Welcome MZ Smile. Chicago would be fab. I was there on business a few years ago and the hotel where I stayed had a running group for guests on Tuesday mornings - one of the managers took us out around the lake. It was lovely, but very hot. I loved "Running like a Girl" too. Are you following any kind of training plan?

phlebas we should have swapped details beforehand - I was distracted by work all week and the WOLF run yesterday. DH had to wake me up this morning and I was in a bit of a tizz getting ready to go - even forgot my garmin today, so need to wait for the official time. I heard someone tell a lady I was overtaking that it was an hour and two minutes just before we got to the final corner. Are you going to do any other local races?

germs that is really good advice about the run/walk technique (and is what I had in mind, rather than my run/walk technique which is to get bored of running/too tired and walk random chunks - though I've only done it a few times, I usually make myself keep running, however slowly). A friend of mine did a HM by (I think) walking three/running two minutes when she was injured and ended up with a really good time.

And I am feeling well chuffed with myself as I managed my hm, no PB but a very respectable time considering last weeks training strategy Wink. I nearly lost it at 10m, my legs have never felt so tired and I was getting hip pain which is new to me so worried me a bit. This hm finishes on a fairly steep hill over the last mile, I just wanted to be able to keep running, albeit slowly. DH and DS2 appeared unexpectedly to cheer me on which really gave me a boost. Unusually achy and stiff now, may need some more Cake and Wine tonight and I can pretend I am still on hols Smile

Hi Morris , welcome to running, it is addictive! You have plenty of time to build up to hm in Sept and Chicago sounds like a great goal to have Smile

479.35 + 13.1 + Morris's 2.2 = 494.65

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 12/04/2015 16:13

Well done familygerms that's great Smile. It makes such a difference when loved ones turn up and give you a boost Smile

We need to add 5mad's 4 miles as well 498.65 Smile

Well done family and well done on your wolf run ohone my sister keeps trying to get me to do one with her but not happening!

I have had a shower and drink and feel fine, bizarrely feel like I could go out and have another run. It is totally mental, I am figuring better a crap run today than next sunday and the important thing is I got out.

Am also going to sort my playsuit out, since my phone died I have been running without music or with ds2's mp3, his music taste is not mine! There are certain tracks that always gee me up so going to download then again.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 12/04/2015 16:26

I have done the WOLF run twice now. I would never even consider doing the winter one (yesterday was cold enough). A friend of mine wants to do some kind of obstacle race, I might look for a shorter one.

Forgot to say, they made a point of saying at today's 10K that it was 50/50 male and female racers, unlike the normal 70/30 split. When it was announced someone behind me said "so are there only 100 runners? Grin"

familygermsareok · 12/04/2015 16:27

Thank you OhOne Smile
That sounds like a good walk/run strategy your friend had. I'm not sure how the people I knew did it , something very similar I think. I just remember them telling me how hard it was not to run during the early walking sections but how it really paid off at the end. ( my own walk/run technique was more like yours but I also now try and just keep going very slowly)

Well done 5madthings for getting out, and it is good that physically you were fine, the adrenaline buzz during a race will work wonders mentally.

Anglaise1 · 12/04/2015 16:30

Welcome to last queen and stoaty, congrats OhOne Phlebas on your Cambourne 10k. I used to live in that neck of the woods, Great Chishill near Royston. How many runners were there? I'm so pleased you enjoyed it Phlebas you've shown what you can do in such a short time of running, fantastic!
Family well done on your HM, it sounds like it wasn't a course to do a PB on and after your holiday too, enjoy your Cake and Wine you deserve it!
5madthings I'm thrilled you are going to join a running club (I think I read that somewhere??) it really does help motivate you.
I did my HM this morning and the conditions were ideal, dry, foggy with a little sun and a few of us from the club did a PB of 1H42. And because I've just gone into the next age category I got a cheeky 3rd place podium for Veteran 2 woman (49 - 59).
My Garmin packed up after 3kms and I didn't miss it.
And my nemesis from the club, competitive Charlène (who overtook me on the finish line last year) was 3 minutes behind me this year for the same race. She didn't congratulate anyone after and left pretty quickly, I don't think she was very happy.
I might have to finish racing, my stomach cramps and runners trots were even worse today and I vomited later on too. Not sure it is worth it, OH certainly doesn't think so! No Wine for me.
15.9 miles including the warm up
514.55

lastqueenofscotland · 12/04/2015 16:38

Anglaise people like that are sore losers!
Don't finish racing! I thought about it and i lose motivation i always try and have one a month, got a 5k and a 10k coming up so i don't stop training.

What gear (tops/leggings etc) are people liking at the moment... I want to buy some tat! Grin

phlebasconsidered · 12/04/2015 17:20

Ohone two, I think i might do the grunty fen HM www.elyrunners.co.uk/gruntyfen/ to get ready for the Great Eastern run, it's a month before so good for me. Plus I'll do the Huntingdon 10K . Anglaise, it was busy!

I left my garmin at home by accident and I think it was good, I just kept on without checking where I was.

Oh one, I am planning to do the Hm with a walk run technique if need be. Jeff Galloway is great with intervals, I find if I am having an asthmatic week it nails it.

5madthings · 12/04/2015 17:40

anglaise yes am joining a running club, have been thinking about it for ages and called and enquired etc, there is one that meets a ten min bike ride from me, so perfect warm up. A friend also wants to so we are joining together :) sorry about your tummy, that sounds awful, do you think it's nerves? I am paranoid about needing the loo whilst running but touch wood have not had it happen yet.

It was really windy for my run, have just seen that at 3pm when I was running the wind was at 55mph, that was the wind speed taken at a road I ran along. So I feel better about my run now, no wonder it was hard.

Have looked up weather for Manchester for next week and it's looking Ok.

Re running gear I saw a link to pop art super hero running gear, looks fab! I shared the link on fb, will see if I can find it. I may treat myself to some after my half marathon.

MorrisZapp · 12/04/2015 17:53

Thrilled to have my tiny 2.2 added to the running total :)

lastqueenofscotland · 12/04/2015 18:13

I think i might have to buy the christmas jumper ones! they are great!

Runrunrun1 · 12/04/2015 18:18

Wow, well done to everyone on their HMs and 10ks, I am in awe! Hello to MZ, I'm also pretty new to this running lark, having been doing no exercise at all! Are you following a program?

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 12/04/2015 18:22

Anglaise I think today's race was capped at 1,200 runners. DS and I only signed up this week, and our numbers were in the 1100's so it was close to, if not, full.

Well done on your HM result, but not on the tummy troubles!

phlebas have had a quick look on the calendar and don't think I can do either of those this year Sad.

MZ every miles counts!

familygermsareok · 12/04/2015 18:24

anglaise congrats on PB and category podium place, that is brilliant Flowers and even better that your nemesis got her comeuppance
Sorry about your continuing GI issues, it would be such a shame to stop racing because of it. There are loads of articles on ways to help on runners forums, I guess you've probably looked at those? Is it that bad after long training runs too or does the intensity of a race make it more severe?

Grin at your change in category helping you to a podium place. One of the few benefits of getting older! I have the opposite problem though, I am currently in 40-49 category but will be moving up to 50-59 after next birthday. There is a local 10k I do every year which most of the good club runners don't enter for some reason and I have managed to get a category place for the last 4 consecutive years! I have a lovely little collection of trophies ( glass cubes with running figures engraved inside, really nice) Smile
However the older category has several very good runners in it who always come before me in this race so this year will be my last chance to try and add to my collection ( until they all move up to 60+ anyway Wink ).

morris every mile counts Smile

runtothehills · 12/04/2015 19:12

Lots been happening this weekend. Welcome to those just joined. Well done on your races WOLF runners, OhOne Phlebas on your 10k, and Anglaise on your PB and podium place. And a big congratulations to cinnamon on you lovely new addition Flowers

Did my hill race yesterday, 9 miles and 700m ascent in mix of heather and rocky paths in 1h40. Results aren't out yet but beat a number of runners who would have been in-front of me last year so was really chuffed. Followed it up with a night out till 3am dancing in the night clubs and even managed a 4 mile recovery run (very slowly) today. Not sure why I now can't get off the sofa Wink

514.55 + MZs 2.2 + 9 + 4 = 529.75

emummy · 12/04/2015 19:49

Welcome new runners, all miles welcome no matter how small.
Well done to all the racers this weekend, what an impressive bunch!
No running today, drove down to Perth with dd2 for her athletics meeting and spent an enjoyable 5hrs freezing my back side off while watching some great races! Dd2 happy, was part of winning relay team, did well in 88m and massively improved her shot putt, having only tried it once before! A great day, really impressed with all the club volunteers and all the work they put in. Might have to join them...

emummy · 12/04/2015 19:50

88m? 800!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 12/04/2015 20:35

Brilliant emummy, well done to your DD. I was never a particularly sporty child, but I do enjoy having sporty children of my own.

runtothehills that sounds AMAZING and super-speedy. Massive well done, and respect for following it up with a big night out and more running Grin

I added MZ's miles on the last page, so I think we are 527.55 Smile

OP posts:
twobambinos · 12/04/2015 21:09

537.85 adding on my 10.3 from today.

Welcome mz all miles welcome.
Congrats runtothehills that's a great run.

Well done on the pb anglaise that's amazing and a podium place what a lovely added bonus.

Congrats everyone else on their runs in sorry I'm on the phone and cant see back.

Runrunrun I think, well done that's great going on the c25k there will always be bad days but hopefully next run will feel easier or more rewarding at least.

Family that was lovely to get the cheers when you needed it most.

Welcome back 5mad. That sounds like alot of running for the week before a hm but maybe someone more experienced could give u better advice.

Well done on the wolf runs everyone.

LaughingM · 12/04/2015 22:01

cinnamon!! What a gorgeous little bundle, many congratulations Flowers.

anglaise very well done for your race but sorry about the stomach problems.

So many races this weekend I don't think I can name check everyone, but huge well done to all! And particularly to the WOLF runners - what a shame the temperature had dropped so much!

I pulled out of my half on friday. Well I'd never actually entered it, but I pulled out in my head! I am feeling both annoyed and relieved... I wish I could do it, but I'm finding training really hard and it's been weeks since I've actually enjoyed running Sad. It's supposed to be my stress reliever not a cause of stress so I'm gonna put this goal off for a while. I've only been running a year and my goal was to do a HM in 2015, so I'm gonna focus on doing a few 10ks this spring/summer then try for HM in the autumn.

LaughingM · 12/04/2015 22:03

Oh and 543.35

AggressiveBunting · 13/04/2015 04:08

10k (6.2 miles) on the treadmill from me to make 549.55

Re strength training, I still think higher rep/lower weight is beneficial (e.g. wall balls with an 8kg ball, or KB swings with a 20kg bell) but what I'm avoiding is low rep/high weight work designed to build muscle as I now have quads that any premier footballer would be proud of and they are an energy suck on longer runs.

Anglaise1 · 13/04/2015 07:01

runforthehills you did a great time in your race with all that ascent, and following it up with a night club, chapeau! I 5 hours after my race in bed/on the loo Envy
LaughingM You did the right thing postponing your HM even if it was only in your head, you will feel much more confident doing one after getting a few 10k races done this summer.
emummy it is lovely to have kids who enjoy sport, congrats to your DD2.
No running today, tummy still a bit dodgy.
