Emummy well done on the 15 miler, I cant seem to get my head around anything over 11-12 ish miles

Hope your ankle is ok Keyser I used to be prone to going over but mine seem stronger since I started running.

my OH joined me at mile 6 today and ran 5 miles with me, mostly at my pace but he did sprint off a few times, it was fun but amazes me that he can do it.
He's 50, the only running he does is the odd half mile on the treadmill at the gym, he has a bodybuilder physique, too broad and heavy for a runner, but with no training runs 5 miles without breaking a sweat

20 miles from me over the past 2 runs (today and friday)

emummy · 18/10/2015 15:15

Feel fine today stillearnin! Have worked up slowly to this point I guess, think that helps! 10 miles was snog barrier for me, felt amazing to get past that!

Loueytb3 · 18/10/2015 19:21

26.2 from me

Awesome race, can thoroughly recommend it. I really enjoyed it, apart from miles 23-25 which were tough. It went better than planned, I felt really strong most of the way round, I kept thinking I was going to hit the wall but it didn't really happen so I think the training, plus the carb-loading helped. I managed a negative split and a pb of more than 34 minutes - 4:08:57. My optimistic target was 4:10 so I am really really happy. I now think a sub 4hr is achievable.

DH and DCs came to watch after their swimming lessons and I got to see them around mile 21 and then again at the end. Most amused by DS1 yelling "run faster" with around 400m to go. Only two people overtook me after the start and they were the winning men who lapped me. Otherwise, I just picked people off which was very satisfying, particularly the bloke I overtook a second before the finish line.

Keyser - 6+ hours on your feet is brutal, can't believe that ascent! Hope your ankle gets better very quickly.

Suzanne - it annoys me that men can do that!

Still - all those piddly miles add up Smile

emummy - well done! Sometimes the long runs seem very hard and other times they seem like a breeze. I can't always work out why.

Custard - that sounds rubbish. Is there anything they can do other than inject it?

Just need to get the kids to bed and then I will be having a well deserved drink or ten Grin

Stunning performances Keyser and Louey, and brilliant times/results Star Star Star

emummy fantastic on the 15 miles, where did you go for your route??

Am marshalling at 10k next weekend and DH has decided to run it, quite a change of scene for us but glad he's up for it, only been running past few months.

4 miles with my DSis. Torridon tomorrow.

suzannecaravaggio · 18/10/2015 20:30

great result Louey :o
I kept thinking I was going to hit the wall but it didn't really happen so I think the training, plus the carb-loading helped

I take it you didnt consume extra cals/carbs while running?
Did you follow the 'train low-race high' strategy wrt to glycogen storage?

cinnamongreyhound · 18/10/2015 21:18

Well done emummy on your longest run!

Well done KeyserSophie, fab result!

Great stilllearning, it takes a while to get used to early morning running and then it's wonderful, you get that awesome feeling lasting all day Smile

That would really annoy me suzannecavaraggio!

Fabulous Loueytb3! I'm rubbish at negative splits and often get overtaken at the end!

10k today was tough, as tough as I remember from last year even though I wasn't ill or pregnant this time but I did do it 3 mins quicker even if it wasn't sub 1hr as I hoped. And my momento?!? The tiniest mars bar known to man and a bird feeder Hmm

823.4

suzannecaravaggio · 18/10/2015 21:25

That would really annoy me
hehe, well it doesn't really, because he is very supportive of all my 'athletic endeavors' even though I'm not naturally athletic and I think he genuinely admires me for putting in the effort.
I've got some grit, but no talent :o

also it makes me realise that there's no level playing field, yes pretty much anyone can run, but some people have quite a big head start

custardcreamdreams · 18/10/2015 21:39

A bird feeder is indeed a bit random cinnamon and well done.

Hope the ankle recovers keyser and fantastic time.

I really struggled with morning running for a long time stilllearning and used to hate it. I am not a morning person by any stretch of the imagination. Now I've got into the habit I don't mind it at all. Still prefer night time but mornings are good too.

Superb Louey, really amazing time. Enjoy your drinks, very well deserved. Don't think there's much to do with the foot. They said the steroid injections are usually given three times, after that it may possibly come to surgery Shock Think it might be wise to consider a bit more cross-training rather than just running all the time. I do need to work on my strength anyway and I wouldn't mind doing classes for the social aspect. Get a bit bored by my lonesome all the time.

emummy · 18/10/2015 21:46

Louey well done, brilliant running!
runtothehills I went up the Hill of Fare, gorgeous sunrise again, and more wet feet - but the sealskins have arrived, hurray!
Well done cinnamon, love the race goodies! Doing a night trail run next month where there is no medal, but a mug which they fill with a hot drink when you finish!

Purpletoes · 18/10/2015 22:59

Well done on the races keyser cinnamon and louey

Just a 3.1 from me today. Nipped out before Sunday lunch and rugby. Had my DP's mum and sister coming for lunch. So had to be quick.

Just about to read through thread, lots to catch up on!

10 sweaty miles from holidays and 3.1 this morning from me.

839.6

HalleLouja · 19/10/2015 12:27

Well done everyone who has raced this weekend. Louey did you do the pb dance?

Am coming down with something so only did parkrun this weekend. Which makes 842.7.

HalleLouja · 19/10/2015 12:28

Forgot to add I have signed up for Thunder Run next year. I am in a team of 8. Looks like it should be fun.

HalleLouja · 19/10/2015 12:30

PS Louey my club mates who ran in Palma really suffered due to the heat. One of them who usually runs marathons in 3 hours was nearer to 3.30 hours. So Abingdon seems a much better choice. Grin

PPS There is a great Miele outlet place in Abingdon.

Anglaise1 · 19/10/2015 12:43

StarStarLouey and Keyser! Excellent time for your marathon Louey and good for you on the negative split. Keyser I hope your ankle recovers soon and congratulations, 6H14mins that is a lot of running.
Cinners well done on your 10K, I bet you get below and hour soon.
I did my 30km trail race yesterday afternoon, great weather conditions, but tough as there was a good 5 miles of sand (soft, hard and dunes which are bloody difficult to run in) and a cliffs and steps. I did 2H54M and ended up 4th woman overall and 2nd in my category another ugly trophy. Possibly could have done better but I ran too much last week and felt it in my legs, plus had usual GI problems from 21kms onwards. As usual there were a lot of men at the end who I overtook because they started off too quickly.
The female winner was an Ironman triathlete - 'toute sèche' as we say in France, petite and completely dried up like a prune. I thought she was at least 60 but turns out she is the same age as me. She must weigh 20kgs less than me so the sand dunes and steep cliff descents posed much less of a problem for her than someone much taller and heavier like me.
*Suzanne' good for your OH. Men do have a significant advantage in most sports. I like the age/time weighted tables for running times, my marathon time is equivalent to 3H05m in men's times Grin
18.75 miles from the race, plus 10 miles dog running and recuperation this morning.

completely dried up like a prune

I suppose all that time out running in all weathers is bound to take it's toll....yikes am I gonna age 30 years in the next 10 yearsShock Confused

well done on the trail race Anglaise but sorry to hear about the GI issues :(

Sorelip · 19/10/2015 22:47

Lovely sunrise run up small but steep hill! Ddog had fun getting under my feet. Felt very pleased when I beat her on a short sprint at the end!

lastqueenofscotland · 20/10/2015 10:18

Right wisdom needed. Been a bit sore 24 hours or so.. Google says it's my post tib tendon race I've planned my year around on Sunday. Tape up and carry on as I usually do with my crap left knee or actually stop

KeyserSophie · 20/10/2015 12:58

Fantastic result Anglaise. Well done

'toute sèche' as we say in France

That's gonna be me without the thinness. I love the sun. Think I was a reptile in a former life. I will be like the prune to her raisin :-)

LastQueen I would tape up and start, but not be too committed to finishing. Reason I say that is sometimes injuries seem to just disappear during races.

I'm going to test the ankle out tomorrow- PH here so can do a long slow.

Loueytb3 · 20/10/2015 14:41

Anglaise - very well done! Running in sand dunes is bloody hard. An ugly trophy is still a trophy. 'toute sèche' is what my DH thinks I am going to turn into if I keep doing marathons. There were several people from the 100 marathon club at Abingdon and they did kind of look like shrivelled prunes. I sort of see his point, but I am not going to be running as many marathons as that plus I like food too much Grin.

LastQueen - I would do the same as Keyser. My knee had been very niggly in the few weeks leading up to the marathon. I reasoned that the taper would give it some rest but I had no idea how it would be in the race. As it turned out, I didn't feel it at all. My back, on the other hand was sore. I know how frustrating it must be!

Keyser - fingers crossed the ankle holds out.

Emummy - do you run with a head torch when you go out that early, or is it light enough? There have been some amazing sunrises recently, it must be magical to be out there.

Halle - actually, it was damn near perfect marathon weather on Sunday. Sorry to hear about your clubmates - must be hard when you haven't trained in that temperature. PB dance?? If anything, it was a PB hobble. Thunder Run looks cool - are you doing that with your club?

Cinnamon - well done on the quicker 10k, even if it did feel harder. Did they give you a mini-mars bar? Meanies.

Suzanne - I did a combination of carb-loading and taking on fuel during the race. I think they both helped - the carb-loading gave me the energy from the start and then I had 4 gels during the race to boost my energy reserves. My faster mile was at mile 19 after I'd had a gel at mile 18. Plus I had jelly babies handed out by random locals and some lucozade at mile 14. So basically I was eating most of the way round Grin. I didn't do the low carb beforehand but I do at least a couple of runs a week first thing in the morning before I've eaten which apparently has the same effect (burning fat).

A slowish 3.1 on the treadmill from me, legs are pretty good considering.

879.46

emummy · 20/10/2015 14:46

Louey it's just light enough to to be ok. However, am doing a night race next month and my new head torch has just arrived! Am looking forward to a nighttime run with it this week - although am a bit nervous too about running through woods in the dark!

suzannecaravaggio · 20/10/2015 16:50

11 miles from me 890.46
dont any of these wrinkly marathoners use sunscreen?

I am currently using (face) neutrogena factor 70 as a base with avene factor 50 mineral sunscreen over the top

custardcreamdreams · 20/10/2015 16:55

Is there like, some sort of book, you can learn about nutrition and longer runs? I would eventually like to consider a marathon once dd starts nursery and I've time to train but am clueless about the fuelling part.

7.5 inspired by all you off-road runners I took a rural route up to the woods and lake. I didn't quite realise how steep the hills were up to it. 2 miles of high gradient hills near killed me and I'm not ashamed to admit I did have to stop and walk on occasion. Utmost respect to you hill/fell runners, I don't know how you do it. The views were nice at the top though and it was lovely to see the woods all changing colour.
