Hi everyone, new thread started! Grin

OP posts:
Lagoonablue · 11/05/2015 19:39

A slow 2.5 miles from me today. I haven't run for a week as had a virus. It was hard work but I enjoyed it! Need to work on my distance.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 11/05/2015 19:45

3.9 slow miles from me. I even ventured out on shortsShock
Please can the next person who is not on a phone add my miles and Laguna's 2.5? Thanks!

lastqueenofscotland · 11/05/2015 19:47

5.82 miles from me today. Bloody warm out!

phlebasconsidered · 11/05/2015 21:07

Been off for a week because of bronchitis of all the things. A very phlegmy 6.5 miles from me today, a full five minutes slower than usual. On phone fretting about SATS so can someone add my miles?

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 11/05/2015 21:59

616.21 + 2.5 + 3.9 + 5.82 + 6.5 = 635.33 (Someone competent should check Grin

AggressiveBunting · 12/05/2015 04:49

Adding 7.2 from this morning. Didnt go crazy as want to be fresh for the mountain race on Saturday but put some big hills in for a bit of cardio training. The humidity has dropped so even though it's hot Total now 642.53

Out of season (i.e. now) I usually do one longish run (10ish miles) sometimes two, and then one other run plus I run to Crossfit and back so that's 4 miles total each time. I try not to let my mileage drop much below 50km per week as there are no short races here (minimum is c. half marathon) so I need to have that base to build on, but it's getting too hot for much more than 20km to be in any way enjoyable. In late August I'll increase to around 70k per week by stretching my long run, ready for my first race mid October (43k). However, I also use some races as training (i.e. dont go all out), and because there are a lot of them, I cant really taper for all of them or I wouldnt get any training done. I basically have to select, say, 3, that I want to do well in, and treat the rest as experience.

cinnamongreyhound · 12/05/2015 09:47

Well done sadhazzie!

Before I was pregnant I was sticking to a longer run on a
Sunday but not as long as the others usually 6-8 miles if I wasn't training for something holmessweetholmes.

holmessweetholmes · 12/05/2015 09:59

Thanks again for the info folks. I suppose that what I would really like is to get to the point where I could comfortably do an easyish weekly long run of about 8-10 miles. Whereas atm doing that distance is a real struggle. I have lovely visions of me trotting nimbly over the fells for hours with the dog (once he is a bit older) Grin. Whereas atm I drag myself through 8 miles and then collapse in a blistered and sweaty heap! Hopefully continuing the long runs will help take a little weight off me and make the running feel easier anyway.

runtothehills · 12/05/2015 11:02

Holmes I found it wasn't until I trained for longer distances (over 15 miles) that 8-10 became a comfortable long run, the key is then to maintain that, as the others said, with doing this distance on a regular basis. It's the same with all distances I think, those on here who are doing or just done c25k will probably think what you comfortably do seem difficult too!

Edith what a fantastic result and distance, amazing Star Star Star hope you enjoyed the massage, think I could do with one of those. Well done family too Star

Aggressive it's interesting how for such a small country most of the trail races are long distance (and long ascents). I never really thought of HK as a rural/trail type area but your posts are making me want to go back and explore beyond the city Smile

4 miles intervals today. The race on Thursday emummy is 6 miles which in hill race categories is classed as an AS which means steep but short, maybe I was bit overoptimistic calling it "quick" though Grin

646.53

holmessweetholmes · 12/05/2015 11:31

It must be hard running in the heat, AggressiveBunting. I love hearing about people running in far-flung (to me) places though. I am intrigued by the idea of travelling to do races in other countries. I've only ever done ones which are pretty local to me. Dh randomly went and did a lovely 10k while we were staying on the Ile de Re once though.

Have any of you travelled to other countries specifically for races? I get Runners' World magazine and enjoy looking at the Rave Run page and the features on races in other countries.

holmessweetholmes · 12/05/2015 11:33

I'm not going abroad on holiday this year but we're doing a house swap with some friends who live in Cornwall - looking forward to some lovely coastal runs around there.

emummy · 12/05/2015 13:27

5 miles today, intervals which went ok.
runtothehills good luck on Thursday!
holmes I often think about going abroad for races too. Furthest I've been is Inverness, and going to Edinburgh this month. We are holidaying in fife this summer which has a coastal path so will give that a go. Will keep dreaming about running in Europe or US, maybe the Marathon de Medoc would be nice! All that wine!

AggressiveBunting · 12/05/2015 13:30

runtothehills Geek fact: 50% of HK is national parks so there are tonnes of trails, and many of them are right up on the boundaries of the city because they basically start where it got too steep to build (and then the country parks ordinance protected them) .There's a 50k non-stop trail on HK island (meanders over an 11km as-the-bird-flies distance- have to cross one road but the rest is traffic free) , a 100k non-stop one in the New Territories and 70k on Lantau plus tonnes of smaller trails that join up with the main ones. Lantau is still pretty rural actually. People think HK is small because HK island is, but the New Territories and Kowloon (the mainland part) are big and Lantau is bigger than HK island. It's just that there's not much there so people sort of forget about it a bit.

holmes re overseas races I once did Marathon De Sables in Morocco. That was quite good, and I've run the 20km de Paris with a friend who lived there. Plus The Great North Run- that's abroad when you're from Brighton Grin. Some friends went to the Siem Riep Half last year but found it a bit hot to get anything close to a decent time.

holmessweetholmes · 12/05/2015 13:45

emummy - the Marathon de Medoc sounds lovely, although I think the temptation of the wine might not be so good for my running (except hat I became totally intolerant to red wine since I had the dc Hmm Angry).

AggressiveBunting I am ShockShockShock that you did the Marathon des Sables . I've read about it and shaken my head in disbelief. You must be super-tough! Running in HK sounds fab though.

I am not very well-travelled really. Well, not outside Europe anyway. NZ and Singapore are the only non-European countries I've been to. And I wasn't a runner back then.

AggressiveBunting · 12/05/2015 13:53

Um, yeah. It wasn't that heroic really. Think "Patsy and Edwina do MdeS". Entered it as a drunken bet and then refused to back down because so many blokes said "you'll never finish it". We walked basically all of it because the pack is pretty heavy and makes it quite hard to run (have to carry all your kit). For that reason very few people do a lot of running. Miraculously we managed to come 33rd out of 100 female starters. 35 dropped out and the rest were obviously more clueless than us. Tbh a lot of success in these races is admin (don't get blisters, don't get dehydrated, have a decent sleeping bag) and my army mate who did it the year before gave me solid advice.

holmessweetholmes · 12/05/2015 14:16

Grin Just a little bit heroic maybe? At least you didn't back down! Someone on another thread has just entered the ballot for the VLM mostly because her dh says she'll never do it! I don't get that kind of motivation because dh always goes 'Yeah of course you can do that - no problem '. Not because he thinks I'm awesome at running, but because he thinks stuff like that is easy because he's just one of those annoying people who seems to stay fit without doing much. Turns up to Parkrun about twice a year and laps me Hmm.

God I'm a blabbermouth today - must get some housework done!

familygermsareok · 12/05/2015 15:42

aggressive Grin all the best adventures stem from drunken bets IME Grin. Still amazingly impressive though, an incredible achievement!
HK sounds fantastic, but way too hot for me. I suffer when the Scottish sun makes a rare appearance.

Halle hope you got your extra 4k fitted in. I would never disturb a happily playing 4 year old either, the brief respite is just too precious.

No far flung races for me. I'm a real home body and only do fairly local ones that I can drive to within an hour or so, I often repeat the same ones each year. I will probably branch out more when kids are older and I can reclaim my weekends back.

phlebasconsidered · 12/05/2015 16:53

649.63 from a very slow 3 miles from me. I can't shake this chest cough and it makes me slow. Thank god I run literally in the middle of nowhere, at least I can hack it all up into the 100ft drain.

stilllearnin · 12/05/2015 18:45

Not much time recently but 2.2 to add of intervals. Happy to say my intervals are getting much faster ( tho not that fast!)

651.83

Also I was worried about my new running trousers so got ds (14) to film me from behind Shock He helpfully zoomed in and put it in slo mo too Grin

LastGleaming · 12/05/2015 18:48

Amazing edith Star. Well done to you and your teammates!

Well done sadhazzie, that's a great time for your first 10k.

Wow aggressive, the marathon des sables! I was in awe of my gym instructor mentioned he'd done it and iron man several times also. Kind of felt a bit silly telling him 5 mins before I did some running. I hate running in the heat, anything above 14 degrees is a struggle with my irish blood. Give me rain and cold and I'm in my element.

Hope all with bad chests and viruses recover soon!

6.8 and the BBC weather lied to me promising strong winds and heavy rain. I toddle out in thick 3/4 bottoms, wind jacket, cap and no water and the sun comes out. Had to stop at 6k for a five minute break and buy some cold juice as the heat was making me feel a bit sick. Now I'm not allowed to run for two weeks as I've to get a steroid injection on a nerve in my foot tomorrow. Wahh!!

656.43

LastGleaming · 12/05/2015 18:50

X-post. Too slow at typing but Grin stilllearning, braver than me

658.63

lastqueenofscotland · 12/05/2015 19:37

11.39 over the course of two runs (to and from work) KNACKERED would be an understatement, one back felt a lot worse than the one there, but kept up a good pace for both so mustn't grumble.

670.04 (i think, someone not numerically illiterate may want to check)

suzannecanthecan · 12/05/2015 20:25

thats quite quite a tall order for commuting to work Lastqueen, do you think you'll try it again?

I've considered running to the gym but it's a 10 mile round trip and I dont think I could cope with a lifting session in the middle of a 10 mile run.
So I cycle which takes a fraction of the effort.

12.2 miles from me 682.22

Anglaise1 · 12/05/2015 20:32

Holmes I did the Rome marathon this year and will do another abroad next spring, either London or Barcelona. I tend to do most races here in Brittany or Normandy as I prefer doing them with my club friends. If I didn't have children (I'm a single mum with 2 kids 14 and 8) I'd go on all the big trail runs I could. A friend of mine who is a couple of years older than me, but all her children are grown up, is doing Mont Blanc in August and then the Diagonal des Fous in the Réunion island this autumn. I'm very jealous!
emummy my club did the Marathon de Médoc last September (the longest marathon in the world, it certainly is. Not a marathon to do for a PB, my friends who usually take around 4 hours did it in 6 with all the chateau stops for food and drink every 5kms. It was very hot too. But they thoroughly enjoyed it.
7.5 miles for today
677.54

Anglaise1 · 12/05/2015 20:33

x post with Suzanne, total should be
689.72
My commute to work is 42kms, a marathon there and then back. Definitely not possible!
