Yay melanie great stuff Grin

I think I need 5 more different ones to get myself on there. There's a new one a stone's throw from my parents, so will try to do that one sometime soon.

Hi everyone! I'm new!

I started doing the c25k in January and have been struggling to motivate myself since completing it. So I've registered for parkruns in the hope that it will keep me going. You never know - this could be the first new years resolution that actually sticks!

So, any tips for a first-timer? What can I do to prepare myself for my first parkrun? I can run 5k but still find it tough due to the fact that I only manage to get out about once a week at the moment. How often does everyone else run during the week?

holmessweetholmes · 12/05/2015 14:20

Hi cheapandcheerful! Hope you enjoy your first Parkrun! My advice is don't get carried away and set off too fast! I used to do that and my legs would feel like lead after 5 mins! Start steady and you might find yourself overtaking some people!

I am running 3 times a week atm - am training for my first half marathon in June, so doing a Parkrun, a set of intervals and an increasingly long run each week (14k yesterday - oof!).

Blatherskite · 12/05/2015 18:59

I think for a first parkrun, the most important things to remember are your BARCODE and that it is a run not a race.

It's all about encouraging people to run not the speed they do it at so don't worry about being last or holding people up. There will be marshals there to make sure you don't get lost and a tail runner to make sure no one gets left behind. Just go, be friendly and enjoy it. You'll be part of the community and hopelessly addicted in no time Wink

I've made it onto both the UK and Global most events lists now Blush

cinnamongreyhound · 12/05/2015 20:39

Hi cheapandcheerful! Tips for your first parkrun, take a paper barcode or a plastic one of you think you're going to be going every week Wink, arrive a bit early as we do our new runners briefing around 8.50, don't feel any pressure to meet a certain time and if you take it easy you will get a pb for the next few weeks! Enjoy yourself and if you have time hang around for coffee at the end as the community is as important as the run. I run 3 times a week but some of or parkrunners only run parkrun and still enjoy it.

holmessweetholmes · 14/05/2015 12:31

No Parkrun for me this weekend Sad. Dh is off supervising a DofE weekend so I'm in sole charge of the dc. And, much as ds might like to run, he's only just had his cast taken off his broken leg, so he's not allowed!

ThursdayLast · 15/05/2015 18:21

Oh holmes what a bummer.

Hi cheapandcheerful Grin

I'm so excited to tail run tomorrow. DH is happily occupying DS all morning so I'm going to stay and have a cuppa which I don't usually.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 15/05/2015 22:01

Lovely Thursday, that's my favorite bit of parkrun Grin

That's a shame holmes poor DS and broken leg Shock how did he do that?

Welcome cheap how you enjoy your parkrun Smile. Start at the back and find someone nice to smile at/say hello to; and chat to the person ahead of you and behind you while you are eating to get your barcode scanned. The first couple of times I went everyone seemed to know each other and it was a bit like being the new girl at school not knowing anyone. Now some of my best friends are from parkrun, and DH asks me every week if my friends were there, even though he has only met a couple of them once or twice. And enjoy, and come back with a run report tomorrow morning Smile.

Hello Blathers, haven't seen you for aaaaages!

Hi cinners, are you parkrunning tomorrow?

Hoping to OhOneOhTwoOhThree, as long as little man is fed and happy to stay with daddy! I have two signs which I take home as they're easier for me to put out on my way that the rd to do and I haven't had them since I gave birth. I took them home last week so will need to get up and put them out so I won't be 5 mins like last week! I'm rd the week after Smile. You at home this week?

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 16/05/2015 11:06

Hello - hope you got to parkrun cinnamon. I was at home today - nice sociable run, including two ladies who were on tour at Luton for feet's inaugural a couple of weeks ago and visited us today. I ran there and back as well Smile.

We also had 35 runners from a local club today who were there to celebrate the 80th birthday of one of their coaches Smile.

Hello parkrunners I've been lurking on this thread since I signed up a couple of weeks ago and finally plucked up the courage to go for my first run this morning. Time was 30.05 and position was 352 out of 567. 99th female and 11th in my age category so think it was ok! I can see this is going to be addictive!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 16/05/2015 12:27

Hello and welcome Hopelass Smile That sounds like a big parkrun!

Love it when lurkers join in. Before you know it you will be hopelessly addicted like the rest of us

Hi Hopelass, that does indeed sound like an ENORMOUS parkrun - I was tail runner at ours and I came 150th!

It's was a beautiful bluebell day today - I was an irresponsible tailrunner, I kept losing the tail as I kept stopping to take pictures Grin

Sounds like you had a nice morning OhOne

Hopelass · 16/05/2015 14:19

Thanks for the welcomes OhOne and Thursday. Yes it is pretty massive. I believe there are over 700 people officially signed up there as their home one! I loved it and am already looking forward to next week Smile

cinnamongreyhound · 16/05/2015 14:59

I did OhOneOhTwoOhThree and got a pbpb again, 30:06 Shock was on my own as my two usual running buddies where either too quick for me or with their children and slower than I wanted to go. And we had 95!!!!!!!!! runners today, very exciting. I was 53rd and 16th woman. Ran my 70th today Grin

Welcome Hopelass, almost identical times today Smile

I don't think that's irresponsible ThursdayLast, as long as you don't lose anyone. We have a laugh at one of our RD's as she has always had at least on runner BEHIND her each time she's tail run Confused

EATmum · 16/05/2015 19:43

Hi parkrunners. I completed my 10th park run this morning and finally got a new PB. I did one park run last year when I was training for a half marathon - when I started park running again in Jan it's been a goal for me to beat. And I did today so I'm feeling a tiny bit pleased. And I thought you guys would understand.

I run at Bushy Park so the crowd of runners is enormous. I think there were about 1200 today. It is quite a sight to see.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 16/05/2015 22:46

Well done on your new PB EATmum I'd love to do a Bushy parkrun one of these days.

MelanieCheeks · 17/05/2015 16:11

Forgive the indulgence, but here's my (first!)

Blatherskite · 17/05/2015 16:36

I really want to do Bushy Park. Apparently the twin finish funnel is a sight to see!

We had a course record at MK yesterday, 656! Makes me even more nervous for my next go at RD-ing in a couple of weeks! Almost hoping it's wet and miserable just to keep the numbers down!

A good chunk of our runners were brand new to parkrun having just completed a beginners course with their club and coming over en mass to "graduate". It was really goof to see them all really enjoying it. I hope they come back.

karatekimmi · 17/05/2015 16:45

loved it Mel looks like fun (and a few soggy runs!!) - I always see people do things like this and then think I should do it, but I always forget!!

Well done hopelass I'm sure you'll be hooked soon!

EAT well done on your PB!! It gives you a secret smile when you get a PB!

I think it was a busy week - a lot of attendance records went, Telford had their second highest, I wonder how many runners in total!

Blatherskite · 17/05/2015 17:13

Yes, Keswick got a course record too. All the marathoners up to run the last day of the 10 in 10 today will have helped.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 17/05/2015 17:27

We had a course record too, and we had some famous (in the running world) visitors as well - Liz and Martin Yelling. Martin steamed past me on my second lap pushing a double buggy and finished second Grin.

Love your vid Melanie

OP posts:
cinnamongreyhound · 17/05/2015 21:24

And us but no special visitors Wink

feetheart · 18/05/2015 10:27

Love the video Melanie - has given me a few ideas both for DS and for our parkrun :)

I think we need a MN tourist trip to Bushy parkrun as DS and I have it on our list too.

Well done to everyone running at the w/e, especially those new to parkrun, kimmi speaks the truth, it is addictive :)

I was supposed to be on finish tokens this w/e but was relegated to token support again by DS. Did have to tackle my first unaccompanied under11 and his mum who both managed to lie about his age Shock Quite seasoned parkrunners too so knew what they were doing Shock. I hope I got my point across!

We are cancelled next week due to Luton Carnival set-up but I am on holiday so DS and I are going to run at Fritton Lake where I ran my first ever parkrun this time last year - you know that addictive thing I mentioned earlier - be careful where it leads :o

cinnamongreyhound · 19/05/2015 22:23

Ooooo my running buddy is running at fritton lake on Saturday too feetheart!

My first rd with baby in tow this week, hope it's stress free Wink
