Runrunrun1 · 10/05/2015 21:42

Hello, just a quick one to add on my 3.54 from this morning, so 554.71. Right, off to catch up on the thread.

Runrunrun1 · 10/05/2015 21:46

Amazing Edith that's fantastic!

holmessweetholmes · 10/05/2015 22:05

Wow - well done Edith! And there I was fretting about the 14k I'm supposed to be doing tomorrow Blush.

Deliaskis · 10/05/2015 22:19

Loving spring running too but but of a cold this week means a bit of a poor effort from me, so a very slow 3.3 from me today.

558.01 I think...

AggressiveBunting · 11/05/2015 02:37

Fantastic work Edith and Family.

Edith Did you sleep between laps in the end or stay awake?

4 miles from me this morning to make 562.01

EdithDickie · 11/05/2015 06:29

Halle glad you're okay, but horrible to fall.

Thank you everyone Grin

I didn't sleep at all. I ran third in my team and was only getting 90-100 minutes between laps for the first 4 laps as my team mates are total speed fiends! So I did really struggle to do anything much, get a bit of food and drink down and that was pretty much it. The food then made me feel so ill when I was running as I just wasn't able to digest anything properly before being off again. That was harder than I was expecting, just hadn't really realised how fast they would be. Spent most of one lap with black dots in my vision scoping out places to throw up which was nice! Didn't tho - hurrah!

When I came back in after my lap 4 I felt awful, like I was going to faint. Then my lovely team mates told me they were each going to do a double lap and they were slowing down to keep going so I didn't need to run for 4 hours. Best news ever! Had some food and then got to lay in my sleeping bag for 3 glorious hours! Couldn't drop off but was relaxed and rested. Felt like a human again after that and my last 2 laps were done without any stomach pain.

My team mates were incredible and did NINE laps each, 45 miles! So our team managed 24 laps in 24 hours, 120 miles Smile

It was a really brilliant event and I would definitely like to do it again in a few years (next year I think it will still be too fresh in my mind!)

Lovely support from the other runners, everyone was so lovely to everyone else. Really inspirational stuff. And just some deeply impressive athletes to see, the solo male who won ran 135 miles in the 24 hours! And he was laughing and joking at the end and didn't appear to have slowed down at all. Incredible.

Neeko · 11/05/2015 07:33

A slow 3.2 from me this morning. Just couldn't get my speed up.

Impressive work Edith and on no sleep too!

Well done on the weekend runs Family, Cinnamon, Halle and whoever else I've missed.
I hate that you can't scroll back on the phone app.

565.21

holmessweetholmes · 11/05/2015 10:12

Having trouble getting myself out of the door this morning! Come on lazybones . 14k....

sadhazzie · 11/05/2015 10:42

hey i completed my first ever 10k yesterday in 1hr6 minutes, really chuffed as i had slacked with training. already signed up for another one in the summer and looking to join a running club next week :)

IWantDanPoulterInsideMe · 11/05/2015 11:50

fantastically well done Edith and huge congratulations to all who raced over the weekend

4 to add from this morning, ridiculously hard work so am full of self pity

565.21 + 4 = 569.21

holmessweetholmes · 11/05/2015 12:27

Well done on your first 10k Sadhazzie! 8.7 from me makes 577.91.

Loueytb3 · 11/05/2015 13:18

Wow! 30 miles Edith - that's amazing. Hope you aren't feeling too sore! It sounds like a really good event, apart from the hills.

sadhazzie - that's a fantastic time for your first ever 10k and well done family on your pb too.

halle - are you still doing the every day in May challenge nutter Your poor knees, although I know I would be more peed off about the garmin failure than the fall.

Sorry for the complete lack of posts, I must have tried to post three or four times last week but RL got in the way. So I'm updating for the whole of last week....

Sunday - 5.1 miles
Tuesday - 4.3 miles (intervals)
Thursday - 5.1 miles
Sunday - 10.2 miles
Today - 5.1 miles

Making a total of 29.8 miles which I think brings the total to 607.71

I do love running at this time of year, not too hot and the woods are just beautiful. I still get lost almost every time I try and do a longer run in the woods though.

I don't suppose anyone is a member of purple patch running club? I have been thinking about joining as it is impossible for me to get to a regular running club because of work/kids commitments. A virtual club might be the answer.

Family and others who have Achilles problems – have you tried eccentric loading? Sounds complicated but it really just involves doing heel dips off a step. I had Achilles tendinopathy a few years ago and had physio and I was given those exercises to do. It does help. When it starts to flare up again, I do the exercises again and it seems to stop it getting worse.

On the washing running clothes - I sweat a lot. I always wear wicking tops/shorts but sometimes they do smell even after washing. On one of the runners worlds threads they recommend washing liquid specifically for smelly exercise gear called Halo. You can buy it in wilkos.

HalleLouja · 11/05/2015 14:20

Louey yup am still doing the challenge but as its the Village 10k race this weekend I am going to be mainly walking this week. Although tomorrow I might make it to the gym at work to use the rowing machine and bike. Its not so much my knees as my fecking hip. Am having a sports massage on Wednesday so see where that goes.

I think hindsight is a great thing. Probably shouldn't have started the month with a 5k PB. But it just happened. Honest guv.

Naicecuppatea · 11/05/2015 14:27

Can anyone recommend me a foam roller please (preferably with a link)? I think this is what I need as I'm getting shin pain/splints with running.

holmessweetholmes · 11/05/2015 14:29

Those of you who do HM and longer, do you keep doing those distances fairly regularly even when you're not actually training for a race? Or do you let your runs go back down to a shorter distance?

I ask because in the past I've had quite a few times when I've let my running lapse for a few months - never stop totally, but maybe go down to a 5k once or twice a week. I'm always really cross with myself after doing this, and it's a real effort to build it back up again.

Assuming I survive my HM Grin, I'm hoping to keep the distance up to at least a 10k a week. Just wondering what you all do. And wondering if I'd be more susceptible to injury if I regularly do longer distances.

EdithDickie · 11/05/2015 16:46

Had a lovely day, massage this morning, gentle walk, nice lunch. Stiff legs and (weirdly) abs but otherwise I got away with it!

Halle hope you feel better with the hips soon, hopefully the massage will help.

I was going to ask the same question Holmes!

familygermsareok · 11/05/2015 16:46

Thanks everyone Smile.

Wow Edith that sounds absolutely amazing! What a fantastic experience and what lovely team mates you had. Hugely impressive, well done!

And congrats sadhazzie on your first 10k.

Glad you ok after fall Halle. It is quite a challenge doing 5k every single day. Can you count the distance you walk around anyway and just do a little bit extra if you need to top it up, or does it have to be a specific 5k all in one effort?

Thanks Louey, I do those heel dips for Achilles too. I had a really bad bout shortly after I took up running and a physio taught me those and some calf stretches too. I do them regularly and increase frequency during a flare up and you are right, it really does help. I also ice after running and ease off on my mileage a bit, but I think I will always be susceptible Sad
What is a purple patch club? Haven't heard of that before.

holmes re runs between hms I don't reduce my distance much. I run about 4 times a week, anything between 4-12 miles is usual and available time is the main factor affecting my distance. I usually do at least one 10+ miler every week or so. In the weeks leading up to a race I do intervals instead of some shorter runs.
But I run primarily because I like doing that distance and the races are secondary, it is not about training up for me.
I don't think you would be more likely to get injured just by running longer distances regularly if you are used to it. It is when you rapidly or suddenly increase distance that you are at more risk.

HalleLouja · 11/05/2015 16:54

Family I have done 1k today walking to school and back. So need to do 4k when DH gets back. 4 year old is not a great walker and was happy playing today so didn't add to the mileage.

Anglaise1 · 11/05/2015 17:15

Edith congrats on your 24 hour relay, incredible. I hope you are catching up on sleep and taking it easy now.
Congrats on your first 10k sadhazzie, I hope you manage to sign up to a running club - I love mine and it is really motivational to run and race with other club members.
Holmes I'm much the same as family, I run around 5 days a week, 2 of those sessions are always intervals, one long and the other two whatever I feel like. I don't do the long run I did when training for a marathon (3 hours) as it is too time consuming, but still do one long run a week (10+ miles) because I love it.
8.5 miles from my dog running today
616.21

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 11/05/2015 18:28

holmes I try to make my Sunday runs at least 8 miles, and longer if I have a HM coming up. I don't have time during the week to run for more than an hour or so.

I'm actually home early enough to go out in the early evening sunshine Grin

holmessweetholmes · 11/05/2015 19:39

Thanks all. Will try and keep my distance up then. It's so frustrating to keep starting from the beginning again. Well, not from the beginning really, but it sometimes feels like it!
