irian if you can do 10k you could l do a half.I personally find the longer runs, hard work on my own but on the day the runs are so much easier.and do what if you walk some, loads do. (Me included!) It's just slower running and helps you recover to enable you to complete the course. Everyone else being there really helps keep you motivated!!

Fab on your 10ktime, I dream on a sub 60, best is 1.01.01.

familygermsareok · 19/04/2015 20:42

Wow, loads of [stars] s for everyone.
Well done on your first 5k runrunrun, on your first 10ks fardelsbear and Deliaskis and huge congratulations to all the racers, 5madthings Edith Aggressive and Irian. What a great weekend Smile

Irian I used to think that too. To be honest I am still amazed that I can actually run at all, I couldn't manage 100 yards to start and I have now been running 8 years and am still in a happy state of wonderment after a long run. I moved up from 10k to hm by just gradually increasing my distance till I was comfortable running 12m, it's amazing how it just kind of happens, but there are plenty of bridging courses out there if you like something more structured.

suzanne I also like running just for the sake of it and don't need races to motivate me. I only entered my first just to see what it was like and enjoyed it but I don't do many, just my favourite local ones. I wouldn't do intervals without a race in front of me though, and they have definitely improved my pace and endurance.

emummy · 19/04/2015 21:42

Well done Edith, 5madthings and Irian! Great running!

suzannecanthecan · 19/04/2015 22:21

interesting insights thanks Family
early days for me, I've only been running for 6 months so I guess I'm still doing the 'base building' thing

Neeko · 19/04/2015 22:29

Great running today. Well done all ThanksThanks

3.1 from me tonight but I can't see the total. Can someone please add me?

cinnamongreyhound · 20/04/2015 03:35

Well done AgressiveBunting, 5madthings, EdithDickie, Irianofway on your races and well down everyone who's gone further than ever before and anyone getting out running!

Not missing running so far, just enjoying my little man. Lovely weekend of normal things and back to hospital tomorrow. My friend says she's doing some miles for me and getting tired Wink

karatekimmi · 20/04/2015 06:08

872.44 + 13.1 + 13.1 + 6.2 + 13.1 + 3.1 + 9.3 = 930.34

karatekimmi · 20/04/2015 06:11

I think that's right Grin

Well done to all runners - podium finishers, first distances, half marathons, 10k's and all other runs!!

I was a very happy with my parkrun plod, away at Aberystwyth I was 59th!! okay there was only 61 runners but I'm normally 200 ish at my parkrun

karatekimmi · 20/04/2015 06:11

Oh and the 9.3 at the end of the miles is from me - adding 3 5k runs on!!

familygermsareok · 20/04/2015 07:32

For all the Hoka users, how are they on mixed terrain? I'm thinking of getting some but a lot of my routes have some road on them too, up to 4 miles. I also use my current trail shoes on roads when it's a bit icy and find they have better grip. What would Hokas be like for this? Thanks.

actiongirl1978 · 20/04/2015 08:38

Hi all!

Hello to all the newbies, nice to have more miles!

Congratulations to everyone that ran in the last week, ohoneohtwo we done on the Manchester Marathon, 2.24 is a fab time!

Radio silence from me as we were spending the last few days of the holidays camping. It was utterly freezing at night but suncream and swimmers weather during the day so a brilliant trip. Children don't go back till tomorrow so I will mainly be searching for school uniform today and trying to make them do some homework...

I ran again on Thursday with my extra tape on my knee, 3.5 miles and I am not doing anything else again until my HM on Sunday. I am really worried about getting around after 5 weeks with no long run, but I was sooo looking forward to it, I might just have to summon every bit of determination, grit my teeth and keep moving till the end. My knee is feeling a bit better, it is very incremental though, it isn't like I am seeing any great changes from day to day but I am still doing my exercises Grin

I have been trying to do some gentle cardio in the gym without aggravating my knee, so walking fast with arm swings and some rowing intervals too.

I have another appointment with the physio on Thursday to get taped for the HM and I have also invested in a roll of it from Amazon so I can tape myself in future! My physio uses dynamic tape in case anyone is interested!

Hopefully I will be back to normal contributions from next week!

10 miles from me today, nice sociable run with a friend in the sunshine.
Suzanne you certainly don't lack motivation if you are already running the distances you do after 6 months! I ran on my own for a year before joining my club and never dared do more than 5 miles.
Irian Family is so right, you gain in confidence when you push yourself more, you are capable of a lot more than you think. I only started running two and a half years ago, first on my own when I ran 5kms 4 times a week, then when I joined the club I did my first 10k after 2 months, my first HM after 6 months and a marathon less than a year after that. And I'm pushing 50...so anything is possible as long as you enjoy it and stay injury free

Anglaise1 · 20/04/2015 10:42

953.1

suzannecanthecan · 20/04/2015 11:03

Anglaise, really?
I'm surprised, you must have known pretty early on that you were a good runner?
Why were you afraid to run more than 5 miles? ?

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 20/04/2015 11:42

Thank you actiongirl, but it was 5mad and her sister who did the Manchester HM Smile

Anglaise1 · 20/04/2015 12:19

Suzanne Lack of confidence I suppose and the fact I'd never tried. In my twenties I used to row and ran 5kms regularly then as part of the training but never thought of myself as a runner. It wasn't until I joined the club here in France and then had to run further than 5k that I realised I could do - and that I could run faster than many of the other girls in the club too. It was then I had the confidence to run longer distances and start participating in races.

Dottymum2 · 20/04/2015 12:52

4 miles from me this morning, it was a hard slog! I'm training for a 10km 3rd May, but scared! Any words of advise/wisdom appreciated!!!!

Lagoonablue · 20/04/2015 12:58

5k from me today. What's that In miles?!

AggressiveBunting · 20/04/2015 14:38

Congrats to edith and 5mad on your race successes. Glad the injuries stayed at bay for you. Well done to everyone stretching the distance as well.

family I run a fair bit of tarmac in my Hoka Mafate Speed which are trail shoes. They're not lugged so they work pretty well. That said, I'm really not sure they'd be good on very wet or muddy ground as they have a smooth bottom like road shoes but a reinforced midsole for trail. I mainly have to worry about loose slopes, rocks and scree so they work ok. Re the race, without the detour, on purely mathematical grounds, I would have been second and the girl who went wrong with me would have won, and the winner would have been third, but obviously, she might have run faster if she'd had us in a pack with her, so there's no telling. It was how it was and I need to learn to pay attention to the trail markings Grin

stilllearning Not sure if I like the pack or not. It gives you extra motivation but it's also more stressful as you're waiting for each other to crack or break, and a little bit awkward cos you know you're competing and there's only 3 podium places and 5 of you, so chatting seems weird, but not chatting for miles on end also weird.

Anyway, I had a day off today, so no miles from me

Lagoon 5k is 3.1 miles, so with that and dotty's 4 makes 960.2

actiongirl1978 · 20/04/2015 15:16

Oh madthings I am so sorry, what a rubbish running thread friend I am. Well done.

And thank you ohone!

Must pay more attention.

I promise that when the kids are back and I am over my injury and HM I will have more time to read the threads properly..

Suzanne I think you are epic for running the distances you do after such a short time. It took me more than 2 years to go over 5k. You are an inspiration.

cinnamon I hope you are having a lovely baby time Smile

suzannecanthecan · 20/04/2015 15:31

thanks Actiongirl:o
I was used to fairly long exercise sessions, 40 minute cycle to the gym, hour of weights, hour of cardio, cycle home again type of things
So I guess I'd already built up a reasonable level of endurance
I think it comes down to 'the longer the run the better the high 'I would go for longer runs now if I wasnt worried about aggravating my sacrotuberous ligament

suzannecanthecan · 20/04/2015 15:44

and doesnt alot of it come down to time?
I think many of the posters on this thread would like to put in more miles but the demands of marriage/work/children mean that they just cant?

I am quite lucky in that (these days) I can pretty much do what I like when I like, so it's not really a level playing field

nowwearefour · 20/04/2015 16:00

May I join in your thread? I have done c25k this year and did my first park run on Saturday in under 31 mins. Hardest thing I have ever done. Did another 5k yesterday too. Plan to do 3 5ks per week and another session when I can to focus on speed to try to get better. Need another goal now - I think 5 miles feels reasonable. Can either of my weekend 5ks count towards your total?

Sazorchard31 · 20/04/2015 18:49

Hello dotty I have a 10k.on.3 may too! If you did 4 miles you'll easily do 6, enjoy the atmosphere and it'll help you get round

Dottymum2 · 20/04/2015 20:16

Ah thanks for that sazorchard31 I needed to hear that! Are u doing the Birmingham 10?
