Hi everyone, new thread started! Grin

OP posts:

Hi everyone. Just 1.7 from me today (intervals), so 340.93. It was not the best, I got a stitch for the first time since I started running, I seem to have pulled the front of my thigh and my laces came untucked and were flapping about (which irrationally annoys me!).

What is it about intervals that makes them so hard? When I did my longest ever run on Sunday, I ran the last 5 mins as fast as I ran the fast bits of the intervals today, and today it was only for 1 min at a time, and the last one (6 in all) was much harder!

Anglaise1 · 07/05/2015 20:40

runrun how long/far are your intervals and how long is the recuperation between each interval? And before doing your intervals you should have a warm up run of at least 25 minutes.

Runrunrun1 · 07/05/2015 20:48

Hi anglaise, I use an nhs 5k podcast, so there's 5 mins walking and 5 mins slowish running to warm up, then into the intervals of 1 min fast, 1 min slow, repeated 6x. Just seems odd that it feels harder than a longer run with fast pace at the end. Guess it's something to do with the changes in tempo?

cinnamongreyhound · 07/05/2015 21:08

I agree familygermsareok, I'm pretty much always faster in races then in training runs.

I'm the same as you AggressiveBunting, apparently it's because I have a short stride so it makes hills easier. Always pass others on hills in races, still hate them though.

Get well soon lagoonablue.

Been out with my friend and dogs tonight and felt much stronger. Little dog went off on a little hike so we did a bit extra too so was 4.6 miles.
345.53

runtothehills · 07/05/2015 21:13

Run intervals are hard and exhausting, but I find you cover an amazing distance and its over before you know it.

Out at club handicap race again tonight. Strapped up knee behaved very well and knocked another 30 secs of my 5k PB Grin

345.53 + 3.1 + 3 (warm up and cool down) = 351.63

HalleLouja · 07/05/2015 22:02

I have decided to give up my Every day in May challenge. I feel like a quitter but my hip is sore and I am shattered.

nowwearefour · 07/05/2015 22:08

I can contribute 3.1 from my run today. Bluebells still looking totally amazing and it was my first ever 5k in under 30 mins!

IWantDanPoulterInsideMe · 07/05/2015 22:18

I have 5.25 to add and cinnamon I saw lots of fern hoppers at our bluebell run tonight and thought of you!

so that's 8.35 with nowwearefour's 5k and all I have to do is find the last total

IWantDanPoulterInsideMe · 07/05/2015 22:19

Oh excuse special election name, it's Mitchy/Poppy whoever

ahem

351.63 + 8.35 = 359.98 (?)

Neeko · 07/05/2015 22:57

Halle. Does it have to be 5k all in one go? Surely it would count if you walked 5k within the day? Maybe u could do that for a few days to give your hip a rest. Don't give up. You are doing so well!

cinnamongreyhound · 08/05/2015 00:42

They are a lovely group of people IWantDanPoulterInside... and a bluebell run sounds lovely! Their annual race is coming up in June, wibbly wobbly log jog, 5 miles through the undulating bike tracks in the forest, wonderful race!

Neeko has a point HalleLouja Grin

Neeko · 08/05/2015 06:59

359.98 + 3.3 = 362.31

Why does doing the sum on here feel so difficult?!? Grin

IWantDanPoulterInsideMe · 08/05/2015 09:19

I might try to get across to that one cinnamon Smile unless it's sold out?

IWantDanPoulterInsideMe · 08/05/2015 09:23

oh it's a proper timed race Shock

HalleLouja · 08/05/2015 09:36

Neeko I walked it yesterday. Its just that it takes so much longer to walk it. I am also feeling ill today so not adding to the love of the challenge. My friend says I should rest admit defeat. We will see. Will take it one day at a time.

Anglaise1 · 08/05/2015 10:35

Runrun 5 mins walking and 5 mins running isn't a huge warm up whereas after your longer run you are more warmed up so maybe it is easier on your muscles? Intervals are hard work, but very useful in improving your speed.
Bank holiday here in France today (one last Friday, one next Thursday, one Monday 10 days after, May is a bit of a write off work wise with all the long weekends). So I did my long run early this morning before the rain arrived. Didn't quite manage maintain the 12.5kms and hour for the last 20 mins as I should have done. 11.25 miles so
373.56

cinnamongreyhound · 08/05/2015 12:00

Yes it is timed, last year was the first year with chip timing the year before it was a stop watch and clipboard Grin

emummy · 08/05/2015 12:00

3.1 from me, new pb, hurray! Kept a really steady pace, even up the big hill so pleased with that. Guess all these progression runs in my hm plan must be helping! Beautiful sunny day too, and it's Friday. Now I just need to write my OU essay and it will have been a good day!
376.66

holmessweetholmes · 08/05/2015 14:32

Well done on the pb emummy! So who's Parkrunning tomorrow? I'm a bit miffed that I still don't have my 50 shirt - I did my fiftieth back in the summer! Anyone else still waiting on theirs?

suzannecanthecan · 08/05/2015 14:50

tomorrow is strength training for me, today was running, 11.85 miles, so:
376.66
+11.85
=388.51

cinnamongreyhound · 08/05/2015 14:55

My friend and I did our 50th in September, my size was in stock and I got it the following week she's still waiting. Did you order it holmessweetholmes? If so it should be next month Smile

suzannecanthecan · 08/05/2015 14:58

bit of a diversion but seeing mitchy/Pollys' current username I just googled Dan Poulter.
I'm sure I recognize him, he looks just like a bloke I knew to say hello to from a gym I used several years ago.
As I remember he was very well spoken and athletic looking but very friendly/affable, I think I was surprised that a man that posh and good looking would even speak to someone like me!

IWantDanPoulterInsideMe · 08/05/2015 15:33

Grin he went to same med school as a friend of mine

I don't really fancy him but see him on posters EVERYWHERE round here in mid suffolk

IWantDanPoulterInsideMe · 08/05/2015 15:34

he's in May edition of men's health if you want to see him in his underwear?

holmessweetholmes · 08/05/2015 15:34

Yup Cinnamon - I ordered it in August I think. I just had a thought though... I moved shortly after ordering my shirt and now have a different Parkrun registered as my local one. I'd assumed the shirt would be sent to the one I was at when I ordered it (I have friends who still run that one and will pick it up for me) but maybe it will be sent to my local one here?
