Congrats on your10k Purpletoes. Its quite something to be racing again just 6 months after giving birth and I'm sure at your next 10k in 8 weeks you'll decrease 65m time especially if it is flat.
7.3 junk dog running miles today. Wore my heart monitor but really have no idea what anything means because I'm not sure of my max heart rate, I'm guessing around 170 cos I have quite a low resting rate. I want to find out if my heart is better for shorter faster races or longer slower ones and know that the speed at which your heart increases and then slows is important but in what way I really don't know! Does anyone else monitor their heart rate?

Does anyone else monitor their heart rate?
yes, pretty much 24/7 :o
well not quite, but for anything that counts as exercise I do.
akaik there's no relationship between resting and max HR, just that the greater the gap the more 'reserve cardiac capacity' you have
mhr drops off at ave' 1bpm per year (irrespective of fitness) the rough formula is 220-age to predict mhr

My mhr (ie the highest I have ever tracked it) is 192, my rhr is low 40's

cinnamongreyhound · 15/09/2015 07:21

Well done purpletoes and yay FlukeSkyeRunner!

I used to monitor my hr but the band started pinching so I stopped wearing it. Never really paid much attention more for calorie information. Maximum for me was 180something.

suzannefollowmyvan · 15/09/2015 08:28

I use a wrist strap hrm, the chest strap was a pain to use

Anglaise1 · 15/09/2015 11:59

Mine is a chest strap and as long as it is underneath a brassière top type bra thingy it seems to stay in place rather than end up around my waist. A friend of mine has just brought a sports bra from Decathlon which has attachment fasteners for the heart monitor device (those that are detachable from the belt, mine isn't Sad. A neat solution (although it apparently chafes a little!)

cinnamongreyhound · 15/09/2015 13:11

Mine was a chest one but kept trapping bits of skin between it and my bra!

runtothehills · 15/09/2015 13:55

Suzanne Anglaise do either of you use the HRM for actual training or just to analyse post run. This site gives some nice percentages for training and race paces which a friend suggested to me, but would need to get a HRM first Grin

Purpletoes well done on getting back out and racing Star

19 miles over the past 2 days. 4 yesterday evening whilst DD2 at Gymnastics, and a lovely sunny 15 this morning on a recce of the Illuminator run which I think you're doing too emummy? Was talked into signing up last week by a fellow club member. Killer hill just at the end (as well as at the start), and won't have the lovely views to distract you when doing it in the dark, but should be fun!

emummy · 15/09/2015 16:06

2 killer hills, excellent! Am going to have a look at the route with a friend who's walking it, once hm is out of the way. Shame about the views! My big worry at the moment us the thought that I will need to go and train in the dark! Planning to take dog for moral support!

familygermsareok · 15/09/2015 17:29

Well done on 10k Purpletoes and good luck for the next one.

Grin at your brush with royalty OhOne, that is so cute.

I liked the idea of the Illuminator run but I am away on a boozy girls weekend then. I will raise a Wine or several to you. I hadn't thought about lack of views, was thinking the novelty of running in the dark would be fun, but it might be a long way with not a lot to take your mind off it.
Good luck with Crathes too emummy. You've kinda got to do it when it's that close to you Smile

I looked at that one too but Sept is a busy birthday month for us so it's hard to get a free weekend.

cinnamongreyhound · 15/09/2015 20:09

I run in the dark all winter fanilygermsareok you need a lot more motivation!!! Have my head torch and still run in the forest, the dogs have lights too.

4.5 miles tonight with friend and doggies and friends friend too. 702.78

MyBlackCat · 15/09/2015 20:11

Just over 3 miles doing some tempo intervals on the treadmill after work. I felt pretty good tonight so hope my little slump is over Smile

Anglaise1 · 15/09/2015 20:37

Thanks for that link runtothehills. I wore my HRM for the club training and was at around 125 for the warm up jog at 10kph for 50 mins which shows why endurance isn't a problem for me. OTOH I think I should push myself more on short distances too as I'm way off what the link says for 5k and 10k race speed Blush
One of my friends from the club is always at 165 just for the warm up jog so she has no hope of ever doing endurance running. It just shows how important the heart-rate is in running capability and what distance you are suited too.
14.7 miles in total today, arms had a good work out too as I spent this morning stacking wood.
720.6 if my maths is correct...

lastqueenofscotland · 15/09/2015 21:27

5 interval miles from me tonight 725.6

KeyserSophie · 16/09/2015 01:55

11.2 from me from last night and this morning to make 736.8 - 11k of climbing and a bit of contour last night (almost lost my light- need to remember to recharge the battery more often) and then 7 this morning- did a circuit I usually do as a social but put a bit more pace on it.

Re HR, I don't use one at the moment but think I might start. I feel like I have a reasonably good feel for where I am in terms of cardio effort, but might be good to see what the variations are, especially on the hills- i.e. see if there's a big trade off between HR and speed. Anglaise It;s interesting what you said re. your friend- I have a friend who is similar. His HR will go to 160 almost straight off when we run together despite being pretty fit, whereas mine feels (I can't say for sure as no HRM) much less than that. He's quite good at 20km races but usually blows up big time on anything much longer. I wonder if that's a factor.

suzannecaravan · 16/09/2015 15:17

10.5 from me

  • 736.8 =747.3

mostly in lovely soft cool rain:)

I use my hrm for post run scrutiny of charts and graphs Runto
my heart rate often starts out quite high and then settles down after a mile or so, sometimes it's higher than average for no apparent reason.

I'm not really aware of my heart rate when I'm running, so without the hrm I'd have no idea it it was higher or lower than normal

suzannecaravan · 16/09/2015 15:30

from what I understand heart rate (at any given speed) is only part of the picture.

For instance, I have good heart rate reserve for my age (the difference between rhr and mhr) but I'm pretty slow for the amount of training I do (although obviously I could train 'smarter')

I therefore conclude that I have piss poor running economy and maybe also inferior lung capacity
oh well :o

suzannecaravan · 16/09/2015 15:40

or to put it another way you need to have all your ducks in a row
and I have only one duck :o

Loueytb3 · 16/09/2015 16:26

Adding in 47.46 miles from the past week. I've been powering through a cold although I have succumbed today and not run as planned. It doesn't help that its absolutely pissing it down outside and I didn’t fancy the treadmill. So I'm feeling fat, grumpy and just want to eat.

OhOne – I'm running the Abingdon marathon on 18th October. Next week I have a 22-miler to run but then its taper time so I can see the finishing strait. Just need to shift the cold now.

I monitor HR periodically (with a chest strap). My highest ever HR recorded was just over 200 which is pretty high(!) but generally I get up to around 175bpm when doing interval training. My HR does seem to shoot up pretty quickly when I exercise but my resting HR is reasonably low (around 50). It does seem to follow a similar pattern to yours Suzanne as it settles down after a mile or so. I guess that's why the first mile often seems hard. I know that being tired really affects it and some days its reasonably low just because I've had more sleep.

Purpletoes that’s an amazing achievement so soon after giving birth. You will definitely improve on that next time.

Familygerms

the benefits of running are not all physical. I took up (and continued) running mainly because of the huge benefit to my mental well being, although the physical benefits have been brilliant too. I get such a sense of peace, calm and simple deep happiness during and after a run. I suspect most of my miles are physically junk but almost none of them are mentally

That is exactly how I feel! Grin

Keyser loving all the wildlife you run into pun intended nothing so exotic here. I do have to dodge cows occasionally and nutter dogs that want to try and trip you up.

suzannecaravan · 16/09/2015 16:32

dogs that want to try and trip you up

I think often the intention is to get the human to play with the them, sometimes I feel a bit mean just carrying on running when the dog looks all hopeful that I might fancy a quick game of chase

Loueytb3 · 16/09/2015 17:22

I never know what to do Suzanne - stop or carry on. I had one encounter this summer where the owner of a small dog saw me running towards them and said "now we are in trouble". Said dog chased after me and stopped dead in front of me before turning round in circles like a lunatic. It wasn't responding to it's owners at all. I carried on and the little bugger did it again. I nearly went flying. I wasn't best pleased.

Anglaise1 · 16/09/2015 17:51

My border collie is always trying to trip me up!
Hope your cold goes soon Louey, not long before the tapering starts and you will have done all the hard work for your marathon training.
Suzanne I'm sure if you did some intervals you would find your heart rate/lung capacity would increase as well as your speed Grin
I checked Strava for the details and my HRM showed that I went up to 199 during the intervals last night, but most of them were around 175 which is about right. Resting heart rate around 40.
6.44 rather slow miles this morning, actually felt quite achey after last nights intervals which were hard (4 x 300m, 4 x 600m, 2 x 200m) at around 15kph.

suzannecaravan · 16/09/2015 18:08

I've had one or two encounters like that Louey mostly the owners sort of control the dog...but there is sometimes an underlying feeling that the dog's right to do as it pleases comes before the rights of other humans to not be inconvenienced by dogsHmm

Often the owner gets out of the way but the dog has a look of 'I'll show her who's boss' and it forces me to get out of it's way!

Some owners seem to have an attitude of 'if you want to do mad things like running....well then you're just going to get whats coming to you' Confused

I know it makes sense Anglaise I'm thinking about fitting in some sort of shorter faster runs just as soon as the current bout of pita is gone, surprisingly it's quite a lot better :)

cinnamongreyhound · 16/09/2015 20:21

Or you have those really mad people who run with their dogs suzannecaravan, then you get some really funny looks!
