Grab Your Tuna!

stevienickstophat · 18/03/2015 16:23

This is a thread about reclaiming exercise for those of us who never felt it was for us, or who lost our confidence after childbirth or illness or injury, or just lost our way a little bit regarding looking after ourselves.

This thread is about realising that getting up off the sofa and moving about a bit can be enjoyable, can be done in our pyjamas and can be fitted into lives that are too often lived for the benefit of other people.

This is a thread about firming up our wobbly bits, strengthening our bones, making our joints flexible and lifting our moods, so that the rest of our lives are that little bit easier and more enjoyable.

So, grab your tuna, wrestle yourself into your sports bra and watch out for the Little Differences!

Some just need something to lift but a fair few of them don't need any equipment.

The total stretch would be the ticket for that iam Grin

YonicScrewdriver · 26/04/2015 09:43

I have little hand weights, 1 kg or something, would that do?

gamerchick · 26/04/2015 09:49

Yes, you don't need heavy weights.

lalalonglegs · 26/04/2015 11:00

I use two bottles of milk or I have two large tins of cassoulet which work as hand weights.

I was staying somewhere with no DVD player so I had to give it a miss for five days, back in the saddle today with Box Fit and Abs. I'm getting to quite enjoy Box Fit...

YonicScrewdriver · 26/04/2015 11:11

Thanks!

gamerchick · 26/04/2015 11:12

I love box fit... I've lost 2 inches from the waist since feb doing that one every session. Grin

AmazonGrace · 26/04/2015 11:17

Box fit is fab, love the pace and before you know it, it's done.

Didn't manage to come back to it last night, hope to do two sessions today.

Welcome newcomers, this thread is great for motivation.

velmadinkly · 26/04/2015 13:27

Welcome all the new comers.....

Has anybody thought about having arm weight things on when doing boxfit? I wouldn't want to risk holding my weights because of the risk of me letting go and then it flying across the room.

I think I need DH to get my 4kg weights from the loft for when I do the squats in fitness challenge. My weights go from 2.3kg to 4kg, so I don't know whether to get some 3kg ones because the jump in weight difference might be a killer. Hmm decisions decisions.

AmazonGrace · 26/04/2015 13:40

Velma, I've been using 3kg since the start (only because they were the lightest dp could find) and I find them easy at the beginning of tone & sculpt but by the third session I wish I'd got lighter weights, find that third round a killer. I can manage though...just. I think 2 - 2.5kg are probably about right, after all as Ed states, you're trying to tone not build muscle. I'm thinking of getting a lighter set but it is manageable with 3kg, I wouldn't be able to manage 4kg.

AmazonGrace · 26/04/2015 17:29

Warm up, legs, box fit + I did a few arm exercises with both weights from the tone & sculpt session to finish off.

Now for a cold glass of water and a lie down Grin

velmadinkly · 27/04/2015 06:57

Warm up, UF Burner, Fat Burner, tone and sculpt and some stretch all done.

Just under 11 weeks until my holiday and about 7-ish weeks since starting all this. I was really buoyed by seeing myself in my workout tshirt on Saturday with I looking looser.

I hope everyone else can get some exercise in today.

Moodykat · 27/04/2015 07:11

Warm up and fat burner done. Try as I might I cannot fit in two sessions in the morning! Just do not have time no matter how early I get up the kids make it impossible!
Combined with the yoga sessions I try and do most days though I figure I'm doing alright!

PeaceOfWildThings · 27/04/2015 09:43

Took the weekend off workouts. I'd mown the grass on Friday and then helped DH with consconstruction and destruction (tree felling) over the weekend. Back to doing an 8 minute core pilates this morning and lots more gardening and small scale earthworks for me to get on with this week.

Cutting the grass has really brought it home how much good these workouts are doing me. Something like that would have taken me all day to do in past years, and then I'd be exhausted and in pain for days. Some of that has been sorted out with diagnosing chromchronic health issues and getting medication. Lately though, the exercise has been really helping me steer a steadier course emotionally, and take on more of the day to day work without it being such a burden. Thank you Stevie!

Also, I'm 2 months into these workouts and together with adjusting what I eat, as well as being stronger and fitter, I've lost about half a stone. I am half way through to getting to the body shape and fitness levels I feel I need, and I'm seeing big differences in the mirror. Still have a way to go with flabby back and tummy, but the little-ansand-often approach is really paying off. (Bear in mind a lot of my daily life has been spent sitting down for work/driving/crocheting/MN! 10 -30 mins about 5-6 times a day, plus healthy eating is all it has taken.

Totality22 · 27/04/2015 12:08

Hi ladies,

Never, ever though I would end up in the exercise section of a forum Shock but here I am on the recommendation of some lovely ladies.

I just posted in chat asking a few questions about the Davina DVD, if anyone has a few minutes to answer I would be very grateful

  1. Does it really work? If so how often does it need to be done?
  2. Can it be done if you are quite a bit overweight? (I need to lose 2st to get into healthy BMI and 3st to be back to a size 10-12 where I am happiest)
  3. Can it be done if you have a velcro baby and a toddler that follows you to the toilet?
  4. I am suffering PP joint pain and did with my son too (ended up exercising through the pain and needing physio on my ankle) so do I need to take medical advice before I start? My GP is freaking useless to be honest.

I am sure I'll have more questions.

TIA and I look forward to finally getting my arse in gear.

PeaceOfWildThings · 27/04/2015 14:30

I'm going to answer 4 first and say with 3 stone to lose and joint pain, go and get a blood test for thyroid function, low ferritin, vitamin D and just general PP health. Diet has a bigger impact on weight loss than exercise.

If you get the healthy eating right then yes, the Davina DVDs (or other routines which combine cardio/HIIT, strength training/weights and stretches/yoga/pilates) can help with getting into shape and living a healthier lifestyle. I would include getting help for any health niggles within that too!
Also important to have regular rest days, not overwork tired muscles, and drink lots of water.

For me, it has taken many ywars to get all the ducks in a line with chronic health problems and foid, but now I seem to be getting somewhere and with about a half hour of exercise (total) 6 days a week, I can lose about a stone in about 4 months. But if I get injured, that sets be back to square 1. So very important to rest, not overdo it, take time off when ill, warm up and cool down and if it hurts don't do it!

velmadinkly · 28/04/2015 06:55

Warm up, fitness challenge, box fit, ultimate abs and some stretch all done.

A small change is that I can now feel more movement through my back when I twist from side to side.

totality I answered your OP in chat. Hopefully you will come and join us. Remember you can download the sections one by one onto a phone or tablet if you didn't want to shell out for the full DVD if you aren't sure how you will fit it in with limpet child etc.

AmazonGrace · 28/04/2015 07:10

Well done Velma. I'm sitting here with a cup of tea whereas I should be exercising. I'm planning on doing a couple of sessions tonight.

cherrytree63 · 28/04/2015 08:27

In one of the workouts Davina says your body goes on burning calories for a while when you've finished working out.
So that got me thinking...if you leave some time between two or more workouts would you burn more calories than if you do them back to back?

PeaceOfWildThings · 28/04/2015 08:39

Possibly, though doing something every day should be enough. With rest days if feeling achy. There have been studies that show that doing 10 minutes of cardio a day is massively beneficial to health in all kinds of ways, and that working out for longer, say 30 minutes, doesn't give a corresponding benefit. Also that stretches are a great health benefit and don't have to be done right after the cardio, it can be done in the evening. So I suppose doing 10 minutes in the morning can set tou up for most of the day and 10 more minutes in the late afternoon should set you up to have more energy for the evening.

Pantsalive · 28/04/2015 11:02

Morning all
Well, after 5 weeks of owning Davina, I have finally done two sessions - ultimate fat burner and total stretch both times. Goodness I'm unfit! It's all manageable but so much harder than it would have been a few years ago.

Thanks so much to Stevie for inspiring me! Where is she btw? MIA?

What is the warm up that everyone mentions? I haven't seen that listed.
Still not got a sports bra, but I'm sure I'll get round to that

BuzzardBird · 28/04/2015 11:26

Morning Pants, well done for finally starting. (took me about 6 wks too)

The warm up is the very first box when you click on 'work outs'.

You got your weights yet?

Pantsalive · 28/04/2015 11:54

Hi Buzzard. Glad I'm not the only one then.
I've got Davina on the iPad. I don't think I have the workout option.
No weights yet. Thought I might start with tuna Smile
Which sessions do I need weights for? I think I might need to watch a bit more of it so I know what I'm doing.
I have just been to Ed's facebook page and checked out his combos for when I'm feeling more adventurous.

BuzzardBird · 28/04/2015 12:17

Fat Burner, Tone and sculpt are two that I have needed weights for. I haven't done them all though as I have limits.
Hopefully someone else with downloaded version will be able to help you on the Warm Up.

I only use 1.5k weights as I have a tendency to bulk. I think 2k is about the norm.

Pantsalive · 28/04/2015 13:34

Thanks Buzzard. I have got weights somewhere. I'll dig them out. I might try the fat burner next. As I say, I must watch a few more.

AmazonGrace · 28/04/2015 19:15

Warm up, legs and box fit done. I'm getting much lower down in the squats, then there's a bonus with more squats in box fit, feels good doing the bonus minute too Grin

Pants, it's vital you do the warm up before the sessions, get it downloaded Grin sorry to be bossy!
