Just saw the old thread was nearly full and didn't want us to run out Grin

381.03 4.1 from me tonight, my last run before Sundays 10k. I am quite nervous now, only ever done park runs before. I keep obsessively looking at the times from last year and panicking.

AggressiveBunting · 10/04/2015 03:48

Adding 4 on the treadmill from me this morning to make 385.03. Hoping to get out for a longer run tomorrow but have 2 new kids' beds arriving so might be humping furniture around instead. However, I'm so excited about the prospect of getting all the toys out of the sitting room (beds are raised with massive toy cupboards underneath) that I'm happy to sacrifice this once Grin.

Good luck to those racing this weekend. Hope you all hit your targets. I've got a 17k mixed trail and road race next Sunday- just found out it's a 7am start- gah!

Also, any advice from those with more experience on mixed medium?- is is better to wear road shoes or trail shoes? The trail is not massively technical afaik and shouldnt be muddy so I'm erring towards road shoes.

Suzanne possibly your pelvic floor benefited from you having your DC relatively young. I think it tends to be more of an issue for older mothers (although not always). They also say that weight training helps. Also, how are you getting on with your Hoka's?

Anglaise1 · 10/04/2015 07:48

Aggressive I'd wear road shoes if it isn't technical or very muddy. My road shoes are fine for all the footpaths and tracks around here, and more comfortable than trail shoes.
Phlebas you'll be fine for your 10k, don't worry, try not to stress (although a little it good) and make sure you don't do/eat anything differently before your 10k race! It will be over before you know it.
Runforthehills good luck with your race.
A girl from my club is doing the Liffré HM this year, as last year. I generally run better times than her but she loves the competition and last year overtook me 50m before the end of the race, something you don't usually do with fellow club runners. She is extremely competitive she loves beating me in particular. All the other girls in the club are lovely and don't have that competitive streak, but then this person is equally pushy with her kids so I'm not really surprised. They are all super advanced for their ages (according to her) and master every activity they try. To me and other mothers they are precocious and bad mannered.

suzannecallmestan · 10/04/2015 08:17

I had children in my early 20s and had wondered if that makes you less prone to pf problems AggressiveBunting.
Third run with Hokas and they are now comfortable, pita has improved since I started using them :)
I also bought the altra paradigm (zero drop and similar level of cushion) but haven't had chance to run in them yet ?

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 10/04/2015 08:38

5.6 miles to add from yesterday evening. Weather was beautiful.
My shin hurts again now though. I think it might be my trainers. They are nearly a year old so it might be time to invest in some new ones.

Whowouldfardelsbear · 10/04/2015 09:39

I had my DDs in my 30s and I tend to avoid jumping or laughing too much . . .

4.68 mile run from me tonight. I changed my route slightly to include a bit of uphill which slowed me down significantly though I didn't notice it so much at the time.

suzanne how are you finding the Hokas? Do you recommend them?

Anglaise interesting to hear about running club etiquette. That never would have occurred to me. I may have to read up on some of this stuff before I join one!

395.31 including Cardiff's 5.6 and my 4.68.

suzannecallmestan · 10/04/2015 09:46

?
Whowould, yes I like the hokas:)
(but am leaning towards the altras for the wider toe box)
I think they are definitely worth considering if you are in the market for a change of running shoe.
Bloomin expensive though, all this experimenting with shoes but once running becomes important it seems as if all other aspects of life are in thrall to it?Blush

suzannecallmestan · 10/04/2015 09:49

it's bad form to beat someone in your running club?
doesnt that hold you back a bit?
(or have I got the wrong end of the stick here? )

AggressiveBunting · 10/04/2015 09:52

Thanks Anglaise. Yes, unless we get a lot of rain between now and next weekend I'll wear road shoes I think. Got some Hoka Cliftons- they are so light. Amazing.

Not sure what I think about overtaking etiquette. In a way I think a competition's a competition and you have to go all out and have no regrets. On the other, I agree with you and I'd probably run it in with the friend I was about to overtake, rather than zoom past, especially if the time isn't critical (like you're on track for a PB if you sprint in). Usually I have a sort of understanding with the people I go to the race with, so sometimes we basically run round together and sometimes it's every dog for themselves.

In all cases, the adage "gracious in defeat, magnanimous in victory" should be liberally applied Grin. Asians are generally quite good at that- in fact sometimes the self-deprecation becomes a little wearing.

"Oh yes, I trail run, but I'm very baaaad"

Then you find out that means they missed the podium once in twenty races.

AggressiveBunting · 10/04/2015 09:54

suzanne I think Anglaise means you shouldnt pip someone on the line, rather than you cant overtake them at, say, mile 11 of 13.

suzannecallmestan · 10/04/2015 10:01

Ah comprendeWink
(I know nothing of the finer points of racing) ?

HalleLouja · 10/04/2015 10:11

5.2 to add though flipping watch didn't get a signal to the end of the run but was with run club and apparently that is how far we went.

400.31

Am tempted by Hokas and might go to the running shop in Victoria as they sell them. But I do like my Brooks. May be worth a try....

suzannecallmestan · 10/04/2015 10:21

I like my brooks too and plan to try them again for some runs when (if?) the pita is resolved

Anglaise1 · 10/04/2015 11:42

Aggressive Suzanne yes, agree a race is a race and we overtake each other, that is part of the fun. It was the pipping on the line so to speak which is a bit unsporting - a bit like rubbing someones nose in it especially as I'd been ahead all the race and wasn't that well at the end. Normally you'd grab the hand of the clubmate you were overtaking and finish moreorless together with just a few metres to go - it was her PB by nearly 10 minutes and she's never come close to doing that without me to beat. A few seconds wouldn't have changed that.
It isn't the same thing at all as during the rest of the race when it is every runner for himself!
Anyway I'll just do my own thing on Sunday. I don't know why she is so proud about beating me, she is 18 years younger than me so should (on paper) be a lot faster.

Whowouldfardelsbear · 10/04/2015 11:48

Ah - I quite like the sound of someone grabbing my hand and crossing the finishing line with me!

HalleLouja · 10/04/2015 11:55

My friend who ran my first HM with me grabbed my friend and we ran over the finish line together. It was actually a really cute moment....

cinnamongreyhound · 10/04/2015 13:41

Hello all! After days of waiting around I kicked up a fuss and we got moved back to our local hospital. Waters broken and baby arrived at 2.46 this morning Grin

No miles to add Grin

Neeko · 10/04/2015 14:09

Aww congratulations Cinnamon Thanks. Enjoy counting those fingers and toes.

twobambinos · 10/04/2015 14:09

Anglaise that sounds nasty. I don't know any thing about race etiquette but she sounds like she has one big chip on her shoulder try not to let her bother you too much.

Best of luck to all racing this weekend.

AggressiveBunting · 10/04/2015 14:36

Yay!! Congrats Cinnamon. Sending sleep vibes your way!!

Anglaise1 · 10/04/2015 15:05

Cinnammon congratulations, I was just thinking about you and wondering if baby had arrived. What a cutie! Flowers

IrianofWay · 10/04/2015 15:11

Woohoo!!! Did a club run last night - it's the beginners and restarters night as I don't have the confidence to go with all the scary multi-marathoners and ultra runners on a tuesday. I did 3.79 miles and I did it in 32.33 minutes!!! I think that was my fastest ever time Grin

Lets see if I can stick to that when I do my 10k next weekend . I'd love to do a sub-60 min time.

IrianofWay · 10/04/2015 15:12

cinnmon - congratulations! What a beauty xxx

IrianofWay · 10/04/2015 15:13

BTW I have done loads of miles since I last posted but been too busy running to post them. Sorry Grin
