No I'm doing one in Liverpool.

LaughingM · 20/04/2015 21:42

Must be spring - every time I log on after the weekend loads of you have done races!! Well done all, however long or short the race or how new or experienced you are!

I've got my love of running back. Wahoo!! Delightful 5 miles yesterday along the sea front. I was staying with family and it was WAY hotter than I had prepared for, so half way through I whipped my top off and finished my run in just my sports bra! It was very liberating to feel all that fresh air, it has to be said! Would never ever have dared do it at home. Does anyone else, outside a Sweaty Betty advert, actually run in a sports bra/crop top?

LaughingM · 20/04/2015 21:45

960.2 + 2.4 on friday + 5 on sunday + nowwearefour's 2x 3.1 = 973.8

5madthings · 20/04/2015 21:48

Welcome nowwearefour I think I can speak for everyone when I say yes your mile's can count, the more the merrier!

Thankyou for all the support over my half marathon, I am still feeling super smug and most importantly my hip feels Ok!

Trying to read back whilst also making packed lunches and sorting school stuff for the mornine, life back to normal after the lovely weekend at my sisters.

Having said never again I am now debating a half in October and looking at asics training plans online and debating what time to aim for.. I must be mad but I figure it gives me plenty if time to sort my hip, build up more core and a goal to aim for...

I agree with sazor if you can do four miles you can do 10km and the atmosphere really helps, miles 10-12 were really hard for my half but I ran past a choir and loads if kids giving me high fives by the side of the road, it totally helped. PlUs you are running with others in a race which helps, but don't set of too fast! At the start of my half loads of people whizzed off, I found myself starting too fast and made myself sloe down, ignoring the fact I was over taken by a man in a cheese string costume.... And it was the right thing to do, I then overtook lots later as they were all slowing and I held a consistent pace. Looking at my garmin splits I am very pleased with how consistent I was, then the last 5km were hard but I could have pushed more at the end and didn't. I will kbow better for next time...

sassytheFIRST · 20/04/2015 21:48

Ha ha, no chance. I'd cause accidents with my 30jjs out for all to see GrinGrin

5madthings · 20/04/2015 21:55

30gg here and I need my sports bra and then a vest with built in support to hold those puppies in place so no way would I run In just my bra! Bravo though!

5madthings · 20/04/2015 22:02

Ooh Southend half is June 14th, so seven? Weeks away? Would it be stupid to sign up for that... It's a really flat course apparently. Manchester was not flat!

suzannecanthecan · 20/04/2015 22:12

I might but only if Id applied enough sunscreen to sink a ship!
I may get up the courage to run in shorts tomorrow but really prefer to keep my shoulders covered when the sun is out

suzannecanthecan · 20/04/2015 22:14

well done on pacing yourself like that 5mad Star

5madthings · 20/04/2015 22:31

Thanks Suzanne it's actually suprisingky hard, when everyone is whizzing away at the start the temptation to try and keep up is high! But I had read something about not doing that, plus the dam course started going uphill so that helped my slow myself down! It is a bit demoralising though watching everyone speed past.

familygermsareok · 20/04/2015 22:39

Haha 5madthings, you have been well and truly bitten by the hm bug Grin. There will be no stopping you now!

Welcome nowwearefour and dotty, and yes, if you can do 4 miles 6 will be fine, as others said just take your time, don't go out too fast and enjoy the atmosphere Smile

Thanks aggresive, that is useful info. I think I will stick to the same kind of trail shoes I have, they have served me well and I definitely need ones that cope with mud and slippy surfaces more than scree. If it ain't broke why fix it! It is interesting re race and the awkwardness of chatting or not. I often get into conversation with fellow racers in hms which really helps the miles go by, but there is that feeling of how do you politely leave when you want to run at a different pace. And that is without any chance at all of podium places, I can imagine that must magnify it intensely.

suzanne I think you do an amazing distance and weekly mileage for 6 months into running, I am well impressed Star . I think you are right about the time factor too. I would certainly do more long runs if I had more time available. My running goes to pot in the school holidays!

familygermsareok · 20/04/2015 22:44

But it's great when you catch them up again later Grin
I used to be the one dashing off way too fast and losing it in the second half, it was horrible being overtaken by everyone I had proudly sailed past earlier Blush
I have learnt the hard way though and really make sure I force myself to set off slowly and to slow down if I start going too fast now.

5madthings · 20/04/2015 23:01

Oh yes it was great to overtake after. I actually ran quite a bit with a girl called beth, she was struggling as she was recovering from a chest infection, she normally runs them in 2:10! It was nice to chat to her, she slowed down eventually so I went ahead but saw her at the finish, she came in a bit after me and thanked me for running with her :)

I never did catch up with Mr cheese string! But apparently he was a trained athlete doing it in costume to break a world record so I don't feel.so bad about that!

lastqueenofscotland · 20/04/2015 23:11

3.5 miles for me today. Very quick (by my standards anyway), clocked my fastest ever 5k and felt like i could have done further.

Got the bug back!

familygermsareok · 20/04/2015 23:13

Grin at Mr Cheese String! I hope he got his world record.
It is really nice to have a chat on the way round, that is one of the things I love about running, that generally everyone is so friendly and encouraging Smile

suzannecanthecan · 20/04/2015 23:17

I'm a bit worried about Beth with her chest infection
endurance events are known to be pretty hard on the immune system, I hope she doesnt have a relapse!

5madthings · 20/04/2015 23:25

Me too Suzanne she was lovely, she was running in a team but she made them go on ahead. I think the infection was gone but she was still struggling. She was part of a proper running club, one of her team mates tried to make her pull out but she wouldn't. She was happy at the end so hopefully she takes some time to rest now as she was doing it ad part of her training for a full marathon. I only kbow her first name otherwise I would try and find her via fb etc to wish her well. I think it was a Blackburn running club?

stilllearnin · 21/04/2015 06:30

Lovely to hear your HM news 5 mad and all the race chat. It's really interesting. I am trying to find a spare weekend to enter a 10k. The kids are so busy during spring and summer with their own stuff. I may just zip off and do it on my own one morning.

I am so overly chatty I'd be useless in long races. I'd have exchanged numbers every few miles Smile

familygermsareok · 21/04/2015 07:45

5.2 intervals this morning. Frosty but sunny. Coffee sooo good now.

979

Neeko · 21/04/2015 07:48

973.8 + 3.7 from me today is 977.5

Loving all the chat.
Totally agree that I'd run more often and much further if I wasn't limited by work and childcare. They will grow up though!

Neeko · 21/04/2015 07:50

X post. 979+3.7= 982.7

Runrunrun1 · 21/04/2015 09:15

Hello nowwearefour, I'm just nearing the end of c25k (did wk 9 run 1 on Sunday and ran my first 5k/ 3.1 miles ever!!!), and am also thinking about where to go from here. I haven't been on this thread for long at all, but it's lovely, really encouraging!

cinnamongreyhound · 21/04/2015 11:08

I never chat in race, I usually go for a time and can't run as fast if I'm talking. I also agree it's hard not to go off to quick in a race, I use my garmin to pace myself would be rubbish without it!

emummy · 21/04/2015 11:13

Nice steady run today, glad I wore my t shirt! Was roasted by the end. 4.8 so that's 987.3
