Anyone up up for a June walking challenge?

Had one going for April and I think it helped a bit.

Basically anything you like once it gets you walking more than you are currently doing!

I have a Fitbit and am aiming for 10,000 steps a day.

I also use MapMyWalk and have a loop I do that is 4km. For the first week I am aiming to do that every day. After that I will increase.

I read on another thread that 15,000 steps a day is needed for weight loss so I'm aiming to get to that by the end of the month.

Hoping for some company again!

Oh how annoying! I feel your pain, WhoKnows.

CiderwithBuda · 13/06/2015 12:34

Great to see new people. And oldies of course! Grin Not that I am saying any of you are old you understand! In fact I would bet on you all being younger than me!

Anyway - I didn't walk Thursday or yesterday.

But a friend texted me this morning and asked me to go out with her so I dd. Was glad as I'm not sure I would have otherwise! No reason other than laziness!

Did 35 mins - 3.6 k. Should reach my 10,000 steps today. Haven't this week except Wednesday. Am at 42 active minutes today. About to head to garden centre with DH now so will get steps up but not sure about active minutes.

WhoKnows - I did that last week - went to Sainsburys and left fitbit charging. Did the whole park as far away from the shop as possible too!

Morning all.

10,922 steps and 42 active minutes for me yesterday.

Not sure if I will manage a walk today.

Have a nice Sunday everyone.

Hello all , 11742 and 33 active minutes yesterday , should have been more but I was offered a lift back from somewhere instead of the walk I had planned to do , ooops !

Today should be ok , It is a couch to 5k day today so 7512 and 47 active minutes so far .

Hope all is ok with everyone .

OurGlass · 14/06/2015 13:53

Hello, just wondering what Fitbit everyone recommends? Thanks

LondonHuffyPuffy · 14/06/2015 18:10

I did 20,363 steps, 164 active mins today. 14.39km. Weekly total of 112,642 steps, 843 active minutes. Pretty chuffed with that effort.

I think I need to amend my stride length on my FitBit dashboard though. MapMyWalk says the same walk was just over 21km Confused
I don't know which is more accurate?

OurGlass I have the most basic FitBit Flex. It just tracks steps, distance, calories and active minutes. The more expensive/ sophisticated ones track heart rate as well. I like my Flex. It is small and unobtrusive. Oh, it tracks sleep too but I keep forgetting to put it into sleep mode at night!

Howlongtillbedtime · 14/06/2015 18:15

Wow ! London that is good going , I really want to get 100k over a week , I think that is going to be my next mission .

Ourglass I have a fitbit one , I prefer it because I can clip it onto my bra and forget about it . I don't like anything on my wrist and I think it is probably more accurate as I gesticulate a lot when I am talking , especially after a couple of glasses of wine Grin

LondonHuffyPuffy · 14/06/2015 19:39

Thanks, Howlong

I tested mine with arm waving. It makes no difference. I think your whole body has to be moving for it to work

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 14/06/2015 20:01

Low scores this weekend for me, day out with friends that involved next to no walking ysterday meant 7381 steps and no AMs.

Today I have been to a PYO farm with DD and strolled to the sports centre and back, 8,679 and 31 AMs. So my weekly total is right down again. But I've had a lovely weekend, so I don't mind Smile. My legs had got pretty tired and achey by Friday night, so it has been nice to have a break

London - well done, that's a massive total. I use the Strava app (when I remember) to map my walks and it doesn't correlate very well with Fitbit for mileage, I need to investigate adjusting the Fitbit too. Problem is consistency for me, sometimesI march along, other times I stroll really slowly with DD or a friend cos we're chatting.

LondonHuffyPuffy · 14/06/2015 20:14

Thanks! I need to properly calculate my stride length. Not quite sure how to do that! The internet is confusing me greatly!

LondonHuffyPuffy · 14/06/2015 20:15

Too many ! There, sorry

Howlongtillbedtime · 16/06/2015 06:51

Good morning all , yesterday was a couch to 5k day so another good day . I managed 17572 steps and 105 active minutes . I have mondays off work so it always a busy day . Back to work today so I am going to have to try and get a walk in at lunchtime to get the steps up .

London that is interesting about the arm waving not making a difference , I just assumed it would . I still have a weird wrist thing so the one works better for me but I do like the wrist one that tells you who is ringing you or texting you .

whoknows I always struggle more on the weekend which has surprised me , I always assumed that we were pretty busy on a weekend but clearly not so much .

Good luck to all today .

CiderwithBuda · 16/06/2015 10:12

Hi all. Struggling with motivation at the moment.

Keep finding other things to do rather than walk.

Not good! Not helped by th fact it doesn't take much to trigger my foot/leg hurting. Went into town to meet a friend for coffee yesterday and although I wore sandals that the chiropodist stuck orthotic insoles in, my leg really hurt when I came home.

I'm back at chiropodist today.

Also bought new trainers yesterday which should help. Although I really don't want to have to wear trainers all the time! Currently trying to figure out what I can wear on holiday next month.

Will try to get out for walk later.

Cider I hope you have had a better day today

I have managed to get over the 10k but only 10799 and 68 active minutes .

LondonHuffyPuffy · 16/06/2015 21:31

It's no wonder you're not feeling motivated if walking is causing you pain, Cider. How about little and often rather than pushing yourself too much at the moment?
I walked to work yesterday morning, which was 10km. I did not feel epic after that! 16,508 steps and 113 active minutes for the day. That included a very slow walk to the tube in the evening.

Today I did several shorter walks and still got 15730 steps and 120 active minutes. 7000 of those involved a stroll round Southwark Park and along the river a bit this evening. I think I'll do a big walk once or twice a week with short but frequent walks on the other days

have adjusted my stride length and distance now accords more or less with MapMyWalk

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 16/06/2015 22:50

Sorry to hear about the foot/leg pain Cider. I wear orthotics when I can (used to wear them full-time but don't always need them now). I find that if they're even slightly out of position they make things worse not better, can you adjust them at all?

London - sounds like a good plan, I was knackered by Friday having walked around 15k steps every day that week, also it was easier to fit in with DS being away, back to normal routine this week and more walking to get places. but less free time for extra walks. One long one and frequent short extra ones seems more realistic.

So, yesterday I fell a bit short of targets with 11,559 and 49 AMs

Today was better with 13,339 and 60 AMs. All just normal, necessary journeys, no extra.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 17/06/2015 23:04

12865 and 21 AMs today, all made up of short necessary walks.

CiderwithBuda · 18/06/2015 22:21

I'm back!

Had an interesting podiatrist visit. All going fine and she asked me to do some calf stretches. One where you stand with one leg in front of the other and bend front leg and then back leg. Hard to describe! Anyway - my back leg would not bend! Ankle just would not let it.

Turns out one of the muscles running along my calf just doesn't do what it is meant to and is really tight. Both legs. She got an osteopath to come an have a look and she oohed and ahh-ed and poked about.

That muscle is definitely not helping!

Anyway - had an osteo appointment today and she worked on it and I'm going back in a couple of weeks. Have some stretches and exercises to do to help.

Feeling more motivated again funnily enough. Joined Slimming World yesterday and went for a walk today and rejoined a toning place I used to use. So did a session there. Booked in again tomorrow.

So hit my 10'000 steps today and 42 active minutes.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 18/06/2015 22:36

Good that you're getting some treatment Cider and you have exercises to help.

Slack day here (well, majorly busy day actually, I have been in charge of 6 different children as well as my own at various points since school pick up).

9453 steps and 0 AMs Blush. Well, I walked to school (10 mins), stopped and chatted for 10 mins before walking home, another 10 mins, then it was the same this afternoon except I stopped for a meeting at school). Went out to post a letter at lunchtime. All other journeys were too long for walking.

LondonHuffyPuffy · 18/06/2015 22:42

Well that's all major progress, Cider. Glad the osteopath and podiatrist are helping. What's the toning place? Does it work?

You're doing well, WhoKnows

I did 16694 and 124 AMs yesterday, 16087 and 134 AMs today. Pleased with that. 65117 in total this week with 491 AMs

LondonHuffyPuffy · 18/06/2015 22:46

Wait! There was a whole sentence more in my last post!

I meant to say, you're doing well, WhoKnows. There are always going to be days when life gets in the way of stuff

Howlongtillbedtime · 19/06/2015 06:32

Morning all

cider that sounds promising , must be a relief to know what is going on and that something can be done .

Wednesday I did 10627 and 45 active mins and yesterday I managed 17428 and 109 active minutes . My next aim is to get 100k steps in a week . Not sure how long it will take me to get there but I like having a goal to aim for .

The days I am not doing couch to 5k I think I am going to have to really make myself go for a good walk . Finding the time every day is not always easy though .

LondonHuffyPuffy · 19/06/2015 13:46

Ooh yes you are here as well, Howlong! Hello. Yep, goals are good. I'm on the Mumsnet FitBit group and have crept into the top 10. The leaders do a phenomenal amount of walking!

It is tricky to find the time to do the walks, I agree. I'm aiming to walk home from work tonight, but come 6.00 I'll probably be too knackered

Howlongtillbedtime · 19/06/2015 14:15

I get everywhere London Grin

I need to get out and have a walk before school pick up , a kick would be welcome !
