Bloody hell - that 7 min Davina exercise DVD

It works!

I've been at it a week. Before that, did fuck all exercise for YEARS. Ended up with a bad knee every time I tried running etc so gave up.

This was a last ditch attempt to stop my body basically falling off, and I was attracted by the fact it would all be done in seven minutes and at least I could tell myself I'd done something.

It actually frigging works.

(Promise I don't work for Davina. Booble plate, river of sweetcorn, cube of poo, pombears, elderly Korean lady.)

But if there is anyone who was like me, who hates exercise and just generally CBA with gyms etc, this is cracking.

Thanks Stevie I would love a long back. I think I'm similar to Davina in that we're both short waisted, but that's about the only similarity at the moment. My legs are actually quite long but the chunkiness of my thighs hides this.

This is all going to change though! Wink

CadiM · 15/02/2015 12:19

I'm another fan, particularly of the abs sections. I can really feel my lower abs working with the planks even though they are shorter and on the knees compared to the traditional way. And my arms shake more with the push ups compared to the more rapid up-and-down method (like in Shred).

stevienickstophat · 15/02/2015 12:22

Yes, it is, Margot - and you'll notice the difference by this time next week!

I'm all about instant gratification, me. This does offer that.

Whats it like on the knees?

I used to Shred, but it played havoc with my knees, the lunges???

andthenthereweretwo · 15/02/2015 12:23

What kind of music is on the dvd? I only really like music that I know and hate the ones with 'lift music'

stevienickstophat · 15/02/2015 12:27

My knees have been great, and I've got a really ropey right knee. I was worried about that, but the workouts seem to have been designed with safety in mind.

The music is fine! I was worried because I can't stand hard house type shit that you normally get on fitness dvds, but it's very subtle and in the background so you don't notice it much.

Honestly, all these worries are what I was worried about before I bought the DVD! And it's great. It's as if they've tried to make a fitness dvd for people who hate fitness dvds.

Showy, I would love your tips for warming up after exercise. I get to the point where it seems nothing can warm me - it can take hours!

BuzzardBird · 15/02/2015 14:17

I'm going to go for it too. Inspired by this thread, thanks Stevie Thanks

MargotLovedTom · 15/02/2015 14:18

I've just been to buy it Smile.

stevienickstophat · 15/02/2015 14:28

Good luck! Let us know what you think ??

Um I have been contemplating getting this...may contemplate some more now op Grin

AuntieMaggie · 15/02/2015 14:39

ok I really need to tone up and get fitter and I'm currently seeing a physio for ongoing spd following having a baby last year. I use a cross trainer, bike, treadmill and do some strengthening exercise with him once a week but I want something to help work the rest of me as well - do you think I could do this? I'd have to steer clear of jerky movements like star jumps but I can squat

IAmAPaleontologist · 15/02/2015 14:43

Jumping on the bandwagon and have ordered. I love running. Love it. But the absolute crazy life I have at the moment means I manage 3 weeks of running 3 times a week then don't run for another 6 months. I need something short!

MargotLovedTom · 15/02/2015 14:44

I just did the ultimate fat burner - longest 7 minutes of my life Grin. Definitely feels like a proper workout: I'm sweating like a pig!

TendonQueen · 15/02/2015 14:47

What's Ed's Twitter name? Am also going to order dvd as am trying to face up to my need to shape up. I am not at all sporty.

auntpetunia · 15/02/2015 14:55

Ed is EdthePT on Twitter. He's really helpful he sent me a link to slightly different sit up excersises as I can't do traditional sit ups.

mice, I really struggle with being cold after working out. If you're anything like me it's not just a bit chilly, chuck on a jumper and you're fine type cold. It's bone deep, freezing, nothing helps type cold. I have done a lot of research and asked around, plus read dh's (ex-personal trainer) text books and found that it's quite common and more so with women.

I thought for a while that it was just because I was working out hard and it was simply energy depletion and some snacks would sort it out. It's a bit more complex and I won't bore you with the science of it (I bored myself enough) but simply put, it's the result of an elevated metabolic heat production which continues post-workout. So your body goes into all systems go while you work out and you start to shed heat (sweating, red, increased breathing) but this doesn't slow down when you stop working out, is exacerbated by a few factors (including the effects of HIIT) and you end up losing too much heat and in that wear every layer you have, plus a bobble hat, cuddle the radiator and shiver type arena. For hours.

A few things which really help:

Hydration. So much more helpful than food it turns out. Make sure you are hydrated before you work out. Drink while working out and drink afterwards. Aim to not let your body get dehydrated.

Deal with sweat. If you sweat while working out, it will cool on your skin as you do and it makes things worse. Wear proper workout stuff which wicks the sweat away from your skin. Wipe off with a towel while working out if you're really sweaty and post workout, dry off. Take off any sweaty clothes immediately. Put on something dry. Do this before you do a cool down/stretch if you're planning one.

Don't shower/bath straight away. If you do, your body will continue to shed heat post shower/bath (it will think you're still working out and need cooling) and you still get cold. As you start to cool down, put on another layer and keep moving around a bit. Tidy up, put away weights, wait until you are not breathing fast, sweating or feeling hot. Once you feel a more normal temperature or very slightly cool, THEN shower and dress warmly afterwards, preferably with a tighter layer close to your skin.

Do make sure you eat afterwards. Not immediately post-workout but probably after your shower.

I do get it wrong sometimes, get distracted or sit around in my workout clothes for too long and end up freezing. If you do get really cold, have another warm shower and put on several thinner layers and/or move around enough to get your body warming you up instead of cooling you down. My body just keeps cooling me down regardless of what I tell it, so I have to counteract its inefficient buggering about with my temperature with some trickery.

stevienickstophat · 15/02/2015 14:58

Woo hoo, Margot!

OP posts:
Showy · 15/02/2015 15:01

AuntieMaggie, you absolutely CAN do this and you might find it helps. Get the go ahead first if you're still affected by the SPD. You might find that it helps actually. It's good for your lower pelvis in ways that a lot of exercise isn't.

Margot, well done! I've just finished and did the Ultimate Fat Burner as a book end to my workout. First time was fine. Second time I was really puffed. The other workouts in the middle are to blame really! I like the Ultimate Fat Burner. If you want to make it harder, jump your legs out instead of stepping out on the plank bit.

financialwizard · 15/02/2015 15:02

Might give it a go. I have started running because I am doing a Race4Life 5k thing in July but I need a bingo wing reduction and tone to my thighs (other than the wobble when I run look).

Husband thing says I have lost a lot though (not weighing myself - too scared) so I must have lost some.

Being strict with what I eat though.

Showy · 15/02/2015 15:04

BTW, you should mostly ignore me on here. My tips are all gleaned from years of working out (and be married to dh who was a fitness instructor/ PT for years) and finding out what works for me. I have NO qualifications and no knowledge of anything other than David Mitchell and gingerbread.

Showy · 15/02/2015 15:07

financialwizard, which Race4Life are you doing? I'm doing a Pretty Muddy with my SIL. God knows why. I don't really like pink or mud which is what it seems to be.

Don't worry about scales too much. So many more ways of assessing how you're doing. How you feel, fitness, how your clothes fit, energy levels, inch loss, happiness, motivation, skin, hair etc. Scales are bastards.

Keep it up, you're doing brilliantly.

Meant to say, a really good way of seeing how you're doing is to make sure you do the Fitness Challenge on the DVD once a week or so. That's what it's there for, to show you how much you're progressing.

Timetoask · 15/02/2015 15:12

You can get 7min work out apps for free, Dh has been using one for the last year

MollyMaDurga · 15/02/2015 15:13

You've inspired me, I just got an app from the play store and will give it a go. I've started jumping rope but that's not enough. Scary! I need to lose about a stone, not overweight but out of shape.

Unidentifieditem · 15/02/2015 15:21

Ok I've done the whole DVD (downloaded earlier). It's not very good is it? I mean the ultimate fat burner gets your heart pumping but the rest are a bit lacklustre. Much prefer Jillian Michaels workouts. Yes Davina has great abs but it won't be from 7min workouts...
