morning all hope you all have a lovely day, going to fit i a 5k after work today

familygermsareok · 13/04/2015 08:41

LaughingM sorry to hear your running hasn't been particularly enjoyable recently. I think you are right to postpone hm and take that stress factor away, then hopefully you can enjoy running for the sake of it without having to hit targets. I had been running for a few years before considering any races and although I do several races a year now I do like to have a breathing space where I can just kick back and enjoy the running for what it is without any pressure. I know other people like the motivation of a race though. We are all different!

Well done runforthehills , your race sounds great and the après-race even better! Grin

aggressive that is interesting about large muscles being energy suckers during long races, I had never thought about that. Maybe I will stick to my regime of no strength training at all Wink

emummy well done to your DD, you must be very proud of her Smile

No running for me today, my legs are ridiculously stiff and sore after hm. Not usually this bad, but I will listen to them for once and give them a rest!

5madthings · 13/04/2015 09:08

My hip is not happy today :( it's hip bursitis I think and pretty sure it's linked to my spd in pregnancy and week core. Taking nurofen have gp app to sort a physio referral and get painkillers for Sunday and have just booked a private physio session for Thursday and they will tape my hip up as that may help. I just need to get through the half on Sunday! And then will see physio through nhs and work on my core strength etc as I don't want to stop running. Though will not do this distance again, I was fine up till 8-10 miles so that will be my limit I think.

Hope you have a good rest family

5madthings · 13/04/2015 09:54

Gp says hip bursitis which I knew anyway and my hips are too mobile. That will be five babies... Physio referral and take Co codamol and ibuprofen together for race day. He was really lovely and wished me good luck for the run.

Very cheeky link to our just giving page for our run next sunday, my sister is also a mnetter.

Whowouldfardelsbear · 13/04/2015 11:01

Congrats in your podium Anglaise and mwahaha to nemesis Charlene

A very good cause 5madthings - good luck to you and your sister!

MorrisZapp · 13/04/2015 15:23

Can I ask about music? Do you run with headphones in? And if so, do you use your phone for that or do you have another gadget?

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 13/04/2015 17:24

WIBU to go out for a leetle run even though my legs hurt? I have worked from home all day on my sofa watching runners since 8am (I look out on to a park) and really need some fresh air!

MZ - I stopped running with music after my iPod mini went through the wash in my running jacket pocket. I started out with C25K and had got used to running with music, but am perfectly happy with birdsong and my breathing now Smile

Pooh to dodgy hips 5mad, but glad that you are still going for it at the weekend. Just don't overdo it

Morris I run with my phone, if out for just an hour I sometimes don't listen to anything, but on long runs if I'm on my own I usually listen to BBC podcasts.
Did anyone do the Bournemouth 10k which ended up 2 miles longer due to a marshalling error?
www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-dorset-32283985
This often happens on long trail races, but not often on road races...at least not to this extent!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 13/04/2015 19:19

(my second one-I killed it's predecessor by washing machineSad)

lastqueenofscotland · 13/04/2015 22:11

Very Happy :)

ImBrian · 13/04/2015 22:13

Well done on all the races and pbs Smile

phlebasconsidered · 13/04/2015 22:44

So impressed by the runs happening!
Laughing M: I only started running in January, my first HM is scheduled for October, I simply couldn't contemplate it without at least 6 months run in! Take your time, you are doing the right thing.

As for music: I really panicked at my 10K race the other day as it was no music / headphones rule ( although there were LOTS of people who disobeyed that rule, made me wish I had too, almost!), as I am used to running to music. I use a mix of heavy metal and Northern Soul. My favourite tracks at the moment are quite up tempo Northern Soul ones, they are smooth enough to keep running too and pacey as well. Plus I think they make me do my northern soul style dancing as running, IYSWIM, and I run very smooth! If you haven't ever seen Northern Soul dancing you won't know what I mean, but they dance very slinky. It's all very fluid. Like this.

My very best song for my 10.20 mile (my best pace) is this: I kind of run in time and it's speedy enough! And the Theme from Shaft makes me come over all funky.

familygermsareok · 13/04/2015 22:50

Was it a leetle parkrun OhOne? Grin Seeing other runners out always makes me want to go too!

5madthings at least you have cause of hip pain confirmed and a plan. Hope it all goes well, it's a great cause and a great idea to run half each.

MZ I never listen to anything. Mainly because I enjoy the quiet and like letting my mind wander and declutter, also for safety as most of my runs incorporate small single track country roads with no pavements so I need to hear any traffic.

anglaise Shock An extra 2 m if you're only planning on running 6 is proportionately quite a lot at race pace! Not surprised a few unhappy runners. I was even more Shock at the driver who got onto the course the wrong way and was flashing her lights at the runners, presumably thinking they were unreasonably taking over the road!

familygermsareok · 13/04/2015 23:05

phlebas that is lovely dancing to watch, I see what you mean about the fluidity. I have just tried to imagine myself running to Needle in a Haystack and I kept wanting to add small skips and dance a bit instead. Could this be a potential new sport, freestyle running? Grin

phlebasconsidered · 13/04/2015 23:45

That's what i do familygerms! I kind of dance run. It's such a fluid music. i run with my feet not picking up much and I sort of do a bit faster skips at the "ooh ooh" bits. I used to go to Northern Soul all nighters as a lass and it's so "loose" it's a really good thing to keep in mind when running. Plus,a bit of a shimmy helps sometimes!

cinnamongreyhound · 13/04/2015 23:50

Thanks for all the congratulations!!

Well done everyone who raced, I've managed to join dh on a couple of dog walks and did the school run today Wink

phlebasconsidered grunty fen is meant to be quite tough. Not as flat as suggested and either warm or windy but a nice course.

Sorry to hear your hip isn't good 5madthings Sad

phlebasconsidered · 13/04/2015 23:57

That's fen running! I was shocked at the hills at Cambourne, i am so used to flat, but the winds didn't surprise me at all. Fen running is often about running 2 miles one way at 12 mins per mile and then 6 miles the other at 9 mins! It is impossible sometimes to even move forward and don't get me started on bastard crosswind! People who bemoan hills and yearn for flat haven't run in a county where you have no wind cover, no tree, no ditch, for 30 miles. Sometimes I feel I am running on a treadmill and the horizon actually gets no closer!

AggressiveBunting · 14/04/2015 02:55

phleba I went to the Fen Poly many years ago and remember that wind- i'd be cycling to lectures and literally going nowhere, and then on the way back I didnt even need to pedal. Rowing was also a complete bastard due to the cross wind.

Morris I listen to music on the treadmill with an ipod and "Yurbud" earphones (never hurt, never fall out- awesome) but not on the trails as I don't feel safe if I can't hear my surroundings and it's annoying for people if they want to overtake you and you can't hear them. For that reason most races round here dont allow them.

lastqueen re running gear, I just bought some Puma bra tops on Amazon for summer. Has anyone tried that new Adidas Climachill? On paper it should be the answer to my prayers but I'm wondering if it's just a gimick- not convinced that a few aluminium dots are a match for a HK summer.

4 miles from me (Crossfit commute) makes 766.78.

Anglaise1 · 14/04/2015 06:54

Phlebas you are so right about running on flat with no shelter. It is like that in the Mont St Michel marathon at the end of May when it can get hot, no cover, you at the mercy of the wind and the Mont St Michel doesn't seem to get close faster. There is no recuperation either - at least when you go up a hill you go down one. Flat isn't always easy!
Aggressive I used to row when I was younger too - at Bristol and then Cambridge. I loved it. Unfortunately I lived too far away from a club to continue with it here in France. Not unhappy with running as an alternative, though!
I never listen to anything when racing. It isn't forbidden in France, it just goes against the spirit of racing for me.

Neeko · 14/04/2015 07:39

First 5k in my new shoes today. Felt strange but definitely supported my weaker leg better.

Off to catch up on all your chat.

Neeko · 14/04/2015 08:27

Well, that took a bit of reading Smile

Welcome to all the new people. Love the running enthusiasm. Lots of really knowledgeable people on here not me though

Some amazing distances and times last weekend. Well done all. That Wolf run looked fun but cold.

Sorry to hear of the hip pain 5mad. Hope the adrenaline helps you through next week. Have added to your page to see if that will help tooWink

I'm definitely less achey after my run in my new shoes. Feeling the urge to try them again tomorrow.

emummy · 14/04/2015 08:32

Took ankle out for a progression run this morning and it felt ok. Am sticking with flat courses for the moment so as not to strain it too much, but the best thing about running up hills is definitely getting to fly down the other side! Will see how things feel today and tomorrow, hope to get 3 runs this week anyway, maybe as much as 6 or 7 miles at the weekend if ok. Should have been doing my second 10miler this weekend if the fall hadn't happened, so am trying to rearrange my runs to get a few longer ones in before the hm. Hopeful of managing my 10k a week on Sunday.
