Hi everyone, new thread started! Grin

OP posts:
HalleLouja · 01/05/2015 11:32

I have done intervals a few times. Once on a track we did 100, 200, 300, 400 metre pyramids and back down to 100m. Then we did back up to 400m.

Another time we did 1 mins x 2, 2 mins etc up to 4 mins and then back down to 1 min.

When I did them myself I did 10 minute jog then 5 or 6 sets of 1 minute fast and 2 minutes slow.

Hope that helps.

holmessweetholmes · 01/05/2015 11:39

Thanks HalleLouja - I guess there are lots of combinations you can do! I suppose it depends on what your aim is. I find that if I include some fast intervals it helps to improve my Parkrun times. But I also have some vague idea that it might make my long runs feel easier in terms of pace. Because it's probably not ideal that apart from my intervals I run at pretty much the same speed all the time, however long or short my run is!

familygermsareok · 01/05/2015 14:07

4.8 from me today, much later than usual as DS2 had his school assembly and I couldn't miss his debut as Cocoa Bean no 6 Grin . I couldn't be bothered getting up really early today as I knew I would have time after assembly but I was faffing about and putting off going out for ages and was slow and treacle like when running. I find running first thing so much easier. Hats off to all you evening runners out there!

18.8 + 4.8 = 23.6 ( think we're getting the hang of this now Wink

holmessweetholmes · 01/05/2015 14:14

Same here, Familygermsareok. The longer I put it off, the less likely I am to go at all!

Looking forward to ddog being old enough to run with me. It's a bit time-consuming to have to take him for a walk, come back and then set off for my run!

familygermsareok · 01/05/2015 14:30

Well deserved aggressive , our very own sleb Grin

OhOne Angry at the teenagers. You dealt with them well, but it is horrible. I had this once when a drunk man thought it would be hilarious to run along beside me doing a stupid run and making stupid faces and flappy hands. I just put my head down and ignored him and he soon got bored but it was horrible. I wonder if they would behave like this towards a male runner Hmm

Re Garmins I am not a serious runner but I love mine. I use it mainly to track my mileage and a bit for pace. I have never tried downloading it though I might look up that MN site holmes. ( I am also a huge LOTR geek, love it)

Re intervals I also just make mine up, I do it by markers on the road. There is only one suitable long flat road near me which runs alongside our group of houses and I do fast/slow runs marked by particular junctions/driveways/hedges. The sections are reasonably similar lengths and I find a visual target helps me to keep sprinting. I am no expert though, but this suits me.
Intervals most definitely improve both my overall pace and my stamina for longer runs but I don't enjoy them much and only do in the weeks leading up to a race.

Well done cinnamon, that is great Smile

familygermsareok · 01/05/2015 14:35

Glad I'm not the only one holmes, I love running, but I really had to push myself out the door today and didn't really enjoy it when I was out which is so unusual for me.

holmessweetholmes · 01/05/2015 15:16

Familygermsareok - if you download Garmin Connect on your computer you can then look up the MN group name on there, and search for individual people by their username. Goldberry used to be my MN username but I changed it to my current one because I drool over really like Sherlock Grin.

I'm really looking forward to Parkrun tomorrow. Hope the weather is ok. It's been sunny all day here and it was supposed to rain!

HalleLouja · 01/05/2015 16:00

Holmes my claim to fame is that I used to be friends with Judge Rinder whose wedding ceremony was conducted by Benedict Cumberbatch unless you were swooning over Robert Downey Jnr. I haven't met BC though.

emummy · 01/05/2015 16:17

Big day, did 12.3 miles! Longest run ever. Felt ok, although getting viciously attacked by hail at mile 11 didn't help!

35.9

holmessweetholmes · 01/05/2015 16:35

Cool, HalleLouja! Yes, definitely BC, not RDJ.

cinnamongreyhound · 01/05/2015 17:12

Runrunrun1, I used endomondo on my phone which does very similar to a garmin but tricky to look at while you're running. My friend has a forerunner 10 which is more basic than my 110 but does a lot of the same things. She occasionally struggles to find satelites if we are in the foresty bits but otherwise it's good. I love my 110 but if I had the money I'd have a 210 Grin

At my club training (which I haven't been to for 18 months due to working until 7 Sad) the intervals tend to be increasing and then decreasing holmessweetholmes. So you start with 5 mins at 10k pace, 2 mins 5k pace, 1 min at 800 m pace(full pelt) with recoverys in between and then back up or you do a distance in x time and then each effort you try to get further so you're going faster each time. Endomondo have training plans if you pay for pro too. Can't remember too many as I haven't been for so long! And I think I'm on mn group on garmin connect. Totally with you on the dog front, kills two birds with one stone and I love both canicross running and letting them off to belt around around us running. When I went last night my big dog cried at home for the first 5 mins Sad apparently. Just not 100% of my core strength to have them attached to me just yet!

runtothehills · 01/05/2015 17:18

holmes love my Garmin, use it for distance, pace and for intervals. Even use it as a normal watch (has an alarm clock too), just check you keep it charged.

Sleb status is well deserved aggressive think you can get some freebie promo gear now.

I do intervals usually 1 min run, 1 min walk. Occasionally 2 min run, 1 min walk but find I don't push myself as much as know I've got to go for longer. I also do HITT (FBX or Metafit) which is interval like training but not running.

Well done on the 12.3 emummy is that your last LSR before the HM? And hats off to cinnamon Stars all round.

Pretty knackered this week, been doing as angalaise said and I'm taking it easy, though have itchy feet for this weekend. DSis over so may do a wee run with her.

emummy · 01/05/2015 19:03

I have just got a TomTom runner GPS, loving it! Came in handy today when mapmyrun refused to work in the countryside.
runtothehills my training plan has another mixed pace 12 miler, then 2 hour then a one hour long run still to go. Hm is 4 weeks on Sunday, eek! Have ordered a race time tattoo, so I don't have to employ any thinking while running.

karatekimmi · 01/05/2015 19:23

Lovely to catch up with the slebs and the rest of you mere running mortals Grin

It is with great regret that I am retiring from running for the rest of my pregnancy Sad as spending the whole weekend cripples after doing parkrun, and even a ridiculously slow run on Wednesday being too much I have been forced to graciously decided to stop.

I'll still be living vicariously through you all, oh and I've booked accommodation in Rome for the Rome marathon next year GrinGrinGrin

Anglaise1 · 01/05/2015 19:56

Oooh Karatekimmi, take it easy for the rest of your pregnancy but wow, you have something to look forward to next year with the Rome marathon! Which district are you staying in? I hope it is as well organised as it was this year - I loved the whole thing (except for the lack of portaloos on the course). New Balance sponsored it and I have a lovely rucksack sports bag as well as the official T shirt.
I'm still trying to decide between going for London or doing Paris which is a lot nearer and easier to enter. Or Barcelona...

cinnamongreyhound · 01/05/2015 20:22

Definitely not worth being crippled karatekimmi! Enjoy the rest of your pregnancy and keep us posted Smile

Loueytb3 · 01/05/2015 20:52

10.6 from me this morning, which is the longest I've ran since Christmas. And it was quite painful. Lovely running through the woods though.

Waves to Neeko - DCs are good thank you. As HalleLouja says, DS3 is starting school in September in denial My baby is nearly all grown up. And no, I'm not having any more. How are your DDs??

I've got a Garmin forerunner 220 and I LOVE it. It is in my favourite colour (purple) but I am slightly obsessive about tracking my runs. When I did the London Marathon, i had a spreadsheet with my paces for each of the runs. Not sad at all...

So Brighton will be my second marathon, or possibly my third if I sign up for the women's one in October. I just need to work if its feasible as we are away for 2 weeks at the end of August plus I need to convince DH

I need to go back and read all the advice on interval training as I really need to do some of that.

Karatekimmi - I'm impressed you were running at all while pregnant but try and enjoy the enforced rest! When is the Rome marathon?

46.5

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 01/05/2015 22:06

Evening all Smile

holmes I'm in the MN garmin group - I'm the one in the JDRF top wearing a medal Smile

I have a garmin 110, DH has the 10. We both like them

Get your feet up kimmi - maybe something like swimming might be better?

germs that's exactly what I did - just kept going and ignored. I was more worried that they were off their faces, and therefore a bit unpredictable, than any real fear that they would do anything bad to me. But it was a contrast to the five fit teenagers from the rowing club who had bounced past me earlier in my run. I agree they wouldn't do it do a bloke. I've had similar stick from teenage lads when I've been cycling home from the station - I have a mum bike with a basket on the front and wear a helmet and hi-vis, which they seem to think makes me fair game Hmm

My claim to fame is that I walked past David Cameron yesterday as he was striding through Westminster Smile

Neeko · 01/05/2015 22:06

Karatekimmi - I think you've done great to run this long. Look after you and bump. Smile

Louey - the DDs are great. DD2 is also starting school after the summer and I am also in denial. I'll definitely not be having anymore either. I'm very impressed by your marathon running.

I also log my runs and my pace but I'm an old fashioned girl and use a paper diary Smile.

karatekimmi · 02/05/2015 00:15

Rome is the 3rd of April this year, so we've booked an apartment near the start (DH booked it and I don't know Rome that well sorry anglaise) we plan on having about 10 days in Italy in total, but not sure where to move on to yet.

Only a couple of weeks after London - might as well go for a ballot place Grin

AggressiveBunting · 02/05/2015 02:35

Just adding a quick 4 (Crossfit commute) this morning to make 50.5. Now off on a child free boat party where I will no doubt undo any calorie deficit created thus far today.

Teenagers are like a sub-human species. Fortunately most of them recover from it. My own sister was horrific (booze, boys, smoking, staying out overnight, getting brought home by the police- you name it) - she's a teacher now, so complete reform is possible!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 02/05/2015 07:24

Agressive I keep meaning to ask you what your Crossfit commute is Smile

Yup, I have two teenagers of my own. They are pretty good most of the time Smile but have their moments. We showed them the Kevin the teenager sketch recently and they had the good grace to laugh and poke fun at themselves Smile.

I'm up early for fancy dress parkrun today.

HalleLouja · 02/05/2015 07:49

Louey no more babies here. Wow to two more marathons. I am putting my name in the ballot for London. But almost hoping i don't get a place.

After my first interval session with the club I said I loved and hated it. Only to be told I must be doing it right if I felt that way.

familygermsareok · 02/05/2015 10:10

DS1 is going to become a teen this summer, I keep imagining the Kevin the Teenager metamorphosis happening Sad. Where did my baby go?

What are you dressing up as Ohone? Our parkrun is having an animal theme for its 3rd birthday in a couple of weeks.

My only claim to fame is from many years ago when I was working in the Old Course Hotel in St Andrews during the Dunhill Golf Cup. I refused to allow a guest in through a side door for security. I didn't recognise that he was one of the Australian team golfers ( who went on to win the Cup!) Blush.
He was very gracious about it, but my manager was Shock

7.2 from me , lovely sunny morning though cold. Saw loads of other runners out, was very sociable Smile

57.7

Sazorchard31 · 02/05/2015 10:50

Hello everyone! Marking my place. One run from me in.April, very annoyed at myself but in my defence I've been unwell for a couple of weeks and dh also been away. Have a 10k on Sunday and feel I totally unprepared.

Had a mammoth read to get through all the posts I'd missed!!
