Yes stop walking up those hills Agressive! Try and shuffle, like me!
good luck today family, hope the hm goes well.
actiongirl I used rock tape and taped it myself, followed a video on YouTube! It really did feel surprisingly supportive and felt ok afterwards, until ds kicked it yesterday afternoon. Been a bit more achy since! Hope your knee improves soon.

Whowouldfardelsbear · 12/04/2015 08:28

Urgh I hate hills. I had to walk up a really steep bit this evening. Think I will stick to flat till I get my stamina up a bit. Just back from an 8km run (my furthest distance yet!). It is really windy tonight so i managed a personal best km time of 5 minutes 15 seconds as it blew me along (compared to 7.15 as i ran into the wind and did the 50 metre walk up the hill.

So 8km = 4.97 miles = 442.53

Stoatystoat · 12/04/2015 09:24

I'm a regular 5ker popping in to ask to be pushed out the door. I tripped on Friday, possibly uneven pavement, possibly just lost footing. I was ok, managed to catch myself and only grazed my hands and arm. I was 3k in and got up to finish my run...but feeling abit anxious about this mornings. Think will just go to the park today which will be boring and sneezy compared to my street running but make me go! Please....

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 12/04/2015 09:29

Stoaty welcome to the thread Smile

Now off you go (in the nicest possible way), but come back in half an our and tell us how you got on with your 5K. It's a lovely day for running Grin

I did the WOLF run yesterday - 10K of obstacles, a big hill and the best water slide EVER - with some other MNers. I can't decide whether to put it towards my 1000 mile target for the year (have already not included a parkrun where I tail walked, because that felt like cheating even though they were precious miles). What do people think?

Off to run the Cambourne 10K with DS1. I'll be the one at the back hobbling Grin

Hope you're out running now Stoaty! I did a stumble/trip over a zebra crossing this evening but managed to stop myself falling just. Still waiting for that to happen to me - it is bound to sooner or later.

I think the WOLF can reasonably be added to your target - it is, after all, called a Wold run Good luck for your 10k tomorrow to!

Whowouldfardelsbear · 12/04/2015 09:47

Or today, even

Whowouldfardelsbear · 12/04/2015 09:48

Urgh and sorry for the other typos and grammatical errors. I'm tired and need to go to bed!

Stoatystoat · 12/04/2015 11:08

Thanks for the cheerleading guys! I did my 5k in the park, it was a bit boring but I needed to get my confidence back. To be honest, it's a miracle it hasn't happened sooner! I'm back in the game though now which is good. It was sunny but windy, the wind was horrid but I've missed the imminent rain at least.

I hope everyone else is getting on with their runs or enjoying rest day.

I'm impressed with the 10k runners here! That's so good.

standingonlego · 12/04/2015 11:09

Had lots of fun at WOLF run yesterday with OhOne and feetheart...check this water slide go-pro video out...

Sorry we had to dash off with so little ceremony after :( crockery got the full on shivery shakes so needed to get her home and warmed up !

5madthings · 12/04/2015 11:14

Morning all, well done on all the mile's.

I haven't run properly for a few weeks due to niggly hip and life getting in the way, am now panicking about half marathon next Sunday! Am going to go out later and just see how I get on, hip okish. I had got up to ten and a bit miles and that felt fine, my legs and breathing etc felt fine didn't feel tired. So if I run today and tomorrow, then wed and an easy 5km on Fri I will be fine for the half on Sunday yes? Will try and do five miles today, a short run tomorrow and 5-6 on wed before short run Fri. That should be Ok yes? Aiming on under two and a half hours for Sunday. So no fast.

5madthings · 12/04/2015 11:17

Oh and I have agreed to join a running club with a friend after the half so am motivated to continue, plus can work on my pace want to get my ten km down from 63/64mins to under an hour. I just don't push myself running on my own so club is way to go. Am hoping on half marathon the crowds etc will help.

Deliaskis · 12/04/2015 12:08

5.16 for me today, starting to push the distance a bit (for me!), the running bit was fine but did have heartburn halfway round which was unpleasant. But feel confidence about running a bit further now. Was very windy and took me ages though!

AggressiveBunting · 12/04/2015 12:36

Urgh I hate hills Yeah me too and in trail running it's not always the best strategy to run them because doing so can use a disproportionate amount of energy relative to the additional speed. That said, I do catch myself taking the piss sometimes, and walking up 20 steps or a hill I can see the top of.

Due to holidays etc I haven't been doing strength training for a few weeks and I must say it's made a big (positive) difference to how I feel - legs feel much lighter and it's easier to get faster leg turn. I ran a few hills today that I normally walk and they really weren't that bad. On that basis I've decided to drop my heavy lower body session for a month and trade it for a more circuity class and see how that goes.

ohone the wolf run totally counts!!!

Runrunrun1 · 12/04/2015 12:50

2.76 for me today, so 450.45. Was week 8 run 1 of c25k, which I have loved so far, but today's run was horrible. Don't know why, but felt like I was running through treacle right from the start. Nearly fell over a dog near the end, and almost wanted to as an excuse to stop!! Please tell me that this doesn't mean that all my runs will be horrible from now on?

Anyway, more importantly, congratulations cinnamon. He is absolutely gorgeous!

phlebasconsidered · 12/04/2015 13:19

Just finished the Cambourne 10K in a PB of 1hr 04, so i'm pleased. Bit windy and far hillier than I thought it would be! It was very well organised and very friendly, recommended for next year. I'm on the wine now...
How did you find it OhOne?

And WELL DONE Cinnamon, he is beautiful. That baby head smell. X

450.45 = 6.2
456.47

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 12/04/2015 13:31

phlebas we must have finished about the same time (were you the lady in the purple top who sprint finished in front of me?). I couldn't see the finish - I was looking for the archway that was there earlier - so hadn't started to sprint until I saw the mats about 10 metres away Smile

I really enjoyed it, apart from the wind. A poor lady went full length just in front of me at about 6K so a couple of us stopped to try to help her up but she didn't want to move. One of the other women was a first aider so I left them and went to get a marshal. I hope she is OK.

DS1 did it in 50 mins, which he was pretty pleased with after a 23 minute parkrun yesterday and a 2 hour HM earlier in the week. Oh to be young and fit Envy

Thanks suzanne going to take a look later. I was in a bit of pain doing my kettlebells deadlift pulls this morning, so am staying clear of proper deadlifts as I know I struggle to keep my right foot still doing them, which is possibly related to My knee I suppose.

Welcome stoaty! Good work on getting out.

Agressive I'm interested that your weights session have had a negative impact on running - I would have thought stronger legs gets You up the hills more efficientlyWink

Good work everyone on the 10ks and wolf runs! I put in a mile warming up my dodgy knees at the gym this morning, physio again tomorrow and I am crying out for some taping up as my leg even hurts when I'm on the sofa or lying in bed. Just moving it in my sleep and it hurts.

Off into the sunshine to do a bit of gardening now and avoid the copious housework!

lastqueenofscotland · 12/04/2015 14:50

Can I join in? marathon runner, who has been for first run since december this weekend due to niggling injuries/being lazy. oops.

Got my first 5k this year next month, 10k after, then hopefully sticking to halves and full marathons from there on in. :)

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 12/04/2015 14:50

Thank you all for letting me count the WOLF run Smile.

lego we were so cold and shivery that it took forever for us to get out of the wet muddy stuff and changed into dry clothes - feet and I were hoping that you had been faster than we had and had given up waiting for us Smile. Let me know when you fancy a Bedford parkrun and some cake

family hope your HM went/is going well Smile

5mad you will be fine. Don't overdo it this week, and run/walk the HM if you need to (I have been beaten by run/walkers more than once Hmm)

Agressive well done on your hills. It's good to mix up the training I think.

Runrunrun we all sometimes have bad runs (for me they are often the ones I think will be easy), but for every bad one there is a good one waiting Smile

action sorry to hear the knee is still sore Sad

Well done Delia (but sorry to hear about the heartburn - had you eaten just before you went out?) and Stoaty

Right, here goes:

442.53 + my WOLF and lego's WOLFs 12.4 + Stoaty's 3.1 + Delia's 5.16 + runrunrun's 2.76 + my and phebas's 12.4 + actiongirl's 1 = 479.35

I bet this post has taken so long that someone else will have posted more miles while I have been writing Grin

Hello lastqueen and welcome Smile

MorrisZapp · 12/04/2015 15:43

Hello! MZ here. Totally new to running. I'm reasonably fit (do body attack etc) but have never run in my life and am not naturally athletic.

Anyway got a mad idea I'd like to run the Chicago marathon :)

In advance of this somewhat unrealistic goal, I've booked a half marathon in September. Yikes.

So I did my very first run today. It was a run\ walk really. I did 2.2 miles, feel really chuffed about that. No shin splints! Plan now is to run every other day to increase speed and distance.

I read 'Running Like a Girl' by Alexandra Heminsley, it's brilliant.

suzannecanthecan · 12/04/2015 15:46

re heavy leg training and running.
Strength training makes your muscles adapt to produce high forces in short bursts, endurance training teaches them to produce much lower force but for a very long period.
I think the more you specialise or focus on one the more your ability to do the other is compromised.

Also with distance running the limiting factor is more likely to be the ability of your CV system to deliver oxygen to the working muscles and the strategies used to make sure you have enough fuel for the muscles to burn over an extended period of time

Well, thats my understanding anyway.

familygermsareok · 12/04/2015 15:48

Wow, the WOLF run looks fantastic fun, that water slide is brilliant! It does look a little on the chilly side too though Grin. Well done to all the WOLF runners, and of course it counts as a run Smile
Well done on the 10ks too OhOne and phlebas. Your DS sounds pretty amazing Ohone

Welcome lastqueen and stoaty, glad you got out for a run.

Sorry your run felt awful runrunrun , it happens, but there will be loads of good ones just waiting out there for you Smile

Also interesting re your legs feeling better with less strength work aggressive. I also would have assumed it would have helped with hills. I don't do any kind of weights/gym work, although I do a few sit ups and push ups every morning in the bedroom.

5madthings hope your hip has settled now. Don't overdo it this week. I have known people who have got better times doing a walk/run but it has been a planned time for each walk/run section rather than defaulting to walking when you are too exhausted to run any more. They said it was hard to make themselves walk in the early sections as they felt well able to run and well meaning people were encouraging them to run but it paid off as they were strong in the running sections right up to the end.

phlebasconsidered · 12/04/2015 15:50

I was wearing a yellow shirt with "chicks" on, they are my HM charity in October. They provide respite care for child carers and take them on holiday.
They are a superb charity and my only reason for attempting a HM.
www.chicks.org.uk/index.php?gclid=CPTU6JKB8cQCFW7KtAodBQQA-g
They helped a child who was in my class a few years ago and turned their life around. It meant that the marshalls shouted at me "go chick!" which I liked!

There was a lady in purple who was either alongside / behind / in front of me the whole way, but i believe I was in front of her at the end. But I may not have been, I was in that "OMG, ARE WE DONE YET" haze. At which point I stuffed all my lost calories and had a mega bacon and egg bap before driving home, and now i'm on the wine!

And OneTwo: your son is mega!

Welcome to everyone new. I am befuddled and amazed at myself and everyone. I only started running at the end of December. It's such a lovely community.

5madthings · 12/04/2015 15:58

I just did four miles and Omg it was awful, physically fine but mentally every bit was a fight, I so wanted to stop after two kmS. My pace was Ok, Averaged 6:15 per km. Hip Ok, I could feel it but it wasn't painful. Anyway I have got out and run which I think was the biggest hurdle as I have literally been feeling sick that I wouldn't be able to run. But I could, even if I felt like I couldn't get into a good rhythm. It was hot and windy as well, I should have taken a drink or at least had a drink before I went out. I will do an easy 5km tomorrow, aim for five miles on wed and then easy 5km on Fri. And yes will walk run if I have to. I could do say 5km, walk a bit then 5km and walk a bit, basically breaking it up into four sections Ish.
