run to bummer re the light. I have a really small petzl which I carry as a spare. Head torches do seem to be massively temperamental. Mine broke 6k into a 40k race last year. It could be that it's the torch and not the batteries which broke. If you're replacing I massively recommend the Ay-Up for up to 8 hrs. Expensive but rechargeable battery and 2 beams.

family Glad your achilles is improving and that you're enjoying the cycling.

delia I'd do it. If you need to take a few walk breaks, then so be it. Am sure you won't be alone (unless its a country championship or something Grin)

Adding 43.5 to make 1371.6. Race was definitely the toughest I've done, not purely due to the distance (I've only done 50k non-stop before) but due to the hills and the heat (freak 30 degrees and no shade). I almost feel a bit of a fraud adding these as running miles as the opportunities for running were limited to the catch waters and road sections (about 30k total) and the odd 100m here and there. The rest of it was steep climbs and scramble downs. Wanted to quit many times. Sat in a stream for 10 mins at one stage as was so hot. Hit the wall with 5k to go and not really sure how I got through that at all. Anyway, managed it in 12:48 and came 3rd in the veterans, so that was a nice ending. Not doing that race next year!

Looking forward to no races until middle of December so can get back to my training for a few weeks. Will target 200k in November (125 miles) and 10,000m climbing.

Deliaskis · 01/11/2015 08:07

Any thoughts on what I could/should do this week if I can't actually get out as DH is away? I have a couple of exercise DVDs at home, but would welcome any ideas for specific exercises I can do at home that might help.

lastqueenofscotland · 01/11/2015 09:12

Deliaskis assuming you have kids? Could you make it a game with then so who can jump rope the longest/go to the park and race between football goal posts if they have them up, go on a long walk? that sort of thing?

Otherwise I really like the tiffany rothe videos. Xhit daily are good too if they are still around.

Good luck getting the milage in all. I'm not running today but got my next 2 weeks running planned - should be at about 80 miles this time in two weeks fingers and toes crossed noting gets in my way!

FiftyNineOhEight · 01/11/2015 10:00

Well done Keyser, that sounds very mentally tough as well as a huge physical challenge.

Welcome McPie.

I'm starting the new month as I mean to go on. Among for 6-8 miles this morning. Very misty here.

cinnamongreyhound · 01/11/2015 10:35

Welcome McPie, well done on your weight loss and sorry for your running buddy!

Fab KeyserSophie was that 12hrs of being constantly on the go other than your river sitting?

6.3 lovely miles in the forest with 3 dogs and 4 humans for company Grin

6.3

cinnamongreyhound · 01/11/2015 10:38

Also oct total should have been 1534.3 as there was a x post earlier.

Anglaise1 · 01/11/2015 11:06

Welcome to the thread McPie and thans for your mileage, that has pushed our October total up considerably!
Family so pleased your Achilles is recovering. And it's great that you are enjoying cycling, cross training is really excellent to do to improve your running. Are the endorphins the same as with running for you?
Well done Keyser that is a lot of race you did! Just finishing is something, and 3rd Vet (or masters as we are now called) is excellent, you need real endurance for that. I can imagine you sitting in a stream for 10 minutes to cool down, you can't do that on road races! How much of the trail could you actually run? Which 200km race are you entering next year?
10 miles to kick off November, interval session in the woods to prepare for cross country in the new year. I ran 274 miles in October and am not looking to increase that at all, rather decrease.
16.3

emummy · 01/11/2015 11:18

Well done keyser, that's quite an achievement!
10 miles up a hill for me this morning, absolutely beautiful day, makes up for my soaking during the week! It felt ok but my legs have been feeling quite heavy on long ascents, not sure if it's just tiredness. Or time of the month possibly.
26.3

custardcreamdreams · 01/11/2015 12:34

You are awesome keyser, to even finish that, never mind placing third in your age group. I don't know how on earth you run in that heat.

I've went to the park with the dc before Delia and plonked them in the middle with the ball while I've ran around in big circle. Not saying it was particularly successful, dd wasn't happy with it, but it might work with yours :)

Little 4 with sprint intervals to start me off in November

30.3

FiftyNineOhEight · 01/11/2015 12:56

6.3 here - was a bit later going out than planned, and my garmin was conking out so both those things meant that I ran for less time that I'd hoped. But it felt brilliant to be out running again and a good reminder not to get into that downward spiral I've been in of feeling too tired to run, which then makes me feel a bit down, which makes me feel even more tired. I'm sure the rest will have done my body good, but my mind is feeling a lot better for today's run Smile

36.6

suzannecaravaggio · 01/11/2015 15:40

12.6 from me
49.2

suzannecaravaggio · 01/11/2015 16:02

well done on your placing Keyser that race sounds grueling in the extremeShock
I just had a look at the results table there seem to be a large number of DNF's and timeouts...I guess it's normal for that kind of event?
The male/female balance in the older cats is interesting 39-49, 66 men but only 16 women finished.

over 50's is even more extreme-men 28 finished, women only 4

HotDogJumpingFrogAlburquerque · 01/11/2015 16:38

Hullo everyone! I started running again two weeks ago and was hoping to join a thread for some extra motivation and support.

I'm miles off you lot though! Should I wait and join later? I'm only doing 3.5k at a time. Hope to step it up over next 2 months to 10k with some shorter runs during the week.

Maybe I'll join the next thread once I get my distance up a bit. That can be my goal!

suzannecaravaggio · 01/11/2015 16:50

Hi Hotdog please join now, we run a variety of distances for a variety of reasons and we all started out with smaller amount and built up gradually Wink

HotDogJumpingFrogAlburquerque · 01/11/2015 17:15

Okay, Thanks Suzanne

I'm trying to work out how the running total works that you're all posting - is it a monthly aggregate for everyone on the thread? And then a personal (monthly?) total?

McPie · 01/11/2015 17:17

Thanks for the welcome. There are some fab distances going on here!
I'm trying to work on covering distances without stopping and my longest run was 8 miles the other week.
Hills are causing an issue with my pace as almost every run option starts or finishes with one so I have stopped obsessing over it.
Todays run was 7.1 miles so 56.3

cinnamongreyhound · 01/11/2015 18:03

Its cumulative for the whole thread in miles per month HotDogJumpingFrogAlburquerque Smile

Sorelip · 01/11/2015 18:11

Have 8 to add to October total.

1542.3

HotDogJumpingFrogAlburquerque · 01/11/2015 18:20

Thank you Cinnamon Smile

In that case, I have 12k total to add for October.

1554.3

And a paltry 2.5 for November Blush

suzannecaravaggio · 01/11/2015 18:51

Hotdog we are denominated in miles Wink
I make that
1549.76 for Oct
57.85 for Nov

HotDogJumpingFrogAlburquerque · 01/11/2015 19:21

Whoops!

Thanks for fixing it. Gosh I'll really need to get a wiggle on if I have to post the mile distance so I don't let the side down with my even smaller contribution!

runtothehills · 01/11/2015 19:25

Keyser AMAZING effort Star Star Star 30 degrees would be beyond me to run at all, let alone sustain that kind of distance.

Welcome McPie and HotDog all miles welcome!!!

Delia depends on kids ages, I've run whilst they cycle, it's more of an interval session depending on the route you take!! Alternative is some form of HITT at home off youtube.

Have ordered new head torch, Petzl Nao rechargeable batteries and up to 500 lumens, should be able to land aircraft Grin. Will take lightweight spare I used for Mountain Marathon.

5 today in lovely autumn sunshine. Only 1 dog and no humans for company cinnamon Wink

Thanks for adding my October miles lastqueen, good total planned for the next 2 weeks!!

62.85

familygermsareok · 01/11/2015 22:54

Wow Keyser, that sounds really tough, both mentally and physically. What a fantastic achievement, not only finishing in those conditions but coming in 3rd vet as well Star Star Star I hope you enjoy a bit of a rest before your next one.

Thanks Anglaise, it is lovely to be back running again. I don't find the cycling gives me the same endorphin buzz or feeling of deep satisfaction that running does, but on the other hand I don't get the same GI issues and don't have to wait for ages after eating. And whizzing downhill fast is brilliant fun Grin. DH is trying hard to convert me to cycling, I am certainly going to be doing more cross training from now on but my heart will always belong to running Wink

Delia I do Insanity DVDs when I can't get out due to childcare, any HIIT type exercise should be good. Also second building your exercise into a fun game for the kids if they are the right ages. I used to chase mine round play parks being a monster which was surprisingly tiring after a while. I kept jogging round the edge while they hid then sprinted to chase them when they ventured out Grin

Welcome McPie and Hotdog Smile
Your previous running buddy sounds a bit of a nightmare McPie. I nearly always run alone and love the peace and quiet.

McPie · 02/11/2015 08:10

I am so with you on running alone familygermsareok I had never ran before April last year and my 1st run was her fastest pace previously so we just sort of stuck together.
We started training for her half in September and end of August she must have decided I was too slow (? the best I can think of as I still don't know the reason) and started leaving me behind, 4 occasions I can think of. The worst was when I was expected to run around the Pentland hills on my own, I wouldn't have gone if I had known that so I turned back 2 1/2 miles in after watching them turn a corner at the top of a hill without looking back, that's the closest I have ever been to a panic attack.
The personal attack the last time I seen her was the last straw as my mental health was being affected trying to work out what I had done wrong!
Today is my 1st rest day in 36 days so no miles from me, I will be back out tomorrow as I am aiming for 5/7 weather permitting. I hope everyone heading out enjoys their run.

MyBlackCat · 02/11/2015 08:45

Well done keyser Star

I have entered a 15 mile race in February. It's off road, mostly on public footpaths and through farmers fields. It has a huge hill in the first 3 miles Shock I'm having fun designing a training programme, today I'm going to get my OS map out to design some training runs on local footpaths. I'm sure the actual runs won't be as much fun Grin I'm used to running on roads or country park paths at parkrun so this will be something different.
