from 160 down to a comfortable 125 rate at around 10kph for the longish run I did with a friend this afternoon. Once the heart rate settles it is no effort at all to keep going.
11.6 miles so

suzannecaravan · 18/09/2015 18:15

yes I took your advice Anglaise :o
bit worried about making the pita worse but strangely it seems better...I think I have a bit of glute DOMS today
I enjoyed it although I'm not used to trying to run fast and it felt as if I might trip over my own feetBlush
no endorphin rush at all.

Rough plan is to do it about once every 4 days (ish) I did lamp post intervals, ran for 2 lamp posts walked for one, maybe I should have gone for a 1:1 ratio?

I'm trying to see it not as 'going for a run' but as a session of running related power/strength exercises.

Thats a pretty low heart rate!
Mine is around 150 at that speed, it has improved so maybe I can squeeze a teeny bit more efficiency out of myself

suzannecaravan · 18/09/2015 18:20

will I build a bowling ball butt if I do regular sprint training?

I do hope so :o

lastqueenofscotland · 18/09/2015 21:52

Day off after feeling like lead yesterday.

Q for marathoners... Not got one full April next year. Planning in doing 16 miles on Sunday then 20 next weekend... Is it worth keeping the mileage up or am I just risking injury Hmm

KeyserSophie · 19/09/2015 05:30

Queen I'd probably keep it up to 15 miles or so, and then start building up from 15 after Christmas, mainly because I couldn't be arsed to keep going for 20 mile runs though :-). Are you doing London? I'm hoping for a place in the International ballot- got a 25% chance. If I get it I'll have to seriously raise my game- I'm such a turtle on the tarmac now.

13 from me this morning to make 887.4. Was supposed to be 5k longer but I stupidly left my soft flasks behind (and my HR monitor) and was out of water after 19k, so just jogged 2k back to the ferry rather than doing 7k more trail. There were lots of snakes this morning too, and the bit I skipped is known as "snake alley" (or ankle breaker alley- narrow, rocky, overgrown, sheer drop to the side). It was an easy decision to head back, put it that way.

Wore my new shoes- really comfortable but not enough protection for a very rocky trail. Would be great for mixed terrain though, as I do feel very clumpy on the tarmac in my usual trail shoes.

lastqueenofscotland · 19/09/2015 08:02

I am doing LDN got a charity place so know before the ballot. Good luck! done it before and the atmosphere is remarkable.
I'm uming and erring as i'm not injury prone but don't want to overdo it now and it catch up in feb or something

MyBlackCat · 19/09/2015 11:11

3.1 Parkrun miles from me so 890.5 was pleased with my time so a good start to the weekend

familygermsareok · 19/09/2015 11:49

9.75 this morning. Tried a new path which started out promising but got very overgrown in the middle so I emerged soaking wet and well nettle-stung. But having read about your snake alley Keyser I don't think I've got anything to complain about!

Good luck with your races Anglaise and emummy. It is a glorious day here, hope the weather extends far enough North for Crathes Smile

I know what you mean about lack of endorphins after intervals suzanne. I enjoy the knowledge I've been running but I don't get the buzz or deep satisfaction from them. They do speed me up though. and I think my glutes are a bit less flabby than they used to be

How are you finding the hill sprints BlackCat? I really enjoyed them but don't think my Achilles is up to trying again just yet. I think I increased them too soon as I didn't feel I was doing enough.

cinnamon I suspected as much about the doggy lights. I will still hang on to my image of them in mini head torches though as it makes me smile Grin

890.5 + 9.75 = 900.25

lastqueenofscotland · 19/09/2015 15:43

Just 1.1 for me today, tried to sprint it so wasn't a waste of time but had no time but still wanted to say I got out there! 901.3

emummy · 19/09/2015 16:00

Crathes hm done! Beautiful sunny day, which is nice but made it hot work! Up and down course, with 2 off road sections with puddles to dodge. Lovely finish downhill in front of the castle so was able to sprint and got a pb! A minute and a half faster, am very happy with that as it was a real slog in the heat. Lots of people did not look happy.
