I love my loose vests in summer LaughingM but my belly is far to white with too much loose skin to expose it to the world Wink

runtothehills · 21/04/2015 13:05

Lots happened sine my last post!

Well done Edith, 5mad, Aggressive and Irain on you race results, glad your hip held out 5mad Grin

Brilliant on achieving the 5k marks nowearefour and runrunrun only way is onwards!

Suzanne I never raced or ran with anyone until about a year into running, was scared how I'd look/perform in front of others. Now I do races/events but they are mainly low key, small number races (hill race last week was only 60 runners). I agree they are good for getting you doing more speed work/intervals etc, running club is also good for that (again only discovered this in the past 6 months).

Final run today of 5 miles before this weekend, head up Friday afternoon. Have all the kit laid out in the spare room, everything looks small and light but when put together it's still quite heavy. Good luck emummy for Saturday.

Hope it goes well runtothehills; forecast looks a bit damp for this weekend, hope you don't get soaked!

suzannecanthecan · 21/04/2015 14:28

11.61 from me
1003.91

sounds as if there is nothing unusual Runto about taking a while to get into the idea of racing.
I have only ever run alone, unless you count the occasional dog that runs along with me for a while:)

chickened out of wearing shorts so the seafront was spared the sight of my spaghetti legs Blush
I used to be proud of my thunderthigh rugby player quads, they have dwindled :(

Anglaise1 · 21/04/2015 14:53

Chatting in trail races is easier than road races, especially road races like short ones like 10k when you are usually going above your lactic threshold pace so talking is difficult. I chat to people on HMs and often overtake, then get overtaken, then overtake, get overtaken...there is no awkwardness in overtaking in a race, you just move on or the other person does. And at the end of the race congratulate the person you chatted to.
I didn't know what interval training was until I joined a club. It definitely helps improve your speed and VO2max.
Good luck runforthehills and emummy for your races this weekend.

karatekimmi · 21/04/2015 16:58

I'm a chatty runner, if I can't talk, I'm going too fast!!

The thought of my white flabby belly flopping up and down is off putting to me, I wouldn't force others to look at it!!

nowwearefour · 21/04/2015 17:14

Thanks for your welcome. I already feel like I have learned a lot and 'get' running a bit more since reading the thread. I am now going to look at interval training as I clearly need to understand it before I can do it!

Dottymum2 · 21/04/2015 17:16

Hi all thanks for advice, loving this forum so far! 4.5 mile canal run today :)

phlebasconsidered · 21/04/2015 21:03

A slow 2.5 from me yesterday. My next run after my long one is always crap a d niggly. Then 3.2 today actually in the 30zone as a lb and a fastest mile at 9:37, I can't tell from one day to the next how I will run. Maybe the cross training last night ( martial arts 4hours a week) helped my niggles. Or maybe it was just my perimenopausal rage tonight.

Well done to all the runners this week so far. Some huge races coming up for you!

With mine and Dotty added I make it 1042.91for the total.

Elsasalterego · 21/04/2015 21:14

Thanks for the invite over here Anglaise. I am just getting back into running having had a knee injury in September which I think I got for being too excited and training too much to soon for this Sunday's London marathon! I couldn't run more than 5 mins without pain, MRI said ITband problem, damage to cartilage (possibly beginning of arthritis or maybe injury) and also something else to do with my patella, can't remember what now! But it was all a mess... Anyway getting back into it now, having spent the last couple of months building up a bit of strength on the treadmill I have managed to get out in the sunshine.... Last week I did my first 5k outside, then yesterday did 5k and today a slower 6k with DS who was riding his bike. Anyway I would love to join this thread, this evening I signed myself up for one of the race for lifes but my ultimate goal is next year's London marathon as I have deferred my entry, so there should be lots of races building up to that. 5k is just the start hopefully!

Knackerelli · 21/04/2015 21:14

Well done to everyone on their races and runs! is great to hear about all of them.

4 mile club run tonight. Managed to completely embarrass myself though; was running along ( chatting ) and didn't see a massive tree root. Tripped over, flew in the air, and landed sprawled in a star shape on the floorBlush What a plonker!

1046.91

Dottymum2 · 21/04/2015 21:26

Oh no Knackerelli, hope ur ok!!

Knackerelli · 21/04/2015 21:36

Thanks dotty A few grazes and covered in soil was the worst of it. Think it was mainly my pride that was dented!

Anglaise1 · 21/04/2015 21:44

Elsa welcome to the running thread...I hope your knee is a lot better now. You have plenty of time to get ready for the 2016 London marathon, did your entry get automatically deferred because of your injury?
I'd love to do the London marathon but it seems difficult to get into unless you run for charity. I'm not élite but could qualify as good for age (marathon sub 3h50 for 40 - 49 yrs) so maybe that is a way in? In France people are not as charitable as in the UK so it is easier to get an entry for the big races rather than go to a ballot.
Good luck with your training!
Knackarelli so pleased your fall wasn't anything serious. I hate falling. I have to be really careful when I run not to trip over my border collie who is a lot faster and more agile than me.

Elsasalterego · 21/04/2015 22:21

Anglaise I pretty much had to beg for deferral, I had indeed signed up with a charity and they said they were not deferring anyone but I burst into tears when I heard that (genuinely gutted, not just being a drama queen) and as I had the MRI results they could see it wasn't just because I was too lazy to do the training in time. Anyway I learnt a lot from that injury and I am going to be much much more careful this time. I basically went from 5k to 17k in about six weeks last time. Foolish. I basically have stamina that way outweighs my fitness or what my body post x2 DCs can cope with and I have to force myself to curb that. It's not always healthy to be so bloody minded!

familygermsareok · 21/04/2015 23:05

See, this chatting is dangerous business! Glad you are ok knackerelli

You are right of course anglaise, there should be no awkwardness, but there is a bit in my head. I am aware that I have a general tendency to talk too much and I don't always pick up on people's cues that they want to finish the conversation. I suppose I over worry that I am doing the same in races. It might spur my victims on to run faster to get away from my ear bashing though Wink.
I don't chat at 10k pace either, maybe gasp a quick 'hi' to anyone I know, that's about all I could manage, but hm pace is different.

Hi Elsa, welcome and good luck with resuming your training, I hope you stay injury free this time.

Good luck with your races runforthehills and emummy. My DH is doing his first ever cycle etape near Inverness on Sun and the forecast is 2 degrees and sleet Shock. I hope it is better in your areas.

AggressiveBunting · 22/04/2015 01:51

Adding 5 to make 1051.91. Had to do treadmill as away at a conference and the outside temperatures and humidity are too high to make outdoor running a pleasant prospect.

Anglaise With your Rome time you stand good chance of getting a good for age place so apply on that basis. I'm hoping to get an international place for 2016. Interesting about lactic threshold. On shorter races I'm never quite sure how comfortable I should feel. On Sunday I felt like I was always at least a bit uncomfortable (and in extreme discomfort for some of it) but I think maybe that's right- it's just that I'm used to longer races where you have to stay relatively comfortable in terms of cardio effort to you'll never make it round. I guess I just need to do more races so I can calibrate what I can actually sustain over various distances.

AggressiveBunting · 22/04/2015 02:36

Actually, it looks like if you can make the good for age, you're guaranteed. Right, gotta start working on that marathon time Grin

Runrunrun1 · 22/04/2015 09:01

Good morning everyone1 Have really got to get on with some work, so just popping in to add my 3.1 from yesterday evening. Was lovely to have a run after work - 1st time I've managed that. Hope everyone has a good day. 1046.01

stilllearnin · 22/04/2015 09:36

Hello. Quick intervals between school run and work. I just cannot get myself out of bed to run before school. Adding 2.2 and the last 0.3 was up a big hill (haven't managed that hill in a while Grin ).

1048.21

Anglaise1 · 22/04/2015 09:59

Elsa I'm so pleased you managed to get your place deferred in that case. And being bloody minded is definitely an advantage with running as it helps with endurance, I'm sure.
Aggressive that's interesting that you have a place if you are good for age. I'm surprised that the times are so low for women in the good for age, I'd have thought they would be more like under 3H30 for a marathon. My marathon time is even lower than the 'good for age' 18 - 40 category which is 3H45 according to the London marathon website. The French contact site doesn't load and the email I sent was rejected for international entry, I hope you have more luck with your application! Just noticed that the 'good for age' entry closed in July 2014 for the 2015 marathon, will you have time to do a marathon before then?

Anglaise1 · 22/04/2015 10:08

Forgot my 10 miles from last night and this morning Blush

alleypalley · 22/04/2015 13:19

Hello, can I join your lovely group please. I used to be a fairly experienced runner, I've done 2 London marathons, and a few HMs and 10k's. I broke my toe last year though and it took ages to heal. I was supposed to do the Paris Marathon a couple of weeks ago but had to pull out as even though my foot is better now I hadn't been able to do the training for it.

As it was with a few other things going on I hadn't ran for quite a while before I broke my toe anyway, so it's been pretty much a year since I've done any proper running.
So in a very spur of the moment decision the other night I signed up to do the Amsterdam marathon in October, so now I really have to stop making excuses and get my trainers on again.

Monday I did 3 miles and today I did 4. Surprisingly my pace wasn't too bad at just under 10 min miles but I'm hoping to be able to knock a minute off that to achieve my goal of a sub 4hr marathon. My other 2 were 4:21:20, and 4:21:04.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 22/04/2015 17:40

Hello alley and Elsa Smile

Anglaise you made me smile about casually forgetting your 10 miles Smile

Knackerelli hope you are OK today.

5.1 lunchtime miles from me today, I was really pushing myself towards the end and had to remind myself that I was just out for a run. Life has been a bit stressful in our household of late and I realised I haven't run as much of it off as I would have liked Smile

1070.22 with my and alley's miles.

I have signed up to my local "marathon in a weekend" again in June - 5 miles on Friday, 8.1 x-country on Saturday and HM on Sunday. I have a time to beat from last year Grin
