probably better to have a running schedule that works for you rather than fit in with some challenge or other?

Anglaise1 · 12/11/2015 16:01

Cinners I run every day, minimum 5 miles, sometimes a lot more, around 50 - 60 miles a week in total. But I didn't do that all at once. i started running rather than walking my very active border collie back in the summer and haven't gone back to walking. I have the time to run like that too. But I'm really looking forward to having a few days off this weekend. I think it is much better to do like Suzanne, do longer every other day and have a day off, but I guess you can't because of the daily challenge. As long as you can vary the running with cycling and walking you should be fine. As others have said, you run the risk of getting fed up with running if you HAVE to do it every day.
10 miles from today, going away for a long weekend (birthday treat) to Toulouse so will be doing lots of walking and maybe one run. Looking forward to a rest as legs hurting after yesterday's race.

tbh I think it would be better (for any given mileage) to do more frequent shorter runs (not necessarily every day though) I run every other day because I like to alternate strength training days with endurance training days

It's difficult to know what's optimal because there are so many factors to consider and they vary from person to personConfused

FiftyNineOhEight · 12/11/2015 17:00

I aim to run 4 days a week, and do yoga once a week. Even that is a struggle sometimes - weekends are not usually a problem, but it's hard to carve out time during the week.

Having said that I squeezed in 2 miles this afternoon Smile.

I meant longer than 5km, not necessarily the impressive distances you clock up every other day Suzanne Blush
I either run with the dog and BBC podcasts, with friends or with the club, and different routes, distances and speeds, so that stops me getting bored with running.

suzannecaravaggio · 12/11/2015 18:44

oh, I think I'm with you Anglaise 5k runs are a bit too short to have much of a training effect?

Anglaise1 · 12/11/2015 20:41

I read somewhere that to get benefits running 20 min is the minimum, but I can't remember where I read that! 20 mins is usually the warm up for me, after that I enjoy the run!

Halle yes! it's the Dirt Half just outside Leighton buzzard. Well spotted :) are you there too?

suzannecaravaggio · 12/11/2015 21:51

I read somewhere that to get benefits running 20 min
ha, me too, although I feel as if I read it at least 20 years ago

in days of yore when I had small children opportunities for exercise were rare!

familygermsareok · 12/11/2015 23:33

Adding 4.6 from two runs earlier this week.
Am away with a group of friends for the weekend tomorrow to the Lake District, running stuff all packed Grin
Well done on your race Anglaise, your DP too. Maybe chasing you was good motivation for him Wink
Good luck to everyone racing this weekend.
Will be interested to hear what the Illuminator is like run and emummy. I would have entered that if I hadn't been going away, although I wouldn't be able to run it currently anyway.

KeyserSophie · 13/11/2015 03:51

Adding 7.5 from this morning to make 554.2. Went out intending to do mainly climbing, got half way, thought "Ugh, hate climbing. I'll run back on the catchwater". Got halfway back and thought "Ugh, not enjoying running this morning- I'll climb back over the hills."

Sirzy · 13/11/2015 11:34

Anyone run in Hoka shoes? I am thinking the look quite comfy but trying to decide whether it's worth the trek to the nearest place that sells them to try a pair!

suzannecaravaggio · 13/11/2015 11:38

Yes I have a few pairs
Altra are also very good if max cushion and zero drop is your thing

HalleLouja · 13/11/2015 12:36

Lego I am not doing it but a few from my club are. Good luck on Saturday.

Sirzy · 13/11/2015 13:24

Thanks Suzanne. I think I will go and try some!

suzannecaravaggio · 13/11/2015 15:15

one thing I like Sirzy is they come with 2 types of insoles, a thicker and a thinner one so you can adjust the fit

I feel as if they've helped me counteract the physical stress of longish runs but it's impossible to know for sure how much difference they've actually made.

11 from me
565.2
windy and quite sunny
I think it may soon no longer be shorts and t-shirt weather

cinnamongreyhound · 13/11/2015 17:34

Chilly here! I decided to skip my run as I ended up in hospital with ds3 until 1am. He's doing well but consultant want to check a few things and was planning to give him iv antibiotics, thankfully thugs didn't quite go to her plan and they did a blood test first which came back showing that although has an infection it's not a raging one so oral ab would be fine. I'm so glad they are looking out for his remaining kidney but I could do without the stress and missed sleep!!!!

emummy · 13/11/2015 19:38

Oh cinnamon, glad he's ok, it's very worrying when things like that happen. Hope he shakes off the infection soon. Chilly here too, psyching myself up for tomorrow night's race. The forecast looks like being 3 degrees and dry at the bottom of the hill - a wee bit older at the top I imagine! Best wishes to ds3

Blatherskite · 13/11/2015 21:17

Hi all,

I've had a sucky few months of running but am working hard now to get my fitness back.

Just going to try to catch up here....

FiftyNineOhEight · 13/11/2015 21:23

(((cinners))) hope DS is OK Flowers

custardcreamdreams · 13/11/2015 21:46

Hope your ds is ok and recovers soon cinnamon Flowers

Purpletoes · 13/11/2015 23:04

cinners hope your DS3 feels better soon. Wet and windy volunteering be for me in the morning. Currently enjoying a night out as granny is here for the weekend.

stilllearnin · 14/11/2015 09:05

Hello I am a little out of the loop - but love to cinnamon hope you're bearing up.

I am starting to find my stride again and have a total of 8 miles to add from this week over 2 runs. I have a lost a stone on the 'divorce diet' and blimey it is easier without that. (I have plenty left so don't be at all concerned). I did 5 miles today and only paused to check the breathing of a rough sleeper - he had running shoes on sticking out the bush and I feared it was one of you lot keeled over! He was breathing and warm enough - but fighting the urge to go back with some sweet tea.

573.2

Sirzy · 14/11/2015 09:38

2.5 miles this morning. Very slow as the ground is covered in soggy leaves and didn't fancy going flying in them!

575.7

cinnamongreyhound · 14/11/2015 11:27

He's pretty much his usual self now thank you, antibiotics for week.

Glad to hear that the weight loss is helpful stilllearn, still sucks though. Good for you stopping for the sleeping man, think I'd have been a bit wary!

Horrible parkrun this morning, had pain in my sternum that made it difficult to breathe Sad ran there but not back 579.2
