Hello all the newbies, I am super impressed with the marathon chat!

cinnamon I hope your DH feels better asap. It is my Patella that has been in pain the last few weeks, but nowhere near as bad as your DH - lets hope a professional can help.

suzanne you should give running like a girl another go, I thought it was super and even gave it to my male PT who is running London this week as an inspiration/help! It isn't about learning to run, more her experiences. I heard her interviewed by Ryan Tubridy on his radio show in Ireland when I lived there and she sounded super lovely and normal.

Well I had my last physio trip this morning, my knee feels loads better, I had a lovely leg and back massage as part of my appointment (in future I will go to the physio for a massage, a million times better than a health spa!) and I am definitely running on Sunday in the Southampton half, though I plan to do a 12 minute mile tops and just get around in one piece.

I feel both s**t scared that my knee will give out and also slightly over excited that I might be ok and run well and even speed up for the last few miles for a strong finish. Who knows, I'll be back on Monday to update you!

My parents, DH and DC's are coming to watch so lots of pressure to make it round!!

suzannecanthecan · 23/04/2015 15:09

I'm sure she is a lovely person Actiongirl but I didnt think she was a much cop as a writer.
(It's probably me, I'm hypercritical when it comes to reading material)

Good luck for the Southampton half!

actiongirl1978 · 23/04/2015 16:02

Thanks Grin

Anglaise1 · 23/04/2015 16:59

Good luck with your HM Sunday Action
Jessie Another vote for Mizuno I used to have really narrow feet before starting running but they are completely deformed now and the Asics I used are too tight. I switched to Mizuno Waveriders on the advice of a friend and I'm really happy with them. As well as being wide they are very light, dynamic and shock absorbent. I take a size 8.5 in them, usual size 7.

suzannecanthecan · 23/04/2015 17:14

my feet seem to have got bigger too
my current favorite are the Altra brand, their 'thing' is the wide toe box.
I think it's so individual when it comes to shoes though.
I have found that changing the lacing can help with shoes that feel a bit too narrow

actiongirl1978 · 23/04/2015 17:33

Wow I was only thinking the other day that my converse and my boots are super tight, even though normally they are fine, could my feet have got slightly longer too??

Thank you Anglaise Smile

MrsStevenPatrickMorrissey · 23/04/2015 18:12

Thanks all for the welcome....good to know Anglaise that fasting hasn't effected your training...I'm fine at the moment, just a bit worried if/when I take on longer runs....and I've found in the past running usually increases my appetite, so having FD might not be a bad thing!!

How do you all work rest days?? Do you have many, or have a running plan?? I suppose when your working towards a race then you follow a training plan, just wondering any of you just run when and as far as you like?? I'm a bit all over the place at the minute so need to sort out a plan really....

And thanks I had a question on trainers, but that's been answered Grin

I have to agree with Suzanne I read running like a girl and didnt really like it, it felt very short and o don't know, maybe it's me, I found it grated a bit on me, i read it on kindle too, so maybe the book makes a difference...anyone got any other good running books??? I do love a good running book Smile

Good luck all with races this weekend I shall be watching the London Marathon wishing I had that level of fitness and determination....maybe one day...

nowwearefour · 23/04/2015 18:39

I ran a 5k today (plus a bit extra which I didn't measure so I can't count it). Was so beautiful running through woods filled with bluebells with the clear blue sky overhead. Amazing,

Runrunrun1 · 23/04/2015 19:14

A very hot and sweaty, but beautiful 3.1 from me today!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 23/04/2015 19:24

alley I ran the NY marathon on the Cool Running 20 week plan. I did almost every run on the plan, this I missed one long run through illness but managed all the rest. I ran the whole thing, and finished in just under 5 hours - was hoping for 4.45, but had a couple of long waits for the loo.

I didn't have my name on my bib but run for JDRF and was wearing my vest (DS1 has diabetes) and got lots of shouts out along the way - including another (French) runner who told me he also had a child with diabetes. Various friends told me where they would be on the way round, and although I missed some of them it really helped to see some familiar faces. The last few miles were in Central Park, which I'd run hundreds of times, so it really felt like going home to be finishing (we used to live in NY, but i'd left by the time I did the marathon).

Right towards the end I saw someone holding up a neon pink sign saying "OhOne you are awesome!". I decided that it was for me, even though it was probably for another person called OhOne. When I got there it was one of my closest friends who had been tracking me on the app and knew I was almost there. It gave me the most enormous boost and I sprinted the last 200 meters and shot over the line. And then burst into tears Smile.

So after nearly 3 weeks of lovely sunshine and warm temperatures the forecast for this weekend is sleet, snow and temperatures from 0 to 6 degrees Shock

Have been having major pack dilemma and have decided on the bigger but heavier sleeping bag rather than the warmer clothes, think a good nights sleep on the Saturday night is probably key.

Off up to Ullapool tomorrow night and then 7.30 start on the Saturday.

Good luck with your HM action and welcome all newbies Grin

orangeflutie · 23/04/2015 19:50

Hi just popping on to add miles. 4.0 miles from Tuesday and a much easier run today of 4.5 miles. Good news is my nerve pain in my neck and arm seems to be getting better and currently trying to wean myself off the painkillers.

Cinnamon hope your DH's knee gets better soon. Sounds horrible.

Hope everyone else stays injury free. Weather's too good not to run.

Lagoonablue · 23/04/2015 19:53

4.4 miles tonight though not so sure. I did more or less the same route as Monday yet showing 2 k more on Map My Run! The graphic of the run looks like I have double backed a couple of times too! Very odd. I'll take it though!

Lagoonablue · 23/04/2015 19:57

I think it is a GPS problem. It is picking up other signals. So make that a 3.1 mile.??

cinnamongreyhound · 23/04/2015 22:26

Hi MrsStevenPatrickMorrissey, I always ate before running but started going early with my friend (6am) so no time to eat and found those runs were great. Never done 5:2 though so can't really comment on that.

Hi JessieEssex!

You should definitely go stilllearnin! I'm ED at our parkrun and I try to recruit random runners in the forest Wink

I'm reading running like girl at the moment and really enjoy it suzannecanthecan, she goes on waaay too much about bras though!!

Thanks for all your sympathy for dh!! He's been iceing, resting and trying to keep mobile. It's quite swollen and he's wearing a support while walking but refusing to see anyone as yet.

suzannecanthecan · 23/04/2015 22:40

Cinnamon do you think he will relent about seeking treatment when he realises he's cant do much in the way of training if his knee is compromised?

I just found her writing cliched and 'girly', but like I said I am especially unforgiving when it comes to reading material!

emummy · 24/04/2015 06:54

runtothehills best of luck this weekend. Maybe the weather will be better than expected? Think the warmer sleeping bag a good idea, sleep will be very important! I really hope it all goes well for you.
The forecast for Balmoral has improved, from snow followed by rain to showers and possible sun so fingers crossed! Have bought a little tent anyway to shelter in.
Good luck all racers this weekend

actiongirl1978 · 24/04/2015 07:36

lagoonablue take all the miles you can get they all count!

ohone I think my period is due, as I read your post and got all teary at the end! How lovely!

Mrs SPM I struggle with rest days, but my usual pattern is : Mon-Pilates, Tuesday-Grit plyo, Weds-Intervals, Thurs Rest, Friday Gym, Saturday-Rest, Sun-Long run. If any of that gets disrupted then I try and fit in a tempo run as well or swap the grit class for a tempo run.

I can't wait to get back to normal now my knee is almost fully better, I am wobbling in lots of places...I need some exercise discipline!

actiongirl1978 · 24/04/2015 07:38

Runtothehills good luck!!

And let's hope the snow doesn't materialise...My HM is forecast to be raining, which is not a bad thing, I run very well in the rain!

Anglaise1 · 24/04/2015 07:46

Good luck for this weekend Runforthehills - I hope the weather is kinder to you than forecast, and most of all that you enjoy it.
MrsSPM If you are aiming for a certain race, like a HM or marathon it is important to have a plan, but if you just run to keep fit I guess you just go out and do what you feel like. I had 4 official training sessions for the marathon but could have changed one for cycling or swimming. I sometimes did more if I felt like going out for a run with the dog. My coach [unfortunately] prefers intervals to long slow runs and they dominate my plan, but because I train with other club members it is easier. Intervals on your own are harder to do, both for motivation and for speed.

cinnamongreyhound · 24/04/2015 14:50

It's feeling better today Suzannecanthecan but I have kept pushing him to at least see the physio, will see what happens the first time he tries to squat next, that will prod him I think!

suzannecanthecan · 24/04/2015 15:00

Cinnamon, I think he will be aghast at the thought of his (presumably) huge quads turning into spaghetti legs Wink

cinnamongreyhound · 24/04/2015 16:00

He describes them as turnip thighs! He's 18.5st at 5ft11 so there's plenty of him!

lastqueenofscotland · 24/04/2015 20:35

2.14 at a decent pace for me tonight.
Attemping 4 miles tomorrow having only been back running two weeks eek

suzannecanthecan · 24/04/2015 21:13

he sounds like a bear of a man Cinnamon :o
