Did my 2 mile route yesterday without stopping for the first time - felt great! Going to add a mile tomorrow and see how I do.

My only problem is my knees.... My kneecaps hurt so much during and after the run. I am hoping it is just my body getting used to this type of exercise and Marne because I am carrying extra weight...

Any tips for kneecap stretches? Confused

One day I hope to be adding to the running total in double digits!

64.85

Wtfmummy · 02/11/2015 09:38

Maybe not Marne...

MyBlackCat · 02/11/2015 17:27

Did my first bit of off road training this afternoon 5.15 miles - it was much harder than running on the road, very muddy and my feet got soaked. I've also hurt my foot again, felt it on the downhill bit at the end even though I was trying to go steady, now sat with the frozen peas on it Sad

Hope your foot gets better soon Myblackcat. Getting wet and muddy is part of trail running which is why a lot of road runners don't like it and you have to be very vigilant where you put your feet. Which is why I don't agree with my coach who says that if you can run on the road you can easily run trails! Trails are far more technical than tarmac. I prefer them.
McPie sorry about your running pal. Or not as she turned out to be. If you run with someone you run at their pace, or if one person is faster they run ahead faster then come back, then run off again, come back (at least that is what we do). And we always do a warm up run together of 45 mins at around 9.5kph regardless of our normal pace.
Suzanne in Keyser's race were there a lot of women non finishers? Women are usually more endurant than men in most of the long endurance races I do and few drop out.
9 easy dog running miles today in glorious sunshine, none of the fog that I think has hung over the UK today.

84.46

cinnamongreyhound · 02/11/2015 21:29

Definitely harder MyBlackCat, I do almost all my running in the forest so when I do a road race it feels easier!

suzannecaravaggio · 02/11/2015 23:47

there just seemed to be a lot of DNFs Anglaise hardly surprising though

I'll take lovely cool fog over sunshine for running in any day :o

Whowouldfardelsbear · 03/11/2015 09:43

Wow I've been absent from this thread for so long. I promise to try to check in more often, but I have a total of 30.99 miles to add to October so that makes :

January 2457.51
February 2085.5
March 1674.3
April 1534.65
May 1702.77
June 1560.1
July 1583.59
August 1483.93
September 1588.87
October 1580.75

Total for the year so far: 17,251,97

Also a total of 8.58 over two runs for November = 93.04

emummy · 03/11/2015 11:04

Beautiful sunny day, nice run without big hills for a change! Going to physio again today, back improving so that's good.

mcpie your ex running buddy sounds awful. I quite often train with a woman who kicks my ass in races, but when we train together, we stick together. Otherwise, what's the point?

Black cat trail is harder because you constantly have to adjust your stride and balance. Hope the foot recovers soon. Generally, I find I get fewer "wear and tear" injuries vs. road, but more traumatic injuries (sprains etc).

suzanne There are just massively more men than women in the HK trail running scene. I'm not really sure why as the usual childcare restrictions don't apply. However, was v. happy to see 3 women in the top 10 in this race. Re. the DNF/ time outs, the checkpoint cut offs were quite aggressive which didn't accommodate hikers (most races do) as the final cut off was timed to allow everyone to get on the last ferry out (race is on an island). Also, I think some people probably just underestimated it or hadn't banked on it being so hot. I reckon a few also knew they were gonna DNF to get back for Halloween parties Grin so just figured they'd treat it as a training run and do the first 28k, or they were tired from a big race last weekend. I don't think you can conclude much on men vs women. The numbers aren't big enough and there are just so many factors at play.

cinnamon I was pretty much on the move constantly. My strava "moving time" record said 12:18, so basically I had 10 mins sitting in a stream and then 20 mins in the checkpoints, which included a 10-15 minute break to change shoes and shirt and eat some food half way.

anglaise I think I ran probably 30k, climbed 10k, and scrambled, jog/hiked the rest.

Planning a recovery run tomorrow- my first in November.

runtothehills · 03/11/2015 13:33

Hill running is the same Keyser there is only about 10 to 15% women. I often approach it psychologically as a separate womens race, as the men can be very fast. Though in the longer distances the (faster) women can place well. The benefit is with low female numbers you often place "well". Will place even better when I hit the big FourO Grin

MyCat I love looking at OS maps for new routes. My DD has just started this seasons ski club training which is in an area I've not run in much and I'm already planning routes I can do while she's there Smile.

9 miles today in the crisp frost and beautiful autumn sunshine.

Sorelip · 03/11/2015 19:33

5.3 today. I realised earlier that I've been running for a year now. It's made such a difference to how I see myself and feel about exercise. I love running; a sentence I never thought I'd write!

112.6

Anglaise1 · 03/11/2015 19:37

Yes, podiums are much easier in trail racing for women, especially the trails of 25kms+. And the older you get, the rarer it is to find women. Doesn't your category change at age 39 Runforthehills? Here you become Veteran 1 women (or Masters 1 women as it is now Hmm) from age 39, at age 49 I became Veteran 2 woman, and so on.
Keyser I hope your recovery run went well. I'm not sure I could do a trail like the one you just did, I like shorter ones where I can run most of the way. Did you take walking poles for the ascent or are they banned or not necessary?
10 miles from dog run and club session this evening. Lots of core body strength excercises which really hurt (but are essential especially for trail runners).

Just wow KeyserSophie!!!!!!!

4.2 rubbishy stop start miles from me, went on the club headtorch run which I've stopped going to because they stop lots but they were coming over to where we normally run so would have been rude not to join them! 127.1

HotDogJumpingFrogAlburquerque · 03/11/2015 20:31

2.2miles from me tonight. Felt really good and fast so thought I'd add a bit on to the end of it, but unfortunately my phone didn't track the distance, only the time (sob). Had to map the route when I got back, I thought it'd be further.

129.3

I'm so in awe of all these distances (and terrain!) you're all doing.

This is always the hard bit for me when I start running again, where I'm not fit enough to get good mileage so I need to have patience/faith that if I keep at it I'll get there in time.

familygermsareok · 03/11/2015 21:04

McPie you are so better off without her, that just sounds awful Shock
I like the freedom and headspace I get running by myself. Although I have enjoyed running and chatting with a friend occasionally I definitely need my 'me' time!

Wtfmummy well done on your non stop run Smile. Re knee pain there are lots of possible causes, it's difficult to say, but I would be cautious about increasing your mileage quickly if you are getting pain with what you are currently doing, tempting though it is. The commonest cause of injury is increasing distance too far and too fast. I think your cardiovascular system gets fitter quicker than your musculoskeletal system so you feel able to do more than your body is ready for ( calling suzanne, she knows loads about stuff like this) .

Happy running anniversary Sorelip Smile

2.2 early morning ones from me

Oh thanks I'm flatttered Family but really I'm only repeating 'common running lore' that I've heard/read aboutWink
running (ime) throws up all sort of aches and pains, some of which you can push through and some you cant, everyone runs a bit differently so I suppose the mechanical stress is a bit different for everyone

Deliaskis · 03/11/2015 22:02

A lovely rainy 3.2 for me tonight, I kind of liked the rainy dark night element, felt good. Also new running tights Smile. Anyway, regained my mojo for Saturday's 10k, looking forward to it now.

143.2

lastqueenofscotland · 03/11/2015 22:38

10.9 from me today over two runs. Not run twice in a day for ageeessss and just about glad I did. Just.

154.1

KeyserSophie · 04/11/2015 00:48

Quick recovery run (yeah I know, but better late than never :-)) - 5.2 miles to make 159.3. Realised I actually have another race on Sunday, but it's 24k on a very benign course (net downhill) so my friend and I have agreed to turn up and use it as a training run.

hotdog I know what you mean. You feel like you've run miles and it comes up as 598m or something. It's hard to keep the faith but I find that progress isn't linear and suddenly it all comes together and you feel like Forrest Gump bursting out of his callipers.

wtf Agree with building up distance slowly. Also, many runners have tight IT bands and weak glutes which, combined, can put pressure on the knees. Can do squats/ hill work (just hike up if you can't run them yet) to strengthen your glutes and get a foam roller for the IT bands (look on you tube for instructions).

Purpletoes · 04/11/2015 06:53

keyser congratulations that's an amazing result. You finished it. Looked so hard.

Just 5.5 from me last night. Hadn't ran since Thursday as kids had lots of things this weekend. It was club night and move up week so tried the group above my usual one. Managed it fine although can feel legs a bit stiff today.

Not sure when I will get out again this week as out tonight and having a sports massage Thursday one of the girls at club is training and needs the hours to practice. Yeah. Grin

This weekend OH is off on a boys weekend but one of my BF and her family are coming to visit. They both run so we will be going to parkrun but 1 adult will need to stay with kids and as they are the tourists and not done this one I think it may be me! But will try and get out for a run at some stage.

Race is next Sunday. 10k flat hoping to be around the 60mins.

159.6

MyBlackCat · 04/11/2015 13:38

Good luck with your race purple

I managed to speak to a physio friend yesterday about my foot, he didn't seem too concerned about it so I've just done a 3.5 mile run on the flat road,it felt ok, think I need to stay away from the downhill for a bit Smile

163.1

FiftyNineOhEight · 04/11/2015 16:36

8 damp and misty miles to add here. Quite tired, hadn't had enough to eat before going out and TOTM so I was slow. But I ran.

I second Keyser's foam roller advice. One of my better fitness/running investments Smile
