Beach runs sound lovely Fluke, especially considering the weather now. Has been vile here from yesterday and don't think it's to let up most of the week. It's that bad I'm considering hitting the gym for the treadmill instead tomorrow, something I've never done.

6.2 today 427

lastqueenofscotland · 09/11/2015 22:10

5.5 early miles. Nearly hit snooze and vv glad I didn't 432.5

cinnamongreyhound · 09/11/2015 23:51

4 canicross club miles from me 436.5

KeyserSophie · 10/11/2015 06:11

4.5 miles commuting to the gym and back to make 441

KeyserSophie · 10/11/2015 06:12

Argh- bold fail. New total is 441

LaDiDah1 · 10/11/2015 09:08

Trying to get back into shape after baby no.1. What trainers should I buy for running and gym workouts?

emummy · 10/11/2015 10:33

Slow run in the woods, nice mild day. Taking it easy ahead of Saturday night's adventure!

LaDiDah1 I don't know about gym shoes, but for running, well, how much running will you do? If you are starting from scratch, say doing a c25k, then the exact trainers aren't too important to begin with until you start doing more miles. When you are running more, then a trip to a running shop for a good pair of trainers that suits your gait is a good plan as you will feel more comfortable and ideally be less prone to injury.

444

custardcreamdreams · 10/11/2015 15:35

I wear the same ones for the gym that I do for running. I'm not in the gym often enough to justify spending money on a different pair of trainers and when I do go I run down.

On that note 2.2 from the run down and home to the gym

446.2

MyBlackCat · 10/11/2015 18:28

3.5 miles from me - slow, legs still feel dead from the weekends efforts.

449.7

Anglaise1 · 10/11/2015 19:59

Just a little dog run of 5.6 this morning due to 13km trail race tomorrow morning. Am racing with new DP, he is very competitive although I think I'm faster, so it will be interesting!

2 miles from me tonight. My quickest yet (since I started again) too! Felt good.

457.3

LaDiDah I'd wear my running trainers in the gym too. Mine are Asics, but there are several makes that are good. Have you run before? Have you any idea if your feet tend to roll in or out?

lastqueenofscotland · 10/11/2015 21:26

4 miles of intervals and jogging to intervals. Feel great for it.

461.3

Deliaskis · 10/11/2015 22:39

3 from me tonight. Been a bit stiff and achy since 10k, so good to get moving again. Now, stupid question coming up, but since I got new running tights about ten days ago, I feel great running in them, like I don't wobble and am more firm and springy somehow. Is it reAlly possible that something as basic as running tights could make me run better, or is it all in my head? Feel v stupid asking as I am audit must be in my head!

464.3

Deliaskis · 10/11/2015 22:41

Once didn't mean to say audit, sure would make more sense..

HotDogJumpingFrogAlburquerque · 10/11/2015 23:12

Well, I have a pair of running tights that I definitely think I run faster in. They're 11 years old.

With a hole in the bum cheek.

Which is getting slowly bigger. Blush

KeyserSophie · 11/11/2015 02:20

Adding 6.5 from this morning to make 470.8. Mixed my route up a bit to incorporate a bit of the race route from Sunday- one of those loops where I always wondered where it went but never actually checked it out.

Re gym trainers vs. run trainers, it kind of depends what you're doing in the gym. For heavy lifting try to avoid very cushioned shoes as it impacts your stability and if you're doing Zumba etc. then runners arent ideal as they dont have much lateral stability. That said, my runners have doubled as gym shoes for most of my adult life (i do now have a pair of lifters, but only since I started wearing Hokas for running as they are super-cushioned), and I'm still alive so I wouldnt worry too much.

Re "magic leggings" it's probably in your head, but as we run as much with our heads as our legs, it is a "real" benefit. Hotdog I have a pair of Adidas cycling shorts that I got for a fiver in the bargain bucket at Bicester about 10 yrs ago. They are seriously on their last legs now, but I cant bear to part with them.

cinnamongreyhound · 11/11/2015 07:32

Good luck with your race and dp afterwards Anglaise1!

I think if you feel less bouncy and more held in perhaps it makes a slight difference Deliaskis but running is at least 50% mental so yes they are helping you run better Grin

I so needed a day off yesterday, was a hideous day anyway but 5 days running in a row is enough for me. I saw my running buddies while out walking the dogs and had a fleeting moment of wishing I could join them, then went home and ate!

custardcreamdreams · 11/11/2015 08:52

Good luck with the race Anglaise, sounds like an interesting one running with your dp. That would bring out my competitive side Grin

My shin on my right leg has been bugging me a bit the last month and more. It's not agony but gets a bit achy and sore to push on one spot on the side of the bone after running. No other symptoms - no bulging/hotness/redness or anything else I've read to look out for. Is it shin splints? I've never had it just on one leg before, had it once when I increased my mileage too much but it was both legs and very obviously shin splints. I'm gonna have to rest for a while aren't I?

emummy · 11/11/2015 12:10

Final info for Saturday's night trail race arrived today, now a bit excited! There will be a piper at the top of the first hill - poor soul, standing at the top of a freezing hill in the dark! We are being encouraged to tip him as a donation to mountain rescue - liked the advice that notes are lighter to carry than coins!

Purpletoes · 11/11/2015 12:13

5.6 from me. Club run and run to club. It was a steady run not too hard trying to take it easy before race on Sunday.but still in the group I moved up to last week so feeling pretty pleased. Haven't decided if I will run again on Thursday or not. Think I will should give me enough time to recover if I do a short session maybe working on speed.

I have discovered I am good on hills and can overtake people who are faster than me on the flat. So really need to work on upping my speed. Any tips?

anglaise good luck with the race.

Welcome mrsH and. ladidah

476.4

KeyserSophie · 11/11/2015 13:55

purple pump your arms so it feels like it is really exaggerated and you look idiotic (you don't, but it feels like it). That helps you get up hills faster.

Anglaise A belated good luck. Hope you have a great race.

Emummy Love the tip about notes. I did notice that on the last race I did the cans of drink at the little shop on the route were 11 dollars. I'm pretty sure that on non-race days they're 10 dollars, but they figured, rightly, that everyone would give them 20 and tell them to keep the change as didn't want to carry coins.

custard roll everything (quads, calves, ham strings, gluten, IT bands) really well. It has cured pretty much every injury I've ever had but takes about an hour to do it properly.

Sirzy · 11/11/2015 14:21

First run since being ill, only 2.5 miles but I can still breathe now which is a good sign.

478.9

Anglaise1 · 11/11/2015 18:29

Sirzy glad you are feeling better.
Cinnamon enjoy your day off. I'm going away this weekend and am looking forward to NOT running much
Purple not sure where you want to increase speed, but if it is on the flat then intervals, if on hills move your arms as Keyser suggested (little steps too). I'm good on hills but crap on descents so if anyone knows how to run faster down steep trail hills that would be good!
emummy good luck for your race this weekend, the piper would be guaranteed to have me running to the hills I have a strange aversion to bagpipes. We had a hunting horn player today at the 6th and 12th km mark which was quite fun.
10 miles to add from today's race and associated warm up run. I didn't feel great, legs kind of disappeared strangely at around 5km, but managed to finish the 13k in 1h01m, 16th woman out of 107, 185 out of 452 overall. Should really have won my category but missed out by 40 seconds so was 2nd Veteran 2 woman. No ugly trophy this time as they were only awarded to scratch winners and first in category.
New DP finished in 1h11m so not at all bad considering he runs once a week, he is 55, has never done a trail race before and hasn't done a race of any sort in the last 11 years.
Nice homemade soup on arrival, too. Bottle of cider, rose and local rice pudding as race 'present'.

Sounds lovely Anglaise. Well done and I think your dp did well too.

Glad you're feeling better Sirzy

That thought make me want to weep Keyser, I detest the instrument of torture foam roller. I'll try it tonight, thanks.
