Hi everyone, new thread started! Grin

OP posts:

Holmes I'm probably a bit odd, but I quite like hills. With hills, you always get a descent and therefore some recuperation. Flat courses like the Mont St Michel marathon I'm doing at the end of the month which goes around the bay are actually quite difficult because you have no recuperation. They are even harder when you are against the wind (it is one way..)

lastqueenofscotland · 06/05/2015 19:46

no run for me today as it keeps randomly hailing which is painful to be stuck out in! back on it tomorrow

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 06/05/2015 19:54

I was hoping to run, but having cycled home into the wind feeling like a cartoon character pedaling furiously and making no progress I thought I'd wait a while for the wind to stop. It has started raining instead, so my run will have to wait for tomorrow Grin

suzannecanthecan · 06/05/2015 20:29

cycling into the wind is in many ways more frustrating than running into it, and there's only so much wrestling with the wind that you can take in one day!

familygermsareok · 06/05/2015 20:34

6.3 from me earlier. Tried to do it in the pace I am aiming for in my 10k this Sun but I didn't manage anything like. Will be way off getting a PB Sad Maybe something miraculous will happen over the next 4 days!
Will add onto total quickly then go back and read thread as I always take ages and end up x posting.

203.5 + 6.3 = 209.8

familygermsareok · 06/05/2015 20:37

Have spotted typo, Suzanne's should have been 303.5 so our total is now 309.8

Anglaise1 · 06/05/2015 20:45

Family I'm sure you will do a good time. I've never managed to do the same time running alone as in a race. Even in the relay race I did Saturday because I was running moreorless alone (no runners nearby in front or behind) my time was slower than it is usually in a normal 10k race. The other runners push you along as well as the adrenalin! Good luck for Sunday.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 06/05/2015 20:48

After I posted I looked out of my window and the evening sun looked so nice across the park that I went and ran 2.25 miles - sped off far too fast and got a stitch half way round but hey, I went running. I was also feeling a bit sick because DH and I had been snacking on crisps, nuts and olives all evening - I don't recommend that kind of carb loading quite so close to a run Grin

312.05

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 06/05/2015 20:50

And germs, I agree with Anglaise - I try to attach myself to someone slightly faster than me and let them pull me round. My BFF, who is a lot faster than I am says she picks other runners off one at a time Grin.

runtothehills · 06/05/2015 20:51

I do like my hills, but Aggressive 3500 sound pretty full on, especially there and back. Hats off to you Star

My knee feeling sore today, have consulted a colleague and am now ultrasounded, strapped, foam rolled and doing my exercises. Fingers crossed it will heal quickly so can get into building distance asap.

Wind is both your friend and your arch enemy. What is most frustrating is when it is in you face its gale force but then seems to calm down on the return journey Angry

Sazorchard31 · 06/05/2015 21:08

Adding 3.1 from me....315.15

Read this thread and thought I'd best go out. Got my fastest mile and pretending the wind wasn't behind me for it. Met office app said 35mph gusts ...windy!

family the atmosphere of the race will speed you up. I'm always quicker when in a race as don't want to slow down, when you're running solo you don't always notice yourself slowing but do when running with others.

familygermsareok · 06/05/2015 21:18

Thanks Anglaise. Hopefully the race adrenaline and other runners will spur me on. I can only do my best anyhow!

Lastgleaming Sad about your good route being taken over. Is there an option of driving or cycling out to any new routes? I prefer running straight out from the door, but there are some hills near me which are just too far away to run to and back but have some lovely routes on them and I often drive there for a run.

holmes I have used Adidas Kanadia 5 for trails until very recently. They served me very well through many winter muddy/ snowy runs, mixed terrain hm and Tough Mudder. They have finally come apart though (not helped by getting caught on a wire fence and ripped all along the side). I confess when I went to get some more trail shoes I was seduced by the Saucony Peregrines. They felt lighter on my feet than the Kanadia when I tried out on treadmill. They are twice the price though! Whether they will stand the test of time or whether I will return to value for money Kanadias remains to be seen.
I don't know if there is much difference between 5, 6 or 7 model, but every time I get new road shoes it seems to be another number up and I never notice any difference.

runtothehills look after your knee. Is it the Lairig Ghru you are doing?

aggressive good luck , 3500m Shock Smile

familygermsareok · 06/05/2015 21:28

Thanks OhOne and Sazor. It is so true, other runners do help to keep you going. I sometimes try to pick other runners off too, but not always very successfully Grin

HalleLouja · 06/05/2015 21:38

Day 6 of Every Day in May. Tick. 318.25

HalleLouja · 06/05/2015 21:42

Familygerms I find I always run faster when other people are around at a race. Can never reach the same pace on my lonesome.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 06/05/2015 21:43

Well done Halle Smile are you running every day, or do other forms of exercise count as well?

HalleLouja · 06/05/2015 21:49

Oh have to run, walk or cycle 5k Every Day in May. Will have to put the sponsorship link in later in the month so those who feel sorry for me can give some money to charidee Wink. Also if you are free on 17th May there are still places in Wheathampstead 10k.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 06/05/2015 22:01

Oooh thanks Halle, will check the calendar for 17 May Smile

holmessweetholmes · 06/05/2015 22:06

Wow - thanks for the response about the Kanadias Familygermsareok! I have slightly funny shaped feet (Normal width across the front but really narrow at the back) so when I find shoes that are comfy I want to stick with them! Might go for the 5's then - they are cheaper!

AggressiveBunting · 07/05/2015 05:41

Anglaise It's a treadmill test, thank god. I'm so shit at cycling I'd probably expire in the first minute.

Did 10k of hills today with a friend to make 324.55 Staggered through 1000 metres of ascents. It's so humid I lost 1.5kg through sweating despite drinking 1L of water and an iced coffee on the way home. I keep telling myself it will pay off at the start of next season to have trained year round but at the moment it's just suffrance. The thing about hills is that although I dont like them when I'm on step 700 of 1000, I'm better at them than the average person so I do much better over a brutally hilly course than a flat or undulating one. On that basis I've come to embrace them as I can at least think "It's hurting me but it's killing them"

family you'll be faster on race day. Definitely focus on picking off other runners. It's one of the main benefits of appropriate pacing. I deter myself from going too fast by telling myself I dont want to be a "picking off victim"

stilllearnin · 07/05/2015 09:18

4.9 miles from me. Not so easy as no intervals this week and a cold and I'm a scaredy cat because I lost some blood on last weeks run. But I'm relieved and so far no Ill effects

329.45
??

holmessweetholmes · 07/05/2015 10:13

I'm the opposite, AggressiveBunting! People overtake me on hills because I'm rubbish at them, but then I catch up with them again (maybe because they've knackered themselves out by going up the hill faster than me!)

Anyway, it's hill training for me this morning too. I just go to a big, looong hill near my house and run up and down it. Urgh. Hopefully it will pay off in my hilly trail HM though!

emummy · 07/05/2015 11:28

7.2 from me this morning, mile repeats. Nice day but on the way back there was a serious headwind!
336.65

holmessweetholmes · 07/05/2015 12:10

2.58 from me = 339.23

Managed 4 times up the horrible hill! It's really mind over matter on the hills isn't it? Half way up I know I can make it, but the desire to slow down to a stagger walk is very strong!

Lagoonablue · 07/05/2015 12:47

Got a stinking cold so my scheduled run is off todayHmm I will leave now til Saturday.
