3.4 miles yesterday with my friend on her bike yesterday. We thought we were in Rocky we are a bit nuts. Makes 359.03.

Pink can't you do one longer run and cut the other two runs down? I do parkrun, long run and club run of about 5 miles each week. Though at the moment long run is about 5/6 miles.... need to up my game.

pinkoneblueone · 08/09/2015 19:25

Thank you :) what distance would you suggest as my shorter runs? sorry i'm so new to all this but don't want to injure myself in the process

you are all putting me to shame as i am assuming those figures are miles covered but over how long?

Anglaise1 · 08/09/2015 20:12

Welcome to the thread Pinkone - I agree with Halle, you would be better doing one slow run building up to 10 miles, and shorter ones of around an hour, but with some speedwork to get your heart rate up. 30 minutes slow warm up for example, then intervals (6 x 200m then build up to more) or something like 30 seconds hard running, then 30 seconds walking, repeated. You won't get so bored.
10.2 miles from me, dog running and club session, just a long run, no intervals tonight after the racing at the weekend - all stiffness now gone!
369.23

HalleLouja · 08/09/2015 20:23

I forgot about intervals. I try to do those if I can make club on the right day.

cinnamongreyhound · 08/09/2015 20:30

Well done Anglaise1 and yay for sorting your gi problems.

Sorry you felt rubbish OhOneOhTwoOhThree, glad it went quickly though.

17k is still a decent distance KeyserSophie and I'm sure you will kick arse in your race.

Have to say your comment about 20 being really hot made me smile too familygermsareok Smile

Sorry to hear about your pita suzannefollowmyvan.

Also agree pinkoneblueone, just one long run and increase by a mile every week or fortnight. Keep the other two 3-6miles and one for speed is the general thinking. The distance at the bottom is the thread total for the month so feel free to add to it when you run and welcome.

5.5 enjoyable miles with my dogs and three non doggy runners, was quite speedy for a social run.

374.73

runtothehills · 08/09/2015 21:33

Is this the same PITA as before or a new one Suzanne? Hope its short lived.

Welcome pink, well done on your longest distance myblack. What's an "unreal" session emummy?!?

No jostling with the royals today, but a lovely bluebird day up Lochnagar. 12 miles, a lot more gentle paced that Saturday's exploits and able to stop this time and enjoy the view Grin.

386.73 (thanks for adding my last miles emummy x)

lastqueenofscotland · 08/09/2015 22:13

16.57 all in over last 24 hours.
Shattered!
403.3

suzannefollowmyvan · 08/09/2015 22:17

My pita feels the same, but it's focused on a different side, an??d with the added frisson of twinges in my sciatic nerve.
Pita 2.0
??Weird how the pain / discomfort is there at the start of the run and yet doesn't get worse as the run progresses.
I mean you'd think it would just get worse and force you to stop quite quickly but instead it seems to ease off or fade into the background about 7 miles in??Confused

suzannefollowmyvan · 08/09/2015 22:19

rogue question marks invaded my postShock

emummy · 08/09/2015 22:19

Oops runtothehills, I should really check before I hit post! It should of course have said interval, not sure how I got to unreal! Am a bit sleep deprived at the moment, maybe that's it. Lochnagar sounds lovely

RedLentil · 08/09/2015 22:22

Thanks everyone for the kind welcome!

5.75 from me makes 361.38, but mistiming the start meant I got to the school run changed out of my running gear, but purple in the face and gently steaming ....

Still, the run was great considering I was tired before it started. Once I got going, the nice day was enough to keep the legs ticking.

keysersophie - the iron thing does have a coeliac link, especially if your calcium is low too.

RedLentil · 08/09/2015 22:25

409.05 - sorry. Making a hames of using the mobile site.

pinkoneblueone · 08/09/2015 22:50

Thank you for your advice. I have run another 6 miler this evening bringing my total for Sept up to 18.59 as i had to give one day a miss last week as my legs ached so much. but WOW 403 miles and we're only 8 days into the month :O how many miles do you do a day???

lastqueenofscotland · 08/09/2015 22:59

Pink if I run to and from work I'll do 11.

My long runs are about 16 miles and if I race it will be 10k. Interval sessions will be 5

A lot of my midweek runs to / from work are junk miles though.

karatekimmi · 09/09/2015 04:45

Waves and smiles like a lunatic - an awesome 1.5 miles from me!! I needed to check I could run without peeing myself before doing c25k with my club and I can!! Whoop whoop!! So club run tomorrow and then parkrun on Saturday!!

410.55 + pinks 18.59 429.14 I think - baby brain and 4am feeding doesn't make the sharpest brain!!

Anglaise1 · 09/09/2015 06:24

A lot of my midweek runs to / from work are junk miles though.
Last Queen, don't be so sure. I thought my dog- running-every-day often twice a day miles as well as 'proper' runs were junk and doing more harm than good, but the HM I've just done is the first time I've felt strong at the end and have actually progressed from my first race 2 years ago. I'm sure it builds up some sort of endurance.
Suzanne do you think it might be a tendinitis in the bum like mine? Mine never really hurts when I run, though, just when I sit down on a hard chair or drive.

OP posts:
cinnamongreyhound · 09/09/2015 06:31

pinkoneblueone that mileage is for the whole thread, not personal milage so lastqueenofscotland hasn't run 403, we all have jointly for the month Smile

Purpletoes · 09/09/2015 07:08

6.2 from me last night. Was a lovely run with my club. Hopefully just a quick run Thursday then first race in 2 years on Sunday! Eeek! **

435.34

suzannefollowmyvan · 09/09/2015 07:47

??I don't personally consider any of my miles to be 'junk'...the more you practice the more you improve, neuromuscular coordination, as well as all the metabolic and cardiovascular benefits :)

I suppose running while injured would be counterproductive. Or just running in excess of your ability to recover or recuperate....is that what you mean by 'junk miles' Lastqueen ?

Anglaise it does feel like the sacro-tuberous ligament problem that I had before, think I may have sparked it off carrying something awkward up the stairs, I could feel at the time that my lower back didn't like it

Should calm down so long as I don't do anything else to annoy it.

KeyserSophie · 09/09/2015 08:33

suzanne hope the butt ache disappears soon

"junk miles" means miles that dont do anything to further your training objectives (i.e. usually easy paced shortish runs). Everyone does some (because they're really nice and sometimes you just CBA or you want to run and chat) but it's more a recognition/reminder that it's not just all about the distance and not all miles are created equal- for example, for me, it's much better to do 50k and +10,000m ascent than 80k flat, (it's taken me 2 years to realise that-duh) It's not really a disparaging term, more just something runners might refer to, like "Great mileage last week", "Yeah, 20 junk miles in that though. Gotta do some hills this week." Also, for people who are injury prone, or lack time, and who aim to do as low mileage as possible to reach their objectives, they need to be ruthless about eliminating junk miles, which I guess is where they got their name. If you're running for fun, or general weight loss/ fitness are fairly bomb proof and have lots of time then they're not really relevant.

Anyway, happy to add 12 miles from this morning (big hill session +1200m) to make 447.34.

Welcome back kimmi. Hope the club run goes well.

FlukeSkyeRunner · 09/09/2015 10:02

Anglaise1 · 09/09/2015 10:07

Keyser when I followed my coach's training pattern, 3 x a week, I didn't improve. It was only by doing 'junk miles' and running twice a day as well as the intervals (we don't have 10000m ascent here) that I improved. I think most training plans for ultras include sequential running/running walking a often as possible.
I was really worried that my 50 miles a week over the summer, many of which were 'junk miles' would have adversely affected my speed, but surprisingly not at all. I think Matt Fitzgerald is an advocate of running as much and as often as you can and says that magical things can happen when you squeeze two runs in on one day.

lastqueenofscotland · 09/09/2015 10:15

I'll cross my fingers they aren't junk then! I'll push myself on the run home but the run in really is a jog.
Can't run in for the rest of this week due to meetings anyway!

Loueytb3 · 09/09/2015 10:31

Adding in 23.65 miles from the past three days. Got a new pair of trainers this morning. Very excited, put them on (thought they seemed a little roomier than normal) and walked in them to work. It was only when I took them off that I realised that they are both missing the insoles. Am furious. I bought them from sweatshop through ebay. I've sent them a message but it's such a PITA. I need to use them at lunchtime. Our office is doing a charity "round the world" event this week and they are running various activities to log steps. I've signed up to the vertical rush, which is a fancy way of saying race up the stairs to the top of our building and back again (12 floors).

In other news, I don't think I've mentioned on here before but I had been waiting for a cardiology appointment ?? I promised DH that I would get checked out before I did another marathon and also because I'd been having dizzy spells. It turns out I have a heart murmur so I had to have an echo, 24hr ECG and blood tests. Finally got to see the cardiologist yesterday and I've been given the all clear. One of my valves is slightly narrow but not enough to be concerned about. The cardiologist is a marathon runner so was extremely sympathetic and supportive of me running, unlike DH (and DM) who thinks I am going to drop dead and am completely selfish for doing a marathon.

473.59

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 09/09/2015 10:39

6.4 from me this morning (slightly more, but I stopped for a loo break and didn't re-start my garmin properly afterwards).

Good to see you kimmi Smile

Good to hear you got the all-clear Louey, which marathon are you hoping to do?

479.99 rounded to 480 because of my extra few 100m Grin
